It is. I get it, people don't like change, but the amount of positives greatly outweigh the subjective looks which have always been present with the WRX. 9.5/10 would buy again and recommend.

Just want to know if they burn oil or have head gasket problems, but I've read their turbo engines are build stronger than their non turbo or maybe that problem was only limited to ones from years ago?
@@truckergilligangilligan5877 headgaskets are non issues on turbo models the oil burn will be a little common on these engines and natural with the design since they are flat engines the way the PCV system circulates it just naturally happens on my FA20 WRX the most I’ve seen is about half a quart and it has 60,000 miles. I think the Base is a bargain, bang for the buck. I don't know of any new car that has its features (engine power, awd, usable 4 seats, competent handling, etc) at anything close to the price. As you move up in the models I think the competition gets closer. But around $32k, the Base hard to beat.

Love the base, just so that I can get a key to physically turn On th engine and see the analog gauges wake up. Fair but the toyota 1.6 I3 has held a ton of power on stock internals and been fairly reliable. Boost pressure/turbo size doesn't always equate to more or less reliable.

Okay so. I’m picking one up on Thursday I will be getting the limited trim in the 6 speed and I’m coming from a 2014 Mazda 6 6 speed that I love how it feels I’ve had it for 8 years now and it has 135k on it. I drove a 2023 GT today with 1500 miles on the dealership did 1k break in just for test drives. They gave me the car for 2 hours by myself and I drove it. Hard. I’m 100% new to paddle shifters and they are not my thing. I tried to like it. It felt weird even with 8 gears and running on highway driving like an ass the whole time I’m talking steady cursing around everyone at 95 holding 4500-5000 rpm for 1 whole hour without interruption and minimal slowdown. And I also drove it around some windy back roads on the economy mode just enjoying the ride of the car itself but still not liking the automatic.
I went to play at the dealer. Base was 29k. 31k and change for Premium. Clutch was odd, felt rough on pavement (kind of expected). I hear many dealers are not seeing these sell well. I liked it. Wasn’t in love. The cladding looks weird.

I was a bit nervous when i felt the trunk weight when i purchased since i use it everytime, throwing my back pack and gear before driving off. The trunk was designed never to fail period. The car is 100% 50/50 weight. This car holds 4 six foot men no issues. No parasitic draw. I "set" my clutch (didnt even know i did) after about 8 montha of ownership and smelled clutch after hitting it hard. That has never happend since then. The steering is the best. The HVAC controls are perfect. My only gripe... (I've driven all trim levels except TR) the suspension is harsh in parking lots.
I think you are right. If new generations were perfect out of the box, they wouldn't need mid-cycle refreshing. For 2024 I would hope to see an 8 or 9 inch infotainment screen with physical knobs/switches/buttons for the HVAC on the base model, and Subaru cleaning up the cladding and rear bumper on all models.
Before I dive in the video, As you talk about the "GT" trim. I have no idea what Subaru was thinking when they added the "GT" trim. In my book or how I saw it, Hopefully Im not alone in this, but WRX was equivalent to a GT trim. It essentially was honesty, Then the WRX STi was the same as GT-R, GT500, Z06, GT-RS, or an R series. Now Im not talking in terms of performance or even saying they are the same as that said car. No! Im strickly talking in terms of Trim Hierarchy or Trim progression. So when you tell me "Hey I have a WRX GT!" All I hear is "Hey I have a GT GT" Literally makes no sense.
Great review Tyler, if I were into these kinda modern capable sports sedans I would have looked at previous generations and get an STI, BTW it's a strange one but it'd beat Lexus GS450H at a drag race right?
Thank you, It would be really close but i would probably bet my money on a gs450h because the awd launch would need to be nailed for it to beat the lexus if we're going off of the numbers posted by the lexus back around 2015
Lol the CVT. My daughter bought an Impreza with the CVT earlier this year and if you aren’t into speed, or cars in general, its perfect. Only thing I don’t like is the hyper-quick steering. Turing the steering wheel 1mm, is nearly a lane change
The CVT is actually pretty good in the GT trim. In my mind, Comfort and Normal Mode shift like my wife’s Impreza. Sport is tuned perfectly for city driving (for me) and Sport+ shifts are really quick.
