I have been doing hardanger for 25 years. I learned to do it without a hoop, that supposedly it was traditionally not done with a hoop. All stitching is done on top of the linen. When finishing your threads, weave under, then turn back, go over the last stitch and work back through the stitches you’ve already woven under. This is a tighter finish for table linens and such that are used and washed instead of being just decorative. Another tip I recommend is to get a fine pair of hardanger scissors. These have smaller blades, so it’s easier to cut your threads. They are more pricy but worth it.
I've been embroidering and sewing since childhood (60 plus years!) and I've tried most embroidery techniques, but not Hardanger so - let me try Hardanger and see how it goes!
I studied in a convent school and our nuns taught us the basic Hardanger stitches when I was about 14 years old - I am 69 now. I never knew it was called Hardanger! so let me try Hardanger . You explain it so well and make it look so easy and that is what has encouraged me to start a Hardanger project.
My mother started a piece when she was first married, somewhere around 1950. I found the piece in her cedar chest when I was a teen in the 70s and asked her about it. She told me what it was and I asked her,‘ Let me try Hardanger’ but we never got around to it. I am so glad it is not a forgotten art. I would love to try my hand so let me try Hardanger. Thank you for the giveaway and good luck everyone!
My Aunt made me a gorgeous Hardanger years ago (she is now 95 & cannot see to stitch) and I treasure it. Always wanted to know how to do it. Your tutorial is excellent and showed me how much work my Aunt did. Thank you! let me try Hardanger
So many people say that there is no interest in fine needlework in todays world. There is definitely interest, it has simply gone in a different direction. I taught myself to do Hardanger when I moved to Germany as it was everywhere! There was no one to teach me, no videos. I found an instruction book, learned from there. 2 years after I had taught myself, I began teaching classes to others. It was so rewarding to see the look in my students eyes when I knew they got it!
let me try Hardanger This is amazing, the first I've ever heard of this technique. I remember in high school asking my sewing teacher if we would ever learn embroidery and she looked at me like I was an idiot and said its just sticking a needle through fabric. was such a let down. But I want to learn it all now!
let me try Hardanger. I have a great cross stitch pattern that has hardanger and I've been scared to try. Your video gave me some confidence. Thank you.
Let me try Hardanger. I have learned this a few hundred years ago at school, but it had slipped my mind a little. But now I watched your tutorial it all came back! The way you explain is perfectly clear, so thank you! Whether I win or lose, I am going to try it! Thanks !
Thank you so much Sarah! I realized after my mother died I should have asked her to teach me hardunger. But I still had an aunt who was willing to teach me. So I flew to Mn. from calif and stayed with her for a week. Not nearly enough time. I hadn’t retired yet so when I went back to calif to my teaching I couldn’t keep up practicing. Now I’m retired and found your video so maybe there is still hope. Because of COVID I couldn’t find any classes anywhere. I’m going to be tuning in to tour tutorials as often as possible and I am so excited! Thank you so much! See you tomorrow 😁
let me try Hardanger I have been hesitating to start a kit that was gifted to me and this tutorial has given me the confidence to have a go, thank you!
let me try Hardanger Ok I think I got it this time Hi Sarah I so really love your videos I began this last August embroidery But I must say, that you are why I got hocked. Your are do authentique and you are my best embroidery teacher and you keep me stimulated. A million THANKS

let me try Hardanger. I think this is quite lovely and I would love to learn how to do it. You are a wonderful teacher and make it so easy to understand. I'm looking forward to learning this craft. Thank you, Sarah.
Perhaps foolishly I bought a Hardanger kit thinking the instructions would be easy. NOT. It was just a few diagrams for which i needed a magnifying glass. So I went online and watched 5 "How to" videos. Your was the only one I could understand properly and which left me confident enough to try it out. I won't attempt the kit I bought but I will try spare fabric until I've mastered the cutting. Your instructions are so easy to follow compared to the others I watched; especially the cutting. Thank you.
I should have said I've owned the NOrwegian National Breed of dog for 60 years; been to Norway numerous times, been learning the language for 2 years, met a lovely Norwegian friend online when she helped me to translate a Norwegian knitting pattern and I've knitted, done several types of crochet, tatting, embroidery, hairpin work and cross stitch all my life. The one thing I'd never tried was Norwegian embroidery. Now I can.
It’s been 20 years since I did hard anger. I belong to EGA but the guilt stopped meeting. I miss it. I did have my scissor fob I made . Sew much fun. Thanks for reminding me about it. The little kit would be sew sweet to get back started doing this again. Thanks for sharing
I have always wanted to try hardanger but was having trouble with cutting the threads. Your video was wonderfully helpful. Thank you! let me try hardanger
I did hardanger years ago before my children were born and now that they’re grown you’ve inspired me to pick it up again! Also we didn’t have RUclips back then, and now that I watch so many crafting videos that are super zoomed in I realize why all the old ladies wore magnifiers when stitching and now I’m the old lady who needs a magnifier! 🤣
Let me try Hardanger. Thank you for the video.I have my mum's half done tablecloth when we lost her.I now know how to finish it.I've had it for 13 years but never had the know how or confidence to finish it
let me try Hardanger I've been embroidering since I was a kid and have never tried this before. Now, as I'm teaching my daughter, I found myself wanting to expand my library of techniques as much as possible and I think we'd both enjoy this!

I learned Hardanger many years ago. I went into my local craft shop to buy some threads, but there was a long queue to pay, so I started looking at patterns. I saw a Leisure Arts book :- Teach yourself Hardanger. I looked at it over and over for about six months before I tried it. By then I thought I can do this. Because I had looked at the book so much I started and it was very easy, but it is the American version. I use the Hardanger fabric, though I now know I should be using a much finer linen fabric with linen thread to be authentic. Love your videos.
Thank you so much for this hardanger tutorial! My great grandmother was Swedish and my great grandfather was Norwegian, and one great aunt (their daughter) stitched hardanger. So please let me try Hardanger and continue my family heritage!

