Finally found a video that explains how to change a bathroom down light(2.20). Thank you so much, really clear instructions and then made it really easy to change the bulb.
Thanks Steve. We have the low voltage ‘pin’ type in our kitchen. They are so temperamental. I think the transformers are ok as when I wiggle them the light does work. Very informative video on how to replace MR-16 type bulbs in recessed Downlight fixtures. When replacing a halogen bulb with an LED version to be used with a dimmer, you might have problems with LED MR-16 low-voltage bulbs flickering at low light levels. This is usually resolved by replacing lamp transformer with one rated from 0 volts to a higher voltage since the overall load on the transformer is considerably lower with LEDs. Older transformers require a minimum load around 50 or more watts which is why an LED bulb will flicker at low light levels.

I'll mention here in the comments that some you need to replace the whole fitting rather than the bulb. I spent the best part of an hour including watching this video to figure out how to take the bulb out of my bathroom light. Went to the manufacturer website and it turns out you can't. You replace the whole light fitting!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I have had a few people contact me to explain that they cannot see how to remove the lamp. On some newer LED units the lamp is integrated into the unit so it is not removable. Where possible, I try to avoid installing this type of unit. LED isn't quite what they made out it would be and there are many units failing. With this in mind, it's so much easier to install units with replaceable lamps. Thank you for your feedback. I'm pleased that you resolved your issue. Kind regards Steve :)
Hi. Many thanks for the video. I have an old spotlight , brand called Click. When I take it out of the ceiling the front plate just doesn’t come out like yours in the video. It remains stuck. Any ideas? Many thanks !