Awesome review! Just got my new 22 WRX! I've notice 1st to 2nd is a bit bouncy, even with a slow release of the clutch. Any suggestions?? I usually shift between 2500-3000 rpm.
Hard to say what might be causing it outside of just getting used to the bite point. I usually just push in the clutch halfway or until it’s not biting and shift. Also don’t want the revs to fall too fast or slow if you’re going for the smoothest shift possible. If you’re trying to go fast, it’s pretty inevitable for it to be bouncy!
@@bkhavityoway23 Jerky I meant to say! LOL! Is only from 1st to 2nd. I do notice when shifting arund 2000rpm or even 3200rpm the jerkiness is way less.
"and if you don't want to row your own gears you can get a CVT...an SPT." For those of us in the rest of the world who import from Japan as a grey import: :-\
I detail cars for a living and do ceramic coatings. The interior in the Honda is NOT built well in the least. The subaru is much better in every way, even materials. I can't count how many times i have been vacuuming a Honda or Toyota and had the carpet literally fall apart or pull away from the edges where is supposed to be tucked. Not to mention how easy it is to stain the plastic in a Honda. You might like the style of the Honda, but it is not nearly as well built as the price would suggest
Hey… wondering how bad it is with confort and noise, I wanted to get a Sti as a daily, but I come from a Subaru Crosstrek which is super confy. In France today I can only get the old version sti, but I wonder if the old version Sti or this wrx is that bad as a daily ( bad roads, highway…..) Thanks 😉
Nailed it; bought one as my everyday driver in the upper midwest US; ticks all the boxes, and as someone in their mid 30's it still is rowdy enough to sate my appetite for a weekend toy most of the time.
Anyone in Canada know the lead time on these for orders? Doesn't seem like there's any in stock. The price is as about as good as it gets for an awd turbo new car these days. Need to replace my ralliart eventually.
I have spoken to two different dealerships in Western Canada. One told me it would be a four to six month wait and another one told me it would be an eight to ten month wait.
Thanks for the great review. I had a lot of fun test driving a 2022 WRX and a 2018 WRX. I'd love to get a WRX, but it's too cheap looking and feeling. For the same money I can get a 2-3-year-old BMW that blows it away in almost every category.
Thank you for watching, I think a used bmw is objectively better in most ways, yet I'd still much rather get the WRX for resale, parts and maintenance cost (on average) and the personality too.
Well it's not entirely fare to compare a used vehicle to a new one. With that aside, it is hard to find a 2-3 year old BMW with xDrive and a manual, at least nearby me.
Trying to put that together as we speak! The gt model unfortunately sold before it even hit the ground but the same dealer has a base cvt model coming in too!
@bobhebblewhite1685 want to drive real fast in a vb wrx? first put down $1,000 and wait for 3 months. go down to the stealership and pay the rest of the money and collect the car. then drive it for 1,600 kms (yes i am not a yank) to run the engine in. so far i have 800 kms on the clock and maybe one day soon (probably next year) i may get to find out how fast my car will go. it is all in the waiting!
The black body cladding looks awful with most colors but I saw a black WRX and it actually looked pretty good. This is the first time I have checked out the channel and it was definitely a solid review. Subscribed!
That really is tricky, I would say the GTI impressed me more with how fun, comfortable, practical and efficient it was. However, the last WRX gen was more reliable than the previous GTI, the new WRX feels more analog (which I prefer), and the all wheel drive is awesome.
@@PQR5CHE i believe you, i drove both previous generations wrx and golf 7 gti. WRX, spending some money to fix it up, and then driving around in an actually good-looking Subaru then going for this new version. Even in base trim.

For 2024 I would hope to see an 8 or 9 inch infotainment screen with physical knobs/switches/buttons for the HVAC on the base model, and Subaru cleaning up the cladding and rear bumper on all models.
