    The rental process seems less involved here than we’ve experienced in other places (i.e. Mexico). Realtors ask for first months rent, 1 or 2 month deposit, and that’s pretty much it. No guarantor, no background checks, and most times, no residency needed. We’ve seen leases for 6-12 months and many owners are flexible and open to negotiation. With that in mind, we’ve got some decisions to make.

    When I hunt for an apartment, I look for safety, walk ability, it's closeness to cultural activities, restaurants and hospitals. Last but not least, transportation within the area to include it's distance from an airport. My favorite apartment was the two bedroom for 550.00 a month

    I live in the area near Parque Iberia in the Don Boscoe neighborhood which you highlighted. I love my condo but the noise in the area is sometimes unbearable. From kids screaming, motorcycles, car alarms and barking dogs. My next home with more than likely be in the Challuabamba neighborhood. It looks a lot quieter. I have been in Cuenca for almost six months and I have found that everyone has a dog which is used as a pseudo home alarm system and that most cars have alarms on them which seem to go off at all hours of the day. All construction in Cuenca is done with brick and single pane windows and no insulation or drywall. This lets all of the outside noise in and is something to think about when renting a place. Nice video.😊

      @TheYarbros  Год назад +1

      Thanks, we appreciate the insight. We're both from big cities and noise pollution doesn't bother either of us that much so we don't take it into account. Thank you for letting ppl know.

    Oh my goodness. I just discovered your channel today. Every minute of your videos I watch, I’m falling more in love with Cuenca, but you too. I’ve been encouraging my wife to strongly consider Cuenca as a destination in which we could retire in 10 years from now. Your channel style, editing, and flow is superb. If I could do what you do, I don’t think I’d want to wait 10 years. Thank you so much for sharing your journeys and offering your honest takes on everything you experience. You’re wonderful and I love watching. ❤️

    Loved your video and the great chemistry that you two share. Personally, I have fallen in love with the historic district. Love the safety, architecture and all the shops, banks, phone company, bread store, mercado...all within 5 minute walk. And most surprising is the total silence from 8 PM to 8 AM. Of course there is noise during the day. But with double pane windows, we hardly hear anything. I love and respect the hard working people of Ecuador. They help me daily.

    It can get quite cold in Cuenca since it's so high up (like Quito and like Bogotá). Maybe you would prefer a city at a lower elevation which really has that eternal spring climate without a bit of winter mixed in.

    I live right around the corner from the "Barrio Batan" spot you checked out. This neighborhood is great! Not a lot of expats seem to live around here, it's super safe, quiet, and the people that live here are really friendly.
    Any of the places you pick can be negotiated. Start with negotiating first, and use a realtor to help with that. I knocked $100 a month off of my monthly rent by negotiating, and in the end paying 3 months in advance.
    Whichever place you choose, I'm sure you'll love it. If you choose Barrio Batan, then welcome to the neighborhood! I hope to see you both around 😃.

    I grew up there. When I was little, my family was maybe one out of tops 5 American families living in Cuenca (I am 48); now it’s an expat hub. I wouldn’t rush to move there if I was you. Looks can be deceptive. Cuenca people say it themselves “how beautiful is Cuenca but only if it had no Cuencanos!”. There are lots of things you may not like once the honeymoon stage is over (excitement of new place). You may not like how rainy it can get, how cold it can get (since it has that wet cold, gets to the bones). You may not like the isolation (it’s in an Andean valley with only a few ways in an out of it; sometimes you simply can’t get out!. Strikes, landslides, river changes course, etc.). Maybe as an expat you won’t notice it much but also it’s a big gossip town & extremely closed minded. People are nosy as hell!. Those are just a few serious cons, there are tons more I could mention but maybe it’s just me because I grew up there & couldn’t wait to be an adult and leave and I would not live there again even if someone paid me!. I’d choose Mexico instead. People are more open minded and more adjusted to foreigners plus US proximity.

    Hey Yarbros, this is Solon Coelman, I met ya'll in the Flower Market a couple of weeks ago. Ya'll have terrific information that I'm going to utilize as I'm beginning my search for an apartment which I'll rent for one year. I'm thinking I want a more modern newer apartment for the availability of modern electrical wiring and for appliances and charging my electric tricycle. Thanks for sharing your research!

    Mu goodness, that Challulabamba (sp?) neighborhood was insane. I love houses like that. One probably needs a car from that location, though.
    Those are some really nice apartments. One of the things we constantly hear (which effectively applies across Latin America) are concerns with noise 24/7. We have had severe party fatigue in Mexico from amateur nighclubs and house parties. Something to always be aware of.
    If I could score a place like that $699 apartment for $550, I'd be down.

    So, the neighborhoods are all really nice. The 3rd place is too small, the 2nd place is really nice (depending on the negotiable price), and the 1st one was also nice but lacked space. The slanted window in the kitchen would probably be a problem for Rondel and maybe even Apryl, not much living room area. Barrio Batan would be my choice.

    Hi there, we just stumbled upon your channel, and are happy to see you're covering Ecuador. It appears several of your videos offer Spanish subtitles, and this is excellent. We're a multilingual family, and typically gather around for viewing on a big screen via a Roku. When watching RUclips, if a channel doesn't set this up in advance, we're not able to "auto translate" as one can on a p/c.
    Would you please consider toggling the configurations to allow this for this video. If you'd do the same for other videos where you're spending time in Spanish speaking countries, we'll watch your full videos, and offer likes. (Like #991) for this video.
