- Опубликовано: 30 май 2013
- In this video I get into a misfire and check engine light on this 1997 Nissan Altima. The misfire codes are P0100 MAF sensor, P0325 Knock Sensor, and P0304 Misfire cylinder #4. The engine also runs rough at idle. I go through the steps of it's diagnosis, find the problem, and come back after the repair. The actual repair of this vehicle will take place in another video (next week), this video covers how I found out what was wrong with this Altima. Engine performance issues can be tricky to nail down but with a little time, patients, and some diagnostic know how, I'm sure you'll be able to overcome any engine performance issue.

Is it just me or does this has more suspense than most of the crap on tv nowadays?!? What a pain in the ass. Well done Eric! Learned a ton
Henry
Hey Eric,
Love your honesty. That being said, I learn so much by you
"walking me all around the barn to get to the outhouse"
Thank you for the education,
Shifty
Thanks Eric
"Stay away from those stinkin' assumptions...they will get you"... Wisdom for many aspects of life.
I accidentally saw the title of the repair video before watching this and that took the excitement away! It's painful watching you try to find the problem when I already know what it is. Tried shouting at the screen "Eric, it's the intake gasket!" to no avail.
3:35 "Okay, that screw snapped." That is so Nissan.
Eric, thanks for taking us through your troubleshooting process and not editing out the dead ends. It's not always easy to tell what's causing a problem. You shouldn't apologize for heading down the wrong path initially, especially when making a video about it. It is very educational for newbies like me to know the different things we should be checking for.
EricTheCarGuy has the best videos I've seen on youtube for vehicle diagnosis and repairs. Quality video, nothing corny, in depth quality information. Many thanks for creating such high quality work with a wealth of information.
Man...seeing these videos hurts so much living in Canada. All the cars wherever you live are always SO CLEAN wtf!!!
"Screw you, no gas for you." Haha, awesome. I'd say that is an accurate description.
This is my favorite video to date. You included everything, even your mistakes. I think everyone learns more from seeing mistakes as well as the solution. Good job Eric!
I absolutely love this video! My 2000 Nissan Quest is throwing exactly these codes (except the misfire code is for a different cylinder). I have done a number of things so far, such as replacing the distributor, ran the fuel injector cleaner, cleaned the throttle, replaced the fuel filter and air filter. The problem is still there. This video provides many great tips and tactics to think about what to try next.
Eric, I'd like to share with you some things I discovered in my endeavors with this exact same car experiencing the EXACT same problem. I really think it'd be a GREAT addition to this video because the majority of the viewers watching this video are working on high mileage cars versus the lower mileage car featured in this video. After going through regular diagnostics, and replacing the standard tune-up parts, I determined my intake gasket was leaking as well. After a timely job of replacing it as you know, I also replaced both egr valve gaskets (top and bottom) , the egr inlet tube gasket located on cyl 4, and the throttle body gasket. I started her up and it purred like a kitten..... For about 5 mins. Then it went right back to missing at idle. Under load driving was greatly improved but under 2k you could feel the miss and I was not happy. I pretty much went back through the entire diagnostic process trying to eliminate things. Long story short,
When I replaced the intake mani gaskets I did not fully remove either half of the manifold from the car, I just separated them enough to get the job done. What ended up happening was during this process I managed to loosen some carbon somewhere in the egr passages because they were absolutely FULL of it and a chunk of carbon made its way into my egr valve which made it unable to close. This happened five minutes after it started and was running perfect. It had all the symptoms of a vacuum leak. I think you should add a note to the video really stressing the importance of full removal of the manifold so you can do a thorough egr valve and passage cleaning by removing the four access plugs located under each runner. It's impossible to do the cleaning in the car and if you reinstall with new gaskets you are just wasting your time. At any point in the repair you can knock loose some carbon and it can get stuck in an egr passage and BOOM, you're missing again required full removal a second
Second time. I learned this the hard way and after having to do THAT job twice, I wouldn't wish that on any mechanic.
CLEAN YOUR EGR AND EGR PASSAGES WHILE THE MANIFOLD IS OFF!!!!! DONT BE LAZY LIKE ME AND NOT PULL THE MANI ALL THE WAY. YOU DONT WANT TO DO THIS JOB TWICE.
^ moral of the story kids
Learn from my mistakes and Eric's knowledge.
For information on how to clean the egr passages refer to Eric's video where he performs this job on a F22 series Honda motor that's very similar.
+Taylor Gresch Heck, if I was in there with a chance to take the EGR out...I might just block it off lol
only 86,000 k on it. My 2000 Nissan Altima GXE has 240,000 k on it. It runs smooth, no check engine lights, no oil leaks. Passengers are amazed how smooth and good my car runs and sounds. I pamper my car. Good line that Nissan produced.