Hi great video, are the light fitting shown in the video considered enclosed. Only I’ve just bought some LED lamps that say do not use in the enclosed light fitting. I have light fitting that resemble the ones in the video fire rated which are vented round the top , it doesn’t say if they are or not an enclosed fitting . Any information would be appreciated Thanks .
Hi John, Thank you for taking the time to comment on my video. Could you possibly send me a photo of the exact wording and a photo of the markings on the side of the unit please. steve@jpselectricalservices.co.uk Kind regards Steve
Thanks for the video. I still can't seem to change the bulb. I've got those spring clips holding the fitting in the wall. I partially yanked it out put I can't seem to open the thing to remove the bulb.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Some of the newer versions of a recessed downlight are now integrated units. This means that the lights inside are not replaceable. If you go through to my website and complete the contact form, you can email me a photo and I’ll be able to assist you further. Kind regards Steve www.jpselectricalservices.co.uk
Hi Steve, Thank you for the video, very useful. I've got several of the version you talked through at 2:30. Some are impossible to twist anti-clockwise others are fine. Do you have any tips to unscrew the difficult lids? I think it's something to do with the rubber ring? Thank you, David.
Hi David, Thank you for commenting and apologies for the delay in my reply. If the lights have had Halogen lamps installed then I have seen in a few situations where the units have become so hot that they have warped. Are these particular lights installed within a bathroom?
@@JPSElectricalServicesBristol I have exactly the same situation. In the bathroom, with the rubber seal, and no movement at all when trying to twist anti-clockwise
Yes, a very useful video, Thank You. I also have fittings similar to those at 2:30. They differ slightly, the GU10 lamp does not drop down, so have to turn the lamp anticlockwise while in position...which is fiddly; but works OK.
If there are other lights still working and you can see that they have gone off when the switch is operated then you can proceed with changing the bulb. If in doubt, turn the power off at the fuse box. Kind regards Steve 🙂👍🏼
Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. You are correct. Since creating this video, integrated downlights have become a very common application. Personally, wherever possible, I try to avoid using them. LED lighting still isn’t as great as some manufacturers make out. This becomes an issue when an integrated lamp fails because the homeowner isn’t usually able to replace the entire unit because it’s connected to the electrical cables. A lamp however, can be easily replaced by most… when they know how 🥰👍🏼 Kind regards Steve :)
Hi Steve, yes, i found it useful, BUT, ours are a different make, and the bulbs don`t seem to want to come out. We have "ENLITE EN-BZE8" which has a "bayonette" type bezel, which comes off easily, but i can`t work out how the actual bulb comes out?. Also, do you know if these are the mains power, or low voltage variants?. We have 4 in our bathroom, and one has started intermitent flashing on and off, could it be a transformer type, and the transformer is faulty?.
Wish I would have watched this before trying; got caught by one of those snapping clips and nearly lost a finger haha. Thanks for the clear video. It gave me the confidence to open up the case and do the replacement after my finger bent back into place.
William thanks for taking the time to post your question. There are a number different factors that need to be taken into consideration before selecting a cable. If you are unsure then please get in touch with your local electrician and they will be happy to advise you of how best to proceed. I’m sure you understand that is impossible to advise you in this situation due to not knowing the installation and the external influences etc. Kind regards Steve :)
Thanks for video. I have. JCC1001 ceiling kitchen light which has failed: do I have to replace the entire unit as I cannot see how to change the bulb, Many thanks pete Berry Gloucester
Excellent video thanks. Went to replace our bulb which has one of the screw release fittings but the screw won’t turn (don’t know if it was cross threaded or seized up??). Any advice how to tackle this? Thanks 👍
Stephen Humphreys, thank you for taking the time to comment. There is a possibility that the thread is aluminium and could have stripped due to being over tightened. If it’s just a seized thread and a halogen light bulb is being used then you could turn the power off, remove the unit from the ceiling completely and then after turning the power back on ,run the light up to temperature. Turn the power off again and using something that will protect your hands from the heat try unscrewing the thread again. The heat from the halogen light bulb could be enough to make the unit expand and allow the thread to turn. If this does not work then you may need to cut your losses and source a replacement. Please let me know how you get on. Kind regards Steve :)
All very well sat at a table and you can grip the holder, what do you do when the holder is stuck in the recess so you can't grip and twist? We've tried a sucker to grip the bulb as we push it but the holder just twists with it.
I have the type for the bathroom with the rubber seal where you need to twist anti-clokwise. I have twisted and twisted it and all it does is turn but never release - is there something else I can try?
Any suggestions on getting the can out of the ceiling? Those pesky springs are TOO fierce. Also found the 2-pin low voltage cable fails at the back of the socket. Poor design?
Dunelm Video thanks for taking the time to comment. Those clips are savage aren’t they! The plan should be to tilt the light and bring one spring clip out first and then the other one. Take your time and once the spring clip becomes visible, hold it back so that it cannot spring shut. With regards to the lamp holders, they can fail due to excessive use with halogen lamps. Pop to your local TLC Wholesaler and ask for their upgrade version. I hope this helps, please let me know how you get on. Kind regards Steve :)
Hi Steve, Thanks for your Video, I think it's resolved something in my head in that one of our kitchen lights is not working possibly because the transformer has failed especially as when I swap it for another in the room the non working "bulb" works again so I'll look into sourcing one of these It's an Enlite EN-PL06B/30. Also (a very minor point) you are softly spoken and the bits that are spliced in afterwards are much louder. Oh, and although I knew what to expect, the spring mechanism still whacked me when I was taking one of them out!!!
Thank you for your positive feedback regarding the volume. This is something that I will look into. I’m sorry to hear that you managed to catch your fingers. It still happens to myself on occasions and it’s a painful reminder of my error each time! 🤣 It does sound very likely that you have a failed transformer. I think I may need to do a video in this alone. Kind regards Steve :)
How is a spotlight fit into ceiling changed that can't have the bulb removed once fixed into place, as looking to fix some in bathroom but can't find any that are ip65 and changeable easily. Afraid it will ruin the plasterboard ceiling if the light fails and the the whole spotlight needs to be removed in order to change the bulb itself.
Thank you for the heads-up. It seems that there are a number of viewers experiencing different issues with the volume. Some say they can't hear it, others say certain parts are too loud. I think it's likely platform or computer setting differences amongst users? I hope the video was useful. Kind regards Steve :)
I find when I replace some spots with an LED bulb, the spring clip won't go back into the groove without considerable force. They look identical so what can the problem be?
Hi Steve! Thank you for the helpful video. We have the EN-FD103204V lights in the bathrooms but they seem to give out such a little amount of light? The room is still so dark with them on - I’m not sure if this is the bulb or because the bulbs are quite recessed into the ceiling? Would you recommend changing the bulb or the whole fitting? Many Thanks!!
Thank you for making me smile. This comment alone has made it worth the effort creating the video. I'm so pleased that it was of use to you. Kind regards Steve :)
Hi, I’ve got a JC94174 in my en-suite. After a struggle getting it out with those clasps I can’t get the face fitting off to get to the bulb...any advice?? 🤦♂️
Hi dubjay1981. thank you for your question. Some newer units come as an integrated lamp. This means that the entire unit needs to be replaced. The light bulb is not accessible. Can you send me a photo of the light so that I can confirm if this is the case please. You can make contact through my website www.jpselectricalservices.co.uk Kind regards Steve :)
I've been trying to twist anti-clockwise above the shower one and it won't just open. Any tips mate? It's so frustrating, might end up calling an electrician.
Tanim Ahmad thanks for taking the time to comment. Some LED recessed downlights are a completely sealed unit and the lamp cannot be removed. Some can just be stubborn. Please feel free to use the contact form on my website and I’ll reply requesting a photo of the unit. From this I should be able to determine if it is replaceable or sealed. Kind regards Steve - www.jpselectricalservices.co.uk
Yes, can confirm those springs do bite. Puzzled about people saying LEDs save energy over halogen. My kitchen has 8 12V 50W halogens. 400W at 12V, does that not convert roughly to 20W at 230 volts? Eight LEDs at about 5W each is double what the halogens use, or have I got the maths wrong? Appreciate the LEDs run much cooler.
Plymouth Sparky Thanks 😁 I caught myself an absolute peach the other day. Just as well the Property was empty is all I’ll say. I found a stubborn unit, so more concentration went to trying not to damage the ceiling and then before I had time to consider my fingers it had popped out and caught the backs of my fingers on both hands 🤣👍🏼
Since creating this video and LED lights evolving, many recessed downlights have been manufactured in a way that integrates the unit and the lamp. This means that if the light fails, the whole unit needs to be replaced. I really do dislike these units but even I opt to install them on occasions where the installation dictates that particular design is the best option. I hope this helps. Kind regards Steve :)
Thanks for taking the time to get in touch. Please feel free to contact me through my website. The enquiry form allows you to attach photos. I’ll see if there is any advice that I can provide. Kind regards Steve :)

