  • In this video, we take a closer look at Dave Mustaine and Megadeth, with the Isolated Vocals of A Tout Le Monde!
Megadeth - Dave Mustaine - A Tout Le Monde - Isolated Vocals - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Megadeth is one of "The Big Four" (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax). As many know, they were seemingly always in competition with Metallica.
This song is often interpreted to be about suicide, as the lyrics can be heard as a suicide note.
Introducing this song at a concert at Webster Hall in New York City on October 25, 1994, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine said: "In February of 1993, I decided I would try to kill myself with valium and I came real close to doing it... This is a song about that time period in my life when things were really f--ked up."
He later somewhat recanted and clarified the meaning: "It's not a suicide song. When people have a loved one that dies and they end on a bad note, they wish that they could say something to them, so this is a way for the deceased to say something to them before they go. It was my impression of what I would like to say to people if I had three seconds to do a soundbite before I died. I would say to the entire world, to all my friends, 'I love you all. Now I must go.' These are the last words I'll ever speak, and they'll set me free. I don't have to say I'm sorry, I don't have to say I'm going to miss you, I'll wait for you. I'll just say that I loved you all. Good, bad, indifferent, I loved you all."
However, on September 13, 2006, Kimveer Gill went on a shooting rampage at Dawson College in Montreal, eventually shooting himself. He was a Megadeth 's fan and mentioned this song on his blog, which prompted Dave Mustaine, who wrote the song, to make this statement the next day:
"Like everyone else, I am horrified and disgusted by the tragic events of yesterday. We will pray for everyone who has been hurt, and all the families that are suffering. 'A Tout Le Monde' is based on a dream I had, where my mother came back from heaven to say 'I love you.' It's about me talking to her again."
Mustaine added: "We don't write music that has any kind of suggestion about taking one's life. It is more like, 'Hey, we have a problem, let's be part of the solution."
MTV banned the video because they thought it promoted suicide. They did show it after some special comments were added, explaining how many kids commit suicide every year in the US. This message appeared at the end of the video: "Suicide is not an answer. Get help." The woman and child in the video are Mustaine's wife Pam and son, Justis.
Part of the chorus is in French:
    A tout le monde
    A tous les amis
    Je vous aime
    Je dois partir
    The translation:
    To all the world
    To all my friends
    I love you
    I have to leave
I believe this is a very powerful example of how influential artists can be and how careful we need to be with the power we wield as artists.
But Megadeth is far from the only band that has been blamed for suicides and other macabre fan enactments. The list of similar instances goes on and on, and no matter whether we admit it or not, our "Art" DOES have consequences...

To quote Wikipedia, and FYI - “The song's chorus, "à tout le monde, à tous mes amis, je vous aime, je dois partir", translated into English is, "to the whole world, to all my friends, I love you, I have to go",
And Dave himself said this isn’t a suicide song. Thanks for doing this one Ken, I have an even bigger appreciation for Dave now!

I do believe this is the very first Megadeth song you have analyzed ..
I have suggested this quite a while back when you began this series ..
And I do believe it was "A Tout Le Monde" as that would be the best song to do such analysis of Mustaine's vocals ..
Megadeth is certainly more "melodic" and dare I say -- talented than Metallica (lost them for the most part post A.J.F.A.)
"Poisoness Shadows" has a similar vibe ..
Thanks for finally doing this ..

Yeah I agree, Megadeth was always more melodic and the musical content far more colourful, particularly in the Friedman years (I am a guitarist). That being said, I still loved the early raw Metallica and ironically I still love it over their later and softer stuff. If I had to choose one or the other it would be Megadeth first but I loved both bands over the years even if my tastes have changed with age

I honestly want this song played at my funeral. I thought it was about suicide at first.. but when he says " Id love to stay with you." The 2nd verse says what the song is about “Moving on is a simple thing what it leaves behind is hard. You know the sleep and feel no more pain. And the living are scarred." Regardless of how someone died. Whether suicide or a long battle with an sickness. Suddenly being released is easy for you. (Moving on is a simple thing) But your loved ones you left behind need comforting. (The living are scarred) That's the point of the song. It's a message you are living behind.
And that “moving on is a simple thing" in the vocals always gives me chills."

