I just want to say that.. You're amazing. Your video answered all of the questions that I had. And I even got questions answered that I never even had! c:
Fantastic review man. Appreciate the added breakdown of how the board can be used to record on the fly with FL Studio. I've been shopping for a midi keyboard that I can use to simultaneously learn to play the piano and music production. Not ideal for actually learning an instrument I know, but cost-effective. Anyways, I'm torn between the Alesis VI61 (basically this keyboard) and an Akai Professional MPK261. I saw your review on the MPK mini and was wondering, how do you think the functionality, quality, and feel of your MPK mini compare with this Alesis VI49?
Thank you bro! And I also have this Alesis vi149 and FL studio. Now I can use these two more fruitfully i guess. but you should start the tutorials of FL studio as well. You are really good at it.
Like - I read an Amazon review that says setting this up with FL studio was a nightmare, you made it seem like a dream. Probably going to purchase this thanks to you. Currently using the AKAI MPK mini and I just found that I wish I had an extra octave up/down while playing without having to switch it manually.
I have been using FlStudio for maybe 7-8 years now and I had no idea I could do half of these things. Very informative. I would still like to see the buttons he used as arpeggio controllers.
Hello great tutorial only one thing that dosent seem to work for me and that is to be able to use drum pad and piano keys at same time like either it both acts like drums or both as piano what is it that ive missed?? Im using the free trial atm thank alot
Any plans on making future tutorials on how to reassign the drum pads and record transports for example? The manual is maddeningly unhelpful and confusing and I can't find anything around here.
I'm trying to decide which midi controller and software to use. I understand that different controllers can come packaged with different softwares; are they generally sufficient? Currently, I'm looking into the Arturia Minilab, and the Alesis V25/VI25.
Hey! I'm probably late to the party but hopefully you'll reply!! So i want to Start learning piano and get into music production at the same time, and what i have in mind is the Alesis Vi61 since it has 61 keys, would you suggest this 49 one is enough or should i get the 61?? Thanks in advance
Hey man. I have the same controller and it’s pretty much collecting dust because I couldn’t figure out how to configure the keybed to the conventional layout with ascending keys left to right. Mine is split with a few silent keys in the middle, the high register on the bottom left of the silent keys and the low register on the upper right. Very inconvenient if you learnt to play on a conventional keyboard. Any ideas on how to set that preset? I’ve tried to use the editor and play around with some settings to no luck.
Totally unrelated, but your background song sounds a lot like another rock-like song that I know of that has that same saxophone melody. @13:03 does anyone else know of the song by chance?

My Keyboard always takes the drumpads as regular Keyboard keys.. my software (Magix music maker) doesn't realize them as drum pads, they just play regular notes. Any idea why?
I get that this keyboard controller is oriented towards PC recording but I hate PC recording and the crappy sounds they have with them. I want to use mine for controlling three external synths and there doesn't appear to be much info for setting up to do this. It's frustrating and I sold mine as a result of this and bought a keystep.
Because you're using a generic profile, if your controller isn't listed in FL Studio, it's not going to utilize all the keys on it's own. You'd have to map it, and since you can't map octave in FL Studio itself, it can't be mapped. You can try MIDI Out if your controller has that port.
appreciate the vid! would you happen to know how to set up a preset for FL Stuido? i can play keys and pads and link fx to controllers but my 'play, stop, record' buttons arent working...
I love the young people now that I'm an old fart. They were weaned on digital tech so to them its almost as simple as flushing the toilet, both of which they learned to do at about the same time. Tech is a lot more constructive of course. Thanks dude. I'm thinking about getting one of these controllers. I had to go to school to learn this kind of stuff and it still messes with my head most of the time. Trying to make tech things work always makes me feel like a stupid rat in a complicated maze. Its a good thing I like challenges. Otherwise I'd be doomed.
Hahaha thanks so much man, I really appreciate that! Yeah honestly I love things nowadays, with the internet available to us, we have the potential to learn so many things on our own with some hard work :D
I just _really_ wish that the Alesis Vi49 VI Editor actually worked.. The one thing which keeps me from returning the keyboard to Amazon and buying another one is that _literally everything else works fine and as expected_ when I use the keyboard with CSound, FLstudio, Ableton Live and MIDI-OX in Windows. Alesis VI Editor keeps giving me an error message asking me to ensure that no other programs are using MIDI ports.. Like does it want me to uninstall ALL of my music software simply to use that specific piece of software or what? My next step, if I cannot figure out how to re-map the controls via the company's own software, is to contact their customer support, and if they cannot give me a working editor software.. I suppose I will need to tackle the (seemingly incredibly steep) learning curve of using MIDI-OX and learning how to create the Map files needed to perform the same tasks, just with manual conversions of Hex -> Decimal and cross-referencing manuals and such every single step of the way. I suppose you really do pay for what you get though. I'm not ready to drop $2000 on an actual Synth Keyboard from Yamaha or Casio to use as a MIDI controller when I'm literally picking up an instrument for the first time as an adult in my mid 30s, since I was literally a little kid when I learned to play a bit of piano and guitar but never truly got into it.
I will tell you all right now, this controller works better with Ableton in every way. It's almost useless in FL Studio, most of the function keys do not work in it, which involves scripting the midi parameters (stupid that users have to do this.) Every button automaticaly works in Ableton, which sucks because I don't like Ableton compared to FL Studio, but it's ridiculous how well this controller works with Ableton than FL Studio. You can't even map the play button with this, which is such a cluster fuck. As for this video, no offense to you, but it doesn't need to be this long. You can plug in any midi controller into FL Studio and use a generic profile, but that's exactly the problem with FL is that it only has a few profiles for actual controllers, and generic controller profile just doesn't cut it if you're really trying to do things. Yeah, you can assign knobs and what not, but you can't assign main functions like play, record and stop, which means you spend more time between your typing keyboard and mouse rather than on the controller itself.
@@Professoar Thank you man, I wasn't trying to insult you about "vid2long", more like the actual process of plugging in any midi controller to FL is quite short in the sense that FL doesn't try to do much in terms of actually finding out what your keys does; hence the scripting bullshit.