What if you can’t twist and there’s no metal ring? 😫😫I have the one that you can move the direction of bulb slightly, but there’s no way of actually removing the LED light...🥺
Thank you for taking the time to comment. If your fitting had an integrated LED installed then the entire unit will need to be replaced. It’s for this reason that I try to avoid installing integrated units. I hope this helps. Kind regards Steve :)
I need help:((( Spend half a day watching YT videos to understand how to change my bulb. In the end I had to cut it off the ceiling because it was painted over by the builders a few years ago. I managed to get it out but now I’m stuck as I can’t figure out how to take the bulb out of its casing (or whatever it’s called)😢😢😢.

@@JPSElectricalServicesBristol omg thank you so much!! Ive already done smth wrong.. I took out the whole fitting out of the ceiling🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ then didn’t know how to take the bulb out. Then someone told me to use a screwdriver do detach the piece which I didn’t know was detachable - and it was!! It’s hard to explain showing just a photo. I made a short video - will have to upload here, if you dont mind, would you have a look tomorrow? I’ll send a link once it’s uploaded. My question is - after I put the fitting back in, now there’s a visible gap between the ceiling and the fitting, is it ok to leave it like that? Or should I buy some sealant and cover it? And - when I touch it, it sounds scary, very loud creak or squeak. The second bulb should be easier to change since I already know how it works.. although I’m scared of electricity 😳😳😳 Thank you ever so much for replying and offering to upload a photo!
Good morning Steve, I have just uploaded the video, I made it as short as possible and sped up. I seem to have destroyed the integrity of the ceiling.. Do you think I should book a professional person to redo the job? I have to change another light and I’m scared to even touch it after this😳 ruclips.net/video/06hi7rCC8As/видео.html
For the spring clip type ruclips.net/video/4hWjCiJuauA/видео.html I've found you need to set the bulb in place inside the fitting then push the spring clip until it clicks into place then screw on the outer plate. If you haven't put the spring in place properly the plate will not srew onto the thread.

Hi. Many thanks for the video. I have an old spotlight , brand called Click. When I take it out of the ceiling the front plate just doesn’t come out like yours in the video. It remains stuck. Any ideas? Many thanks !
Thanks! Quick video, easy to understand, exactly what I needed for my bathroom lights
Thanks for the explanation ... the bathroom version in my home was causing some head scratching which you've solved.

Thank you ever so much - again it was the bathroom one that was causing heartache for me!
Thank you some much for posting this video. I found it extremely helpful.
Any information would be appreciated
Thanks .
Hi John, Thank you for taking the time to comment on my video. Could you possibly send me a photo of the exact wording and a photo of the markings on the side of the unit please.

