CVTs hamper performance and sometimes mpg as well. It may not be the case in WRXs, I haven't looked it up. I'm really curious to know what this sounds like in person. if I close my eyes, I could easily mistake this for the new BRZ.
I don’t care about the looks lol. It could be the most beautiful thing in the world and I still wouldn’t buy it because of the open diffs, 50/50awd, and brake by wire. Ew.
@@k.i.s.s.. two words why the 22+ wrx is the dumbest purchase ever: GR Corolla The wrx has open diffs, janky full time 50/50 awd, numb brake by wire that don’t communicate to your foot when you’re boiling your fluid or starting your baby brakes on fire. The GR Corolla whips the 22+ wrx in every measureable way. Also it has LSD’s, and a great rear bias but variable awd system. If you don’t know what limited slip diffs and rear-bias awd systems are, and you don’t know what steering and brake feel are, and you don’t know what a good engine sounds like, and you don’t know what a good looking car is: then the 22+ wrx may be for you 😂
I think what we're going to see in the future is a lot of people swapping in the new powertrain with older bodystyles, once there's a supply of crashed WRX's to pick bones from
Analog gauges, real buttons (especially on the base model with the smaller screen) manual handbrake, manual transmission, fabric seats, simple charms from 20 years ago! Yes please.
“It was a blunt object that got the job done” might be my favorite description of a vehicle I’ve ever heard.. pretty accurate as well (tho imo the third gen was mildly attractive)
@7:24 I think part of the dwindling sales of manual transmissions has to do with how crappy many modern manual transmissions feel with rev hang, plasticky feeling shifts, vague clutch pedal etc. That’s a big part of the reason I bought a ‘22 WRX with the manual as it’s one of the few good manuals out there now.
A year later, and Subaru has eliminated the one super-economy manual transmission car that you could get, the Impreza now no longer comes with a manual transmission. SAVE THE MANUALS! As a younger guy I’ve had no chances to get into manual transmissions at all! This isn’t fair!
I love this review. I drive the 2020 Impreza sport hatchback with a manual transmission. There are quite a number of similarities like how the symmetrical AWD eliminates the torque steer, how the car accelerates with ease, how it is very enjoyable to drive. My Impreza is very much like the Civic, in which it is an economy car first, then something sporty after that. My Impreza has a lower power than the Civic as well, but my enjoyment in driving my Impreza is almost equal to how Tedward drives his Civic. It was an insightful review with how the 2022 WRX has the enjoyable quality in tact like the Civic.
6:16 Definitely one of the first things I noticed when I test drove my '21 WRX, felt pretty weird sitting so high up compared to the '18 Jetta 5MT I had before it.
Subaru be like that, even in the legacy you sit higher then in other cars like bmw and saab. But once you find your perfect relaxing position while still keeping a nice and comfortable 9-3 position on the steeringwheel everything just falls into place for a pleasant but sporty drive! Also upgrading to leather seats helps with comfort, you can get those pretty cheap from a crashed legacys or outbacks.
I’m from Sanford Maine and go to Newington pretty frequently, I love this channel and seeing all the roads I drive on so often lol (even though I could just go drive on them myself… but I digress!)
As someone who has never seen a WRX (i don’t think its even being sold here in Germany) i really like the design. I mean the new m3 design is pretty bad but we all adjusted to it, this one looks really good in comparison. Just a bit to high up. I dont even mind the wheel arches, they look line something porsche would do on their off road models.
We recently bought a '23 WRX base with a MT, and so far I'm very happy with the purchase. I had an '18 Civic SI that had horrible oil dilution, and Honda would not help unless it stalled or had major engine problems...
Thanks for the video! This is my first time seeing a video-based walk around of the new style. It's really not so bad. Also looks great in black, hiding the cladding really well.
I’ve watched so many reviews on this car and all the talk about the looks….finally saw one in person at a dealership and it looks way better in person. Was very surprised
The only thing preventing this from being a great daily driver in my opinion is that meh fuel economy and the fact that it needs premium fuel to power it.
I love this car for what it is, but I definitely feel like Subaru is trying to change it from a sports car to a sport-infused daily driver. Which i guess is a good thing for sales but not for the people who want a WRX for the sports car experience
Neat to see you hanging out in my neck of the woods. I live right over in Newmarket and my life essentially revolves around Newington and routes 4 and 16 where you just were. There's some much nicer driving roads a bit further east.
instant peak torque at 2000rpm, improved linear delivery of power throughout compared to previous gen. Even turning on the AC on the old one you have to be careful.
