      However to get into top Colleges and Universities one ought to get a score of 1300 to 1400 in order to be taken seriously by the Colleges along with thy Essays and high school grades.

    Literally the SAT is pointless. Like I get what its trying to do.....but at the same time colleges shouldn't choose a student based on 1 test they took on a particular day/or any day. Plus these test ain't cheap lol. Hopefully everyone in this comment section did great. I'm happy cause I passed my goal, but it wasn't easy.

    • @IrisPeng
      @IrisPeng 5 лет назад +18

      You’re very incorrect when you say colleges choose students based on one test. Nowadays, more and more colleges are doing holistic review in which you only need to meet a benchmark for tests, while essays and extracurriculars are much more important

    • @Dev-zd3rx
      @Dev-zd3rx 5 лет назад +2

      @@IrisPeng I made a 1420 while my friend made a little lower yet is more involved at my school and guess who got accepted and rejected into the main college in our state. As long as you do good in your SAT you have nothing to worry about. Which I think is sad and colleges should balance it out more.

    I got a 1490 on the PSAT/NMSQT, but I haven't taken the actual SAT yet and I'm planning on the March date but I'm just so scared I'm gonna do terrible :,( I'm pretty sure I made the cutoff for the NMS though, I have a 223 and I don't think any state has ever had a cutoff higher than that; my Asian parents were so happy about it but I'm so worried I'm gonna get less than a 1500 on the actual one and my goal is to only take it once asdfghjkl

    As I'm sure you know, you have a Selection Index score of 223, which is expected meet or exceed the cutoff for NMSF status in even the highest states, as well as outside the US and all boarding schools. So even if you are in California, NJ, MD, MA, or the District of Columbia, you are all but a lock for semifinalist. Congrats!
    Oh, and for the trolls who say "so what?", you will be offered full ride scholarships at some schools (U of OK, for example), as well as substantial merit awards at others. NMSF is a nice addition to your Common App, for sure. The only way NMSF is meaningless is for kids applying to the very top tier schools, where every applicant is expected to be on the level of a NMSF.

    • @IrisPeng
      @IrisPeng 5 лет назад

      NMSF is very different than receiving an actual national merit scholarship. In my school, every year we get anywhere ranging from 25-40 semifinalists but not many actually get the scholarship. Plus, I’m pretty sure the final award is only $2500 which is hardly anything- maybe a semester/year worth of textbooks but that’s about it. Most people I know try for national merit just for the clout.

    • @ski999
      @ski999 5 лет назад

      @@IrisPeng "Most people I know try for national merit just for the clout."
      Yes, exactly this. Becoming an actual NMSF is the hard part. Finalist status simply means your school representative submits a form that claims you aren't a lousy person, and you go on to achieve a qualifying score on the SAT - which in your case can be substantially lower than your PSAT score.
      Becoming a National Merit Scholar happens when you are either chosen to receive NM money (for this you are selected from a pool within your state), receive corporate money (for this your parent has to work for a company that sponsors the competition), or you have to attend a college that gives their own NM award money. Receiving the title National Merit Scholar isn't the goal for a huge portion of students, since many kids take the ACT instead of the SAT, don't have a parent who works for a particular company, or don't attend a college that is involved in the NM Scholarship program.
      The lasting "prestige" is in what kkateli already done: score wicked high on the PSAT. That's a solid addition to her Common App 'resume'.

    Currently, I am a sophomore and we took the PSAT (the National Merit scholarship version) and I got a 1030 and I didn’t study and I guessed on many of the reading portion questions because I did not even realize how much time there was left huhu, so how do I know if I’m in a good spot or not for my grade and how can I predict scores too? Huhu I ask too much.

    • @IrisPeng
      @IrisPeng 5 лет назад +2

      There should be percentiles but they might be skewed because juniors also took it. However, you’ll have to do extra studying if you want to be a national merit semifinalist because you’ll need to boost your score ~300 points. Most people I know can only boost their score max 150 points in one year... For myself, I got a 1470 sophomore year (no studying) and only a 1490 junior year (hardly studying) which is not a large increase, but most people I know who got semifinalist had scores around 1420-1480 the first time they took it as a sophomore

    I got a 990 on my SAT~ hehe my GPA was a 4.0. So after graduating high school I went to a community college and I graduate this semester. 🎉(I saved a lot of money by starting at a small college.) But graduating with my associates is not the end! I applied to three big four year universities ( Tarleton state Uni, Baylor Uni, and UMHB) I was ACCEPTED by all 3 of the Universities. One of which was my Dream UNIVERSITY and I will be attending it in the fall semester 2019. It just goes to show that hard work goes a long way. I honestly wasn’t motivated the entire time I was at a community college. In high school people look down on community colleges but my experience was amazing and so much fun. At first I was a bit ashamed because I thought that I could do better than a community college but I needed this experience to prepare for a bigger Uni. A four year Uni would have kicked my senior graduate butt! Good luck everyone taking the SAT and don’t worry if your plans changed because not everyone walks the same paths~💜