Hi @lindarattray2462, Thank you for taking the time to comment. I'm so pleased that you found my video useful :)
Hi Steve,
Thank you for the video, very useful.
@@ShirazEsat Maybe they have been overtightened (locked by the compressed seal), or maybe some corrosion on the threaded parts?
Yes, a very useful video, Thank You. I also have fittings similar to those at 2:30. They differ slightly, the GU10 lamp does not drop down, so have to turn the lamp anticlockwise while in position...which is fiddly; but works OK.

Is it ok to change the bulb
Just by switching of the light or turn off power at the fuse box?
Thanks
If there are other lights still working and you can see that they have gone off when the switch is operated then you can proceed with changing the bulb. If in doubt, turn the power off at the fuse box.

Not sure if I'm right but certain types of downlight once light bulb goes the whole unit needs to be replaced. I have a Luceco ftype f600
A lamp however, can be easily replaced by most… when they know how 🥰👍🏼
Kind regards
Steve :)
Hello, why don't you use lamps with a gu10 socket? Could you explain the difference and which one do you consider more convenient?
Hi Steve,What diameter does the twin and earth cable have to be when fitting the latest Led downlights? Thanks.

Fantastic video and support from this company
Thanks! I just couldn't find any guidance for the over-shower lamps
I have one that has metal 'teeth' all around the edges of the gu10, and I can't seem to push, twist, turn or do anything with them - any ideas?
Thanks. This video helped me immediately. You are a true g👍

Kind regards
Steve :)
All very well sat at a table and you can grip the holder, what do you do when the holder is stuck in the recess so you can't grip and twist? We've tried a sucker to grip the bulb as we push it but the holder just twists with it.

Hi, I enjoyed the video, found it extremely helpful, great clip 💎, THANK YOU👍
I have the type for the bathroom with the rubber seal where you need to twist anti-clokwise.
Kind regards
Steve :)
Great video, incidentally. Heaved the can out without getting mouse-trapped!
Dunelm Video that’s fantastic news, well done ☺️👍🏼
It does sound very likely that you have a failed transformer. I think I may need to do a video in this alone.

How is a spotlight fit into ceiling changed that can't have the bulb removed once fixed into place, as looking to fix some in bathroom but can't find any that are ip65 and changeable easily. Afraid it will ruin the plasterboard ceiling if the light fails and the the whole spotlight needs to be removed in order to change the bulb itself.
music comes in really loud on the logo but thanks for the video
Thank you for the heads-up. It seems that there are a number of viewers experiencing different issues with the volume. Some say they can't hear it, others say certain parts are too loud. I think it's likely platform or computer setting differences amongst users?
I hope the video was useful.

Hi dubjay1981. thank you for your question.

Tanim Ahmad thanks for taking the time to comment.
Some LED recessed downlights are a completely sealed unit and the lamp cannot be removed. Some can just be stubborn.
Please feel free to use the contact form on my website and I’ll reply requesting a photo of the unit. From this I should be able to determine if it is replaceable or sealed.

good video. it would be nice if you could get your whole hand up their into the ceiling to grab the main body of the light when you twisted the bezel!

Thanks heaps for posting this, really great help
Yes, can confirm those springs do bite.
Puzzled about people saying LEDs save energy over halogen. My kitchen has 8 12V 50W halogens. 400W at 12V, does that not convert roughly to 20W at 230 volts? Eight LEDs at about 5W each is double what the halogens use, or have I got the maths wrong? Appreciate the LEDs run much cooler.
Very useful video, thankyou 👍
Cheers for this vid pal just helped me out big time 👍🏽

Thanks Steve for this how to. Many a black thumbnail from the spring backs😂
Plymouth Sparky Thanks 😁
I caught myself an absolute peach the other day. Just as well the Property was empty is all I’ll say. I found a stubborn unit, so more concentration went to trying not to damage the ceiling and then before I had time to consider my fingers it had popped out and caught the backs of my fingers on both hands 🤣👍🏼
Yep, me too.
I’m having trouble with mine it’s doesn’t come apart and entire thing is metal
Since creating this video and LED lights evolving, many recessed downlights have been manufactured in a way that integrates the unit and the lamp. This means that if the light fails, the whole unit needs to be replaced. I really do dislike these units but even I opt to install them on occasions where the installation dictates that particular design is the best option.
I hope this helps.

The second bulb should be easier to change since I already know how it works.. although I’m scared of electricity 😳😳😳
Thank you ever so much for replying and offering to upload a photo!

I have just uploaded the video, I made it as short as possible and sped up. I seem to have destroyed the integrity of the ceiling.. Do you think I should book a professional person to redo the job? I have to change another light and I’m scared to even touch it after this😳
