      I second that. These videos are gems, and have been for a long time. The visuals are stunning, editing as well, and the amount of information and insight Ryan provides is amazing. Super enjoyable to watch. It is easy to overlook how much work it obviously takes to do what he does and we should remind ourselfs of it, as you just did.

      This video is amazing, thank you. It’s so great to see Aviation being taught in y9! Some years ago, Flight was an optional module in Science and I taught it after having previously trained as a glider pilot. All my students got one question wrong on the external exam. It was simple Q about how to make a plane turn left. My students were correct, but the answers had not been written by aviators. Hope the exam boards have learned by now. Wish you and your students well!

    As a commercial pilot flying choppers in Malaysia, it doesn’t matter if passengers have an international flight same/ next day! It only matters if we operate safely. I’d rather lose a flight and some money, than my health/ life…

    • @phuketexplorer
      @phuketexplorer 11 месяцев назад +4

      My thoughts exactly! He shouldn't have flown until he had a clear path to his destination. Thank god mainstream commercial pilots don't make decisions like this.

    • @arctain1
      @arctain1 11 месяцев назад

      @@phuketexplorer - - He had a plan. And he had three backup plans. This is more than what ‘mainstream’ pilots plan for (who are required to file a single alternate, and reserve fuel) and only if the primary airport is forecast to be far below minimums.
      What he did was IFR plan for the primary airport, and an alternate IFR airport, and another IFR airport, and then, if all of those failed, he had a VFR airport planned - all within his planned IFR Fuel Reserve. He landed at his backup IFR/VFR airport. This is highly, highly competent Single Pilot Cockpit Resource Management (CRM). To do all this, in the bush, safely and competently, is a testament to his skill as a pilot, the awesome platform that is the Quest Kodiak, and his calling as a missionary.
      Rather than put his safety, and the safety of the airplane, in jeopardy, he executed a landing at an alternate. If he were to wait until the ‘path was clear’, very few flying services would take place here, as high mountains and low clouds trapped in the mountains are the norm.

      Get-There-Itis
      Not sure why he gets so much praise. Did it work because out because it was safe or was it lucky? Luck will not always be on your side.

    • @arctain1
      @arctain1 11 месяцев назад +7

      @brandonfoss8540 - because it's not get-there-itis. It's "Hey, these guys are depending on me, and if I can make it happen, I will".
      To me, it seems he had a great primary plan, a backup (which he executed), another backup, and then a VFR flight backup - all within his conservative fuel reserves. That would be the antithesis of "get-there-itis" and had zero to due to luck.

Your calm and methodical decision making using all the resources you can access, your flight planning, situational awareness, local knowledge and precise flying in an environment as challenging and unforgiving of errors as PNG sets a great example of how to do it well. Watching you has helped to make me a better pilot.

    Not boring at all, it's actually more intense flying almost basically 'blind' and not knowing if you'll be able to land, and then having to not know if you can even land at a contingency airstrip.
    Also - Ryan simultaneously making intense time/fuel/weather/landing calculations - "Ooo look at the cool waterfall over there!" 😂 😂😂

    By FAR the most fun video of this channels till date (to me at least). Definitely takes me back with my dad in 1992 delivering supplies to remote Brazilian Army locations deep in the Amazon forest, in his Cesna Caravan. Weather was always cloud heavy, and unpredictable, but super fun flights due to that. Me & brothers had THE best childhood ever.

    I wish I could give two thumbs up or even ten! Not boring at all!! This is exactly the kind of decision making and focus that safe pilots need to see.
    I was saying to myself out loud, “don’t go today, don’t go!” and then next thing I watch is you the next day saying you’d delayed a day. Then on pins & needles and loved how you planned / programmed the good weather coastal airport in ahead of time, skipping the idea of even thinking about returning to Goroka on that day. Nice!

    It’s not boring outside; reminds me of the days I was trucking around at those levels in our 182 - IFR in and between layers, sometimes on top, donning the sunglasses and admiring the speed at which we were coasting along the clouds before plunging in there again, hand-flying most of the time. Oh the good days… Memories to last for the remaining - God willing - twenty years or so of a lifetime.

    I love the waterfall one arrival to the dirt grass 4 approach to a cat 3 or LPV with special stol kit as thing flys so crazy slow I love it.. you had like 2.6 miles of runway left that was awesome you could have gotten current with 3 up and downs and still came to full stop ! So there’s always an approach you just need to build one in the box

    Che spettacolo, mi piace volare e vedere volare, ma quello che fai è sbalorditivo. Sei un grande pilota. (from Italy, neighbor Albenga, LIMG)

    Oh wow. You really can see from these videos just how vital you guys are in a place like that. Mountain, jungle, rivers... There was one MAF plane in the African country I was an MK, but there were road links between the villages, so it's a lot easier to get between places by land. PNG... no chance. And that weather looked absolutely horrible for being able to do anything in - hope you made it to where you wanted to go, I guess we'll find out when that video goes up!

    I’m always amazed at your constant high workload, even without filming yourself. At least making the videos helps you to hear your own logic. I hope it helps your decision making!

    Now that's what I call an unforgiving approach! Rigorous planning or trust in luck that won't always be there. Really fine job of piloting.