Tedward wonderfully said.. All points were very valid, Sir. And as history has shown us, each and every iteration which has come out of the WRX/STI, people tend to bash for a while, then come to the conclusion that they love it no matter what. I personally have loved Subaru as a brand for a long, long time(Decades), and as a result still love our 2020 STI(Yes, stock, no modded like 99% of these kids).
Only gripe I have with my 20 wrx, is the equal length headers that Subaru decides to go with on the fa power plant. Just doesn’t offer that classic boxer grunt that we all love ❤️
I'm always confused when people say this one isn't quick. I've seen videos of it beating the GR Corolla in a drag race 2/3 times with professional drivers and it hangs with the Type R till around 3rd gear and then the HP/Torque difference kicks in, but with a simple 91 octane tune and in intake this produces more than 320whp
I own one and its a great car. I get that people dont like change. I didnt either in first. But if you can get over the little things. This car is very well designed
I think this is pretty great value for the money in terms of performance.. and a lot of potential as well with the amount of aftermarket support available.. in both cosmetics and performance. Not bad Subaru
I have already ordered mine should be coming next month, I ordered a 2022 WRX Premium with the six speed manual in WR BlUE PEARL. First time ever ordering a WRX , I have never driven one before
Keep up the good work! I'd like to see an AMC Javelin 304 driving sometime it's unfortunate STI has been discontinued, but the WRX will maybe never stop being a great car
i just bought a crosstrek with a 6 speed manual..... i know it's not fast but it does get exceptional gas mileage. the shifter is straight out of this car, i think quite a bit of the drivetrain is from the WRX...... the driveline is quite a bit stronger then the CVT i manage to get 32.8 MPG with my 2022 crosstrek 2.0 manual, way better then what the EPA rates it at. we have allot of hills here, so if it was flat and level im confident i would get even more mileage. very happy with my car so far. i still have my lightly modded 2003 bonneville SSEi as a play thing.... remember those? they arent very common anymore. 3800 supercharged
I ordered a '21 Crosstrek Limited last August with the 2.4. Much improved power than the 2.0 .... its still no killer power plant, but it serves its purpose for what I bought it for. I'm at about 32.4 - 32.6 mpg in mixed city & highway driving. Its got some added weight to it also, with full undercarriage rust proofing. I woulda liked the 2.4 to be an option with the manual, but its not. We're good though, we have 2 manual vehicles to tool around in.
The wrx was on my list during my search and I test drove it. I enjoyed it, but I was confused why you couldn’t get the top trim with a manual transmission. It’s unfortunate because it seems every car I looked at in this segment had that one big head scratcher that prevented it from being perfect and it would have been so easy for them to knock it out of the park
Because Subaru is moving away from manual seeing as how any car that can compete with it has an auto version. Also I have a manual and an auto and the auto is still quick and is awesome to drive
I think each gen of the WRX/STI is beautiful in its own way. For me the 2010 Hatch and 2021 STI are my two favorites. This new design almost made me vomit the first time I saw the tail end and wheel arches....But over the past couple weeks of looking at it, it has really grown on me! I hope to put a down payment on a 22, either black, dark grey or silver I think. Gonna go with the Limited model as I really want the Harmon Kardon sound system. Might even have them add the short throw shifter, STI exhaust and light up badges as well.
I love my 19 WRX with the FA20 engine. Can't help but notice that a lot of people who test drive these cars get up around 40-45 MPH and put the car in 6th gear. The weak link in these engines are the rods - they are offset from center at the crank and the Achilles heel is lugging the engine in too high a gear. On a perfectly flat surface staying out of boost that's probably not a big deal but personally I don't even hit 5th gear until I'm at 50-55 MPH. I've read a lot of forums and seen a lot of RUclips videos of people pulling these engines for rod knock issues. Sure, that can be the result of abuse/overrevving the engine, etc, but with the high-pressure direct injection and boost from the turbo being in too high a gear is about the worst things you can do aside from poor maintenance. If saving fuel is the goal I'd buy something else.
The plastic fenders are going to prevent the common rust areas on previous Subarus. Especially where these will be sold most. (Heavy snow and salted areas, especially New England)
the internet shit talks this car so much but the fact we still get a manual turbo fun car from a small manufacturer is so nice people dont understand how small subaru is compared to say toyota or vw
When pictures of this car were first released, I absolutely hated it. I like to see cars in person before I blatantly state my opinion on looks, and after seeing 4 or 5 now in person, it has not grown on me one bit. When the MK5 Supra came out, I did not like the way it looked in pictures but as I started to see them in person, it really grew on me, unlike the WRX.
