Beyond these albuns you have mentioned we can also say Risk, The world needs a hero as another two albums in which his voice was sounding really cool considering Mustaine's limitations and skills. For the kind of work he does his voice matches really good for me. If we had a Michael Kiske singing Mustaine's songs that would be a shit garbage. The same when it comes to Ozzy's stuffs. They are all so unique that no cover fits well.

Very good comment , like I use to do when I was young , singing wasp with saliva in my throat to obtain that hoarse tremolo , and then I sung Helloween ....done this everyday ,I was 16...18 years old , lost my voice completely ,and took some shots with warfarine and oxicumarine in my triceps and slowly I was able to talk first for about 10...12 minutes and then better. My musical voice is fucked up ever since . I can sing some country shit but my vocal chords were permanently damaged
I think it was neck surgery actually. It was the one he had before the Big 4 shows in 2010 (that's why he was wearing a neck brace). After that they tuned down to D standard (they had used Eb/E-Flat since 1994). I think he said that he can't move his head like before, so that probably made it more difficult for him to reach certain registers after that.
@Nghilifa Yes, he's said that metal neck plate presses against his vocal chords causing pain when singing. I hear their current bassist has been helping him like a vocal coach, so I wonder if a technique could be developed to work around that, restore that passage into his upper vocal register. (Not to sing as high as in the 90s, but for a well rounded range within D Standard tuning.)
Dave isn't growling or other current popular harsh vocals. His attitude is different. He's not about being brutal. He's about being snarky and/or nasty and pissed off. He uses more a snarl that a growl. He sings less like a metal monster and more like a dude slowly whispering into the ear of his enemy as he slowly twists a dagger in his belly. He has more of that attitude as well.
I became fond of his singing style because it was--at least for myself--versatile: compressed, yet able to attain high notes, and just like what other comments have stated, there is a snarl present. "Holy Wars" was the very first song I listened to when I initially decided to explore their music, and after listening to it, I thought, "his singing reminds me of Geddy Lee from Rush".
He's far from being technically impressive, but he has a lot of feel in his vocals and is quite unique. Better than a thousand sound alike singers out there
Hell yes. Doing Mustaine impressions at karaoke, snarling through Symphony of Destruction, combining that with his high notes at the end of Peace Sells, then finding your vocal technique vids... That was the direct path to extending my vocal range and endurance. 👌
There is a big difference between a singer and a vocalist. Mustaine is a vocalist. And what he does totally fits with the Megadeth sound and attitude. It's purely for Megadeth. He could never play in a sports bar cover band. And Megadeth could never get away with hiring a singer.
Besides having a "love it or hate it" type of voice, he had a really interesting thing going on with his technique in the 90's!! Glad you're doing a video on him :)

Well for all these years I wanted to be able to explain what's so good in Dave's voice even though many consider it to sound amateurish, but this video explains a lot. And it goes so well with the sound of Megadeth, it's insane. Tornado of Souls is one of my favorite songs ever, and I always considered not only that legendary solo to be the main ingredient of the song, but also Dave's singing as well. They complement each other flawlessly, in my opinion.
I love that sound. It's quite relaxing...i was tense and that didn't hurt me...i think I want to sing in a more dark way(like Chris Cornell for instance) but this bright really make a freedom way to more adjustments in the pop rock sound that I'm searching for. Like this singer brings it more darker in other parts. That as a girl I find it risk to attempt but with the right teaching of how things works really help to damage less.

So maybe there's also a technique he can discover that works around those health issues without too much discomfort? (Like not singing as high as in the 90s, but regaining nice control over the higher notes of Holy Wars or Tornado of Souls in their modern D Standard tuning.)

I feel like what Dave did for many years was really unhealthy and the reflects on his performances in the late 2000's and onwards. He's definitely one of my biggest musical influences but there's no denying his voice has been thrashed for years.
1. Have an untreated anger problem. 2. Read the lyrics to "Burning Bridges," realize that this how you have lived your life. 3. Hold a decades long grudge against a more successful friend. This seems to be Mustaine's formula for vocals. Megadeth is built around Mustaine's vocals; nothing else would fit properly.