You're confusing melody with what's commercially accepted as melody. Please listen to anything that Chris Poland plays on (with Megadeth's albums) and tell me that's less melodic than Metallica.
While I don't claim to be good at it, I've played the violin and was in music classes starting from age 10. The violin is primarily a melodic instrument. Commercially acceptable melody I would agree is true about Metallica. They have the formula on what the public would accept and they even have it down pat. Lars knew slower was easier for people to grasp and for music to be more memorable for them. That's why he was having Dave Mustaine slow down Mechanix when it became the Four Horsemen.

Post Metallica Black album I was fully in the Megadeth corner. Megadeth's songs for me hit home more than Metallica at that point. Metallica lost its grittiness and Megadeth was still singing about social injustices and political, economic, religious, and relationship issues. They were growing up with me. The band became more melodic but were still shredding and kicking ass. I love Dave Mustaine, and Junior's ( Dave Ellifson ) new band is good too!

I think James and Lars actually did Dave a huge favor by booting him out of Metallica; Megadeth would not even exist otherwise. He is a master songwriter and Rhythm guitar player but, specifically for the Youthanasia album, I find that his vocal lines are a lot better than the previous albums and I think technically he improved a lot. Now imagine that singing, while playing guitar at the same time.

There is a group of people who say that Dave can't sing but I disagree with all of them. Dave's voice is unique and he has a cool sound that fits Megadeth perfectly and i can't see anyone else singing for Megadeth other than Dave. His sound might not be something that anyone can get into on first listen. Dave's voice and style is something that grows on you after listening to it a lotta times, and so is Axl Rose's voice. For me personally, the very first time I listened to Megadeth was back when i was in 7th grade and being that young and naive I had the personality of not sticking with the opinion of the majority just because i thought it was "cool" and so i choose to listen to Megadeth over Metallica (nothing against Metallica I like both bands equally and they're both killer bands) and at first Dave's voice didn't sound pleasant to me but i didn't give much attention to it because i was more into the music, Marty's solos, Dave's riffs and Nick Menza's drums were killer and overtime Dave's voice grew on me and now i realise that what he did was so appropriate for their sound.

  • @NAlvazaz

I responded a few weeks back but have you heard Dave's vocals in concert after James LoMenzo has been giving Dave vocal coaching? I'm not sure how much further he could improve but he sounds great in comparison to last year even. Since my background in metal Geoff Tate, Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford (and hard rock for Klaus but some consider Scorpions metal?) and others, I ordinarily do listen to sophisticated vocalists so after listening to Megadeth's almost entire discography I'm confident that Dave Mustaine, while having a unique voice, can sing and has those melodic songs. "Back in the Day", Breadline, any of the hard rock songs on Risk... and slower metal songs on other albums are awesome.
There's also a show in Argentina where he did smooth + snarly vocals and you really can tell he can sing despite what the critics who can't sing themselves think (most keyboard warriors). Anyway, I'm glad i came across this video again. As for Dave, despite the spine plate causing issues with his vocals he's really been coming along. He's already sounded better than even last year. I would be interested to hear your opinion on his improvement from 2022 to 2024.
Before I forget...To contrast with a vocalist i don't like that would be Axl Rose who I've tried hard to get used to. "Sweet Child of Mine" is one I find that gets on my nerves. And James Hetfield? Except for him saying "yeah" way too much and more often than not he sings in a limited part of his range, i find I do like him too.

Aside from Marty's solo, which was amazing, I heard some familiar fret work that sounded like Michael Angelo Batio. Was he one of the shredders? BTW, you can more than hold your own with regards to shredding. "Give Me An Answer" is amazing as is "Gettin' Ready". For everyone who thinks Stryper was the king of Christian Metal... Sorry, we all missed the boat here. Shout blows them away. 🤟 Guess I'll be binge listening this weekend.

oh man I am glad you said that. I too think Megadeth is a little more melodic songy closer to poppy or whatever term you want to use but there music really does not always reflect the image people may have of them or the cover of the albums they are still definitely heavy just a little more musical I think

Only on Youthanasia were they a bit more pop, which I didn't mind because Megadeth did it well. After they went through this experimental stage, Megadeth returned to their heavier and more thrash sound but they still will always be the most melodic thrash band no matter how hard their music gets.

