    CC equals Continuous Controller... and/or Control Code. A rotary volume knob... or fader... generally sends a Continuously Variable value.
    So you tell the transmitter you want it to be a CC... Continuous Controller, and then.., you tell it which Control Code to send. CC7 is usually volume. CC1 is usually Mod Wheel.
    Some devices FORCE you to use the standard, but other times you get to choose, and once in a while, a device will force you to use NON-standard settings.
    Basically.., if both sending and recieving devuces agree, all is well. If not, not.
    The Mod Wheel... very often... sends CC2 data. MOST synths, EXPECT Mod Wheel data set up as CC2. Many keyboards WON'T LET YOU re-assign Mod Wheel data, it will ALWAYS send CC2.
    The synth will LISTEN for CC2 data, and THIS synth patch will CHANGE SOMETHING when it hears it. Very often.... Vibrato. Sometimes.., filter resonance.
    Sometimes, you get total control. YOU get to choose which CC# the Mod Wheel sends out. YOU get to choose which CC# the synth patch "listens for"... for Mod Wheel type data.
    And YOU get to choose what the synth patch changes when Mod Wheel data comes in.
    But not always. You need to know how your sender...( Controller Keyboard) AND how your receiver... (THIS synth... MAYBE this synth PATCH TOO)... are designed and implemented.
    And YOU get to choose

      Greetings Jeff! This is some wonderful information for anyone interested in MIDI controllers. I share the little I know and learn so much from comments like yours. Thank you for your comment, cheers.

      @@cipstechitips1574 you're welcome. I didn't invent any of this, I learned it from someone who took the time to explain for me, and return the favor for others.
      Other issues you raise...
      The Program Change option for buttons. Here, a button could be used to switch your synth, hardware or software, from whatever it's playing now, to a piano patch. Or violin.
      Like the rest of MIDI, many devices respond similarly, but some just do their own thing.
      One major variable here. My DX-7 stores 32 sounds onboard. If I send a patch change to it, say... "play patch 32"... that's what will happen.
      But my Casio VZ-10m has 64 sounds onboard, 8 banks, of 8 sounds each. To get the sound I want, I'd need to specify both bank, and patch number, where-as the DX-7 only needs the patch number.
      How this is done, varies from synth to synth.
      One synth might define the first bank as Bank 0, while another might call its first bank Bank 1.
      You can usually find this info in a device's "MIDI Implementation" documentation.
      Also, MS Wavetable is a software synthesizer that comes with Windows. It follows the General MIDI specification, where Patch 1 is always a Piano, etc
      The GM spec was set up so that 5 or 20 different synths would all be able to play a MIDI file using similar instruments. The pianos on all five might sound different, but... if Track One in the MIDI file is set to play GM Patch 1... they will ALL be pianos.
      IF... the synth has GM mode, AND IF GM mode is turned on, during playback.
      MS Wavetable is a set of sounds. If you're used to the OP1 synth on an old Soundblaster card, the MS Wavetable sounds might be an improvement.
      If you're using a Korg 05/Rw hardware synth, the MS Wavetable,sounds might be a step down in quality.
      Of course, THIS song... might sound better with a lesser instrument. Any maybe not.
      Try it!
      :-)

      Do we need a audio interface?

    • @cipstechitips1574
      @cipstechitips1574  4 года назад +1

      The MIDI does not. It only needs a USB connector cable to a PC/Mac with Digital Audio Workstation software. I is explained in the videos.

    • @jefft4303
      @jefft4303 4 года назад +2

      @@정상수-v7c The Alesis acts much like a computer's mouse or keyboard. It turns your input, into computer commands.
      In this case, you would generally be sending input to a software, or hardware synth.
      With a hardware synth, you would hear the result as normal, tbru amplified speakers, headphones, a PA system, etc.
      With a software synthesizer, you would need a way to hear the computer's audio output.
      The standard earphone jack WILL work, but...
      The computer takes time to calculate the synthesizer's output. Computers perform repetitive tasks very quickly, but some synth software is modelled very deep and complex.
      At this point, there can be long lags between the time you press a key on the Akesis controller, and the time you hear the sound begin.
      Delays that are so long as to ruin any chance of rhythmic music are possible.
      Here, you need to streamline the computer processing.
      One way to do this is using an audio interface which uses ASIO drivers.
      Whether or not YOU need an audio interface with ASIO drivers depends on many things... your computer's speed, and configuration, the complexity of the synth software, your own sensitivity to this kind of delay, and whether or not you need to monitor in near realtime or not.

