What a brave undertaking. I got a lot out of watching someone else struggle. Also makes me really appreciate how difficult it is for Sarah to keep her hands out of the way while demonstrating. Hard to do for a beginner. She does it amazingly well, turns out.
Great! I enjoyed seeing you get to know all the products from the embroiderer perspective. I loved all the deep sighs and holding of breath - I’m sure all us novices do that too!
Kudos, snaps etc to Jonathon - not only did you do a good job but you agreed to get in front of the camera! Not many husbands would do that; mine just looked quizzical when I asked him if he’d give embroidery a go, never mind do so in front of a camera! So you have my admiration for the whole project, as do the cats for lending their support!
He is rather a good narrator for the lesson. Confident and knows how to talk to an audience. No "erms", "likes", "y'know", "sort ofs", repetition or waffle. Sarah, you can happily take a poorly day when you have the flu and Mr H will admirably step into your shoes.
Well done Jonathan. I realize this video was made two years ago, so by now you are a complete expert. I thought your work showed great creativity. My father was an amazing cross-stitcher and even the back of his work looked neat. I think more men should give needlework a try.
That was really cute, and SO nice to see someone who has hardly had a needle in their hands finish a piece! BRAVO! 👏 Oh...and yes...have a go at the text!
LOVE THE INTRO ! Lovely video and Jonathan was amazing to persevere for someone doing it first time. Lovely to the face of those behind the camera ! Well done Jonathan 😁👍🏼👏🏼
Whew! That was hard to watch at first. But Johnathan did it! Gives me hope. I broke my wrist in three places 10 years ago and still don’t have good mobility which makes it harder to do embroidery. But seeing him patiently work at it makes me want to work harder. I love you both. ❤️❤️❤️
I think it is so cool when you see your pattern form in front of your own eyes? and not bad for a first timer Jonathan and you have a good teacher Sarah
Liberating to see a beginner make mistakes, acknowledge them and work around them, and end up with a finished piece! It always surprises to know that "I'm not the only one!" Thanks to you both.
I recently discovered your channel, as I'm getting back into embroidery after several years off. This is my favorite video! Jonathan is such a good sport, and did so well! My husband has done some cross-stitch- on his own, before we met-, so I plan to show him this video and see if it sparks any interest.
I remember seeing Rosey Grier doing needlepoint (circa 1970) when I was a kid and thought only real men eat quiche!...this video gave me such a giggle to watch even when the spangle was at an angle...it looked like the kite was really flying. This is the beauty of real handwork. Congrats on a well done video.
I loved every minute of it. Reminds me of my husband trying his hand at crochet. He was taught a bit back in middle school, but decided on a whim to give it a try again. Needless to say I think he will leave all future projects for me lol. Oh forgot to mention he's a lefty
I really liked this video. And I would love to see another one with Jonathan doing some bead embroidery by a beginner. I am a beginner and would love to see another beginner starting off.
Wow, good job! Thank you for being brave enough to have your first attempt filmed for us all to see, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be that brave! Especially if I was married to an expert like you!
That was extremely good for a beginner. Well done Mr. Homfray! The concentration on his face made me smile. I guess for somebody who is not used to sewing is the handling the needle and threads takes a bit of getting used to. What is the next project?
Well done Jonathan, at least you didn't fling it across the room as some men I know would have done! It turned out really good and I think text should definitely be your next project - with the help of ginger cat and stinky cat of course!
I have only just discovered this video and what a joy it was to watch. Hats off to Jonathon he did much better than I did at my one and only attempt at goldwork which was about 40 years ago and to this day remains unfinished!
Jonathan, you did a great job with this new experience. I hope that you will continue and become more comfortable so it becomes relaxing and enjoyable.
I almost got frustrated with Jonathan 😆 how fun though, he’s learned so much from you! Not bad…his fingers are bigger of course…gosh I love the kitty cats. Art has no age my good man. Overnight! What!😂 Did you have dreams of what you wanted to do? Sometimes I get no sleep because I’m thinking on how to complete a project. 🤷🏻♀️ oy 🤦🏻♀️ I know all of us artists need to be kind to ourselves when creating. We are perfectionists but as my mom once told me, others that don’t have that artistic eye, can’t see our mistakes, so don’t mention it. You did great! Kudos to you and Sarah! 🙏🏽🙋🏻♀️👍🏽Mia
Well first of all, Jonathan is adorable. You are a cute couple and it’s lovely to see you together. I was impressed with Jonathan’s first attempt at embroidery. He did a great job!
A really enjoyable video and such an endearing couple you make. It was so useful to see the rookie mistakes that can be made . Roll on the next 'Jonathan ' video, what next?
I wanted to say thank-you to you Sara. Your husband and you are so cute together. I love your advice and it shows in my work as I am getting better. I love you free PDF’s. Your ideals are amazing and love being a member.
That was a really fun video. Jonathan did a brilliant job for a first time embroiderer. It was interesting to see him tackle the different parts and it gives hope to any newbies to just give it a try. Hope to see a series coming from this...maybe? 🤔😊
Very charming, so nice to see a couple working together . I imagine this experience has given him a new perspective on the challenges that Sarah faces. A pretty good effort though, particularly given large hands and a camera in the way! I would like to see Johnathan make a Hardanger coaster using needle weaving and picots! He might consider that more of a challenge!
The best video I've watched on RUclips!!! Jonathan u did an excellent job. WOW, I didn't think I would ever tried this but now if he can do it, I can too. Thank you for making this very encouraging video. And yes please do the text.
Jonathan, you are so funny. You are too much of a perfectionist for a newbie! Relax and enjoy (remember Rosey Grier?). You did an incredible job whether or not this was your first or 400th project. And you started at the top rung - gold work!!! Loved your color selections and your finished project. Let’s see it framed!
Yay! Love this 😁 thank you Jonathan, good on ya! Had to laugh at some of your "that'll do" comments - I guess that's where some of the gaps came from 🤔. Utmost respect - can't imagine my husband giving it a go.
Watching May 2024 - You're a good sport Jonathan. I'm watching as I'm thinking of taking embroidery up. My wife has been encouraging me to have a go. I've watched a couple of Sarah's tutorials. Too early to say if I'll stick at it, but it was fantastic to see how it is from a guy's perspective, especially a newby like myself. I'll keep going for now. Thank you very much.
I think he did so well, many men don’t find it relaxing like women do, also they are not renowned for their patience for this sort of thing either, so I think Johnathan did great, I want him to try Rapunzel please xx
So refreshing to see such a different video. Well done J - my husband would have said his fingers were too big and his glasses too weak and thrown it across the room. Must admit I was laughing at the out takes - you obviously have great senses of humour - Sarah looked like she about to burst out laughing all the time 😂😂 And yes J - lets see how your text skills shape up 😻
I absolutely enjoyed this video! Although I haven’t tried this type of embroidery (I’m very new to embroidery) I could relate with his struggles as a beginner. I’d love to see him have a go at more. Wonderful job!
....just found this after scrolling through your library to catch-up any I had missed and absolutely loved it! Hurray for Jonathan being willing to jump straight in and on camera too!! It was good to see him recognising and assessing his (little) mistakes along the way and how to fix them and all in all such a fun video to watch. More please Jonathan, and hilarious to see Sarah sneaking in for a behind the scenes look-see👍
I know that Jonathan is a very skilled and experienced modeller, so the dexterity with fiddly things is obviously transferrable! Like your technical term 'string'....😂

