Great to see you back pitchside, hopefully "bump" into you one day as I've recently started covering EPL and EFL Championship. I don't think many appreciate the "step-up" from just shooting football to sending in live action shots, its a lot to juggle as Im finding out. Your videos and tutorials have helped me no end - Thanks and keep it up, we need you 🙂
Really kind words there, thank you. Glad the video has helped up in someway. It certainly can get hectic editing and trying to keep up with the action on a busy game for sure! Hopefully catch up Pychard soon then and good luck with the last few weeks of the season.👍🏻
Mark great video once again! I see what you meant on shooting location. There are pros and cons for it. My next try there. Great idea to get spectator shots. Please more videos like this. Very informative!!! Cheers!
Good to come across your channel again Mark and pleasantly surprised to find you back in the sports photography grove. Well done on surviving the transition of the past few years. Slainte!
Love This video!! I’m currently looking for a telephoto lens and can’t afford a 400mm 2.8. I already have a 70-200 2.8, do you think a 180-600mm 5-6.3 would do a good job for football photography?
Hi Frances. I would say if you can, save up for an old mk1 non IS version 400. You really need the depth that the 400 2.8 achieves for sport. You might also find that when at 5-600mm you’ll be at f6.3 and that will dictate high ISO’s resulting in noisy grainy images!
@@MarkKerton thank you for answer! I use Nikon Z6, and what if I look at a 400mm f/4? It’s far cheaper than the 2.8 lens and still quite light right? Or is there a big difference? I live in south Spain and usually shooting football in sunny days luckily
Hi Mark! Did you ever try using your "old" EF 400mm with your R3? I own the old EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM, and am thinking about pairing it with a R3, since my R6 has rolling shutter.
Love the ‘in the moment’ commentary! Really adds to video. Nice weather - bright but overcast. Did you use auto iso, or were you able to keep that constant? Thanks!
Good example of how intensive it is during a game taking pictures. Its flat out essentially for 90+ minutes. Be interesting to have your blood pressure and heart rate monitored during a game, I suspect it would be interesting. 🥵
Thanks, appreciate that. Usually send between 30 to 50 images pitch side and then obviously run a second edit where I might send another 60 later on in the evening.👍🏻
Hi Mark. Another great video. Im thinking of having a go at sports photography at my local non-league club. Had to give up low level aviation photography due to breaking my leg in the Mach Loop. I'm a Nikon shooter but I have a D500 (crop sensor) and a D810 (full frame). I don't have a 400mm f/2.8 but I do have a 300mm f/2.8. Is it worth putting that on my D500 for the 1.5x reach and have the 70-200mm f/2.8 on my D810? Many thanks for any help. Please keep all the vids coming, especially the sports and aviation.
Good spot. I opted for the 1DX on the 70-200 simply for the faster shutter rate. Fortunately, I now have a second 1DX so that will be going on the 400 for the next game and the 5D4 will be by my feet on the wide angle. Thanks for watching👍🏻
Nice video as always, I use to shoot speedway at Belle Vue in Manchester just love the buzz of the excitement from the crowd. Love to try out football photography. Keep up the good work Mark.
Hi Dave. The agency that we represent applies for the games and our season accreditation. It’s a case of securing a position with an agency, usually commission based (earn a % of what you sell) and go from there. All agencies will ask to see your portfolio and website too. Hope that helps👍🏻
Great video yet again and brilliant insight in what it takes to take great images at a football match. I work with a chairman of a football club and he keeps asking me do the photos for them but playing on Saturdays it clashes with my motorsport work. I really must take a week off from it and do some work for him.
Thanks Tom. You’ve got it mate, shooting at f5 I feel just gives me a little extra depth in case I am not accurate with the focus point during those goalmouth scramble!
It really does depend on the game Tony. I’ve had a lot of 0-0 games with very little return - £1-5 on a handful of uses. A big story might return £50-100 on a real good day with multiple uses. It’s for the love of it on commission really and of course building a strong portfolio👍🏻
Hi Mark, I stumbled across your channel whilst searching for sports photography. I like the way you give your suggestions on improving the average joe's snaps in the sense its not like I'm the expert do as I say but rather like having a pint with a mate saying this is what I would try next time. I will definitely be putting your tips to good use on Sunday at my young blokes football. Cheers
Was excited to see you back on the pitch, Mark! I don't remember you saying before, but what's your process for culling photos and getting them from the camera to the laptop in real-time while you're on the sidelines? Seems like a lot to juggle! Are you just quickly card-swapping and happen to cut that out of the video? The images look great, by the way! I'm especially impressed by the color grading. Very nice!
Thanks for watching, really appreciate your support. I rate the images I want to work on, using the star rating system on the cam body. These rated images will then appear at the top of my photo mechanic set. The unrated images will gather up at the base of the set in Photo mechanic. When downloading, it’s a simple process of one in one out and I always have a spare card ready to go back in the camera so I don’t miss any action. I will be making a video on my pitch side workflow soon, watch this space👍🏻
Hi. I quite often joined a colleague for the big games which I suppose appeal to clients more. I think it is just a case of supply and demand really on the whole the more action you catch, the more sales will be made I guess👍🏻
Absolutely brilliant Photographer you are some hard worker thanks for sharing your photography knowledge
Very kind words, thanks for watching👍🏻
Very nice Mark, great to watch.
Thanks Darren, appreciate you watching the video👍🏻
I enjoy every single of your videos! Danke schön and greetings from germany!
Ah thanks so much. Really appreciate your support👍🏻👍🏻

