Russia with the Soviet Union, but Serbia without Yugoslavia. Either we count the states united in a federation together with any of its members, or we count them separately.
It is the same with the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia

It is very strange using statistics in this way: USA no. 1 - population 335 millions residents. Norway no.9 - population 5,5 millions residents.
The population size matters when it comes to finding genetic freaks who look like they were grown in a lab for a specific sport, but the main predictor of success here is wealth (of which Norway has plenty)
Because they dominate in the winter games due to their climatic advantages
They're not the only country with plenty of snow and ice so there is a little more to it than that. Of course, they have an advantage over hot countries.
@@dionf3858the USA is all tropical you mean, no border with Canada, no Rockies…..

Its impressing to see Cuba so high!!
Yep, Cuba, despite being neither rich nor having big population still make it to the top 20
They dominated in boxing.

Very impressive
It's great that you include the East West and Unified German medals in one nation It would be unfair for you to separate it, as well as not include the USSR medals in Russia
True but East and West Germany had more athletes in each discipline when competing as two countries......and the ones from the East were pumped up with Steroids.
@@lucybartley5063Western countries were and are also pumped on steroids and always use dropping
@@Imaxxd22Costa Rica , Portugal , Iceland, Serbia, Venezuela, Mexico not that great at sports
Exactly opposite happened, ussr medals were basically added to Russia in statistics here, Russia has only ~150 gold medals, 500+ listed here is only possible if you add Ussr to it.. which is total bs, at least they should be split and added to the countries based on which ssr they were from
Athletes who won those medals were not only fromRussia, but also from another countries (Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia…)
Its interessting that a sporty country like spain before the games in barcelona had a olympic medal statistic that was a catastrophe.

None of those on top in this list make the top per capita.Countries like NZ with only 5 mill regularly finish in the top 5 per capita 3rd i think at the last olympics theres hardly any snow or ice in NZ so not as good in the winter olympics.
Mainest reason of Jamaica being on rank 36 is because of Usain Bolt. As his name said, he's as fast and fierce as a Lightning Bolt

The Netherlands and Belgium are closely linked culturally, but are miles apart in terms of sports. 🇧🇪 165 and 🇳🇱 469 medals.

If we just sweep all of Europe together, or only the EU countries, we are clearly the most superior in sports internationally. Clearly wealth has a lot to do with this.
@ Nerd Cassette Hey!, You know what would make an amazing video? Make separate charts for the winter and then for the summer Olympics. Countries like Austria are so far up the chart mostly because winter games medals. It's not fair for Ethiopia to be in the same chart, YKWIM ?
Ok bro thanks 💙.
I will make it soon.
true, Australia would be a few spots higher on the summer games list, but near the bottom on the winter list.
I'm surprised the UK is there, but they have started so many sports🤔
The English spread their games around the world and love their own sports, like world football, rugby, cricket, Boxing, snooker, baseball, darts, hockey, horse racing, Greyhound racing,....ect😜
All the while being incompetent at all of them while being dominated by other nations.
Why to be surprised? They are one of the most dominant countries and the only country in the Olympics to have won atleast a gold medal in all the Olympics.
@avatharamveeraraghavan3001 I never knew that about the Gold medals👏 If they spent the same amount as other countries, they would be even better😜
As a proud Indian, let’s do toilet counts, I bet you my country would come first!
As a Canadian I’m ashamed and disgusted with our ranking. We are a 1st world and a G7 country making us one of the richest countries in the world yet all of the other G7 countries are much better.
Climate probably has a lot to do with it but it is strange since one of the legacies of Empire is interest in sport. Just look at Australia
Canada is the smallest of the G7 by far (least populous, not land size) yet is 13th in medal count overall. If anything they are overachieving with winter sports playing a big part.
Britain lived of the investment of money 10yrs prior the 2012 Olympics. This is why we did so well from 2008-2016. Funding is now declining, athletes are not being invested in and it shows. Money makes a difference.

Nothing very surprising but l would like to see an index of global sport achievement by population. The US does really compete internationally in their version of football and baseball and it’s only recently they have become internationally competitive in football. My guess for the greatest sports nation would be Australia since from a small population they are very competitive in international sports. It’s easier to think of ones where they are not strong like winter and equestrian sports and boxing. The UK and Germany are also very competitive in a very wide range of sports although Germany not so much in boxing, cricket and rugby and the UK in winter sports, handball and basketball. Greatest under achievers has to be India.
Australia is irrelevant in a backwater part of the world no one cares about but Australians.
Actually if you dig deeper, you can see that the Usa is Extremely strong in several certain sports (athletic, swimming, gymnastics, shooting, women football,...)
@@quangminh9873 Women’s football yes, golf, boxing, basketball and some other martial sports but most are ones which are underwritten by colleges. Australia is a much smaller country but it has a much more embedded (participatory not just watching) sports culture
@@quangminh9873USA also performs well in Speed Skating and Short track and Alpine Skiing.
Australia is actually pretty good at Equestrian, have medalled at most olympics for the last 2-3 decades.

