Good or bad, right or wrong I don't think the world would be aware of Arnold or Lou if it wasn't for the resentment they both felt for their father's. The resentment fueled their drive to become something special, to prove I'm better than my father.
I remember Malcom Gladwell wrote about studies on the absent father/eminent orphan phenomenon in his book David and Goliath. The theory suggests that many highly successful individuals, particularly in the realm of business and entrepreneurship, come from families with a "hole" in their upbringing, such as the absence of a father figure. Gladwell argues that this "hole" or "eminent orphan" status allows individuals to develop a strong sense of autonomy and drive, as they are not held back by the expectations or influence of a strong father figure. He suggests that this can be an important factor in their ability to take risks and achieve success. Maybe in a way, this worked similarly in Lou and Arnold's situation as I know it has in many bodybuilders driven to succeed. Thanks for commenting Stefanos

@Carved Outta Stone That is 100% correct. I once saw a video that had interviews with Arnold Schwarzenegger and his friend Sven Ole Thorsen. A Dolph Lundgren interview was also shown. All 3 men believed the strained relationships they had with their fathers was the primary motivator for their success. I believe Arnold in particular mentioned, had he been closer with his father and his brother Meinhard not been favoured over him, he would not have been nearly as driven to be successful and accomplish what he has accomplished. Dolph Lungren in recent years has opened up about his abusive father. Most notably on the TED Talks platform. It was a great talk, I highly recommend it. It goes to show you how important upbringing is and how it molds a person for better or worse. I do believe, however, an individual's choices and personality ultimately decide who they become.

It's great he steered it into a positive. His brother let the upbringing destroy him, but he allowed it to become his fuel. I bet you he sees his father in his dreams and subconscious every day. It's the link between so many great men's lives - the absent or abusive father
Here's something from the "take it for what it is department". Arnold later recanted on the story of his Father's funeral, stating that it had been a story he took from a French bodybuilder. This was to build his persona and the stress the discipline of champions. He said his father didn't die before a contest and that he had attended the funeral of his father. He also stated that his father attended the 1972 Olympia and died later that year. The 1972 Olympia was held in October 1972. His father's death has been recorded as December 13th, 1972, which supports Arnold's claim.
So there's no pics of proud father and son at the 72 Olympia win that Gustav "supposedly" attended? Then the psychic Arnold hung around austria for a few months after knowing his father was going to die of stroke so he could attend the funeral....exactly the same as he DIDN'T do with his brother meinhard the year before. Nahhh, sounds like a reach to me. Why did Arnold's story evolve again in his most recent documentary release? The guy tells more lies than Pinocchio
Explains the indivdual with clear narcissistic traits Schwarzenegger became as an adult. Narcissists are formed by either abuse or excessive praise during their formative years. A genetic factor must be present as well.
The nature/nurture argument regarding how people's personalities unfold over their time is fascinating. When I study Arnold's life, the multiplicity of influences makes his life story even more mind blowing. Thanks for commenting Gunter 😊
The SS-Guy (1:10) in the video in the black uniform isn't Schwarzenegger's dad, but Otto Wächter, an austrian SS-Lieutenant-General, who was head of the police in Austria in the third Reich. Arnolds father served in the Feldgendarmerie as well as SA as a master sgt, as far as I know and is seen for instance at 1:35 in his Wehrmacht (not SS) uniform.
Good pickup - searching for pics of Gustav turned up quite a few references to Wächter's - now of which (thanks to you), I know is a misattribution. (When I found them I thought, "Geez, Arnold's dad cut a very dashing figure in those photos). @@carvedouttastone Never mind that records show that Gustov Died December 13 1972 and the 1972 Mr. Olympia Competition took place in October 1972 in Essen West Germany. You know that in 1972 there was an EAST and WEST Germany? He confessed to missing his Brothers Meinhard’s funeral. Meinhard died May 1971 and Arnold was in the middle of prepping for the Mr. Olympia that would take place in September of that year in France. He said this after he told the truth about his Father’s funeral. He said in 2009 even though he was in his second and final term as Governor of California.
So which excuse is it then? He took the story from a boxer/bodybuilder as he stated before? Or he deliberately skipped the funeral of two family members because a male beauty contest ranked higher than honouring their memories. Not sure what EAST and WEST Germany have to do with anything, but ok.
And never mind the fact his own Gf, who was the closest person to him during those years said he had no interest returning home to his father's funeral, somehow carries less weight than some random guy's assertion to the contrary on RUclips, but again, ok.
@@carvedouttastone I never said he skipped the funeral of two family members. I said he skipped his brothers. Arnold has clarified this in many interviews. As far as steeling the story about skipping the father’s funeral, he has been saying this at least since the 25th anniversary of Pumping Iron in 2002. In 2002 (before Arnold Entered politics) HBO did a Pumping Iron 25th anniversary special on the making of pumping iron and they did a making of the making of where Arnold says he stole the story of a body builder skipping his father’s funeral. Hey Jordan - it's highly probable in my opinion that he skipped his dad's funeral deliberately based on his long time girlfriend's statement along with the fact that he recounted three different excuses. His dad also treated him badly, so I don't think he was rushing home to see his funeral. The short I made is based on a story in Arnold's biography called Fantastic. I can't find the original footage so I used Arnold's game show appearance on the dating show as it was around the same time and the expressions fit the scene lol. Haha creative license on my part Thanks for commenting 😊
@@carvedouttastone Arnold's Autobiography "Total Recall" mentions that he couldn't make it to his father's funeral because he was competing in New York when news of his fathers death was sent to him. Since he was competing and the call was to his apartment Franco Columbo was told instead of Arnold and Franco didn't have the heart to tell Arnold until he made it back to California. Which by that time it was to late for Arnold to get to the Funeral in time. He missed his brother Meinhard's funeral due to needing knee surgery after an accident during an exhibition/promotion job for Joe Weider's supplement company. I'm pretty sure he says he stole the story about missing funerals in Pumping Iron in the follow up about the original doc but Idk if the book was published before or after the second doc came out.
Arnold says lots of things. Many of them lies. Just because it's in a book doesn't make it real. His book shouldn't have been called Total Recall - he should have called it True Lies instead. Arnold is a politician first and foremost. He makes up lots of stuff to create illusions reflecting he wants people to think of him. He's the master of misdirection. He's pathological, lol Thanks for commenting Equeleto
Getting tired of repeating this same answer that was clearly qualified in the video. He provided three different excuses for the same accusation. Which one are you going to choose? Good point. Particularly with Lou's dad. He seemed a bit jealous of Lou - operating vicariously through his son for something he couldn't achieve himself. Lou's loss represented HIS loss. And strangely, by all accounts Matty Ferrigno was pretty much in love with Arnold himself.

