Love the insights about how fitness and physique were originally meant to be viewed and developed in a multifaceted manner. The importance of not just physical strength but moral strength and emotional and mental fortitude as a whole “fit” person. I also liked the original emphasis on moderation as well since one of the flaws of the modern fitness world is indeed vanity. However, I do think fitness and physique have a good sub-culture now despite the many flaws within the larger culture. I mean everybody knows of at least one person at their gym who has a fantastic physique but is utterly messed up in the other aspects of their lives. And we all know the person who is weak and unhealthy as all get out but they say they won’t set foot in the gym for fear of “vanity”. Health is wealth. Great first video! Pumping Iron is truly a groundbreaking film even it must now be looked upon as such in a 'warts and all' kind of way. Despite its flaws, it is a fascinating document. One thing that I remember reading in a book about Arnold is that, despite the fact that the group of bodybuilders featured in Pumping Iron came together in the late-60's in California and had known one another for several years at the time that the film was made; they were all decidedly more conservative than the average young male in California during that period. Gold's Gym and Vince's Gym both had an unspoken "Hippies Need Not Apply" policy. It is such a stark contrast to our world today in which everyone has to hold forth about politics even if they clearly know next to nothing about it. This Age of Social Media has taken the noisy currents outside and both brought them inside as well as made them deafening.
