Congratulations on your Iron Man race! I have my first ever triathlon on Saturday. Its only a sprint distance but 2 yrs ago at this time i was 310+ pounds and would never be able to do this. Today I am at 195 pounds and feeling really good! I still have a ways to go but its been a Life changer! I appreciate you videos, i discovered you as i have been watching more and more triathlon and running channels.

Chris is the man! I taken on a bunch of Chris’ advice and jumped out of my comfort zone and I’m preparing for my first marathon. I’ve even created a RUclips channel to follow my progress. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing your progress. Cheers, John.

5:07 is a good time on a course that is tougher than it looks on the maps. I was surprised: you beat me by a minute at Newport where you had bike issues, but I got you by 12 minutes at IWells. So I thought you must have had something go really wrong. Things I noticed and comparisons: I had Pop Tarts AFTER the race ;). The swim was a bit long. I wore the booties. If the decision is close, it’s worth it to wear them just to save your feet from freezing while standing on the sand for 30 minutes. You’re losing heat energy every second. And at the 2nd 1/2 of the run, you need every joule of energy you can get. Wearing a wetsuit does get your shoulder muscles; wearing a sleeved trisuit underneath only compounds the tension that they must overcome each stroke. I went sleeveless trisuit with body glide on all of my upper body that would contact the wetsuit to reduce that tension so it’s easier to swing your arms. People seeded themselves horribly; I passed way too many people. It really slows the whole course when people do that. The bike is fast yet slow with all the (u-) turns. So there were lots of times to get out of aero and stretch. The undulating run course can sap your strength if you push it too hard on the early uphills. Conversely, really have to lengthen your stride on the downhills to take advantage of gravity. I had 4 gels during the run, first one right off the bat; the other 3 within an hour and a 1/2. Didn’t slow down until that last big climb. And that’s just muscle fatigue, not bonking. Ran my fastest half marathon ever-including stand-alone runs. I think experience really helped on all three disciplines.

Amazing how fast you run for any size person
But add in the fact how much muscle you carry it’s even more impressive
    Congrats!

    Well done my friend:-)
I’m hoping to go sub 5hrs in 2020.
Keep up the hard work with the channel and sign up for a full Ironman next year, it looks like there’s some great events you’re side of the pond.
