I've been a "Metal" fan since I was a little kid listening to my brother's Deep Purple albums back in the early 1970s. There is just something about "thrash" from about 1984 - 1990 that cannot be replicated. One of the greatest eras in music ever.
+Clarence Doskocil I am so glad you put those quotes, because Deep Purple was actually not meta, even though some writers have said thatl. For music to be metal, it needs to meet at least one three requirements: 1. There must be palm muting, and or soloing in the guitar portion, if that exists. 2. It must be something you can headbang to. 3. The drums must emulate a violent altercation of some sorts, so double bass rolls are metal, but the drummer for the eagles does not sound metal. Nor does "Smoke On The Water" which people naively say is the first metal song. Sabbath was writing the first metal. EDIT: The first metal song is "Helter Skelter" by The Beatles. Black Sabbath is just some bullshit that ignoramuses write in history books about metal.
Iain Bell I would say so, if you keep the use of the word "metal" exact enough. All metal music is distinct for those reasons, so one can define it in that way.
I totally agree man!! I got into Testament around 1988 or so....shortly after Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Megadeth and Anthrax. Testament was first among a second set of amazing bands i got into in the late 80's ...Overkill, Kreator, Forbidden, Death Angel, Metal Church and Sepultura. I often wondered if The Legacy was the best album of all the bands mentioned, but that is just too damn hard to say with certainty. ".....Holding the quest for freeeeeDOM.....that BECKONS MEEEEEEE!!"
I agree that Testament does Bay Area thrash great justice. I think Death Angel does it better, but Testament follows right behind and that's saying a LOT. For me, thrash metal is represented by Death Angel, Testament and Exodus. The Bay Area kills it. One of my favorite thrash songs of all time is "The Preacher".
But Testament only has four good albums. Like all those thrash bands of the 80's, in the 90's and onwards they sold out. Now Testament may play thrash, but's too shitty, modern and metalcored for my taste. They fucking suck now.
My list of thrash bands, Testament, Slayer, Warbringer, Kreator, Toxic Holocaust, Anthrax, Exmortus, Exodus, old school Metallica, Annihilator, Evile, Overkill, Destruction, Sodom, Death Angel, Suicidal Angels and Havok.

I don't understand how people call Testament a 'Metallica clone'. They sound completely different and are waayy more technical than metallica. (Although metallicas riffs are simple, they still kick serious ass and require a lot of endurance)

Testament is THE most underrated band in all of Metal. And this song still gets me fired up just as much as the day it was released! At 50 years old Testament enables me to still be able to run through brick walls..
the energy and power here by these young guys made me take notice as a few hours earlier was listeneing to native blood which is also a powerful tune but over the wall runs circles around n blood and to me thats remarkable.
I miss 80s metal. There are so few bands out now that sound anything like this. Testament deserved more recognition in the 80s. They're every bit as good as the big 4 were.

I swear I heard this solo...is just amazing how it's performed..this solo just took my breath away. I have a feeling that this solo is in my favourite solos list
One thing Testament has that bands like Metallica don't is consistency. Always delivering quality, aggressive, uncompromising classic thrash. Sure, they have some truly beautiful melodies, but they've always delivered the goods in the heavy department, not once dropping the ball. Farken love these guys 🤘🤘
I remember being a young metal head back in the 90's and seeing this video on VH1. I was stoked to find another band that sounded like the stuff I liked (Metallica, Megadeth), but I missed who it was on the video. After doing much research (this was pre-internet, mind you) I finally figured it out and was so happy. \,,/

Chuck Billy's "Whitest Teeth In Bay Area Thrash Metal" award won him an all- access package to Alcatraz so they could film this video.

I don't understand how people call Testament a 'Metallica clone'. They sound completely different and are waayy more technical than metallica.
(Although metallicas riffs are simple, they still kick serious ass and require a lot of endurance)
Dr. Psychedelic and Metallica sucked throughout the 90s and 2000s whereas Testament were consistent
Because of "Practice" - "Ritual"
testament are somewhere between metallica and slayer and that makes them the best
Calling them a Metallica clone is to be totally ignorant and musically deaf! Hell Metallica could learn several things from Testament!

Alex Skolnick the most melodious lead guitar in thrash metal
I just visited Alcatraz last week. The entire time I was there I was thinking about this music video 😻

A big 4 mediocre rip off band in the big 4..., lmfao

The Dynamo sticker & shirt makes this one very special for the Dutch! Small European country big, in thrash history!
The solo on this never fails to please. Even after all these years.
Maybe the best debut album by any band in metal history.