The story of Arnold not attending his fathers is false. Arnold has said a lot of things he did and said in Pumping Iron was made up to make the move more popular . If it wasn’t done he said it would have been boring . I saw Interview with Arnold himself saying the story about not attending his fathers funeral was not true. He did go to the funeral . Stories like that were difficult to prove as false back in the pre-internet days, and back in those days, who would have guessed that such a thing was going to be possible in less than twenty years? Lying, or at very least, hyperbole are easily proven now.

@@carvedouttastone I'm not saying I'm an expert, but if you look it up, it says on google that the story is from another bodybuilder that they added for dramatic effect. to your credit, that could still serve as evidence to support your claim, proving that not only is it Arnold and Lou who have problems with their fathers, but bodybuilders as a whole. and I've only done surface level research into this, probably not as much as you, but I thought this is something someone could easily get wrong, it being one of the more notable elements of the particular interview the clip comes from, and being a common misconception among people who've watched the movie.

Here look for yourself ruclips.net/video/MaTw-GjFtVo/видео.html.
Now I understand your a fan of Arnold, a Fan of Pumping Iron and a person who enjoys making these videos. Great!
Don’t get bent out of shape when people inform you of facts you may have missed. Nobody intended it maliciously. I don’t expect you to have even been alive in 2002 when the video of the link I posted was aired, let alone know what it contained. Finaly if yo want to believe your presentation is still factual then fine. It is your right to believe whatever you want to believe, even if other people have presented a mountain of facts and evidence to the contrary. Have a nice day and keep up the video making, or as the kids say CONTEN
Very insightful videos mate
Thanks for that comment and positive feedback mate. Hope you stay watching for more to come. Aussie?
@Carved Outta Stone sure am mate. And I'm about 5 videos deep! Good on ya mate 👏

In more ways than one.
Amazing video bro! This must have taken a lot of work… tell me, how many hours you worked for this?
Interesting insights 👍💪
Hey Cymro65. Thanks for watching. Anything stand out in the video particularly?
another insightful video, thank you. some questions. so arnold really DID miss his fathers funeral? i had heard him say he stole that story from another body builder. and then on the dating game short, right after i watched it, i looked it up and watched on youtube & there was none of that. can you give more of the backstory on these two?
Hey Jordan - it's highly probable in my opinion that he skipped his dad's funeral deliberately based on his long time girlfriend's statement along with the fact that he recounted three different excuses. His dad also treated him badly, so I don't think he was rushing home to see his funeral.
The short I made is based on a story in Arnold's biography called Fantastic. I can't find the original footage so I used Arnold's game show appearance on the dating show as it was around the same time and the expressions fit the scene lol. Haha creative license on my part
Thanks for commenting 😊
Oh, it wasn’t on the dating game, it was something else. Got it. I’d love to see whatever that was, sounded hilarious
I wonder if there's a way to dig into some of this archive TV footage. Would love to unearth some of these gems
Like the time he said his bricklaying business was called "Pumping Bricks" - no it wasn't -Butler and Gaines said the terminology wasn't even in use when he was doing that...just little things like that - he's a bullshitter? He's pathological, lol
Thanks for commenting Equeleto
This is a great video, I’m sure they weren’t the best dads, but they meant the best and their sons turned out to be legends
Great point Matthew. Thanks for the feedback on the video
What happened to the new video you just uploaded? It was there, then I couldn't watch it and then it was gone
Which video mate? The last one uploaded was the Tom Platz short a couple of days ago.
4:20 arnold have said multiple times that this was a lie. It was something he heard from some other bodybuilder and said just to provoke people
Getting tired of repeating this same answer that was clearly qualified in the video. He provided three different excuses for the same accusation. Which one are you going to choose? His own long time gf said he had no interest in returning to the funeral. He's ad libbed the "bodybuilder story) - sometimes it's attributed to a boxer as damage control for the criticism he received for such a comment
Is this part 2 does not say in the heading...
Oops. Yes, good catch. Updated. Thanks for letting me know
My dad abandoned me i got huge in prison

