I feel like it's easier on the knee to turn the foot, especially when kicking. When I kick without turning it I tend to put the leg that's on the ground it in such position that it sometimes hurts later. Power is one thing - especially that I am 60 kg and I can't afford to lose that much of it - but it just feels better to me. Your mileage may vary, obviously, it probably depends on anatomy a lot.

    • @oneoranota

Knee injuries are a real problem that can be solved multiple ways.
      - You can anticipate the move by putting your feet at 90°
      - You can turn your foot midmove, it is slow though, really only for training
      - You can do an imperceptible jump during the kick so that your foot slides in the right position by itself (at the loss of some power)
      - You can control with the hip as shown in the video and not let the momentum go down to the knee

I try my best to keep things simple. When you figure out how to use your hips, your foot placement/movement is a question of grounding and mobility. Then just trying to do things in a way that gets the most out of your own energy while dealing damage and keeping things as tight as possible. Fighting is messy, violent and chaotic. It's great putting structure to it but don't let that make you rigid. There is a lot of room for creative thought and problem solving in this game.
I'm glad you posted this video, I've been watching a lot of Ernesto Hoost lately and it's great seeing how he moves his hips and feet.

Took my first boxing class yesterday and watched my coach turn his lead foot on a hook. I had never saw it before, but immediately realized it would be useful in boxing because it grants more power through hip and turning as well as setting up the back leg step back after the combo. In kickboxing my coach has taught combos that involve stepping in at an angle to finish off combos with a kick. Two different fighting styles resulting in different footwork and techniques. Depending on what strikes you're going to throw you can switch up the footwork

Yo, Icy's got the moves there, man! Good explanation actually addresses something I've been thinking about the jab and that kick reminded me exactly the muay thai kick I've seen in some competitors, definitely a good principle to apply. Specially that if you don't rotate the foot completely outward from the beginning it makes harder to tell how the kick is coming.

Thank you for another great video! At the very least I believe maximizing your torque for a roundhouse starts from the foot and moves up and through your body, it’s both how you get a 100% power shot but also how you get those whip like thai kicks with blinding speed. Right now I’m trying to learn to kick like your talking about, since I’m learning more set ups using kicks rather than set ups to land kicks it’s starting to become apparent I need a lighter repeatable kick.

      Really?
      Any videos of that?
Liam is an aggressive fighter, and not very technical, but still that’s sounds weird to me.
Maybe for low-kick, a big part of his game, but for body kick not turning your foot is blasphemy in muay thai.

This comes down to the importance of sparing at least sometimes, to know where you can cut corners and be effective. like our boy Mark Hunt

I totally agree pretty much. The only factor that I think you should talk about is that there are also defensive reasons for certain postures. Example: Turning your lead leg potentially opens you up for a takedown. Also certain ways make it easier/harder to throw other follow up techniques.

You can also throw your lead hook like a jab, so instead of pivoting off the lead foot to engage the hips you take a short step forward to engage the hips and pivot more from the shoulder

So true about most of us amateurs worrying about perfect technique when our real main goal is get the better of the other guy during some light friendly sparring. That kick will really give you an advantage since its so much faster than than the more traditional MT way. I still do the full turns on the pads for fun but mix it up on the heavy and of course sparring never turn since it will slow me down and make it more difficult to control the power.

Before covid on my school campus i started karate, then out of curiosity and braking the norm i joinedmy belky dance club. Im 6'5 270lb. Didn't do much belly rolling but a lot of hip mobility and isolation. It helped the class was aftwr karate and loosened and strengthened my hips.

I find the step and plant the foot at the 45 degree angle for low kicks works really well, it seems like a common Dutch style. But id pivot on the ball of the foot for kicking anything higher.

Agree... some get the left hook right because they coordinated but most don't. Thus you need to give pointers like turning their foot towards the hook

yes i agree... i would say "timing" is probably the most important thing. i have seen people get knocked out by falling into a fully extended punch that was left out. dancers make awesome martial artists, they already have timing, balance, aware of their hand / foot location.

I like how Lamon Brewster throws his left hook. He aims his shoulder from his back foot to his opponents back foot. It's quick, effective and works great in close quarters. Watch his fight with Klitchsko.

That's a great explanation of the hip in the roundhouse 👍 - for the front hook we usually encourage students to lift their heel slightly to relieve any tension on the front knee (but every body type is different) ... we teach the hip movement first 😁

Maybe technique is more about having a smooth, undetected, energy efficient attack? Like you said "hard enough" does knock people out for sure, but maybe it doesn't transition well with combos and such? I dunno just letting my thoughts wander on this one :)

Finally! A video of yours i agree with :) It is important to teach/follow "best practice" initially, until the student gets the principle involved. After that, technique is modified to achieve optimal performance as suits the students ability and preference. But this is the same for ALL physical skills eg; dancing, tennis, swimming, basketball... not just MMA.