I like the rear look
the price is Ok and the rest is only good for fans of this car, thank you for the review.
that punch got me GOOD....lol
Damn that punch though holy fuck 😂😂😂
You’re hilarious! Great review!
So when you tell me "Hey I have a WRX GT!" All I hear is "Hey I have a GT GT" Literally makes no sense.
dude that punch looked like it hurt
Great review Tyler, if I were into these kinda modern capable sports sedans I would have looked at previous generations and get an STI, BTW it's a strange one but it'd beat Lexus GS450H at a drag race right?
Thank you, It would be really close but i would probably bet my money on a gs450h because the awd launch would need to be nailed for it to beat the lexus if we're going off of the numbers posted by the lexus back around 2015
Bro has some guns on him 💪
thanks dog
that punch LOL
I like and want one
Lol the CVT. My daughter bought an Impreza with the CVT earlier this year and if you aren’t into speed, or cars in general, its perfect.
Only thing I don’t like is the hyper-quick steering. Turing the steering wheel 1mm, is nearly a lane change
The CVT is actually pretty good in the GT trim. In my mind, Comfort and Normal Mode shift like my wife’s Impreza. Sport is tuned perfectly for city driving (for me) and Sport+ shifts are really quick.
Less the Rubbermaid pieces, it looks ok. The difference in price between the base and sport is substantial.
Love mine.
If you’re trying to go fast, it’s pretty inevitable for it to be bouncy!
bouncy as in jerky?
@@bkhavityoway23 Jerky I meant to say! LOL! Is only from 1st to 2nd. I do notice when shifting arund 2000rpm or even 3200rpm the jerkiness is way less.
@@victorpena6543 is it an issue with not giving it gas when letting off the clutch? Why does it jerk? Do you have to gas it at all when you shift?
@@bkhavityoway23 The issue is not from a stop, is shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I love it!
Can we just get a 2.4 turbo crosstrek please..
How about a STI trim!
"and if you don't want to row your own gears you can get a CVT...an SPT."
For those of us in the rest of the world who import from Japan as a grey import: :-\
I would definitely color match all the cladding. Also, it really doesn't make sense to put Recaro seats in a grand touring edition.
The gt is stupid without manual option.
Yay no Markup!
I Love mine too !
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Honda must be proud of their tail light design ;-)
In France today I can only get the old version sti, but I wonder if the old version Sti or this wrx is that bad as a daily ( bad roads, highway…..)
Thanks 😉
Saw this guy get punched twice for referencing CVT’s. Now I have to go purchase a manual WRX tomorrow.
2DS lookin ah infotainment. Car seems great though.
a good way to put it
Good review but Royal East side Bloomington, Volkswagen and Subaru all have a $2,000 or more markup on their vehicles.
Thank you, that's Royal South. I'll talk to them to confirm that but their website still showing msrp.
What color blue is this?
I'd buy one as a more fun daily. But it's not a dream about car to overly take care of and want to bring to the track or meets.
Nailed it; bought one as my everyday driver in the upper midwest US; ticks all the boxes, and as someone in their mid 30's it still is rowdy enough to sate my appetite for a weekend toy most of the time.
I thought the short throw comes with the sti shifter knob
So your base did have a regular shifter
Am I right?
No, those are separate accessories, unfortunately.
That vas good.
@@jasonkay869wow! Common, and aggressively discounted in the US
You looks pretty tall, may I ask how tall are you? Do you have a good headroom in the WRX?
He says this if you watch the video. He’s 6’3”
With that aside, it is hard to find a 2-3 year old BMW with xDrive and a manual, at least nearby me.
reliability..... Bmw's suck at being reliable. Plus higher insurance. Higher maintenece costs.
@@Realistick BTW, I didn't buy the BMW!
they do make a wagon down under....
Don't remind me😭
Subaru says that the CVT is better. Could you do a test drive of the CVT.
Trying to put that together as we speak! The gt model unfortunately sold before it even hit the ground but the same dealer has a base cvt model coming in too!
