  • My First Regrets Buying A 2022 Subaru WRX....
Yes I said it, I am starting to have reservations about buying my 2022 Subaru WRX. I am not sure if the VB WRX is better than the VA WRX at this point. Maybe it's my Subaru WRX journey veering, but the short is that this video is a deep dive on Subaru WRX Ownership, buying WRX, selling WRX, and just generally a dive into my 2022 Subaru WRX.

Crazy, driving my stock VB WRX feeling all the feels you describe - I have never driven any other sport-ish cars. Ignorance is bliss I guess. See I bought my VB knowing it came fast enough - I know I can do more to get more HP but I am happy with what I have in stock - its not the fastest on the road, but its fast enough. This really brings home what your last video focused on - the mind set of the WRX driver might be changing. Grown ass adults being frumpy.

My car is also stock, and I'm very happy for it. Of course it could be faster, but then you're spending a lot of money and breaking shit. Case in point, everybody is swapping out their transmission now to handle the extra power. And then of course you're going to need better brakes, because the stock ones suck. And when you do tuning and other engine mods, you're going to have to do more safety mods. You go down a rabbit hole. I enjoy the car for what it is, nothing more nothing less. It's an awesome car on the twisties, and fun on the highway too. I enjoy the car for as long as I can, while keeping my warranty intact.

I got my first WRX VB (2023 year premium model) about 8 weeks ago. Had a 2024 Civic Si for a brief period before the WRX and have had a few other MT cars over the years. After living with the VB for this short time, I feel it is fast enough for spirited driving (not off the line, of course), handles reasonably well at high speeds and in tight corners (with summer performance tires, not A/S or winters ones), has an old time analog shifter feel (a bit notchy and clunky, but fine) and has the benefit of AWD for fantastic grip/traction in wet weather and snowy conditions. The gas mileage may not be great, but comparted to a 2024 Crosstrek Sport I borrowed from a friend for a couple of weeks which got only about 2 MPG better fuel economy, the WRX is not really that bad for a Subaru. If I had to sum up this car (VB model) to someone who never drove/owned one, I would say it is a jack of all trades, master of none.

I think this car is a blast 100% stock. Then again, I live in an area where there's lots of nice curvy roads. That's where this car shines. Handles so good, feels so neutral. I feel like they made the car stiffer, but more comfortable at the same time. They put a lot of money into the suspension engineering on the VB.

This is youtuber decisionmaking syndrome. Take youtube and content out of your decisions that affect your life. Take a step back and find out what YOU want to do. You said you're literally said you're comparing stock to protuned. Install videos you've done on this car are overlays and wheels, not so much as an intake or exhaust(i think), stickers dont make the car more exciting. I'm not telling you to keep the car, im just saying do what you need to do. If buying a cheaper car is easier to mod for you, then thats what works for you, but dont let youtube metrics talk you into buying a 30k car that you can't mod if modding is what you want to do. Take a step away from youtube and ask yourself what you actually want. And if that's not the VB, don't waste money modifying it further when that money can just go into the VA you actually want.

I don't get it either. I went from a 2020 STI to my 23 WRX! I'm full bolt ons running stage 2 and the difference is night and day! The VB is overwhelmingly a superior chassis. I actually regret not selling my STI sooner. The VA is the most unreliable car Subaru has ever engineered hands down, and the non STI WRX feels like a carolla with AWD, the cheap plastic and fabrics used make the car seem discounted... Idk this is my own opinion from owning 4 WRXs and 1 STI so I am biased a bit, but I gotta say the VB is definitely the best car Subaru has made in the past 20 years.

I did make it to the end! I think your desire for big power and a raw connection will be difficult because so many of the modern big power cars don't have that connection. I'll also say that pursuing the fastest shift time can result in you not perceiving the power going off and back on, which dulls the experience. If you go DCT and you're looking to be thrilled, look for something that punches you in the back. Personally, having gone DCT, I think I'll just go manual or torque converter auto in the future. I've come to enjoy time between shifts. If the VA WRX is that special to you, don't make the mistake of looking for what you love in other places than where you know it already is.

Dude is literally scouring the internet trying to find negative things about the generation that happens to maybe 10 people out of 10000, and then starts freaking out and says the generation is shit.
Talking about how all the transmission were failing, 3rd gear is failing, it's a boring dad car.. you're sort of using the platform to vent about how you don't like it and we can tell, just buy something else...
But my man, this WRX is leaps ahead of the old one in so many ways, except "you are not one with the car". The engine is improved, the handling is improved, interior is improved, tuning is massively improved... Selling the VB to get the previous gen and ridding yourself of all these benefits to just "feel the car" is kind of insanity.
if you do an STI drivetrain swap it will be great content for the channel, you can document the whole thing including other power mods, and will definitely be cheaper than a Supra.
If your goal is to "feel the car" cut your springs, I bet the car will feel much more engaging 👍

Sure off the line they’re insane, but I don’t really race on the street off the line. That’s stupid. Mine could run high 10’s with drag radials. Yeah, 650hp will do that in 3150lbs car. The WRX has become a middle-aged crisis fad car with a sprinkle of millennial. Toyota is slowly becoming more controlling of what Subaru does (originally Toyota approached Subaru for help with the FRS and then agreed to invest for a few years, now they own almost 25% and keep buying more stock) and the EPA restrictions do have some effect, for example the VB in US uses 0-W20 and the VB in 5-W30 even though it’s the same engine and chassis, in the US they have to meet a cross-fleet average of like 40-45mpg unlike Japan. As a Subaru Tech who works directly with SoNE and SoA I am pretty confident when I say the new Subaru has been put in a bad position by past leadership. Soon Subaru will just be a strict branch of Toyota. Most drivers that have never driven the older cars will never be able to compare the old Subaru to the new.