Hey Hong. Anything in particular stand out? Thanks for commenting 🙂
@@carvedouttastone I think I've watched pumping Iron a couple of times and hear some commentary about it, but I never paid attention to the Parenting issues part of it, even though it was very apparent in the documentary, very interesting to hear you point out about it. I think within the psyche none of these abusive fathers wanted to see their son bigger and stronger than they are.
Good point. Particularly with Lou's dad. He seemed a bit jealous of Lou - operating vicariously through his son for something he couldn't achieve himself. Lou's loss represented HIS loss. And strangely, by all accounts Matty Ferrigno was pretty much in love with Arnold himself.
@@carvedouttastone what's the channel's next video/project on the horizon?
Matty Ferrigno was one of the absolute worst fathers in history
That was pretty rough words he said to Lou at the contest. Lou could have been a great champ, but he walked away after that
@@carvedouttastone agreed 👍. If Louie had kept up with competitive bodybuilding, he could have been a multiple Mr. O particularly between 1976 to 1983, then Lee Haney would have ended his reign in 84. My favorite Ferrigno physique where he exhibited nice muscle maturity was his Hercules 1983 physique. That physique would have potentially won the Mr. O that year also. What do you think
@@cebukid70 I think if he kept going, he could have been the next Weider golden boy because he was definitely the heir apparent to Arnold. If he did the hulk and competed, he would have been a shoo-in on Hollywood credibility alone to win a few titles
@@carvedouttastoneLou would have owned bodybuilding in the 1980’s had he continued and had the right trainers and motivation.
Patrick Schwarzenegger should have looked more athletic in _Gen V_
The story of Arnold not attending his fathers is false. Arnold has said a lot of things he did and said in Pumping Iron was made up to make the move more popular . If it wasn’t done he said it would have been boring . I saw Interview with Arnold himself saying the story about not attending his fathers funeral was not true. He did go to the funeral . It was made up as a lot of stories in the move was factitious. Was used to make the movie more exciting and controversial for ratings. This interview I’m sure you can find. So before putting something like this out check every single so called fact. A lot of what you say is true per Arnold but things from the movie a lot was just made up Arnold made a lot up. He admits it was a docudrama . If not it would be boring
Stories like that were difficult to prove as false back in the pre-internet days, and back in those days, who would have guessed that such a thing was going to be possible in less than twenty years? Lying, or at very least, hyperbole are easily proven now.
His dad didn't die he stole that from another bodybuilder
Did you watch the video? His girl friend clearly stated he had no interest in going back to the funeral. He also recounted 3 different excuses - so which version of his bullshit do you want to choose from?
Arnold's dad was a Nazi? ... Just goes to show that sometimes the apple does fall from the tree.
Wait until my next video....Thanks for watching again Chuck
@@carvedouttastone No problemo.
Yes he was a based
The story of Arnold not going to his fathers funeral is not true
@@lukedielschneider3729 do you think I might have researched that Mr Expert?
@@carvedouttastone I'm not saying I'm an expert, but if you look it up, it says on google that the story is from another bodybuilder that they added for dramatic effect. to your credit, that could still serve as evidence to support your claim, proving that not only is it Arnold and Lou who have problems with their fathers, but bodybuilders as a whole. and I've only done surface level research into this, probably not as much as you, but I thought this is something someone could easily get wrong, it being one of the more notable elements of the particular interview the clip comes from, and being a common misconception among people who've watched the movie.
@@lukedielschneider3729 believe me - I've done the research and asked the questions behind the scenes. I dont flippantly make content based on Wikipedia articles or media training based quotes from what Arnold tells people he wants to hear
Arnold unfortunately ruined natural bodybuilding forever
All sounds very fascistic.
Some truth to that statement. Fascist leaders have historically loved co-opting fitness as a symbol for national strength and unification.
All you guys are gay ones?
That's why alot of bodybulders in the golden era were homosexuals. Daddy issues.
That is amazingly ignorant.
Bro I love your videos but the titles are getting very confusing, why do you have 2 different mini series called pumping iron with both having 2 or more parts? It's not clear at first glance to which video is this a part 2 to.
Hey Georgi - Yes, my girl was saying to simplify it and do away with the new video parts 1/2/3/ etc. I initially had these as one long video, but decided to split them into themes. The masculinity series made sense with the naming convention, but yeah you're right. I'll just keep these new ones as stand-alone titles. Thanks for commenting mate.