@@lucasa7093 also besides the bulky proportions and plastic everywhere, the rear end is not only hideous but completely doesn’t go with the front. which is disappointing bc the front fascia actually looks good imo. it had potential.
with so much trunk space and rear leg room people could expect this wrx to be particularly long, if for some reason they're also expecting it to have an inline 4 under the hood in a longitudinal configuration. (every subaru in their current lineup comes standard with a boxer engine of some sort)

I wish they would bring back the hatch though; I will always find my '10 STi to be the best-looking Subaru.
Ew.
@@WithCarePlz suree
@@k.i.s.s.. two words why the 22+ wrx is the dumbest purchase ever: GR Corolla
The wrx has open diffs, janky full time 50/50 awd, numb brake by wire that don’t communicate to your foot when you’re boiling your fluid or starting your baby brakes on fire.
The GR Corolla whips the 22+ wrx in every measureable way. Also it has LSD’s, and a great rear bias but variable awd system.
If you don’t know what limited slip diffs and rear-bias awd systems are, and you don’t know what steering and brake feel are, and you don’t know what a good engine sounds like, and you don’t know what a good looking car is: then the 22+ wrx may be for you 😂
@@WithCarePlz wow, you can read the brochure!
@@WithCarePlz Sir this is an Arby's.
Yes please.
The base also has a turn key ignition instead of the push button start. 👍🏻
Test drove one, can't wait to pick up one. The looks eventually grew on me, now I can't go back to the old one unless it's an STI
I’m trying to reverse and I feel like I’m burning the clutch when I do it, any tips
6:16 Definitely one of the first things I noticed when I test drove my '21 WRX, felt pretty weird sitting so high up compared to the '18 Jetta 5MT I had before it.
I love my sti but i do miss the comfort of a german interior
Subaru be like that, even in the legacy you sit higher then in other cars like bmw and saab. But once you find your perfect relaxing position while still keeping a nice and comfortable 9-3 position on the steeringwheel everything just falls into place for a pleasant but sporty drive!
Also upgrading to leather seats helps with comfort, you can get those pretty cheap from a crashed legacys or outbacks.
@@Jmrose-lc2uq I know what you mean, I never bothered to test drive the sti since it was out of my price range, but german cars do hit different.
I like the engine, it feels like effortless to move the car body. The transmission is good too, the changing is smooth, not need to rev too high.
love that every car guy when they see another nice car immediately throws a thumbs up and "ooo that nice"
Just got one on Thursday and I'm loving it.
We recently bought a '23 WRX base with a MT, and so far I'm very happy with the purchase. I had an '18 Civic SI that had horrible oil dilution, and Honda would not help unless it stalled or had major engine problems...
Gen 1 gen 2 and now gen 5 the best wrx we will ever see. Can't wait for mine
Thanks for the video! This is my first time seeing a video-based walk around of the new style. It's really not so bad. Also looks great in black, hiding the cladding really well.
Pretty neat seeing Tedward drive through my home town. Love the WRX
Just got mine 2 weeks ago, I always thought it looked good and it drives amazing like crazy amazing
I’ve watched so many reviews on this car and all the talk about the looks….finally saw one in person at a dealership and it looks way better in person. Was very surprised
Agreed.
Picking up my 2024 wrx sport-tech CAD on Tuesday
Neat to see you hanging out in my neck of the woods. I live right over in Newmarket and my life essentially revolves around Newington and routes 4 and 16 where you just were. There's some much nicer driving roads a bit further east.
instant peak torque at 2000rpm, improved linear delivery of power throughout compared to previous gen. Even turning on the AC on the old one you have to be careful.
Why do you have to be careful turning on the AC ?
@@marcusfieldfield4069 cuts the max horsepower you derive from the engine
Love this car, fenders dont bother me. Works for my state. Got a 23 premium in black and I love it so much.
Based on my car choices the 2022 subaru WRX may be my best overall best option for cars that still come with a Manual transmission.
I think they look good in person, I really want one!
Looks good to me, those fenders are sporty looking.
I actually like it, would love to drive it for sure.
Me too
Tedward wonderfully said..
