Thank you for sharing your very straightforward how-to video. Just ordered replacement knobs from Suncoast for my sticky 997.2 GT3 knobs. Ironically, I think the radio has only been turned on a couple times in the 12 years we've owned. Once when we took delivery at the dealership and a couple times during routine service. Who needs a radio when you have a Mezger symphony behind you! 😊
It just occurred to me to buy replacements. Kind of pricey but I'm tired of the sticky knobs. I've used a few solvents and cleaners and nothing has helped. Perfect video, you've helped me out. Thanks!
@@bobbygfl your're welcome; yeah the cleaning stuff are a hot mess, and only temporal at best to say the least, unless you plans on buffing it regularly. The spray cans take up storage space, and is best used in shop, where the shop can use it up on multiple vehicles until used up(else rest is wasted). Then you have to keep car away from uv rays as much as possible. The complications goes on and on; So yeah story short, it makes a tone of sense to get a new one.
Mine didn’t come off so easy. The old button came out but the shaft portion of the old button was still stuck on the pcm. I basically had to break them off so that the new buttons could slide back over the original shaft. 5 extra minutes of work but a little scary.
Denatured alcohol will clean your old knobs. Good video on the swap but I cleaned mine with alcohol. Good as new and the $100 is still in my pocket instead of Suncoast.
One more bump on the denatured alcohol - I used 70% isopropyl and they came out like new as well. Unfortunately, I also snapped one of the knobs from the shaft, taking them off, so I may need to buy the new ones anyway. Would recommend trying to clean them while still on the car if anyone's reading this, using a cotton bud and light pressure so it doesn't drip. Few times around with a light scrub seemed to do it.
Thanks for the run through on changing out the knobs. Mine aren't sticky yet but when they get there I'll be confident in knowing how much force may be required. I think that's always the question when pulling parts apart anywhere on the car. How difficult should this be to remove and how difficult will it be to reinstall. Thanks!
I just pulled mine off, '14 Cayman S. The left one broke, I JB Welded it, let's see what happens. Here's the strange thing: I was planning on doing the Plasti-Dip thing, so I took the gummy knobs into my kitchen and used a paper towel to try to remove the sticky stuff and guess what? IT CAME OFF! I'm serious, I was able to remove all the sticky crap with several paper towels. I then used Dawn dish detergent to clean the knob, and now I have a pair of black non-sticky knobs! I will say now that I know why Porsche had the knobs coated with [inferior grade] rubber: These are terribly cheap feeling! The knob without the rubber feels like the cheapest plastic you can imagine. This is cost cutting. And this...In a car that originally sold for over $76,000. Seriously? This is the kind of thing you find in a Chever-lay, not something you are supposed to find in a PORSCHE!
I agree with you, but have some pretty expensive, expensive fishing reels that have the same problem with the rubber handles. I think this is just something that happens overtime. If you want a softer feel, the alternative is a hard knob that would likely last much longer.
@@bobbygfl Interesting, I wasn't aware that this stuff was used on fishing reels. These are things that need to be gripped hard; I guess you have figured out a way to restore the rubbery grip?
A light sanding with 1000 grit sandpaper removes the sticky and exposes the new rubber underneath. That worked. However, in every case, I have just hunted through eBay to find replacement reel handles.
I'm surprised you being a Porsche owner didn't know that the radio turns on without a key. All VW, Audi, Porsche cars have been this way since day one. Even old VW beetles radios did this
Thanks for the comment and the feedback! They were hard to remove. I didn’t get the sense that I was going to break the unit. However, once you gain the perspective of how hard it is to pop them off and that is the only way to get them off, you will feel confident in fixing it yourself. Of course, if you have the means the dealer would be happy to pull on them just as hard and charge you significantly more than doing it yourself.!

Thanks!! I’m the same. Never play it. Engine is music enough!
958 cayenne S with full fabspeed exhaust here. That's all the music I need but alas, my knobs are sticky.

Perfect video, you've helped me out. Thanks!
That’s awesome thanks for the comment!
Thank you so much for this video, it helped me avoid loosing a lot of money to replace mine, truly appreciated.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the video. Same problem on my 996tt, so I'm thinking about replacing the knobs also.
Glad it helped! Easy!
Love your
videos. Just got a 2019 991.2 S cab and you've been super helpful!
Thank you I appreciate that. I have a few future videos planned just busy doing other things!
Thank you for this. I am doing my knobs this evening!
Thanks! Hope it goes well. I had an anxiety pulling them off.
Thank you !!!! One of mine is so freaking sticky that I hate to touch.. call me lazy ... great little things to know sir !!
Chauncey Leagones awesome! Very easy to replace.
Thanks for the tutorial! I just did mine, and the radio came on- never knew, haha! Thanks again!
Glad I could help!
Nice video, answers a lot of questions. Easy peasy
Thank you!
Nice and thanks, for a great demonstration, it makes sense to get a new one; well, at least the savings is in the installation. Well done.
Becky Nwokenkwo thank you! So glad I just replaced them rather than messing with cleaners and stuff.

@@beckynwokenkwo1390 New $100 knobs are going to get sticky in a "hot" year or two especially in hot climates.

I bet I was scared. Pulling them off the way I did hopefully no damage.
Just got the replacements... thank you!!
Awesome! Thanks!!
Thx for explaining h2 upgrade the Porsche knops.
Thanks!

John thanks! Agreed. That line between force and broken is always suck a dilemma!!
Great, informative video. I’m going out to my garage now to do the same :)
Thanks!
What is the part no? Thanks.
Here’s a link to the part. www.suncoastparts.com/product/PK991RK.html

Long video for 30 seconds of remove by pulling and insert new ones but can easily clean sticky stuff with a lemon solution/ degreaser.
Thanks. The sticky just returns. Really no actual remedy other than replacing them.

Had no idea! Learned something new. Thanks!
How long will it stay on?
Sitting barefoot in your 991 -> priceless…
Georg Lutz hahaha. Nothing better!
I paid $14.95 on Amazon for a set of two.
Nice!
Pop them off. Soak them in a small container of vinegar, overnight, rinse, and reinstall.
Thanks. New is still better. The rubber is deteriorating.
Pricey?! Nooooo.. I just got a quote from the dealer for my 2019 718 for $360 for a pair. Makes $100 sound CHEAP :)
I had the same experience with the battery. It was like $300 to buy the battery and $1000 to have it put in crazy.
If you have a 997 do not try this. The knob will not come off! Read this rennlist.com/forums/rennlist.com/forums/showthread.php?page=2&t=881081
Great tip. Thanks for the comment.
that was funny!!
steelydan133 thanks!
really Bobby? A video on replacing knobs :) LOL
Ian D I was stressing a bit. When you look it up people say they are very difficult to get off. Not so much.
This video gives a false hope they are extremely hard to move and can damage your head unit. Plus the video is far too long and boring

I can't get mine off either. Busted one already. Real crap that rhis happens on a pirsche. This is Nissan level stuff.
