It's crazy cool to me that MIDI was made exactly 40 years ago and it stood the trial of time to this day. Dave Smith and Sequential had a huge impact on the modern music industry and I think many people don't realize, as they're not nearly as big as Korg or Yamaha. By the way you said MIDI was invented by Dave Smith Instruments - they were actually called Sequential back then and DSI is the name they had to take for the recent couple of years after they decided to reactivate their brand and they eventually reclaimed the rights to use the original name - Sequential. They were the first that allowed musical instruments to talk to each other in a modern way. They also revolutionized synthesizers, connecting the analog with digital and taking the best out of each domain. Dave passed away a year ago. Rest in peace Dave :(

Atari weren’t even the first to have midi on a computer.
Dave Smith and the president of Roland worked it out, and set it free on the world (first “open source”).

oh snap. ive have formally surpassed previous incarnations of geekdom, and have entered the midi twilight zone. i actually understood exactly how you chain everything, and even what equipment you are using. i dig the euro synths! im using all native instrument gear, with a couple token pieces of akai pro audio. to be fair and honest, i did learn to program general midi c back in the middle 90s when i was working as an Apple Multimedia developer. Ill also say that todays midi gear is so far beyond what we began with back in the day. general midi was , to paraphrase einstein, spooky from a distance, and we referred to the phenomena as voodoo, as we also used the term scsi voodoo. sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt, hence the name voodoo, and scsi voodoo. crap. i just dated my self. im old as dirt apparently, but kickin out some decent progressive trance, and post industrial groove porn, with a new album scheduled for release towards the end of the year. you my young friend, upon seeing what youre working with, appear to have a bright future, indeed. cheers.

What would you recommend for my current setup?
    Drum machine: _Behringer RD-9_
    Synths: _KORG Microkorg, KORG Minilogue_
DAWless is cool if I were to be performing live at an actual gig, but in my bedroom or living room, I would like to record my performance in DAW (Ableton Live).
I have an audio interface (Behringer UMC202HD) which I think should be enough, but i've also been considering getting a mixer (Mackie ProFX 12v3) to connect the gear to
Until then, should I just plug the Behringer RD-9 and one of the two synths into the preamps of the audio interface via mono TRS cables and record my performance in DAW? Or would that not work like that?
I'm so lost here, but this video makes sense. Just not sure how I'd apply it to my baby setup

Midi clock simply transmits simple start, stop, continue and song position commands. A clock "tick" is transmitted 96 times per beat (if I remember correctly).

Careful with the MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru it leaches power from the MIDI port of the device plugged to it's MIDI IN, so if you use it with some devices that also rely on the limited juice supplied over MIDI you'll get some bad behavior. Still it's a nice through box as it doesn't require a wall wart or battery ( just don't get exotic with running an Anatek MIDI Filter ahead of it's MIDI IN or a RetroKits RK-002 on it's MIDI OUTs.) Other MIDI Thru boxes with obligatory wall warts will provide power to their MIDI Out Ports without leaching. As a rule of thumb though if the Thru box is without external power it is leaching power from the MIDI device connected to its MIDI In port and shouldn't be used with any other non-powered MIDI devices. But all that is way more depth than a starter overview should have to cover. Why not use the MIDI Ins on the Volcas? They have an annoying feature that they always receive Start/Stop (MIDI Real Time) messages from the "Brain". Of course if you have a MIDI Filter you can filter out the offending MIDI messages while still allowing MIDI Clock to sync the Volcas, or just use the Clock In ports... but then you lose the ability to trigger the Volcas externally with the sequencer "Brain" which depending on your situation might be more useful than the internal sequencer (ie. Swing on a Volca Bass, Beats, or Keys since it's built in sequencer is missing that feature.) MIDI Outs from things with Keys will send notes and CC# Messages generated internally as well as Clock... where as MIDI Thrus will only pass the exact messages they receive on their MIDI IN unaltered and immediately (except in the case of the Quadra Thru which first leaches a small amount of voltage and then passes the MIDI Messages (minus some small amount of voltage.)

A little fast for me being a beginner. Please direct me! I have a Presonus audiobox usb96, Novation mininova, Arturia Beatstep, Arturia MKII MINILAB, and a Behringer rd6 rythm machine. these all connect into a dell optiplex 3020. I've had to unplug the minilab just to get Reaper to work properly. Please help me configure everything so it all works together.