Z31Rider boii nobody care about yo 2000 nissan altima son. car still trash lol
Rizal Galiza I have a Nissan Pulsar Hatch it's also an amazing engine runs like a clock
I have acquired a 2000 altima and its running rough, kinda thought the intake but haven't checked it yet, wish to thank you for your work on this video and covering so many tests & has helped me on my homework before i dig in as im new to nissan...your a great teacher, thankyou
Damn, I drove my E30 with that rough run almost 2 years now... Going to check for leaks tomorrow first thing!
Eric i honestly have to say i love watching your videos your perfect explanation and step by step on how to fix procedure, take care buddy.
Eric the car guy ***** 5 stars for you man
I have seen a lot of your videos and this has to be one of the best. In particular I like when you explain the strategy and logic of a particular approach before you try something. And then when that does not work, you explain the next logical strategy and approach. A good Sherlock unraveling of what the root cause is that eventually reveals itself. I am way past my youger and foolish years when I would just throw parts in an attempt to secure a fix. The true fun is in an accurate diagnosis
Great follow through on this Eric! I know this video is 10 years old but is helping me with my daughter's 2000 Altima right now. I'm a new subscriber for what that's worth.
Thank you Eric. This is perfect instructions. Appears to be identical with whats going on. Im rough around the edges. I appreciate y'all giving this much needed help.
Simply the best automotive website on the net. Excellent as always Eric.
Thanks Eric, I learned a lot from this video; you're a great teacher w/ systematic diagnosis. I really appreciate your video after just changed my intake manifold successfully by myself (after watching 2 videos - from you and the other guy).
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment.
These are some of the best instruction videos I've run across. Thx.
This video is great because of the tests Eric performs to find the problem. Finding the problem is good skill to learn that comes with experience over time.
After weeks of research my car is fix do to your video you are great person for taking the time to post these once again thank you so much!
Don't feel bad. I can't tell you how many times I've went way far in depth trying to diagnose a misfire/air pump, etc.
Sometimes the most obvious solution is the one over looked. No harm in looking at the entire system as a whole and testing/verifying each individual component. This video was a great learning tool for me as it was for everyone else.
Keep up the great work!
Awesome video! Thanks Eric. I love your diagnostics methods, there is so much that i can learn from you...
Great job on the diagnose. It really helped me out on finding the problem on my car. Keep up these great videos and Keep them coming ty.
Thanks Eric! I feel like a freaking genius now. You're a great teacher.
Stroicho metric?
Eric doesn't use high tech diagnosing tools because he tries to do tests that the average person can do. It isn't practical for the home mechanic to buy expensive equipment. ETCG is designed to save you money. Good video Eric. I've chased my tail many of times and then found the problem was right in front of me.
I think this is a very good video to put up Eric because it shows the challenges a technician faces trying to diagnose a problem and all the possibilities they can be. It also illustrates how important it is to look at all possibilities before you start throwing expensive parts at it. A lesser tech would have just installed new injectors and then the customer would eat that without a resolution to their problem.
Hey Eric I know you probley wont ever read this but I just want to say thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into these video I really enjoy them and instead of wasting my time I spend it wisely watching your videos you are very entertaining and very descriptive and help me a lot when I have an auto class in school I can have like a debrief on anything from watching our videos if I could sum you up it would be wonderful have a great weekend Eric your the best!
Eric, I know I'm just another one of your viewers, but I'm 18 and got a job at Honda about 6 months ago, I've been watching your videos for quite a while. But I'd just like to thank for not just the countless times I had a problem and you had a video on it, but the life lessons I've learned about you on work ethic, and being kind and responsible and learning from mistakes. You seem like a great person and I'd just like to say thanks for everything man! Stay dirty
Hey how are you doing after 10 years as a grease monkey?
Eric you are a mechanical BEAST!
This must be one of your best information videos Eric, very educational. Good work. Assumptions, lol, we've all been there and done that - way too many times!
I felt a little bummed about Eric throwing parts at the problem, but I later thought about it and realized that he shows us the real-life human examples of what most people would do. Our mistakes is what helps us learn and get better.
Excellent video! Ton of info here. I had performed about two of the test listed here and it still seems to point to a bad injector, but now I will follow through on the others to verify prior to removing the intake collector.
I always enjoy your video clips Eric.
Fabulous video, Eric. Thorough and informative as always. Much appreciated!
you can learn so much about engines in these videos as a layman.
nice work. keep it up
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for showing us everything you went through and not cutting out any mistakes, etc. Really nice video. Thanks for all u do.
You are a Godsend. I really appreciate all your generous sharing of knowledge. Keep up the good work . You are awesome!!!!!!!!
14:50 you can clearly see some electrical arcing in the distributor cap ...;)
Thank you brother i appreciate it, the commentary at the end of the video was extremely helpful
Look at it this way Eric, you got a great all around misfire diagnosis video out of this.
Great vid. Really like you including all your diagnosis even if it means you miss something. Very helpful
Eric, your videos are always informative & interesting. Keep it up!!!