Hello normaski, Jonathan here. Thank you for the comments - it was fun to take Sarah's challenge to try some thing new and maybe (just maybe!) I now have had another eye test and have new glasses and AND better magnification I might try something else. I know, I know, Sarah always tells me the same about my beard 😂
Dear Jonathan, I'm just now seeing this video and want to congratulate you on your first embroider piece. And it's gold work! And your work is commendable!! It turned out very well for a first timer, not sure I could have done any better, but think I will now have a go. Thought that it was funny when he said it was not challenging, but maybe he could try silk shading next to see if that is more challenging. Will watch for the video.
WOW!
That is so sweet he embroidrery for you !
What a patient man...willing to listen to his wife instructions!!!!!! Very well exexcuted!!!!!!Sarah you have a generous man. Love both of you
Your husband is a good sport. He did a great job 😊
😅 How fun. What a wonderful husband. You made it look achievable Jonathan. Thankyou
What a brave undertaking. I got a lot out of watching someone else struggle. Also makes me really appreciate how difficult it is for Sarah to keep her hands out of the way while demonstrating. Hard to do for a beginner. She does it amazingly well, turns out.
And not to lean over the piece and get my head in the way too Mary!
O M G you two are so adorable! Kudos to you Jonathon for being brave enough to try something new on camera! You did great!
It’s great to see someone who is new like me. Thanks!
This is great .
I love the ‘oops’. It sounds like me trying learn embroidery. It makes me feel less alone in this journey. Thanks for sharing
You are not alone Peggy! We had to edit out the more rude words! Just keep on stitching and it will come...
Refreshing to see someone who has no experience doing embroidery for the first time. Kudos to you both!😊👍
Thanks for your sup[port Rebecca! J.
28:03: "Lives his life like a spangle in the wind". So silly and yet, so true! 🤣
Great! I enjoyed seeing you get to know all the products from the embroiderer perspective. I loved all the deep sighs and holding of breath - I’m sure all us novices do that too!

