    Excellent cover, I think I prefer this song over most other AaL songs. Two questions:
    1.) What are your absolute favorite Sabian cymbals?
    2.) Would you consider covering a Coheed and Cambria song? A lot of the Willing Well songs have some good challenges in them and a lot of Coheed songs have a great deal of groove, Evagria the Faithful or The Hard Sell possibly.

    • @johnkew
      @johnkew  9 лет назад

      Ethan Hamilton Tough question on the Sabian cymbals. I would have to say that, of the Paragon line, the ride and 19-inch china are my favs. Of the crashes, the 18-inch Evo is my fav. Of the hi-hats, the Evo is probably also my favorite.

    • @sharrythedave4758

    Question for drummers:
    Does Matt do the constant ghost notes just because it sounds really good and rhythmic or does he do it to help keep time in AAL's crazy time signatures?

    • @firkinja
      @firkinja 5 лет назад

      Personally, I do it for the latter, but being a Berklee graduate, he’s probably done a shit ton of shed drumming where they kinda do it for both reasons

  • @thomasdameron390
    @thomasdameron390 9 лет назад

    Do you think you could cover The Spirit of Radio by Rush? I have seen any covers that are 100% accurate, since a lot of people miss the ghost notes in it, and I think you'd really like playing it, although it's not your normal style.

  • @KOKUAFILMSHAWAII
    @KOKUAFILMSHAWAII 9 лет назад

    Just a thought J, It looks like you are trying to figure out a background - my idea.....green screen then shoot your mountains or some cloud scenes and run those in the background - no...I got it go to the peak of a mountain and film in the best direction a 30 minute clip of the clouds going by then place yourself and your kit on the peak! see it??

    • @johnkew
      @johnkew  9 лет назад +2

      KOKUA FILMS HAWAII Hey Boda, that mountain backdrop would be cool, but I'd rather shoot on location. There's a fantastic rock formation way out in the middle of Wyoming that I've got my eyes on. But it would require all kinds of permits and generators.
      The problem with GoPro cameras is that they are SO wide-angle, that you get a perspective of everything in the room. I'm also planning a home studio in the basement of the home we're moving into soon. It'll be a complete black box.

    great cover as usual. heard this song recently. very accurate cover.
    i noticed a slight change in the camerawork. some handheld. the oscillating camera was also slowed down. Some new angles incorporated. Overall, this video looks better.

    • @johnkew
      @johnkew  9 лет назад

      Sitanshu Nandan Good eye - one of the band mates who shares the studio was kind enough to do some hand-held filming on this one. And the motorized tripod mount batteries were low, so the rotation was slow, which I think suits this song better.
      In terms of frame rate, I personally prefer the cinematic look over a high frame rate. If you look at some of my older videos, I used higher frame rates, but to me it gives a soap opera effect.

    • @SitanshuNandanTheStansho
      @SitanshuNandanTheStansho 9 лет назад

      Hmm.. Parabola does have a higher frame rate. Maybe u are right. The cinematic look is more suitable for your videos

    Great stuff man it's been awhile since I've watched your videos, but they're still incredible. Have you ever listened to Hella? Especially their first album Hold Your Horse Is has some great tunes on it, at least worth checking out. I don't think it fits your style necessarily, but it's interesting nonetheless. Keep up the good work.

  • @AquaAnim
    @AquaAnim 9 лет назад

    Great musicianship! Your hand technique is very interesting care to explain?

    • @johnkew
      @johnkew  9 лет назад +1

      AquaAnim Thanks man - my grip is a strange hybrid of the power grip Neil Peart used back when he played his sticks backwards (when I was learning drums in the 80s). Some time in there, my fulcrum slipped from the first joint of my index finger to the second. Probably to compensate for holding too tight, and resulting finger fatigue. Since then, I've found it hard to switch from that habit, so my grip unconsciously fluctuates from German to French to American, depending on the dynamics of the song.

    • @AquaAnim
      @AquaAnim 9 лет назад

      johnkew Gotcha awesome, even saw were the stick was like upside down in your hand for ghost notes, really awesome.

  • @cscrignaro
    @cscrignaro 9 лет назад

    Good job on the cover, but it is hard to tell your drums from the song. I'd suggest lowering the song by 4db or so.

    • @johnkew
      @johnkew  9 лет назад +2

      Carlo Scrignaro This was a tough song to mix, because the drums in the original are so loud. I tried lowering the song in my mix, but to me it ruined the low-key vibe and my drums drowned out the guitars.