ya man this is it, hard to get this darker deeper chestier timbre. Maybe it has to do with resonance. If you open your body inside, in a way to have a bigger box, bassier overtones will ring 'cuz of the bigger box you have inside. I heard teachers say that, maybe even Chris... but it is really hard to get to... and there must be other secrets too...
You need to listen to Jonny Craig asap! Dude's the best damn vocalist I ever heard. I really wanna know how he does what he does. I'd suggest "What I'd Give To Be Australian" off his solo album or "Blue Dream" from Dance Gavin Dance. Even his live performances are perfect
I have a question. How does a band determine what standard key they sing in? I know Dave Mustaine can sing both deeper and higher than D standard. For me D3 is close to the bottom of my range and is the deepest I can sing with any loudness. I can hit C3 but it's still a little quiet but C#3 is getting louder. My highest note is not impressive as an A4 and is a bit unusual for a female like me to not be able to hit high notes without cracking. I used to sing along with male vocalists in the past and would actually get angry and jealous when me, a teenaged girl couldn't hit the high notes Geoff Tate or Bruce Dickinson could. I first was put in the tenor section in choir but then moved to the alto section where I still had difficulty with some of the highs. The cool thing is that many other female tenors like me exist. We find it amusing with the claim that the contralto voice is the least common one. Well female tenor is the same range as the male tenor one so what does it all actually mean? BTW, thank you for this video. I'm subscribing to your channel.
I don't think most bands decide a standard key to sing in, they just write whatever sounds nice and whatever fits their voice the best. While categorizing vocal range is beneficial from certain analytical perspective, i feel sometimes it takes away the freedom to explore songs and notes that you think are outside your "natural range" With proper training, most people's vocal range can extend to be much wider then they think their limit is.

Instead of those two songs, you should listen to any of the tracks from Youthanasia, they are far the best from vocal standpoint and they didn't got any credit for it..
Sounded annoying for me when i was just getting into the band but then started to like his voice. He was not faking it unlike other vocalist who just really want to sound good and utilizing techniques to not trash their voice which is also good. But then again he kinda lost his voice maybe because of that. Dave's voice sounds true, emotionally onpoint like when he wants to enunciate a message of a song, it's just straight forward.

Hey, Chris! Can you do a video explaining singing high but maintaining low end, like Ian Astbury, Danzig, Jay Buchanan? They go up there but it sounds really chesty. That's kind of a mystery to me and I need some guidance on that.
ya man this is it, hard to get this darker deeper chestier timbre. Maybe it has to do with resonance. If you open your body inside, in a way to have a bigger box, bassier overtones will ring 'cuz of the bigger box you have inside. I heard teachers say that, maybe even Chris... but it is really hard to get to... and there must be other secrets too...

I have a question. How does a band determine what standard key they sing in?
I know Dave Mustaine can sing both deeper and higher than D standard. For me D3 is close to the bottom of my range and is the deepest I can sing with any loudness. I can hit C3 but it's still a little quiet but C#3 is getting louder. My highest note is not impressive as an A4 and is a bit unusual for a female like me to not be able to hit high notes without cracking. I used to sing along with male vocalists in the past and would actually get angry and jealous when me, a teenaged girl couldn't hit the high notes Geoff Tate or Bruce Dickinson could. I first was put in the tenor section in choir but then moved to the alto section where I still had difficulty with some of the highs.
The cool thing is that many other female tenors like me exist. We find it amusing with the claim that the contralto voice is the least common one. Well female tenor is the same range as the male tenor one so what does it all actually mean?

I don't think most bands decide a standard key to sing in, they just write whatever sounds nice and whatever fits their voice the best.
While categorizing vocal range is beneficial from certain analytical perspective, i feel sometimes it takes away the freedom to explore songs and notes that you think are outside your "natural range" With proper training, most people's vocal range can extend to be much wider then they think their limit is.
@@chrisliepeThank you for your response. Yeah that makes more sense, also with vocal categorization. I always felt that it was a rather silly concept due to people being able to extend their natural range if they wished it.
Instead of those two songs, you should listen to any of the tracks from Youthanasia, they are far the best from vocal standpoint and they didn't got any credit for it..

I believe Dave has said himself that on the early records he didn't know how to really sing and was just pushing and straining out the notes lol
Sounded annoying for me when i was just getting into the band but then started to like his voice. He was not faking it unlike other vocalist who just really want to sound good and utilizing techniques to not trash their voice which is also good. But then again he kinda lost his voice maybe because of that. Dave's voice sounds true, emotionally onpoint like when he wants to enunciate a message of a song, it's just straight forward.