By the magic of editing all the swear words were taken out Claire!!! :)

Oh...and yes...have a go at the text!
Thank you! Maybe I will try some text - eventually! J.
I think you did a fine job with difficult techniques! I love the manicure too
Well done Jonathan 👌
Thank you Colin! J.
I loved the intro! He was a little complicated but did a great job! Well done!
Yes please Jonathan, I am new to Gold work and it is encouraging to see a beginner having a go.
Loved watching. Great first effort.
Sarah, you are bursting with pride! He did very well.
I think you are confusing pride with exasperation Mary!
Wonderful video! Good on you Johnathan for trying .. you did great!
Thanks so much Staphanie.
Clearly, he is the Ginger Cat Patter. A critical job! 🎉
The most important job of all!
Hey ho hey ho.....what a great sport he was!! I really enjoyed watching this
LOVE THE INTRO ! Lovely video and Jonathan was amazing to persevere for someone doing it first time. Lovely to the face of those behind the camera ! Well done Jonathan 😁👍🏼👏🏼
Looks as if it’s not the first time Jonathan does that. Looks great. No reason to become nervous.
That was definitely the first time he has done any embroidery Margo!
Perfect! Exactly what we needed to see. Great job you two!
Whew! That was hard to watch at first. But Johnathan did it! Gives me hope. I broke my wrist in three places 10 years ago and still don’t have good mobility which makes it harder to do embroidery. But seeing him patiently work at it makes me want to work harder. I love you both. ❤️❤️❤️

What a lovely couple, he is such a good sport. I thoroughly enjoyed the banter and his bravery hahaha thanks for sharing.
Hey ho. :) He is adorable. I'm impressed. Looks challenging working with such tiny pieces. Fantastic job.
This was brilliant, good man and a cat man, watched it a while back 😻
What a delightful couple you are, thank you for this video, its not easy being the other side of the camera :) well done Jonathan on your embroidery.
I recently discovered your channel, as I'm getting back into embroidery after several years off. This is my favorite video! Jonathan is such a good sport, and did so well! My husband has done some cross-stitch- on his own, before we met-, so I plan to show him this video and see if it sparks any interest.
You have my full respect for attempting this project…. Not sure I would have been brave enough! Great job!
I remember seeing Rosey Grier doing needlepoint (circa 1970) when I was a kid and thought only real men eat quiche!...this video gave me such a giggle to watch even when the spangle was at an angle...it looked like the kite was really flying. Good job, my fingers was hurting my first time. It's not an easy skill but you made it look easy, congrats on finishing it.

I think that was Jon's one and only foray into embroidery Lisa!
I really liked this video. And I would love to see another one with Jonathan doing some bead embroidery by a beginner. I am a beginner and would love to see another beginner starting off.
I'll ask him Kristen!
Wow, good job! Thank you for being brave enough to have your first attempt filmed for us all to see, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be that brave! Especially if I was married to an expert like you!

I'm glad you think so May. It was fun to do too! J
Jolly good seeing it is your first time. I would have been all thumbs. Keep up the good work.
That was extremely good for a beginner. Well done Mr. Homfray! The concentration on his face made me smile. I guess for somebody who is not used to sewing is the handling the needle and threads takes a bit of getting used to. What is the next project?
Thank you Sophie! The next project (after another eye test and probably new specs!) may be to add some text to the kite. Or maybe not... J.
That was fun! I'm a beginner too, so nice to see the trouble shooting process from another beginner's point of view. 👍
Well done Jonathan, at least you didn't fling it across the room as some men I know would have done! It turned out really good and I think text should definitely be your next project - with the help of ginger cat and stinky cat of course!
Thanks Christine. I'll probably try some text eventually - if I can persude Ginger Cat & Stinky Cat to join in again. J.