Awesome video. Was glued the whole time. I'll be watching more.
I wouldn't say you dropped the ball on this one Eric. Simply you gave other things to look at when getting said check engine codes. And I learned a lot despite what you may think is a mistake. Keep the vids coming and take care!!!!
Love Eric's videos.. one thing I also do when checking ignition wires is try to wiggle them as the engine is running to see if there is a connection issue between the wire and the spark plug.. this can often tell you which wire is bad too
Great video Eric!!! I look forward to Fridays for your new videos!!!
EXTREMELY helpful video! Thanks!
Excellent as always Eric.
Awesome! You are the best RUclips mechanic ever! Thanks for the video! Appreciate it!
This is a great educational video, great work Eric!
Thank you for posting fails and all, makes me feel better about myself:)
Eric The Car Guy,
Excellent Excellent Excellent Video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video, mate! Keep up the good work! In addition to tech savvy you've got camera presence as well!
Nice video for troubleshooting bud. Learned a lot today. Thank!
Awesome thoroughness and explanation.
this video is the boss i like when the challenges are tough and this was a difficult one. it did take some level of patience on your path.
love it. Stay Clean.
This has helped me take a step back with an issue on my bike. I really should stop making assumptions.
Very good video, Thank you.
Misfire could be very frustrated.
A friend of mine, his truck was misfiring on cyl#3 and we followed all the steps that you just did we couldn't find a reasonable cause for the erratic misfire that was happening only on high way speed, or high load.
We all chase the rabbit down the hole once in a while. Good to see the rest, and even entertaining.
those are really good tips at the end. thanks again eric my man!
May have dropped the ball but now we know how to test for maf, ign, and fuel problems. Great video for that reason!
very nice, i like that you showed that even with all your experience things can be missed.
I very much enjoyed this video. I think some people view and want to see perfection. This is a practical experience and MORE likely to be the case. Thanks for posting this one Eric. Stay Dirty!
Great video Eric ... Thumb's up can't wait for part 2
best videos on youtube, this is quality material right here :D
Nice video. I got to the trial and error by with good diagnosis and reason why you went there
Enjoyed this diagnosis, nice one Eric!
Beautiful diagnostic, I learn certain steps to diagnose. Thank You
Mate, your videos are awesome!
I felt like I was back in tech school (Baron Institute of Technology) with this vid. Love these informative vids.
Great stuff. Learned lots of new things about petrol engines.
Smashing tutorial as allways eric :-)
That was a complicated one, and if you get a bit misdirected then we would never have figured it out in a million years:-)
Great learning :-)
Great video! Thanks, Eric
This was very helpful to finding out my car problems.
I got the same thing
thanks for going through all the possible diagnostic test. alot learned
Great explanation thanks Eric
great video eric.you covered alot in a short amount of time
I am amazed you have found a pre-2000's car this clean where you live.
I'm surprised that you didn't see the arcing on cylinder number four. You can see it clearly right after he rew the motor. When the engine then goes back to idle you can see the fast arcing bolts from the ignition wire to the valve cover.
Watch for the arcing on cylinder four from 14.02-14.07. But still great vid, like always good job Eric!
Yes, he is a very great teacher even to a woman!! Thanks Eric!!
Lots of good diagnosis info in this video!
I have a problem just like this one on my vw Thanks Erikc you are the best
awesome video sir, tank you..👌
My approach to this after seeing the tune up partly improving the rough running, I would resistance check the injectors, then swap 2 injectors around to see if the issue follows that injector. If no change, I would suspect vacuum leaks.
When you pinched off the return line, thus sending FULL fuel pressure to the injectors, you could be dealing with a fuel pressure loss which is simple to verify.... however, by sending maximum pressure to the rail and injectors, if the computer does not shorten injector pulse time accordingly, a larger volume of fuel will be injected, which helps compensate for the vacuum leak which makes it run too lean.
Eric, I started to follow your video. Wonderful and sharing. I like it a lot.
This was better than CSI. Great work on the vid.
nice work eric..i do like your methods of tracking down engine problems...;-)
I enjoyed the process... really well done!... I always learn something!... Just for thought, if I suspected the injector, I probably would have swapped the injector w/ another cylinder to see if the problem followed.
a really neat little tool to check FI without unplugging anything or taking anything apart is the EFI Quick Probe, neat tool!!
very interesting video Eric. Thank you tony uk.
Nissan Altima 4 cylinders in this vintage had problems with the intakes. It is very common. Also the knock sensor tends to go back too. It is much easier to get to when the intake is off.
Erick! Trouble shooting has never been this fun for me! Thank you!
Great video Eric!! Very educational and newb friendly :)
To bad i live in Portugal...Love to work with you! Great vids! Best regards, thanks
When you were looking for arcs, I saw a few arcs between cylinder 1 and 2, afterward there was some arcing at the distributor cap too.
