- Taking a look at the Kobalt 7 1/4 inch miter saw. Talking about my experience with the saw and my opinion on who this saw is for and if you should purchase this saw or not.
**Disclaimer** I shot this video a couple of months ago and am just now posting it to RUclips. I have a couple other videos that have been shot over the past couple of months that have not made it to the editing room yet coming out back to back to back. I returned this saw to Lowes after trying it out for a few weeks and ultimately purchased the Metabo HPT Miter Saw which I did a review on and can be found on my channel.

This video is a couple months old but I am going through and posting all the videos that I have taped, but have not posted. So videos will be coming back to back to back.
I believe the Hercules miter saw actually comes with 12 month warranty. HF is going hard vs DeWalt on the miter saw. Honestly that’s the one I’m going to get. I do have an old Chicago Electric 10” miter saw ( the orange one ) I’ve had for years and after putting a Dewalt finish blade on it it cuts true. For construction work (2” stock) I use Diablo for finish work I use Dewalt
How do you adjust the depth of cut
*I was able to use the stop to cut my pieces all the same **MyBest.Tools** Only let the blade come to a complete stop before lifting it back up otherwise it might 'catch' the work and inadvertently move the stop. Used a second clamp for holding.*
I am a woodworker and used this for four years with no issues. Everything was flawless and I never had to adjust it during the 4 years I owned it. I loved that saw, and would buy one again, but I needed something that can gang cut multiple 2x4s at once. I upgraded to a hitachi saw, and even then, I still like the kobalt saw. For me, the kobalt saw is a money maker.
The saw was designed for the DIY’er or possibly trim carpenters. Although the weakness with 99% saws is the blades that come with them. Going with a Diablo or upscale Dewalt blade could get the cuts true.
Got this saw for $65 at Lowe’s. Best saw for trim for price and I’ve been doing finish carpentry for 35 years. small adjustment are easy to make
We're you able to fine tune it for accurate cuts?
@@Masdyl1319 yes there’s a stopper screw on the bevel that needed to be adjusted out off the box. As long u keep an eye on that before you cut, it’s all good
Ok. Is there an adjustment for squaring the fence to the blade or is the fence fixed? I know my Bosch 12in slide I can fine tune the the fence to square the blade. Just looking for a small saw to throw in the truck for easy jobs.
@@Masdyl1319 no the fence is not fixed there are 4 bolts that allow you to move fence back and forth
how you get it so cheap
I agree with you on buying a tool and having more features that are needed. I have also been looking to pick up a miter saw but my starting size is at the 12 inch level. Great video and stay safe.
nice review dude!!! helped out a lot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my Kobalt 71/4" miter saw has been great, i to had that slight cut difference. how I fixed it was cleaning the sliding locking mechanism. it had saw dust and metal shavings. thanks for the video..
Great honest video. Thanks you
Good video Brian @Redemption Garage
Thanks for the info. Now i made up my mind what to buy. The 71/4" is cute though
You spoke the truth that’s refreshing
Take it for what it is, I have a DeWalt 10" miter saw. I have had it for years and it has served me quite well. The miter is spot on but every so often the bevel needs to be readjusted. It's not a sliding miter saw but I also didn't want the extra size and weight.
I feel the 10" saws are a good compromise. The cut capacity is decent and the blades are considerably cheaper than 12".
Super Cool Video, Brian! I can’t speak on the saw. I am a mechanic, definitely not a carpenter. Keep the videos coming though. Thanks Again!
I've used this saw for 3 years, making Anniversary , keepsake boxesand more that sell for$125 plus. Keep it set and let the blade do the work
For anyone looking at this price range right now. Home Depot has a Ryobi 10" sliding miter saw, 15 amp, for $179.
I just purchased a 7-1/4 Kobalt Sliding Mitre Saw machine as well.
But what I plan to use it for is to cut aluminum.
Aluminum extrusion bars so I can build frames of enclosures and jigs
and also to cut aluminum stock down to size so i can mill it.
Now the thing is, the saw that comes with the machine is meant for cutting wood.
But what I purchased is a saw to cut non-ferrous metals like aluminum.
I'll replace the existing (wood cutting) blade on the saw with this saw meant to cut soft metals like aluminum / copper.
The saw won't be able to cut steel.
But I'm not working with steel.
The torque is not quite as powerful on this saw so go SLOW with the cuts through aluminum
and take it easy on the saw
or so I've read.
And just like that, the Kobalt turns into a machine to cut soft metals.
You could give it a try if you need to build a frame for your picnic table or other stuff and mix the aluminum extrusions cut to size with wood. Look to see how these extrusions are connected together and end caps for them as well. It looks really neat.
I think it will look good.
I have the same problems with the accuracy and I figured out that there is play in the rails. There is always a little "wiggle" and that is what makes it cut out of square.
Just bought on Black Friday for $99 + $20 off (Honey coupon). Nothing else on the market can currently touch it as a sub $100 sliding miter saw for trim work.
What is a honey coupon?
It's an app can definitely bring you some savings thru your searches

its when your wife allows you
to make the purchase.
Used a either 12 or 14” slider miter kobolt for years lot of tongue and groove jobs and barn wood. Now I’m cutting trim mostly trim and don’t want to drag out a beast mounted to a portable table top when all I’m cutting is base, quarter round and simple casing all under 4”. But I’m not looking to break the bank either by getting millwuakee
If you want a really decent all around compound miter saw, at a decent price, you might want to check out the Ryobi 10 inch compound miter saw. It makes excellent, accurate cuts. I also have the Metabo 10 inch miter saw that I picked up for a steal. The guy was going to build a deck with it, then decided he would rather hire someone to do it for him! He just wanted to get rid of it. The Metabo has a ton of cutting power, but the Ryobi is more versatile. You might want to check it out.
