As a budget friendly tip, instead of an expensive light box, I use a Ferrero rocher tray or a hard clear plastic storage box (you can get them in slim A4 size). Fill the box with battery operated lights and you have an inexpensive light box alternative. I use a slim stationary storage box and I store my work in it when I'm done. Christmas tree lights work fine if you have no other lights. I hope this helps. Edit: I'm glad you like the idea, it may not suit an amateur artist but it is inexpensive, portable and robust for transferring designs quickly. I've also heard of people putting a 🔦 torch under a glass table and tracing.
Pinky is awsome. I can not do any needle work without my 2 cats approval. They usually decide to sit DIRECTLY in front of my camera or directly ON my design. Gotta love them
Thank you so much for doing this video at normal speed and not filling up all the silence while you demonstrate the process with music. I love the stuff you share in your channel, and I follow many embroidery/appliqué/hand sewing/quilting/upcycling/mixed media channels… so many are highly edited and almost frenetic. I watched this while I cut out hexies by hand and it was a pleasant bit of calm crafty pleasure watching someone with more practice and skill without a ton of bells and whistles that spark nervous energy for me.
Thank you for showing us all of these techniques!!! I hate to tell ya, but Pinky stole the show!!! I loved the way she just gazed at the camera and smiled!!!! 😁
I am new to learning embroidery and all the many wonders that embroidery brings. Not sure why some gave a thumbs down though, because I really enjoyed watching this video, I could see that it was very well thought out with clear and informative instructions . Thank you for this. For a beginner of embroidery I learnt a lot today . 😀
Absolutely loved Pinky’s entrance!!!! 😹💕 She’s gorgeous! And also loved the fact that you didn’t move her away. I’m exactly the same with my gorgeous boy, Simon 🐾🐈⬛🫶
I sew and knit and cross stitch a lot. I M trying to break into embroidery. I would love to gift friends and family with embroidered totes and little bags. I find your tutorials so good. Thankyou ❤
I've been muddling through for years thinking I knew what I was doing and some design transferring turned out ok and some I just gave up on. Brilliant video Sarah you are so generous with your information and tips, it's just like learning in a classroom situation which is just what I needed. The sound is perfect too and no music so I don't miss any of your perfect demonstrations. Thank you so much, Sue from Yorkshire .
Pinkie is a natural born star! I love the use of different colour thread for each element in the tacking technique. Thank you again for your very clear explanation.
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Yes, that much: I've been copying images to fabric with freezer paper ironed onto fabric...which often mucks up my printer! Now I know how to transfer images to dark fabric. I also learned how to knot my thread like you do (on top) and then stitch down a few stitches under the stitched object and cutting off the ugly knot) so the back and front look neat. And the tissue paper idea is fabulous. I've used regular paper; parchment paper and interfacing with very unimpressive results. Bless you!
When we were kids, in the fifties and sixties, we would go over our designs with biro and transfer with an iron. It worked really well but may have run a tiny bit when washed. That pen looks brilliant. This is really interesting, thank you.
A little tip. Friction pens work great for needle point and if you don't have a light box you can use a glass table and lamp underneath the table to transfer the pattern.
Hi Sweetie! Just got home and watching your video in full!!! 🥰🌺❤️ Your paper scissors are so cute and I’ll tell you a little secret about the game rock, paper, scissors: Use paper on your first move - you’re more likely to win! ❤🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for letting PInkie help. Thread people need cats to appraise our work and give suggestions. Threadwork is not done till there are a few cat hairs worked in (furry master stamp of approval)... and so hard to add them later. Their expert comments are very welcome but I draw the line at pulling pins for me. What a sweet contented smile!!!!
Hello Sarah, watching your video now but just had to pause for a moment to let you know you are an absolutely adorable human being!! Your calming voice and your lovely shiny eyes make you such a peaceful presence. Thank you for the tips and expertise as well! 🥰
I just found you on RUclips and I’m so glad I did. Having the choice of 5 approaches is pretty remarkable. And you’re an excellent teacher. You must be a teacher in your other life. You give me confidence that I can do this. Bravo! I have to say, however, I was so confused when so many of the comments mentioned your cat. I was so focused on what you were doing and saying that I never saw a cat! I guess hyper-focus can also be a good thing.
Another way to transfer without a light box is to use a square/rectangle of clear hard acrylic / perspex. Set the perspex down on a stable surface. Turn your phone torch on. Put the phone under the perspex, torch light up, and place pattern on the perspex surface. Stick the pattern to the perspex with a couple pieces of washi tape, place fabric on top and holding firmly in place, trace the pattern design with your preferred marking tool
I use masking tape, it doesn’t shift as much as sellotape. I’ve used strapping tape in the past. My husband is a physio and we have a box FULL of tape ends. I’m new to your channel, I LOVED the way you demonstrated, clear & concise and solved a problem for me. I could NOT get my carbon paper to work. So frustrating. I ended up doing a variation of the tissue paper method. Thank you. 😊
Sorry Sarah but Pinkie was definitely the star of the show. I'm definitely going to give the prick & pounce method a go when I get brave enough to try dark fabric.
I just bought my first embroidery supplies an hour ago and yours was my first video. The applause when Pinky arrived was hilarious. That alone would have made me subscribe! Thank you for the laughs and the great tutorial.
What a fantastic straightforward explanation, and a joy to listen to. So refreshing not to have every step prefaced with ‘what we’re going to do is…we’re going to go right ahead and…’ And I’m in love with Pinky! Thank you, Sarah, I’ll be trying a couple of these techniques to see what works for me, as I try to prove I’m not totally hopeless at embroidery.
Thank you so much for the patient explanations! I'm a brand new baby embroiderer and I literally took notes during your video! So helpful and thorough and I loved the addition of Pinky! I have an exhibitionist cat Alex who would do the exact same thing if I was making a video! Much appreciation from California!
I did the prick and bounce process and used freezer paper I ironed on then dusted the powder this was good as nothing moved thank you for the different ways to trace 😊
This is great and super well explained, just starting embroidery and getting my own patterns instead of the kits and this madness me so much more confident ❤️
You are a great instructor. Everything is easy to follow, and your instructions are precise and succinct. Thank you so much for sharing. I wanted interesting stitching on the spines of my handmade books.
This is great! The transfer paper method is the one I’ll try since I have it at home. I spent too many minutes on RUclips & the internet looking for white washable transfer pens. 😒 as usual, many thanks Sarah!!
Thank you. This was extremely helpful. I have several projects which I haven't started because I couldn't imagine how to go from concept to transferring the concept to fabric. Here you have given my vision scope for becoming reality. I appreciate your to-the-point presentation.
Sarah, you are a very good--calm, efficient, knowledgeable and very articulate in explaining the various methods of transferring. Transferring can be fairly problematic sometimes but its so important. Thank you and thumbs up to all the methods you have tried out.
its so funny and typical of a cat. I have six cats and they are always next to me while I'm doing artwork, watching tv, getting something to eat lol, and on my bed. My beloved kitties.
Pinky looks so much like my Katie Ann who is also most ‘helpful’ with my crafting projects! Thank you for sharing Pinky and a very informative tutorial!
I have been looking for a video like this for so long, thank you!! Love that there are actually more options out there besides tracing because there are so many instances where tracing just doesn't work (like trying to embroider a jacket) Thanks again!
Yes, that is why I wanted to watch this video-I have a linen jacket that the cleaners got a solvent stain on so, even though it’s old I want to swap out the buttons, trim & come up with my own pattern for the back.
Of the methods you showed, I am gravitating toward the tracing method. There are also Aunt Martha's Hot Iron Transfers. I love them and the patterns are very old fashioned...chickens sweeping the floor, kittens in aprons doing the wash on Monday. I have a large collection from my early days in the 60s. I have done dozens of flour sacking kitchen towels, with little crocheted edgings. Thank you!
This is a really useful video tutorial so thanks Sarah. I've looked at light boxes previously but there seems to be so many different types. What is the best kind for embroidery? TIA
You are my favorite. I am a 71 year old beginner. So I saved some ddesigns from people doing this. But you really explain it so I can understand. Your tips are awesome. Which one would you use the most for the simple go to stitch to make a line 🤔 😉

