My grandmothers Cadillac had a recall for the spring that holds the car key in place. If too much weight was on key it could slip out. But instead of replacing the spring when she went to the dealership they just put a cap on her key ring loop so she can’t put it back on a key ring 😂

Pre-Renault Nissans, Mazdas, and Hyundai (preferably 2000's and early 2010's models) are all modern, good choices that don't hurt the wallet, nor do they break down as much. The hand-crafted German vehicles and old Volvos are also decent choices, but they're all pretty old now, but they're decent if you don't mind the age.

*( Not sure how I feel about the new F150(s). 4 of my friends have bought them brand new but, issues with BOTH, the EcoBoost and the 5.0. The Ecoboost presented a variety of issues, from waste gauge issues, to inter coolers "over-cooling" and condensing too much causing engine shutoff issues during long highway trips, to the brand new 5.0 miss-firing when on full throttle while going uphill. My friend with the 5.0, has took it back to the Ford dealership in Chattanooga, TN, and for the 3rd time what he hears from the maintenance manager is the good old "when we test drove it the issue didn't present itself"...Again, we're talking BRAND NEW. I'd rather stick to a good old Toyota Tundra, thank you very much. )*

As a mexican american your absolutely spot in with auto parts made in Mexico. The reason why the quality is low specifically with the American auto brand has to do with the wages the american auto makers pay. In a chevy factory in Mexico the average wage was 6000 pesos which is 300 dollars a month. However Nissan and Volkswagen also have plants in Mexico and the cars or parts that they make there are sold in the states, there wages go from minimum 10,000 to 25,000 pesos which is 500 to a thousand dollars a month which makes a big difference in Mexico.

I have a family member who is a ford factory certified mechanic and has been since the 90's. He says all cars made in the last ten years ago and today are disposeable cars. I tend to agree. I would say that for reliablity, many of the best cars were made from the mid nineties until 2010 or so in my experience of what I have owned and heard from others. So what was behind the decrease in quality? Corporate greed, cafe standards making vehicles lighter with less steel and more plastic. I'm going to stick with the older cars for life. The new ones with their high sticker prices are simply not worth it. It will be interesting though to see how the new generation of electric cars hold up in comparison to the current crop of gas powered vehicles.

Interesting..... so bailout money means lower quality? He conveniently never mentioned the Ford Firestone fiasco, the 5.4L warped heads, snapping spark plugs, and top end issues, F150 electronic 4x4 systems where they replaced them with manual hubs so they would work (in the late 90’s), the massive dual clutch issues with the Focus and Fiesta were they don’t move when you first start the car in freezing temps, the ecoboost direct injection carbon build up issues (the repair is to remove the heads and blast away the carbon with walnut pieces like Mercedes and BMW do), and then there’s the $15 Billion they received from the governments that helped develop the ecoboost technology which Ford never paid back because they saw it as a grant/investment in technology. The governments also backed $18 Billion of loans Ford took out two years before the bailouts, which the governments have already forgiven a massive chunk of it too and covered the bill with the lenders. He brags about Toyota yet never mentions the runaway stuck accelerators which Toyota never actually fixed after three failed attempts because it would mean a complete redoing of the computer programming in millions of vehicles world wide. Yet two people at GM who hid the ignition issues they created and its an entire company’s philosophy. Scotty, you are getting more difficult to watch with each video.

    • @youngb1ood

"t's only needed peripheral things like fuel pump, brakes, a new coolant overflow tank, etc. Othewise, it's great. I also have a 1999 Mercury Sable with the Dual Overhead Cam engine, 24 valve. Same thing about the engine. The heart of the car is great; engine designed by Porsche (look it up!). "Ford can't compete with the small car/sedan market..." I know they had a recall due to bad trans in 2014 - 16, but the recent Ford Fiesta's (Especially the ST's) are one of the most fun and versatile cars I have ever driven.
I own a 2018 Fiesta ST and sold my Benz just because that car is so fun to drive, so easy to work on, great features without the crazy computer issues, and that thing is damn fast.
The FOX Ecoboost turbo four cylinder is the way to go, but they also make a three cylinder supercharged engine which isnt the best.
I still get about 30 - 35 MPG highway and for such a light car, that 220 Horsepower feels like a rocket.
If Ford continues with the Fiesta line in the future, I can't really see myself driving anything else.