@@Realistick cool thanks
Better, how?
@bobhebblewhite1685
want to drive real fast in a vb wrx? first put down $1,000 and wait for 3 months. go down to the stealership and pay the rest of the money and collect the car. then drive it for 1,600 kms (yes i am not a yank) to run the engine in. so far i have 800 kms on the clock and maybe one day soon (probably next year) i may get to find out how fast my car will go. it is all in the waiting!
eye spy lake monroe :)
CVT trans is so hated by enthusiasts.
Why on earth use a CVT in a car made for enthusiasts?
The black body cladding looks awful with most colors but I saw a black WRX and it actually looked pretty good. This is the first time I have checked out the channel and it was definitely a solid review. Subscribed!
This reviewer: reviews a brand new car still in break in period, takes it to redline🤦♂️
This or the new Mk8 Golf GTI…?
hahaha, same thing here bro, both in the same price range but just cant decide, it's a hard decision!
That really is tricky, I would say the GTI impressed me more with how fun, comfortable, practical and efficient it was. However, the last WRX gen was more reliable than the previous GTI, the new WRX feels more analog (which I prefer), and the all wheel drive is awesome.
@@borisstupar5147 Haha, for real brother. I’m leaning towards the GTI, just so much more refined. I do love Subies AWD and resale value though.
@@Realistick Decisions decisions… 😵💫 I’ve had 3 Subies, so it’s hard to switch!!
@@PQR5CHE i believe you, i drove both previous generations wrx and golf 7 gti. The way it drives i like WRX better but consumption is a bit too much and has no issues while GTI had a lot of problems, just with 9000km on the clock model 2019 was leaking oil, so yeah reliability issues! WRX should come with refreshment in 2023 they said, they'll change some details on it, maybe cladding will match the car from factory :), will wait a bit!
I liked your enthusiasm, but I can tell you’re not a car guy
I noticed reviewers will nearly always callout an ugly product as polarising or subjective. Anyway fine review otherwise.
Why would anyone get this over the new BRZ? If practically is your concern then go for the civic type R or gr Corolla.
Because it has awd, 5 usable seats, is not going to be as impossible to find, and is cheaper than the type r and corolla gr.
I bought a BRZ and can absolutely see why someone would want a WRX instead. Corolla/Type R are in a different price/availability bracket.
Many reasons...4 doors, AWD, more trunk space...not everyone lives in Cali or Florida :D
Availability
Rear looks like 10th gen civic
🥊😆
Subaru's marketing department ensures strict SPT labeling
Who designed it? Not the prettiest......
looks like a smaller Legacy. soooooooo much plastic. terrible job Subaru
Overpriced for what you get. The body cladding is ugly, requires premium fuel, and even then (even by Sports sedan standards) the fuel economy is just bad. Seriously, an enthusiast would be better off tracking down a used example of the previous Gen. WRX, spending some money to fix it up, and then driving around in an actually good-looking Subaru then going for this new version. Even in base trim.
Drive it first, she is ugly but it's more comfortable, better powerband, gets similar mileage, and with the price of used ones, it makes little sense to get one unless you can't afford it.
It doesmt require premium fuel. The VB can take low test gas
That black trim is hideous. That alone is a dealbreaker.
The only car that gets slower with every new generation that’s released.
It's identical to the previous car but feels better and has proven to handle some impressive power.
No, that would be the Si…
@@billisdewillis5 Si is not slow in the least. The power delivery is just different in the Si. I've owned an Si and I own a 2023 WRX now and the Si is not a slow car in the slightest.
Something that ugly is not subjective. I saw one the other day…. You can almost forgive that cladding over the wheels, but that plastic backend is just awful
Commenting on looks is exactly that...subjective lmao. You aren't the only opinion out there. Brush up on your definitions.
@@TenHigh5s if you thing something that ugly looks great, great. It’s too bad for the last generation of WRX that will be made that this was their result. A lowered CrossTrek. Lol. And, I don’t need to brush up on anything. Ugly as fuck is the majority opinion out there
I find this car offensive.