Kinda a trip to click on a video and realize it’s filmed in your hometown, I remember when the subaru dealer he got the car from was a toys r us
Honestly, love the fenders. Always hated looking at rusty fenders in Canada, always thought they should be plastic. Thanks Subaru !
why not make the whole car plastic....they do it with the Corvette, the 4th gen Camaro, and enty of GM models from the 90s
Not bad Subaru
i actually really like the look of this car idk why but its nice imo
I have already ordered mine should be coming next month, I ordered a 2022 WRX Premium with the six speed manual in WR BlUE PEARL. First time ever ordering a WRX , I have never driven one before
Keep up the good work! I'd like to see an AMC Javelin 304 driving sometime
it's unfortunate STI has been discontinued, but the WRX will maybe never stop being a great car
Great video! You're killin it man... Keep up the great work!
Nice, interested to hear your perspective as a new Si owner
@The Real Cat of 2020 no Tedward just bought an Si for a daily. Trolling isn’t supposed to be so obvious btw
@The Real Cat of 2020 just curious what car do you have?
I love the WRX cladding and all...
i just bought a crosstrek with a 6 speed manual..... i know it's not fast but it does get exceptional gas mileage. the shifter is straight out of this car, i think quite a bit of the drivetrain is from the WRX...... the driveline is quite a bit stronger then the CVT
i manage to get 32.8 MPG with my 2022 crosstrek 2.0 manual, way better then what the EPA rates it at. we have allot of hills here, so if it was flat and level im confident i would get even more mileage. very happy with my car so far. i still have my lightly modded 2003 bonneville SSEi as a play thing.... remember those? they arent very common anymore.
We're good though, we have 2 manual vehicles to tool around in.
cant lie. looks good af here
👍 yeah
I really appreciate the cladding in snow 🌨️
I just got mine and its a beast 💪 😎
Styling for me is less polarising than than the last gen civic. It’s not beautiful but I’ve never thought of a Subaru as beautiful.
If the wheel cladding wasn't enough, the black diaper rear bumper thing is something that cannot be unseen.
At what rpm level would be considered lugging the engine 2k?
@@overthebars5172 I definitely keep mine above 2K but it's happiest around 2500
The plastic fenders are going to prevent the common rust areas on previous Subarus. Especially where these will be sold most. (Heavy snow and salted areas, especially New England)
Funny enough, they are not being sold in Sweden, but plenty of other Subaru models are.
I didn't like this WRX in most of the colours they're offering, but i have to say, it looks absoloutely stunning in silver!
Stunning is a reach
the internet shit talks this car so much but the fact we still get a manual turbo fun car from a small manufacturer is so nice people dont understand how small subaru is compared to say toyota or vw
Had us in the first half, i just hate the fenders makes it look like a crossover
@@AlmiightyTim for me, it’s all of the unpainted plastic. If it was all one color, I think it would be slightly better.
@@lucasa7093 fax
@@lucasa7093 also besides the bulky proportions and plastic everywhere, the rear end is not only hideous but completely doesn’t go with the front. which is disappointing bc the front fascia actually looks good imo. it had potential.
wish mine had that engine but cant get over the civic look ill stick to my 2021 wrx
Every time I watch one of your videos it makes me want to make a pov 😫
modern subarus have always had the weird creases and proportions. i like this a lot
U can buy one in black to hide the cladding.
If the WRX STI is gone for good, Subaru should seriously consider giving the BRZ the full STI treatment.
Give it a year or two for the aftermarket companies to fix all these appearance issues and the car will sell like the previous gens do.
If be interested in Subaru if they sold the Levorg here. This is a complete hackjob of the cohesive Levorg design from the middle backwards
The turn signal sounds the same as in my outback, I have the base 2.5 L H4 outback and I love it's power for my daily driver...
with so much trunk space and rear leg room people could expect this wrx to be particularly long, if for some reason they're also expecting it to have an inline 4 under the hood in a longitudinal configuration.
(every subaru in their current lineup comes standard with a boxer engine of some sort)
There just something about silver cars that do it for me
imagine if the civic si was .2-4 liters bigger
i think the interior is interesting but much prefer the civics over this.
Seems like a fun performance daily. Just purchase it in black to hide the ugly fenders.
Like with most cars, i’m sure these will look great with some suspension and aftermarket wheels.
Love that bridge! used to cruise my Evo around those roads when i went to UNH. Awesome in the autumn too! still buzz up there once in a while from stoughton to visit.
love that they put a stick in a 2022 car
Absolutely Incredible Subaru woohoo ❤
I'll never be able to get over that back. Which really sucks, I was in the market for a car and it was between a WRX and a Elyntra N.
-speed limit 30
-sitting at 30 hits throttle
he just like me fr
Drove one, it was great, only thing that I am hesitant about is, the car has no crash rating.