But if population is taken into account those countries in front don't come anywhere

Independent ?
Probably medals from athletes that were allowed to compete but the land they are from was banned for some reason, therefore winning the medal for independent/neutral instead of their country. Like russian athletes that could prove they were involved in doping could compete while russia was officially banned for the nation wide doping campagne.

So which country has won the most medals relative to its population? I think ranking based solely on the number of medals, especially gold medals, seems somewhat flawed.

You guys really need to stop the per capita qualification .The USA has less people than India and China. And the USA beats both countries even with. combined Medal Total. Also there are only soo many events any country can win. So you have to dominate or at-least be competitive. To ultimately win.

Per capita (quality, not quantity), the Septics drop down the list a fair way.
Per capita doesn’t mean much. Especially when the USA in terms of population. Is smaller than China & India in total overall population. And the USA beats them both even with a combined medal total. either quality is there or not. Having more or less people, factors lower. Also some countries don’t participate in both Summer & Winter Olympics. If countries don’t show up? They don’t Medal. Hence the overall Medal Tally.

It should be Summer + Winter + Paralympics. They deserve their merit too. Some countries are great at Paralympics and I believe they deserve recognition for it.
Excellent mind! You make the world more beautiful.
Sorry I disagree, not because I deny the achievements of either winter or Paralympic’s but because of geographical and economic issues. Simply put it not possible to compete in the Winter Olympics if you don’t have …. Winter. For all intents and purposes all countries between on or near the Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer. Does not have any snow ( other than at extreme high altitudes) so it’s for all intents and purposes not possible for the majority of the worlds population to even consider playing a winter sport, no matter how talented they are. You might as well have a High Altitude Olympics ( nothing under 1500m ) or a Heat Olympics (where the temperature doesn’t go under 30 degrees Celsius with a UV index of 10+). The reason I would exclude Paralympic is the same reason I would exclude Women’s medals ( not because they are not competent sportspeople) but because for the VAST majority of the world there are NO facilities or funds for disabled or women’s athletes ( and that excludes cultural issues … go try and have a women beach volleyball team in Afghanistan and see what happens) … I live in a Third World Country in the Southern Hemisphere and I am an international level athlete ( I tried but did not qualify for Paris 2024). There is NO State funding whatsoever in my country for any Sports … you want to go to the Olympics sure go … pay for everything yourself from your tracksuit to your kit, to your flights , to your accommodation, training etc etc … I wasn’t the best in my country … I was just the best that could afford to go to the qualifiers. There you are up against full time professional athlete ( I have to work a full job), with professional coaches, technical officials, brand new equipment etc etc . Oh and the nearest qualifying even for me is 7000kms away in a different hemisphere. 80% of my particular sports events are in or around Europe… the European athlete can drive to their events. I have to catch a 20+ hour flight , switch to a different season ( I’m usually in the Southern Hemisphere winter so my bio rhythms are out of sync). And go through all sorts of visa regulations etc etc which European’s don’t have to go through. The last time we had an event in my country in summer ( NH winter) the temperature was 30+ degrees, at 1500m above sea level and a UV index on 13 …The Scandinavians had severe sunburn and we had to have Oxygen for most of the athletes from other countries as they literally would pass out. Bottom line is you CANNOT compare using a graph above. My country did not exist for the first 3 Olympics and was not allowed to participate in another 12. If we were allowed to and had even 1/100th of the amount of money that Norway spends on its athletes … that table would look VERY different , and that goes for every 3rd world country! One last thing … take a look at the athletes especially in the long distance events … in this Olympics … the marathon will have 30 different athletes with Kenyan/Somali/Ethiopian surnames running for the U.S./Canada/ Australia/ Europe/ Arab countries … why because the rich countries just “buy” the athletes. give me €100 billion and I will create and send a team from “Eswatini” that will clean up all the medals in the Summer, Winter and Paralympics
Exacly, strange list..
@@Verita1975very good points, and never mentioned when those who win the medals beat their chests in triumph in what has always been an unfair and skewed system. Further, this could also be said about inequalities within even the rich countries themselves. As example, when the US had the Coca Cola Olympics in 1996, the US track cycling fédération spent millions (somewhere around 9-12 million) developing a track specific bike which resulted in only two US silver medals. Apply enough money, and absolutely anything is possible/achievable.
Because a deaf athlete should compete with those missing limbs... ridiculous.@@Verita1975
