OK. --- This video omits the most important and difficult part. The trick to get the rear cap with the new brushes on is to remove a small pressed-on silver plug at the tip of the end piece. It is next to the centrical connector. You can then get a tiny flat blade screwdriver inside to maneuver the brushes apart and past the bearing and onto the commutator ring contact. 11mm is the absolute max that will fit. 10mm x 5 mm x 5mm fits the best. You can buy any size bigger and easily file the brushes to size, they are soft graphite. Also "weld" is just soldering the braided copper wire.
To hold the brushes back while installing: Insert a nut the diameter of the commutator between the brushes, place the springs on the brushes and add a few drops of water to them. Then put the whole thing in the freezer for at least an hour. This water holds the brushes when you remove the nut. Then, it has to be done quickly, everything can be be reassembled. When the water has thawed, the brushes are back on the commutator.
You mentioned at 3:34 that you need to weld to change the brush; what did you have to weld? It looks like you just replaced the brushes after cutting them down from being too large?
@@MecaLogic Ah, I found a spare at a junkyard and took it apart and I see now. When you say weld, though, do you mean solder? Did you just cut the old brush wire from the "spring" that it was connected to and re-solder the wire from the new brush back to that same "spring"? It would have been very useful to include that part in the video as it is probably the most critical part of the process.
@@MyMidlifeCrisis yes, solder with tin. That's accurate. I didn't find a part with accurate dimensions, so linking the part will be useless. There are very fairly easy to find and adjust don't worry.

are you supposed to be able to see the coolant circulate in the radiator with ignition on?
do i have to take out the coolant?
Hello bro. Do you have any video about auxilary water pump fix for e39?
I couldn’t find a video on how to remove the heater core, thanks.
It would help to see how you mounted it back. How did you held the springs to keep the brushes open wide to insert the top bearing?
Thanks
I don't remember exactly but I think used paper to slide the brushes up

you need to weld the new brushes to the back for the plug

Where did you get the new pump? Can't seem to find it on the net.
Its an used pump I found it at the junkyard
Where did you order the brushes and can you please tell us the order#
I buy it on Ebay, you can take the upper size and adjust it since there are no standard

The actual size of the brushes is 5x5x11 mm
Found some on eBay that are 5x6x14, so they should be pretty easy to grind to fit. $8 shipped for 10 brushes.
