Great Nor'Easter Review, Morey's Piers Vekoma Inverted Coaster | World's Best SLC!

  • Great Nor'Easter is the world's best Vekoma suspended looping coaster. Originally opening in 1995, this coaster was originally red and rough. Now, the coaster is white and smooth. Morey's Piers and Vekoma completely retracked this inverted coaster during the 2016/2017 offseason. And this SLC also operates with the Vekoma vest restraints that eliminate headbanging.

I rode this before the retrack. It was the first SLC I rode, I expected a B&M quality invert but instead got one of the roughest steel coasters I'd ever ridden. Good to hear they fixed it, the same should be done to all the other SLCs.

Morey's may be a unique case. Since they don't have spots to expand, they invest more in updating/fixing their current rides.

I’ve always loved the layout of SLCs. Even some are rough, I’m glad this one took strides to completely improve it. It goes to show the layout works when it’s comfortable. It’s a layout meant to pack a punch!

I have always had a soft spot for SLC's, I always just laugh the entire time because it's so ridiculously rough and wild, it feels like it's going to fall apart lmao... I always anticipate every element and keep my head still accordingly. This coaster is wonderful for those who like it smooth, which I never thought I'd say about an SLC. Also the view is objectively beautiful

Thanks for the video. It confirms my own impression of the SLC models. I always found the layout of the coasters and the forces involved to be quite good. Unfortunately, the rough ride ruined a lot of it. I imagine being able to drive a reasonably smooth SLC as a good experience.

I rode this coaster for the first time back in 2003 or so when it still had the original pinkish red color scheme. I rode it once with my uncle and i remember how crazy the headbanging was on it. It actually made me hesitant to ride B&M inverts soon after until i discovered how much smoother and more enjoyable they were!
I didn't ride it again until about 2019 or so and while i did find the ride smoother, I still wasnt impressed. The vest restraints are way better than the original bulky restraints, but some of the inversion whips on the ride are so violent they've whipped my head to the side and made my neck sore for days afterward. I've tried it a few more times since and had similar experiences. I really want to like this coaster but it seems like i can't get a good ride on it. One of the reasons why Great White is my favorite coaster at Morey's.

I'm really excited for the SLC at Lost Island next year, as weird as it is to say. It's original manufacturing date was about 2-3 years newer than most SLCs in North America, it'll have Vest Restraints, plus the park owners claim they got the ride refurbished, which could potentially include minor retracking. I can't wait to see how it compares to this one.

I do remember the red track but I can see why they repainted it white since the red color appeared to be fading and didn't look too pretty. Last time I was there in 2015 the supports were white so I can see they repainted it again and it does look nicer in terms of color compared to when both the track and supports were red.

Usually SLC's ride better in the back half, but it's too bad that you can't enjoy the visuals as much. I don't have the same hate for SLC's that most enthousiasts have. The basic layout is great, and I maintain that if you can find a smooth one you have a great, fast-paced, white knuckle ride on your hands. B&M simply can't match them for pacing and intensity, apart from Nemesis and maybe the Batman clones. Most beat you up pretty bad though.

I feel like I’m in the minority but IMO this ride still sucks. I rode it again today and have over the last few years. I also rode it for the first time in its original form. Yes it is smoother, but it still has some rough spots and jerks that you won’t find on a B&M invert. My neck always manages to get thrown around no matter how many times I give this ride another chance, and then I don’t ride it again. A few years ago, I felt like I was almost decapitated going into the double inline twist. My head was so violently thrown (and yes I had it back) that my neck was sore for about 2 weeks afterward.
I can marathon bumpy wooden coasters and Arrow loopers never bothered me like this coaster does. Heck, I would ride Sea Serpent with the old trains way more than this, and Great White is better than both of them.
I just can’t seem to have a good experience with Nor’easter. It bothers me more than almost any other coaster I’ve ridden.

After Bolliger & Mabillard debuted their inverted coaster in 1992, Vekoma introduced their inverted coaster, the Suspended Looping Coaster, or SLC for short. In 1994, the first Vekoma SLC was built, El Condor at Walibi Flevo. The Vekoma SLCs were cheap, compact and marketable that made many parks in the world to purchase SLCs during the 1990s and 2000s. Both the B&M inverts and the Vekoma SLCs were found by many enthusiasts as intense and snappy rides, but unlike the B&M inverts that opened as acclaimed, the Vekoma SLCs opened as...

Casino Pier in Seaside Heights is my primary 'beach' destination, but I always make at least one trip to Morey's Piers in Wildwood every year. I've ridden GN'E many times, but not recently; with the cost what it is, I often just save my money for other things (but I always do the flume ride). Oddly, I've never ridden the renovated version; I really should. Maybe in 2022.
Between this, "Great White", and "Sea Serpent", Morey's Piers boasts (arguably) the best coaster collection of all beaches, and almost certainly Jersey shore beaches.

You didn't talk about the view over the beach, which is why this has ALWAYS been the best SLC. Reaching the top of the lift ( 7:20 ) at night was the most amazing feeling. All 5 inversions also face out over the ocean, making it a contender for best coaster on the coast, since the otherwise better Gale Force doesn't make much use of its location.
Haven't ridden GNE since it was repainted orange though. Loved it back then, once rode 25 times one night along with driving 8 hours that day. It was violent but I don't remember the shuffling where, by the end, Mind Eraser can seem to be bouncing back and forth more than it's moving forward. Of course, it was a lot more cutting edge in '96, not everyone had access to a B&M *at all* in those days and good coasters tended to be a bit painful. But even after riding Alpengiest, I wasn't convinced it was better until a night ride.

I rode before and after the 2017 retrack and it was a huge improvement! Before, the barrel rolls were deathly uncomfortable as the train violently shook through them. The old friction brakes jerked the train to a stop so fast that the track in the station would shake as you were sitting on the next train waiting to dispatch, but the new magnetic brakes greatly helped to smooth the quick stop. Not sure what the deal was with the lift speed last summer as it was quite slow during my visit in June, but sped up some later when I went back in August and September.

  • @ArielSupp

So happy there's at least one SLC that is smooth! I always had a place for SLC's in my heart since in my country we have so little coasters that an SLC is one of the best in teh country, and I always thought that the layout for these coasters is so iconic and pleasing to look at, specially the roll over with that one specific angle (you probably know what angle I'm talking about 🤣) so it's nice to hear that we can see that the problem was never the layout, but the track smoothness.
