T3 Review (1995-2022), Kentucky Kingdom Inverted Coaster Being Retired | Worst Vekoma SLC?

  • T3 at Kentucky Kingdom was one of the earliest SLCs, so it featured the rarer prototype layout. While this ride looked fun, it is one of the roughest coasters out there. Even more so than your usual Vekoma SLC, which was quite rough to begin with. The ride was so rough, even the park's own marketing team mocked it! The park recently announced the ride would be closing forever. This video reviews the experience and speculates what may come next.

Having been to parks like Wild Adventures, Elitch Gardens, and Magic Springs, the SLC's are the main "big" coasters and the GP seem to love them.
I've only been to KK once, back in 2014. Our group had a Q&A with Ed Hart. The conversation turned towards T2/T3 and the consensus from our group was to "TEAR IT DOWN!!!" Ed got a little annoyed and seemed pretty hyped about the new Kumbak trains.

I think a two-ride package from Vekoma, with a Suspended Family Coaster and one of their launch coasters, would be an absolute smash hit to replace T3. That would fill in the gaps for inversions, a launch, and an off-the-track coaster all at once. We already know Herschend got two new Vekoma coasters for Dollywood, so it's definitely not out of the question.

I'd prefer that they first refurbish the entire back side of the park and add some nice landscaping if not theming. I'd continue this all the way to wrap around the hideous area around Storm Chaser. I don't think Herschend will make KK into another SDC or Dollywood but they tend to do a good job with aesthetics and KK really needs that. I'd then worry about a replacement ride once the back side looks nicer and keeps the focus more within the park instead of just seeing ugly barbed wire fences and the wall by the airport.
As for a replacement, I think a Vekoma Space Warp would make sense. Herschend has become buddy buddy with Vekoma recently so I think it makes sense. I don't see them putting in anything from Mack.

Unfortunately, Kentucky Kingdom likely will never get a replacement.
Herschend treats their large parks well (Dollywood & Silver Dollar), but has never added a new thrill coaster to a small park they owned or managed. I'm fact, they have a reputation for removing thrill attractions from them. Wild Adventure makes Michigan Adventure look good.
Herchend's big investment for Kentucky Kingdom in 2022? Beach chairs. Their big investment in 2023 (announced alongside T3s closure) wandering children magicians and a small fireworks show that starts the week after 4th of July (aka, starts when fireworks get cheaper).

Six Flags Darien Lake has this exact same coaster and call it Mind Eraser. It's extremely rough. The first inversion (the one after the main drop) produces so much g-force that it hurts. Literally wrenches your neck pretty bad if you're sitting in the front. The entire ride is extremely bumpy and bangs you up pretty good.
That's nothing compared to their wooden coaster called The Predator, though. It might very well be the roughest wooden coaster on Earth, and that is _not_ an exaggeration. It regularly injures people, sometimes severely, so they posted signs about how rough it is which state "Ride at your own risk". They also have a list of health conditions that make you ineligible for riding it. It's crazy to me that it's even allowed to be in operation. I got whiplash on it (in the early 2000's) which ended up lasting 2 weeks before fully going away. I also got bruised ribs on it once when I was in my early teens. I will never ride it again. It's so poorly built, and so old, that there's nothing they can do to make it any better. The craziest part about it is that it's been a horribly rough ride for over 40 years. It's not something that happened due to aging. It's always been really bad. I have no idea what company made it but it was not a very good one.
    I give The Predator a 1/10.
I really hope you check it out at some point just to see how insanely awful it is. It's truly something to behold.

Being that I'm the "um, ow" kid from the Coaster Studios Vekoma SLC parody (after being asked "what did you think of T3", and I know that moment has been memed, in fact I'll go ahead and credit it for the ride's social media presence) I'm actually a little sad I never got to ride it even though I think I'd probably agree with my line from that based on everything I've seen. I think it'll probably be replaced by a B&M mini dive with a splashdown or a Mach power splash, some sort of coaster that works in a water element since it's right next to the waterpark and that's more popular with the GP than the dry rides.

When the coaster ran as T2, it had the standard Vekoma SLC trains, which were shorter than usual. These featured bulky over-the-shoulder harnesses. Yeah im sad that I wasn't about to ride my first Vekoma SLC eventhough I have heard negative things about those types of rides. But i wonder why Kentucky Kingdom KK never announced a official closing so people include the GP General Public Coaster Enthusiasts would have enough time to ride T3 before it permanently closes en gets Demolished. I have 3 speculations to why T3 got shut down without warning.
    1. The ride reached the end of it's Service Life. I know for a fact that Rollercoasters have a certain amount of years that they can stay operating in full compactly until it has to close for safety reasons etc.
    2. The Ride was a Maintenance Nightmare or had technical problems. You guys already see whats going on with Cedar Fair, eventhough Kentucky Kingdom isnt owned by them they are own by Herschend Family Entertainment. But im assuming they are following in Cedar Fair's footsteps by removing rides that are unpopular, are maintenance issue's see what what happened to Knotts Berry Farms Vekoma Boomerang, Volcano at Kings Dominion, Fire Hawk, Vortex at Kings Island. My Hypothesis is that Kentucky Kingdom ran out of technical parts for T3 which would make it harder for the ride to operate en it definitely would be a major hassle to keep T3 running is there is no more parts for it since Vekoma is evolving and enovating their rollercoaster track type and the company as a whole just trying to use common sense. And I believe that Thunderhawk Vekoma SLC at Michigans Adventure a Cedar Fair park will eventually sooner or later will suffer the same fate.
    3. Prime Land. If yall look at google maps you can see that T3 is on a patch of prime land where Kentucky Kingdom can make a good decision business wise remove T3 and replace it with something bigger en better obviously. Im hopefully they replace T3 which newer model of a fun modern day suspended coaster a Vekoma Suspended Thrill Coaster. Or maybe they should replace the ride with a launch coaster.

I don't think the major parks wouldn't really benefit from it, especially compared to their lineups of other coasters. In personal belief, there are several of the more lower end or budget amusement parks that could make good use of this. Some seaside place like Adventure Island, Barry Island, one of the Pleasure Beaches (not Blackpool) or at a Pier. I understand that these coasters are by no means great at all (and T3 was one of the worst SLCs according to form), but at the same time it would still be a significant improvement upon a Pinfari Zyklon and lower quality funfair rides. Although not top-tier, it'll be a good way to bring such a major attraction to these types of locations on a lower budget.