I purchased basically because of the lower amperage draw, I have limited power in my shop. I make small cabinets so I don't need the large capacity but I also need a decent 45 that mates. I haven't set it up yet so I can't say anything about it except it's an upgrade from my old (died) Sears Companian basic miter saw from the 80's....
Very important for precision sawing it doesn't matter which machine.the best you can do buy always a Slide Compound Mitre Saw with the handle in a line above the saw blade, everything has to be in line Slide bar rails, handle, and saw blade. it's better no tilt saw blade, and engine with softstart .
Handle vertical or horizontal above saw blade is okay if it is in line above the saw blade and in line with slide bar.Everything has to be in line this is important examples: bosch gcm 800 sj / gcm 8 slj professiona / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / EVOLUTION RAGE R255 sms / HITATCHI C12RSH2 / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX .
.
The best you can do
buy always a miller saw white handle centered in line above the saw blade (aluminum housing) winn winn. And no handle on the side of the saw blade aluminum housing there is always torsion in the aluminum housing...
It is possible, if you want. you can test it yourself at home. first you make a cut +- 5mm deep in a piece of flat wood with the normal handle that is on the right side of the saw. Then you do the same but now you press the saw low with your hand on the
aluminum protective cover without the engine running. Now you can see whether the saw blade enters or next to the cut..
i have the kobalt 10" slider. that's a heavy saw! Since I don' have a shop I can leave everything set up in, I'm looking at 7 1/4" saws. there aren't many to choose from.
I got that miter with Diablo metal blade for cutting steel been working well for a year
I was thinking of doing the exact same thing. Good to know that it works.
I bought it and plan to put a DeWalte metal blade for non-ferrous metals
on it in place of the wood cutting saw it comes with
since i want to cut aluminum extrusions
and aluminum 6061 stock for milling.
Hope it works out for me.
have you adjusted the fence with a square
I just picked one up for 60 bucks lightly used.
The Electricity for any saw is pretty negligible in my opinion.
The saw uses 10 amps for about 5 seconds per cut, meaning 50 cuts is about 208Wh.
[(10*120)*(5*50) = 300000Ws = 208Wh]
Your led kitchen lights are about 9W and theres probably about 8 of them so running the kitchen lights for 3 hours is about the same.
[(9*8)*(60*60*3) = 777600Ws = 216Wh]
Using your kitchen lights all day is way worse than using the saw. And remember those 60W incandescent light bulbs? Holy cow, running those stupid things all day is enough electricity to build 20 park benches :) Thank goodness for led lights. And thank you for the nice review. Very helpful.
i think he's talking about
electricity usage
in terms of the power output of the saw.
Makita Mitre saws are my favorite.
Do they even still make them? I don't believe I've seen any in stores for years.
How does it do with cutting 4x4’s? I wanted to use it for home projects. Nothing major.
i bought this saw for $50 a few months back i works great for that price
Portability. The weight may important for some folk with limited on-the-job use cases.
Upgrade to a Diablo blade maybe.
The beauty of the 7 1/4 is price of blades
Get the makita 10 inch sliding miter saw, Homedepot has a special on it.
it is dead on accurate and comes battery. You wont need another miter saw again. ALSO you can cut the price in half if you return the two free batteries that they give you.
Well you paid nearly double what everybody else does. I paid $100 for mine to fantastic little saw to bring on little jobs. We're you don't want to bust out your $800 chop saw
I just picked up the dewalt 12 inch double bevel sliding compound miter saw flexvolt 120v corded and cordless model kit with 2 battery wall acdc adapter dual bay charger and the heavy duty rolling dewalt miter saw stand for 600 dollers instead of the normal 1300 dollers from home depot for red white and blue days and its been very beastly works well im not a carpenter eaither but I love this machine @Redemption Garage
Bought one a year ago, and for some reason, the Miter Saw is doing kickback. I tried to return a Lowes is not accepting back. I tried multiple times through Kobalt support and no answer. In other words: there's no warranty for this product.
Thanks for the feedback brother. That is definitely worth knowing and crazy.
There's a 3 year warranty...There's ways of getting this replaced if they refuse. Let's just say buy and return very simple.
So good framing saw but not woodworking..account the being slight off on angles
Stopped video at 4:00 when you said the saw can't cut an accurate 90 or 45.
It’s 99.00 not 169.00
Get on CPO ,get you a refurb
Clamp your work and the cuts are damn near square. For me anyway.
Garbage laser location
My opinion 7" is worthless. Is like you said is better to have it and not use it than need it and not have it go with a 12".
I have a dewalt 12" dws779 $349 and i love it.
$349 for a 12"? Wow thats really cheap. Im on the wrong side of the world for woodworking😥😊
Dewalt 12” slider is $579.00
I do punch lists for a kitchen & basement renovation company. Literally ALL I cut is 1/4” shoe molding or an occasional 1x6 to reinforce a vent. Hauling a heavy, bulky 10-12” miter saw just isn’t practical I need this saw.
Lowe’s has the Dewalt 12” compound mitre saw for $199.00 It’s not the slider though. I’m kind of leaning towards the 10” slider. Mainly so I can interchange blades with my table saw if I need to.
It's not a good all around saw for sure but it's not worthless for me lol.I use it for trim work and it does the job. Do you think I want to lug my 12" Dewalt around if I don't have to? That sucker is heavy and stays fixed unless there's a very good reason to haul it somewhere.
