    What pissed off competitors like Mike mentzer in the 80 olympia, was how arnold was in only about 80% of the shape he was in at the 75 olympia, and still looked better than all of the 1980 competitors. Arnold won't admit it here but part of reason he competed was to put Mike mentzer in his place. Mentzer was the huge favorite to win that year. Arnold was not a fan of the mentzer look and had made comments about how mentzers abs and how his gut would hang out during competition. They even got into a heated argument backstage at the show and almost came to blows. Even at only 80% of shape he was in at 75 olympia, Arnold was still better than any of the competitors at the 80 0.

      Absolutely;)

    • @artistamisto

      That backstage story was that Arnold had insulted Boyer Coe and then Mentzer confronted him about it. That's the famous photo of Arnold casually sitting while Mentzer is pointing at him angrily from 7 feet away while Ben Weider comes in attempting to calm things down. It wasn't to do with those 2 personally, although by that time Mentzer had it with Arnold's attitude. I don't know that competing was to put him in his place but if partially true than you go Arnold.

    • @markhollis7219
      @markhollis7219 3 года назад +1

      @@artistamisto ya I still have the original muscle and fitness magazine, with those pics of Arnold sitting down with mentzer pointing his finger at him. Back then it was actually muscle builder magazine, before it became muscle and fitness. Arnold had made negative comments in the past about boyer coes lack of abs and mentzers gut hanging out and that that's why they will never win an olympia. He was right tho. I read years ago that Arnold had told Joe weider that he wanted to put mentzer and other bodybuilders in their place and to prove to them that he could still beat all of them. Zane had won it the last 3 years and arnold didn't think zane deserved the title either due to his lack of size.

      I’m a massive fan of Arnold, but I’ve GOT to disagree with you there. Arnold’s arms and chest were utterly phenomenal as usual, but his legs were lacklustre and his back didn’t have the mass he used to rock and the same with his shoulders. Frank Zane also had better conditioning there and Mentzer was also on top form along with greats like Tom Platz. Arnold is STILL the greatest bodybuilder of all time in my estimation, but he did NOT deserve to win in the 1980 Mr Olympia.

    Friends/Athletes: Am a novice historian of Schwarzenegger. Was the 1980 Olympia controversy real? Yes. Was the contest cut and dried with a clear winner? No. Part of the reason Arnold entered the 1980 may have been because of his idol, Reg Park, (and some other, I’ll posit , smaller reasons) who entered an earlier competition to the surprise of Arnold about a decade earlier. Arnold never talked much about his appearance in the event and this appears to be a rare Q&A about the 1980 Olympia which even I never saw before.

    • @johnf.kennedy7339
      @johnf.kennedy7339 3 года назад +1

      @TheBladerunner1975 The thing was he only trained 4-6 weeks in total for this competition when 3-6 months what was probably needed for muscle memory to kick in. I have a large photo I keep displayed as I respond to this. Abs are good. Shoulder dirth isn’t bad with good striations all around. Bicep has a good peek, but not as high as his earlier wins. The problem may have been where the others placed that year, and not Arnold’s own win. (I just considered this).

    He wasn't happy about winning because he was being heavily booed. He tried to ignore the boos, but could not. He knew he didn't deserve it and he was screaming at Maria to leave with him and get out of there. A few weeks later he was lamenting it and said "It doesn't matter. Eventually people will forget and I will be 7 time Mr Olympia"
    He made a mistake by entering and even bigger one winning. It really set bodybuilding back. It was being filmed for network TV, but never shown because it was obviously fixed. Network TV never filmed a Mr Olympia again.
    I love Arnold, but he is hardly infallible.
