Kaviya thalaivan was an amazing movie, I feel sad that Tamil Audience didn’t appreciate the movie. I have watched it atleast 5-6 times

I am born and raised in the UK. I dislike most of the mass masala commercial hero films especially like the typical Vijay movies. But i REALLY LOVED and was obsessed with Kaaviya Thalaivan, deserved more praise. Actually it i a film that western audience deserve to see in film festivals etc. Do consider a re-releasse marketed at this western market

There are no movies which are rejected by public if they are perfect - whether it is Ayirathil Oruvan or iruvar or kaviyathalaivan or Guna or anbesivam or whatever, they genuinely missed some factor which connects to those audience at that particular time.

This interview made me to watch Kaviya thalaivan. Again it is a fantastic film. Only debatable point is the climax of the film. More than the failure of the film, sad part is director like Vasanthabalan almost regretting of making that film due to financial loss the film has to undergo. I think he is very few still left out to make good movies irrespective of the commercial trend around.
Mr.Vasathabalan should keep his head high of making a classic, think about Anbe Sivam, the same commercial failure but still ppl think about that movie not about Atlee's trash. Kaviya thalaivan is a very good movie and continue making good movies.
see VTV is also a kind of love tragedy movie but the end twist saved the movie....like that superb movie ah irunthalum some twist should be there....like even in sethu ! in the end he actually recovers but on seeing the heroine die he goes back to asylum

One of my most favorite films, Kaaviya Thalaivan! ❤
when the movie was already going a bit slow in the middle .....and then suddenly comes vedhika with a dream song ! I loved the song totally ! but placement really made me said okay thats enough... ! many things were half written in the movie like what happens to vedhika in middle and what happens to sidharth after nasar left, prithviraj tries his life out to save the movie but the end feels like OKAY....just not wow.....im amazed by most acting and would bet that awards will come for it but i wouldnt watch it again for the rest of my life !!
if the movie was hit.. we would not have bothered about any drawbacks on narration and script- its better take it on the chin and move on 😌

Second half could have been better bro
The main issue with the film is the lack of a meaningful relationship between the characters Prithviraj and Siddarth. Vasantabalan was correct in pointing out the underwhelming final act. The absence of emotional connection between Prithviraj and Siddarth resulted in one-dimensional characters, leading to a lack of crescendo for their conflict. The film can be compared to Aadukalam, but the reason that the film worked was not just the mentor-disciple relationship and the love shared between Karuppu and Pettakkaaran. The climax of both films is essentially the same, where there is a confrontation. But in Aadukalam, we can feel how both of them would feel at that point of time. But in Kaaviya Thalaivan, we don't feel anything when Prithviraj confronts Siddarth, or when Siddarth expresses his love for Prithviraj. It felt like a monologue exchange without any soul. While there are many impressive moments in this film, the standout is the Solli Vidu song, which puts a fresh spin on Mahabaratham, where Arjunan calls out Krishna's hypocrisy of trying to appear good while staining his hands with blood.
Kaaviya thalaivan is another movie like Anbe Sivan , where we failed to celebrate when it released in theaters

The problem with Kaviya thalaivan was too many things stuffed into one film and the climax totally on different thread.
Movie was heavily inspired by Chinese movie " Farewell my concubine". But director was not able to bring intensity or the depth of Chinese movie.

You are a superb director. No doubt, but KT is not your best work. Angadi theru and aravaan really took me to different world. Great thought process. Even Kt was good at story line. Somewhere that magic is missing in execution and with choice of actors except nasar and Prithviraj. At times things may not workout its fine. But you have a great potential.
You deserve great place.

Good chat, Vishal. I wish you had asked him, if he considered or approached Ilaiyaraaja ever for this project. One of the criticisms when the film came out was that it was a little modern in its approach to music that didn't fit well with the film. It is a good soundtrack on its own. He does mention Ilaiyaraaja when he talks about the initial casting ambitions. Would have been interesting to know. Great chat nevertheless!

Its a great movie !! just not made for commercial success ! its a pure tragedy drama and it rarely becomes a success in TN ! could have made some sort of twist in the end instead of making the hero and villain dies which makes the movie even more tragic than it actually travelled ! Even rajapart rangadurai has a positive boost in the end with freedom dramas....same portion in this movie didnt create a impact....even if surya and vikram had acted in it also wouldnt have the saved the movie from commercial failure....inum jaasthi ah thaan aagirukum !

If Mohanlal acts in biography of TR , how he will act ? Can he do underplay the acting? If so he won't justify personality of TR , most Mallus are biased idiots , they think everyone should behave in the same way (so called underplay ) in reality everyone behaves differently for the same emotions or situation in real life.. For a death.. some will shout and cry , some will just shed tears , some will go silent ... There is nothing called natural acting bcoz it's an oxymoron, the moment director cut the shots , add background music , wear makeup .. it's not more "natural" .. there is convincing acting & unconvincing acting ..which is also subjective

There can only be subtle and exaggerated performance..
The pitch of a performance is dependent on many factors like character being real or fictional, milieu, timeline where story is based, ethnic background, country where its set, the target audience etc..

According to Kaaviya Thalaivan, Villain Prithviraj outperform his character which made Hero Siddharth as dummy. Even Siddharth face shows his insecure feeling in his performance comparing to Prithviraj in movie itself, that made his act in that movie does not seem natural too. The script was too good otherwise. Casting only a drawback which pulled the curtains down earlier. My personal opinion. Give a comeback sir your other movies are too good in particular Veyil and Angaadi theru.👍

1) Impact of Cinema on Drama
2) People moving out from Drama to Cinema
3) Drama on Hindu Mytholgy vs Drama on Current affairs and its reception with people!

It’s a movie purely based on stage drama not cinema. It’s about the two main characters & how they are rebellious to become the best drama “hero” hence the title “Kaaviya Thalaivan” I kindly ask you to rewatch the movie or if you haven’t pls watch.😂

In the 1st half Siddharth character was a sex thirsty guy who would f*** anything that moves. There was not enough exploration on the rivalry between the two upcoming drama actors and most of the scenes were wasted on a useless romantic angle. Even in the 2nd half out of random they discovered that India is under British rule and the Siddharth character suddenly became a freedom fighter.