I have been embroidering and cross stitching for years, in my spare time, trying the different types and techniques. I like the way you do your tutorials. Even a more experienced needle person can pick up a thing or two.
Let me try Hardanger. I love handicrafts. This is the first time I come to know about Hardanger. It's so lovely and amazing that you actually cut away threads yet the embroidery still stays in place. I really want to start Hardanger.
I have always admired this needlework, but did not know how it was created. I am very interested in creating a piece of work in this style. Thank you for the tutorial. let me try Hardanger
Hi, I have always wanted to try Hardanger but was put off by the thought of cutting the threads. Your video has given me the confidence to have a go, so please let me try Hardanger.
Thank you for the inspirational video's. Ik watched many of them and I am starting to learn slowly (stitch by stich) the art and skills of embroidery. I'm so proud of what I made so far thanks to your help! And this Hardanger technique is very new to me and looks very lovely so let me try Hardanger. Keep spreading your inspiration and knowledge. Ik feel connected with many centuries of woman all over the world through this craft. Thanks for your guidance!

Thank you. Got to the cutting stage of my first Hardanger and the instructions with the pattern are not clear. I now feel more confident to give it a go.
Please … let me try Hardanger …. I used to embroider 20 some years ago and recently got caught up in the ‘slow stitch’ trend. I found you by accident and I’m thoroughly enjoying your videos. Thank you for the opportunity to enter this giveaway. Happy holidays.

let me try Hardanger I have been wanting to try Hardanger for a long time. I've always thought it was beautiful but started out cross stitching about 2 years ago to learn that before stepping up to this beautiful type of stitching. I love watching you stitch.💞
It has been many years since I worked these stitches. I have so many patterns from that time, I thought "let me try Hardanger again". Can't wait to pull out those projects and choose one to start. Thank you for the inspiration.
I was taught Hardanger over 40 years ago in a small class of Beginner stitchers, in Sylvania, Ohio. It was fun, especially with the colors of the perle cotton on the white fabric. I haven't done Hardanger since as children & Nursing became the priority. I now am ready to let me try Hardanger again as I a Co-caregiver for our elderly mom. Very excited to resume my stitching. I am currently working by hand a piece of 25 st Lugana & Weeks Dye Works "Bayberry" for a Christmas tree piece. Have had to recount several times as it is a choice which way to work the stitching. I decided to stitch out each branch from the center, left side first. I am enjoying this challenge & am very thankful for the magnifier on my standing lamp as I sit in my recliner out here in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Your very clear instructions, including how to fix when you have "oopsed" is reassuring. Thanks much, Sarah.
I was 16 years old when I saw my grandmother transform this piece of fabric from a plain square into a beautiful heirloom! She was so deft and at the same time patient that it left me both speechless and in awe of her skill. Needless to say, that I have always wanted to do Hardanger, but thought that it was too difficult to do myself. However, you make it look so easy that I feel that I want to try it. Therefore, let me try Hardanger.
Let me try Hardanger. I am so impressed with this stitch pattern & think it would be beautiful on an lovely white cotton blouse. Winning these give aways is absolutely stunning!
let me try Hardanger I have always been interested in Hardanger embroidery, but never tried it. I'm from Sweden so I should have tried it. I've done loads of cross stitch when I was young. This is a brilliant tutorial. Well done!
Anne Doody let me try Hardanger I tried Hardanger some years ago but got in such a tangle I gave up. You have now shown me a more organised and simple way of doing it successfully.
Your wonderful video prompted me to try a little hardanger at long last. Your video made my first project a breeze - even with a book at hand, I would have been stymied without you. Now I am looking forward to doing more. Thank you for demystifying this technique!
It is good to hear the history of Hardanger. I watch another stitcher who is from the eastern block and she says Hardanger is a traditional technique there. I do love the history of craftwork. Many thanks Sarah.
I have switched to Earth Breeze. Clothes come out just as clean and I don’t have to lug that heavy jug home! Works for me! Less trips to the recycling center too!
I have tried a little this technique and loved it. But your instructions are so clear I know when I have another go I will be much more accurate. I did cut the wrong threads and fudged the result, but no-one noticed but me. So let me try Hardanger with your products and pretty colours to have some fun. Thank you for all your videos I love your clarity of instruction and clear demonstrations. Rachel
let me try Hardanger Your so inspirational Sarah and your videos explain all the details in simple terms making it easy to understand and follow. Thank you.

She was so deft and at the same time patient that it left me both speechless and in awe of her skill. Needless to say, that I have always wanted to do Hardanger, but thought that it was too difficult to do myself. However, you make it look so easy that I feel that I want to try it. Therefore, let me try Hardanger.

I have always been interested in Hardanger embroidery, but never tried it. I'm from Sweden so I should have tried it. I've done loads of cross stitch when I was young. This is a brilliant tutorial. Well done!

let me try Hardanger I tried Hardanger some years ago but got in such a tangle I gave up.
Well done for having a go Elizabeth! I think it's the cutting part that makes this technique a bit scary...
I'm intrigued by this stitching method. please let me try Hardanger .
It is good to hear the history of Hardanger. I watch another stitcher who is from the eastern block and she says Hardanger is a traditional technique there. I do love the history of craftwork. Many thanks Sarah.
Thanks for an interesting video. I'm no longer mystified by hardanger technique. Plus I may be brave enough to cut the fabric now.
Try on a practice bit first!

I’ve been eyeing this technique for nearly 30 years. I chose several other hand arts instead. This is fascinating! Thank you for the video.
Rachel