Enjoyed this so much! Great job, Jonathan. 🎉🎉🎉

This was wonderful. It's nice to see someone else who is very new to this giving it a try. And the ginger cat cameo (catmeo?) was a nice intro!
Thank you Megan. I think Ginger Cat was only there because he wanted feeding :) J.
Welldone Johnathan, for having a go, for your first time to tackle goldwork was brave, its not easy, I am sure Sarah is very proud of you !!!
I wanted to say thank-you to you Sara. Your husband and you are so cute together. I love your advice and it shows in my work as I am getting better. I love you free PDF’s. Your ideals are amazing and love being a member.

Sarah I really look forward to your videos.....again so full of information. Thanks for sharing.
You did a very good job Jonathon!
That was enjoyable, being a beginner myself it was nice seeing a beginner doing embroidery ❤️
You did well Jonathan, loved the video.
Thnaks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it! J.
I think he did so well, many men don’t find it relaxing like women do, also they are not renowned for their patience for this sort of thing either, so I think Johnathan did great, I want him to try Rapunzel please xx
I'm not sure he found it even slightly relaxing Jacqui! I'll pass on your Rapunzel request...:)
Excellent job, Jonathan. Can't wait to see your next project!
That's kind of you. I'm encouraged to have another go now!
AGREED!!
Well done Johnathan, I have never done good work, yet! but am now intrigued! ❤
So refreshing to see such a different video. Well done J - my husband would have said his fingers were too big and his glasses too weak and thrown it across the room.
Must admit I was laughing at the out takes - you obviously have great senses of humour - Sarah looked like she about to burst out laughing all the time 😂😂
And yes J - lets see how your text skills shape up 😻
He did all of those things Tess bar actually throwing it across the room. The power of editing! :))

Yes . Can we see Jonathan do the more. 😊
Well done Jonathan! You are a great sport and a great finished piece! You need to frame it 😺
That was fun to watch💕 can’t wait for your next project Jonathan. So glad I found your channel 🥰
Bless him. I have not done goldwork yet. I do want to try it. And will probably be like Jonathan.
Jonathan, you did was well 👏
Well done. Enjoyed the video.
Ok, that was adorable..yr hubby Jonathan did an excellent job..my hubby and eldest son had done bit of sewing..very fun to watch, ty for sharing that
Loved it!
I know that Jonathan is a very skilled and experienced modeller, so the dexterity with fiddly things is obviously transferrable! Like your technical term 'string'....😂
It's coloured string attached to a pointy stick. J.
Thanks guys for sharing yourselves and this tutorial with us. It was actually a good idea because I am able to learn from your hubby’s mishaps which allows me to stay alert to same potential issues.
Hi 🙌🏾’s guys
Lovely idea, to put a beginner to show us so we may feel confident when it comes to us. Thanks a lot Johnathan! You showed us that everybody can do it, despite of skill, age or gender. Greetings from Argentina. I'm a huge fan, now more than before. (Johnathan, you look much younger without the beard)
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery never thought you were to answer 😍 Thanks a lot!
Congrat you are doing it very well
He is also easy on the eyes, I can say that as I am almost 79 !
Ha! You can say what you like May!
I’m 77 and was trying to figure out a way of saying that same thing. But of course the man behind the looks is obviously just a love.
He is smiling after the spanked, that's good!🤗
Dear Jonathan,
I'm just now seeing this video and want to congratulate you on your first embroider piece. And it's gold work! And your work is commendable!! I'm about to give gold work a try for the first time, so this was helpful for me to see another beginner and to learn from what you found easier and what you found a bit trickier. You served as a good role model with your attitude of making the best of rough spots and going with the flow rather than getting all frustrated. I also really liked that you made this piece your own by changing out the leathers and threads to suit your own taste. Kudos for your success and for your courage to do this on camera for all of us to see!
Now that you've had a couple of years to practice (you did practice, right?), I'd love to see you tackle a hardanger project, as that is also in my future! Thanks!!! 😀
It turned out very well for a first timer, not sure I could have done any better, but think I will now have a go. Thought that it was funny when he said it was not challenging, but maybe he could try silk shading next to see if that is more challenging. Will watch for the video.
If Jon can do it anyone can! He said it wasn't challenging but you didn't see all the parts that were edited out...:)!
Well done!!
Yeah we’d like to see John finish this with the writing....well done
Thanks Clairey!! J.