  • @NAlvazaz

Unfortunately, the public at large doesn't really appreciate sophisticated or complex melody or music. They love (so to speak) the same chords, whatever they can dance to basically there's a commercially safe formula for most popular music. And that is what contributes to selling more albums.
This is why musicians, in general, of great talent aren't at the top of the charts. While I only have my associates degree, we learned about the theory of multiple intelligences while earning my degree. I had often felt something was up, even when I didn't know the name of the idea or comcept or the details. Sophisticated music listeners are often either musicians or audiophiles I imagine. They truly can appreciate complex music or detect patterns no matter how fast the musician is playing where some people can't hear it, or comprehend it themselves and complain about a great guitarist as being sloppy when they aren't because these listeners only appreciate slower melody.
So one of the seven intelligences that exist is musical intelligence. That's what I believe is going on when people don't appreciate Megadeth's (or similar artist's) musical technicality and usually go for bands like Metallica which while they do have some brilliant compositions, more songs, than not, play it safe in general. I guess it's good if a band wants to be a gateway to harder metal. Someone's gotta do it I suppose. Don't get me wrong sometimes I like fun music to get earwormed to and sing in the car, but I always return to one of my favorite bands that takes the greatest care in creating the metal version of classical music influenced songs even if they are thrash songs with a band like Megadeth you can count on melodic complexity.
I wish super talented artists were appreciated more as well but at least I know why it often doesn't come close to being loved by the public more than it should be.

Watching this again, and commenting again haha... you know something came to my mind now... megadeth also reminds me of heavier stuff such as Pantera. Still to see some Pantera cover on your channel. But not sure you actually consider that a healthy style of singing? I mean Phil's.

I never heard of the band until now.... Their vocals seem so much better, then Metallica. The best way to play like them, is to play with them as they say...

Agree with u ken after metallica the most sold out thrash metal music was megadeth approximately 40 million albums
While metallica is about to reach there 150 million straight
It's not just about the sales It's about the music overall and megadeth has to be one of the top 5 biggest metal bands of all time anytime outshines metallica! It's just about the exposure and decisions taken differently by both the bands!

He'll yeah Megadeth awesome band I prefer Megadeth to Metallica myself as a guitar player they're songs are more challenging and harder to play not this particular song but the Rust In Peace stuff for sure. Ken have you heard the new album The Sick, The Dying, And The Dead it's awesome. All right brother, Take care.

Another odd, but interesting choice for an Isolated Vocals video, as Dave Mustaine isn't much of a singer, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. He is a vocalist though and has always had a unique delivery that sets him apart from everyone else. When it comes to Metallica and Megadeth, neither of those bands got much playtime in my hallowed halls. They pushed what I considered the limits of how fast and heavy music can be and not step over the line into what I would just call NOISE. So I always had to be in a certain mood to listen to their music, a really heavy kind of mood, like high energy party time. So they did serve their purpose for me over the years, though much less so now that I'm sprouting more gray hairs than I'd like to admit.
For the first few Metallica and Megadeth albums I'd say Metallica was my preferred band of the two, and I think it's very fair to say they scratched the same itch for me, which speaks to just how similar the bands are in so many ways. I just think the songwriting was better on those early Metallica releases. But by the early 90s Megadeth became my preferred band and remain so to this day. Metallica went in a more dirty, grungy sort of direction (and eventually even eliminated guitar solos which I consider sacrilegious) whereas Megadeth really started to refine and improve their note choices and melodic hooks, which is something I hold in highest regard. I love technical musicianship as much as the next guy, but if it doesn't have some kind of melodic hook or groove that sticks in my head and makes me want to play it again down the road, then it won't see much play time in my world (Dream Theater, I'm looking at you!). Between Mustaine's songwriting and Marty Friedman's signature guitar solos, they struck a fine balance between melody and heaviness that still appeals to me whereas I haven't listened to any Metallica album that was released after 1990 in two decades.
I never did care much for the vocals for either band and always thought both would have reached a whole new level with a dedicated singer tailored to fit the music. But I think both James Hetfield and Mustaine's vocals definitely improved over the years, or maybe my ears just interpreted it that way. But they are both easier for me to digest than they were initially, and on rare occasions still find some speaker time on my car or home stereo. Much more often it will be Megadeth you'll hear though, rather than Metallica because when it's all said and done, Megadeth music just holds much more appeal to me, probably because it's more melodic. To be fair, I think the astounding popularity that Metallica eventually achieved may have also played a role in my preference, as I automatically tend to shy away from anything the masses latch on to... that's just my nature.

He actually had a good vocal range though. Holy Wars for example. I recently covered ''Train of Consequences'' with my friends, and man I can tell that is not as easy as it seems to sing.

Wasn't Mustaine quite a difficult person in his young years? He used to brag about it, as I recall. The band wasn't stable, so much, which hurt his/their success, I think. Cool vocals, however...