I had to pause the video OMG the LUtton celebrations are amazing especially the face reaction with his team in the background love it
Ha, yes, his look as he turns to the opposing fans is a bit cheeky!
Thanks for watching👍🏻
Great work Mark, glad it stayed dry for once
Thanks Chris. At last, a dry game with a couple of goals for an added bonus.👍🏻
Another great vlog. Great tip about taking photos of the ref.
Thanks for watching Bruce. Pleased you could take something from the video.👍🏻

Great to see you back at sports grounds from football to Rugby. Another KERTON Kracker
Much appreciated Al👍🏻
good stuff. I don't shoot sports but love watching these 🙏
Thanks for watching. Great to hear that you enjoy the videos even though you don’t shoot sport means a lot that does.👍🏻
Great video Mark, i just love watching you talking and telling us why you shoot which scene . . .

I appreciate you making this videos, Mark. Dumping a wealth of knowledge. Can't thank you enough, but I did subscribe!
Thanks for watching, appreciate your support and glad the video is of some help👍🏻

I didn’t no BUT do know plenty of guys that are using that set up and everything is fine👍🏻 I still use my old EF 70-200 on the R3 and it’s great
Hi Mark. You did a terrific job covering the game - some really good photos and alot of education for me. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Paul. Glad you got something out of the video.👍🏻
Great video. As said before I use Nikon gear but enjoy your content very much. Can’t wait for more.
Thanks for watching Tommy, appreciate that. Appreciate you are a Nikon user so thank you for putting up with all the Canon info on my channel.👍🏻
Excellent Video!!
Thanks for watching👍🏻
would love another critique session
One coming soon👍🏻
Love the ‘in the moment’ commentary! Really adds to video. Nice weather - bright but overcast. Did you use auto iso, or were you able to keep that constant? Thanks!
Excellent idea for a video - explaining your thoughts as you go. Nice Shots 👍

Thanks for watching Dave. A heart rate monitor, that would be a good idea. I’ll have to try it sometime👍🏻
Love it!
Nice work Mark!
Great to see you back pitchside Mark. I’ve learnt such a lot from your videos; thank you 👌
How many images do you send live during the match Mark? Nice video, very educational from the fans perspective 😀. Great set of images too
Thanks, appreciate that. Usually send between 30 to 50 images pitch side and then obviously run a second edit where I might send another 60 later on in the evening.👍🏻

I saw you compensate exposure on many of your images. Could you please elaborate on how (and why) you do this? What light metering mode are you using?
Great point, I will chat briefly about this in the next video then. Thanks for watching👍🏻
We’re you using the 5D over the 1Dx? Do you like it’s AF better?

Hi mark,
Do you know where I could find a replace meant lens hood for the canon 400mm f2.8 IS USM mark I lens?
Hi there. Best place to find a good would be eBay I would say. You could also try fixation in London, they might have one or know where one might be👍🏻
Hi Mark have left a comment on several videos please can you
Tell me how do you get a press pass for games? Kind regards Dave Ewers .

Great photos Mark! Why do you choose to shoot at 5.0, and not 2.8 with the 70-200? Is it to be safe to get the group around the subject in focus?
Thanks Tom. You’ve got it mate, shooting at f5 I feel just gives me a little extra depth in case I am not accurate with the focus point during those goalmouth scramble!
But what about noise?
Whats the range of possible earnigs when you are on spec like that? cheers!

U still use Go Pro for vidéo capture? Thx for all
Never actually used a GoPro! I always use my M50 vlogging camera, or my iPhone.👍🏻

Is it viable (financially) for photographers to work in pairs or threes?
Hi. I quite often joined a colleague for the big games which I suppose appeal to clients more. I think it is just a case of supply and demand really on the whole the more action you catch, the more sales will be made I guess👍🏻
Do you manually adjust exposure? How could you do it so fast?
That’s right yes. I shoot in auto iso which allows me to adjust the exposure on the top scroll wheel whilst pressing the set button👍🏻
I always wondering how about the storage management?
Do you use single point focus?
Certainly do. Just find it nice a straight forward to use looking through the viewfinder👍🏻
how did you get noticed by Huw Evans?
Not really sure tbf?! Just received an email one day. Spotted on social for a guess when I shot for PA perhaps.
What's your focus mode in these situations?
what lenses did you use for this game?
Hi there. Mainly the 70-20 f2.8 & 400 f2.8. A little bit of wide angle stuff with the 16-35 f4👍🏻
Have you tried the R3 yet
Very soon Al, I’ll have one in my hands for an hour or two, all being well👍🏻
@@MarkKerton great to compare and contrast with your current camera set up. With sports environments will be a good test
I don't think i could ever juggle with two sets of cameras during fast action 🙂
