I have a little of that 3rd gear problem too it seems. On quick shifts with rapid acceleration 3rd gear some times just doesn't seat properly, like it's trying to kick me out. It has never completely prevented me from shifting though. 2023 WRX Base bought used at 9k miles (12000 miles now). Only shifter mod I have is a left side BilletWorkz shift stop to remove the slop from 1st and 2nd.

Havent had the 3rd gear issues yet (1.5 years 13k miles) but i constantly have clutch or throwout issues within my pedal for shifting. ive been trying to have them fix, really hope they do it this time so i can send it finally lmao. But i do get weirdness thru 1/2 mostly, but the same thing im just nervous to tune it especially in its current condition, but they do seem to drive better when your more aggressive, more you baby the weirder it drives (for me)

Have a '22 premium. I've had 2 instances where I could not shift into 3rd gear from 2nd. Happened both times within a 2 week or so period early on after I got the car. I've owned several other manual cars and never had a lock out like this.
Anyway my take on this is that this happened both times shortly after I basically started from 2nd gear after coming to a complete stop on a downhill slope (at a light and also at a stop sign so I was already rolling slowly in neutral after stopping when I engaged 2nd gear skipping 1st as opposed to starting from 1st).
I would do this with my other manual cars I've owned with no problems but maybe this car doesn't like it. I always make sure to start from 1st gear now from a stop even though I may be already rolling down hill in neutral after coming to a complete stop and haven't had the issue since.
Also, I brought it in to the dealer to look at and they said they did not see or notice any problems or could replicate the issue

Maybe needs stiffer motor mount? Sometimes on hard acceleration could be a bit too much movement and impacts the shift?

    • @AutoEnthusiast

I figured out the 3rd gear lockout. Had it for a long time and finally decided to buy the shift stop for 1&2 and I found out from installing that shift stop that my oem one was installed too far too the right. Adjusting the oem one completely fixed my 3rd gear issue. I’m sure a lot of people are experiencing the same thing I did. Only took me 59k miles to figure it out on my 22 vb. I’d try fixing your oem shift stop if your having issues and see if it helps because the shift stop does actually change the path of your gears in a significant way.

I bought my 22 WRX new in Oct 2022. Zero issues with transmission. Although in my error I had it at 70% reduction in shifter throw for 9 months 🤦🏻‍♂️ Hopefully I don’t experience long term effects for that. Currently at 15% reduction love there.
Though I did change to Moltul gear oil with in two months of owning it. Stiffer mounts front to back as well. Maybe the quality oil and stiffing up the drive trane has kept my transmission running smooth 🤷🏻‍♂️
Oh And I’m pro tuned by Dman, 320hp/374trq.

I’m doing the same mounts, gear oil change and short shifter with my 23 premium. I really do think that the factory motor mounts, pitch stop and trans mounts are actually causing problems. I can feel my motor moving around a lot when rowing the gears to recline. Putting high quality gear oil in the trans and diffs should be one of the first mods done.

I picked up my 2023 Premium WRX 6 weeks ago and have had zero issues with the transmission. I really think you should take it into the dealership and have them check it out and if necessary have them bring in a field tech from SOA to look into it while it is still under warranty. There is no reason you should have to deal with this issue if it is something that happens more than once in a blue moon.
