  • Watch me track athletes, make mistakes, and get photos.
    This is the raw footage of me photographing a high school volleyball game. You can see my indoor sports photography settings, how I move the camera around, my focus point, when I'm focusing and shooting, and how I see anticipate the action.
    Would love to hear any feedback!

    Hoping this helps show people how I shoot sports. Let me know if you enjoyed it and I'll post other sports as well!

    Love this view. As a rookie it’s nice to see potential settings. I also try to target my focus point on the body vs the face

    Cool way to show it, Paul. I see you are using 1/1000, 2.8, ISO 6400, what camera and lens are you using? I'm usually using 1/800, 2.8 ISO 4000 (Tamron 70-180 2.8) in the poorly lit high school gyms and use a Sony 85mm f1.8 as well for added light, especially when shooting from courtside. Are you shooting RAW or JPEG? Thanks!

      Found your "How to Photograph Volleyball - Focusing, Locations, Indoor Light, Settings, Gear" video, which answered all my questions. Nice that you get to shoot in that well lit gym

    Did you shoot everything handheld?

      Hello! Outdoors I have a monopod for my 400mm, but everything else is handheld.

    do you always use center focus? I recently started shooting beachvolleyball and im having a few obstacles;
    1, wide shots are fine, easy. but close up shots of emotions or in action, especially where you look the players in the face, are so hard to even reach.
    2, the ball is often morphed due to its speed
    3; I often dont get the right person in focus. I have my f/ as high as I can to make sure most is able to be sharp. I tried just solely center focus but often the person wasn't perfectly in the middle, I tried using the joystick to use the focus square but the game is too fast to keep up with that. now I have center focus again but I also turned on face and eye detection, however I often look the players in the back, and if I get their face its usually blocked by the net and so it doesn't detect the face or eye. and I also use the thing where I can stick the focus on to the subject and it track the subject but getting it off and on takes too much time for how fast the game moves.
    Im just having a damn hard time getting the right pictures with the right people in focus

      Volleyball can be really tough in that respect. I always use a single point, but depending on my location and what I'm shooting I will move it around. You should check out my other volleyball video. I give a lot more info on why Im doing what Im doing. Also take a look at my how to get sharp images video. Might be helpful!

    Clearly you're in a decently lit high school gym being able to be at ISO 6400. Though Lightroom is our friend. Way to commit to 1/1000.

      It's a decent gym, luckily not a cave. I've been in plenty of caves.

      I'm typically at 10000 or 8000 if I'm lucky. High School gyms area nightmare.