It’s advertised as getting 42 miles per gallon but actually it’s about 39 to 40 if you’re driving it nicely driving it badly will be 36 to 38 Highway city combined. However, if you’re only doing city driving it will do about 45 to 50 miles per gallon.

Scotty! Here’s a little inside info on the GM light truck rear end / front end differentials. GM sold American Axel to the company that took the manufacturing to Mexico. Now when it was American Axel, they did a partial pre-assembly of the Ring and Pinion gears and punched marked them so they new exactly which teeth had to match up. They then lapped in the ring and pinion to make them a matched set. After the set was lapped into tight tolerance, the set was dis-assembled, cleaned and final assembled to the punched marks they had been lapped into. Now when the assembly went to Mexico, they still lapped In The ring & pinion gears, but without the punch marks to match them back up. So after they were lapped, dis-assembled and cleaned, when they put them back together for final assembly the units have a mix-matched set, which have an oscillation of various degrees depending how out of match they are put back together. This resulted in so many warranty claims, GM brought back the differential production to Grand Rapids, Michigan where they completely refurbished 1/2 of a GM plant. To your point, all about profits.

The old "Toyota trucks don't break" is dead. After the market collapse in 08 every single manufacturer took a major hit to quality. Even the ones who didn't go bankrupt. They all started looking for more ways to save money..... which means cheaper parts. Toyota chose to go cheap on their suspension and frame materials. Now Tundra's and Tacomas are rusting away and needing complete front end rebuilds. Front end suspensions on the newer gen Tundra and Tacoma has terrible longevity. Starting at around 2013 or so. Toyota isn't what it used to be.
My qualifications: I've been a mechanic for nearly 20 years now. I've watched the not-so-slow decline. I've seen the rusted frames and I've rebuilt more Toyota front ends than I care to admit. Also my nephew works on the assembly floor at the Tundra factory in San Antonio. He has all sorts of stories about the cost cutting and cheaper manufacturing.
I miss the old Toyota when longevity truly was king. Like the old saying goes, "They don't make them like they used to."

@ bngr bngr. I don’t know about the latest ones, but I’ve driven ones from 10-20 years ago extensively. Tacoma’s are the better vehicle hands down. If you’re going to buy new, get a Tacoma. Used, I’d get a Ranger. The Rangers aren’t garbage, they’re just not as good as the Tacoma and you’ll have to repair them more frequently to get to 200K and beyond. My 98 Tacoma was virtually all original and going strong at 238K. My 03 Ranger needed multiple repairs by 100K, but no major failures.
Tacoma’s have absurdly high resale value however. Even high mileage beaters demand a high price. Rangers have a resale price that reflect what they are actually worth.

Yes General Motors is totally messed up we have a Camaro Z 28 that was built in 1987 he still has the original engine in the original transmission and they both work perfectly we change the oil every 3000 miles and we never change the transmission fluid so at one time General Motors did have quality merchandise. General Motors is run by a bunch of idiots they could not keep the Pontiac brand live or the Oldsmobile brand live. And now they build Cadillacs with four-cylinder engine which is totally stupid if you drive a Cadillac you should have a V-8 engine not a four-cylinder engine. And General Motors really screwed up they couldn’t build a decent Chevy impala they build a piece of crap with a 600 engine in front wheel drive. They should’ve built a Chevy impala with a V-8 engine rear wheel drive but it appears nobody has the brains of General Motors. and there’s definitely something wrong with Chrysler all their products are not well-made and Fiats are complete garbage that’s why nobody buys them💰💰💰💰🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🧁🧁🧁🧁

Ford lost me forever as a customer when they decided it was cheaper to pay the wrongful death and injury settlements on Pintos whose gas tanks exploded on impact than it was to fix the cars. Talk about only caring about profits. The horrendous design of the dual clutch transmissions didn't help. I've read the manual transmissions in Mustangs are also failing. If a car company can't build a reliable manual transmission they have no business making cars. Saying Ford is the best US automaker is like saying out of Ebola, COVID-19 and the flu, the flu is the best disease.

@@discerningmind I agree! Myself being an all Toyota fanboy, even I feel Toyota is making worst cars to break so they can sell more parts. Example of this is the new Toyota's almost all moved to electric water pumps. A good old mechanical pump would've been just fine. I don't like how they're making efficiency changes in the cost of reliability. I'll take a mechanical water pump over an electric one any day. Look at the n54 n55 BMW engines. Electric water pumps just seem to fail a lot sooner compared to a mechanical.