    So far, I haven´t adjusted anything - nor looked at this setup, but your tutorial makes a good case for doing so. I had no idea one could use pads and keys indipendently! The drum pads are really too sensitive in standard settings, and I am a beginner finger drummer (yes, that is a real thing). This sensitivity may or may not be a weakness with the V-49, but with the stock settings I strike unintentional double hits.

    Hi Cip. In answer to your questions...
    1. Microsoft GS Wavetable is a software synthesizer, built into the Windows OS. It conforms to the General MIDI Standard, giving you basically an orchestra worth of different sounds. General Midi means that each sound is assigned a standard patch number. On all GM instruments, patch number will be a piano, so any composition written for a GM synth should play more or less the same on any GM synth.
    2. Midi Input 2 and Output 2 on the V-49 allow you to control 16 MIDI channels on a second MIDI port. So you can use the keys to control one synth, and the pads for another, basically giving you 32 "inputs" and 32 different " outputs".
    3. CC refers to Continuous Controller. While a switch is either On or Off, the knobs and wheels give out a range of values, or "continuous" messages.
    4. The mod wheel (and pitch wheel) is a frequently used CC. Mod wheel usually turns on and off (and more and less) Modulation, either vibrato or tremolo, but can be assigned to other synth parameters, at the risk of possible... weirdness. To work properly, the Mod wheel needs to be setup properly, and the synth patch needs to have variable values mapped to incoming CC messages from the Mod wheel. Not all synth patches are set up to respind to Mod Wheel input. Same with pitch wheel. Consider... a guitar sounds natural when you "bend" a note. Pitch wheel. It sounds natural when you wiggle a finger on a fret. Vibrato, from the Mod wheel. Neither sound right on a piano, do often, they aren't assigned.

    • @jefft4303
      @jefft4303 6 лет назад

      5. A Program Change tells your hardware or software synth to switch to a different patch. For instance, it might say "Quit playing a guitar sound, and change to a piano sound."

    • @jefft4303
      @jefft4303 6 лет назад +1

      6. Transpose moves the keys around in pitch, less than the octave control. Octave shifts the keys 12 semitones, up or down, one full octave. Transpose moves the keys X notes, from one semitine, to 12... "coarse control" and "fine control."

    The modulation wheel is basically the level of wah or fluctuation of an instrument i believe this is also known as vibrato on traditional instruments.

    • @cipstechitips1574
      @cipstechitips1574  5 лет назад

      Howdy Gabriel! Latency is very common in digital equipment. The signal need to be translated from data to sound. Depending on your computer and settings it may be very noticeable.
      In Ableton, if you go to -Options, -Preferences, -Audio tab, -Driver. I use MME/DirectX. It works fine on my PC. If you use ASIO Low latency driver you will need to try different settings to determine what is optimal for you. Usually, a smaller buffer size and a lower sampling rate reduces latency, but affect quality. Driver Error Compensation helps align timing of recorded tracks. Check RUclips for better info.
      Thank you for your question. Cheers

    Can't really say that I recomend buying this midi keyboard. Owned it for a year and a half and two of the keys decided that they didn't want to work.
    I ordered a 49 key not a 25 key. Shouldn't have to constrict myself one octaive up for something that takes up the whole space of my desk.

    Just want to ask about the feel of the keys on the MIDI-controler?

    • @cipstechitips1574
      @cipstechitips1574  6 лет назад

      Greetings! Overall I like the Alesis V49. I am a beginner, I like the feel of the key. They very much like actual piano keys in size and touch. The response is controlled by a setting called "curve". I set mine to #8 which is only off or full volume on. The other curves 1-7 are responsive to velocity, how quick and how hard you press the keys. This is totally a personal preference.
      I do not like the drum pads. They often "multi-fire". They make a drum sound more than once per hit.
      This is only my opinion. Maybe a professional can get better performance. Cheers...Cip M.

    • @cipstechitips1574
      @cipstechitips1574  2 года назад +1

      Greeting Keith! It is easy to get lost in the procedure. What you are trying to do is: In the Alesis Editor is assign the Key bed to one channel (1) and the Pads to a different channel drums (10). Then in the DAW: setup a piano on channel (1) and drums on channel (10). The Daw needs to listen to not "All Ins" but a "Alesis..." and not "All channels" but specifically "Ch. 1 and 10" respectively. Give it another go, cheers.

      Greeting! In the video go to 7:10 - Drum Pads. You must set each individual drum pad channel. You must send the new settings to the MIDI. You can also save a copy to your local drive. All setting are saved not just the drum pads. Give that a try, cheers.