Nice!
Wow!
Great idea!
Added incentive to get that Ferrero Rocher! "I needed the box!"
Only half of my lighbox is bright as it only has one bulb and it's at the side. What a brilliant idea, Christmas has come early!
Pinky is awsome. I can not do any needle work without my 2 cats approval. They usually decide to sit DIRECTLY in front of my camera or directly ON my design. Gotta love them

seriously! why is the music so LOUD too!! it stresses me out!!!!
Please don't ever stop filming due to the kitties, absolutely love when they join you.❤
Thank you for showing us all of these techniques!!! I hate to tell ya, but Pinky stole the show!!! I loved the way she just gazed at the camera and smiled!!!! 😁
I know my place! 😁
Also, I love the patience with Pinky and her taking over the spotlight haha
Her appearances are rare, so she gets indulged!
I love Pinky too. haha

Lots of great tips as usual! Always enjoyable! Yay! A nice rare visit from the beloved Pinky! 💜🐈⬛

Great videos, however, didn’t appreciate the time the cat took. time
Thanks
@@rosemariebreitenstein1284 I like the cat! This is part of life if one has a pet in the household. The pet is family.
I have been watching The Last Homely House RUclips videos and her cats do the same as yours. I love it!
Oh my gosh! You just improved my ability to transfer by light years!
That much Frances?! :)

I really love your videos, they are simply to follow and so relaxing 😌
Wonderful explanation. Thanks for sharing this valuable information. And your cat is so cute. Lots of love for her.
Epic ! Just perfect as always. You are so talented in your teaching which brings untold joy to us learners. Thankyou Sarah for all you do for us ☺️
Your videos have been a lifesaver since starting my embroidery journey! Thank you for sharing your wisdom! ❤

friction pens as in the name brand pens or a completely different thing?

I love your 'Pinky' kitty cat! Thank you for making these informative videos for us! 😄

She was a rescue so she does get a bit spoilt!
