Totally agree! This just doesn’t get talked about enough. DIY electrical work should not be allowed at all! The amount of times I’ve heard “oh I can get a board from screwfix for £50 I’ll do it myself” . No training no experience no registration no standards and nobody to say you can’t do that!

That’s why I would prefer a training system for DIYers as rigorous as for trained electricians and a qualification system that allows you to work on your home but not as a trade, but then have inspections to finalize approval. We have inspections in the USA to approve any work like this whether a diyer or licensed professional electrician. The problem is not just training and licensing but quality of work that matters. Only inspections will lead to tangible improvements in time In the industry and that goes for other trades as well.
The problem he is I think highlighting is not the DIYers but professional licensed electricians who cut corners and do a poor job ignoring a lot of their own training just to fit as many jobs in.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views. I know there are many other electricians that will side with you completely. I believe the key is in educating the public. Electricians who work with electricity all day everyday use test equipment to prove that they have done their job correctly, the public don’t understand that there’s more to it than plugging something in and seeing that it works.

I am glad you highlighted the importance of high quality work. Let’s hope there is an up skilling of the Industry at the very least homeowners can see from social media what good quality work looks like and younger sparkies are being influenced by good sparkies. Regulation can only take you so far and their should be much more regular inspection of electrical work by inspectors an added cost but that’s the only way to improve this aspect.

Math Man, thanks for taking the time to share your comment. Everything should be about the standard. Get that right and the prices will start to rectify themselves. When a client can’t see the difference in value between contractors then it’s no wonder that they go with the cheaper quotations. That being said, I’m not the cheapest electrician in my area and I make no secret of it, I’m approaching ten years in business and people continue to use my services.
I hope you’ll subscribe to my channel and keep an eye out for future videos. I look forward to hearing your views on them.
      Kind regards

@@JPSElectricalServicesBristol already subscribed when I used to live in London about 15 years ago. I found it very frustrating finding high quality sparks even though they were licensed and registered. I can remember one time getting four different pros in who were licensed and registered with the relevant trade organizations to fault finding an RCD trip. None of them had the patience to find the problem it ended up me having to locate it using basic common sense. I resolved it. I moved to the USA after that and here homeowners are allowed to do their work but have to have it fully inspected from first fix to second fix. I took it on myself to learn the trade in my own time and have test equipment and understand the code fully in fact anything I install I complete safety and installation reports think of a very comprehensive EICR and safety installation device testing and power quality analysis. In fact the local inspectors have been so impressed they are sharing that documentation with master electricians to show what good quality work is. In my own home I can go the extra mile I appreciate that professional contractors and firms have to work more rapidly but that should never be at the expense of quality of install and safety. At best you have to come back to do the job properly or at worst as you suggest you leave the install in a dangerous situation. Kudos to you for calling this.

I’ve just found your channel and I found your videos really interesting.
I have a couple questions is it possible you could reply because I’m not sure if it’s something to worry about.
Question 1: My electric socket stopped working and had a smoking smell. I think it was too much power being used at the time because there were 3 TVs, 3 Xbox’s, and a gaming pc being used when it happened.
Question 2: My lights have been flickering for a while now and I dont know why. They randomly start flickering (mostly on the main floor) and don’t stop until it annoys me enough where I turn off the lights. I don’t know why this is happening but I thought you might know a possible cause.

I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Please contact your local electrician and ask for them to make a visit to conduct an appointment inspection and diagnose the issues. It could be something as simple as a loose connection but these can cause electrical fires if left unattended to.
      Kind regards
      Steve :)

Well done Steve, too many right fisted landlords, letting agents and builders driving rates down. Don't get me started on joiners and kitchen fitters getting Sparks to 3rd party sign off shoddy work
