Glad you are alright Mike. I was getting a little worried. I even reached out to Seth to check on you. Good to see you Icy. Oos.
I can attest to the danger of kitchen utensils, even if not knives, there are plenty of melee weapons available to choose from.
@@BarFlyChef the name checks out.
Man Eric was really feeling the spoon and the spatula back there during the sponsor part
It was all I could pay attention to
that's what a good ads look like. apple should try that when releasing the next iphone lol
I've had to get ninja with a spatula a few times. I've had to disarm someone once with a giant metal one. That was a little sketchy.
he was annoying
Kitchen fu is real. Never fuck with Ping on his kitchen.
"I'm not a monster, I'm not going to suplex him on a Lego"😂
Mike ain't stupid, he doesn't want to deal with that paperwork and law suit!
Would look awesome as a logo on a t-shirt 😂
I didn't get that either. You put a Lego in that space you pay the consequence for having a Lego in that space.
Or maybe he doesnt want to fuck up a kids face when he doesnt have to?
"Don't call the cops for out of control teenagers" "No specialized training. All we bring is violence." Thank you for being straight up about that
ok
So you are going to handle it yourself? lol
Yes. I don't know if I'd be the very best guy for the job but I do have a significant amount of de-escalation training and 15 years of experience working with people with autism (which seems to be a likely factor here). I'm not saying there is never a time to involve the police but there should be a step between nothing and guys with guns and "no specialized training". I think myself and a 2-3 other people with related experience could improve some outcomes
@@MNTrader2012 there is a lot of nuance in that, but in general. If there is a situation, if you wouldn't pull a gun on the person, don't call the cops.
So, absolutely DO call the cops? Got it.
Mike fought the hash slinging slasher and never told us? WTF
The bash bringing....sash singing ....crash dinging...
.....Potato Smasher!
I believe he has said small parts of it many times
He’s telling you now
😂 so underrated!
Know when to hold them and when to fold them was unfairly good
I thought of you.
@@hard2hurt Was this entire video a setup for that great joke?
@@iwantagoodnameplease I wouldn't doubt it lmfao
"Know when to hold 'em... know when to fold 'em"
Frickin' A, Mike 🤦♂️
He's been spending too much time with Sensei Seth😂
When Mike picked up the bench Eric had this look of fear 😂
What I appreciate about these videos and Mike in general, is that he shows real compassion even though he is trying to subdue someone violent. Like yeah, the kids is dangerous, but Mike is actively trying to use as least force as possible. If all cops acted like this, think about how many tragedies would be avoided, how much less public outrage there would be.
I don't disagree with what you are saying but the issue (generally speaking) is not a lack of compassion, it is a lack of training. Most (really all) depts. are shorthanded, over worked, and under trained.
Training takes lots of time and money agencies don't have. So why don't more cops train on their own? Many are working 50+ hours a week and are mentally worn-down when they are done with their shift. Also, many LEO's feel they should not be required to pay (personal time & money) for training that should be getting on the clock. Doctors, EMTS/EMS, and other public safety have all their training (required continuing ed.) paid for and built into their work shift. Most cops only get 2-4 range days a year and 4-20 hours of Control Tactics / Combatives a year.
All that being said, I agree, Mike has a great demeaner for law enforcement that not all LEO's have. As an FTO I can tell you, it is not getting any better. Less people are applying for "cop jobs" every year.
@@acd-combativesmy jiu jitsu coach has this thing (I think it was like sponsor a cop) where if you are a police officer they give you free training in jiu jitsu to be able to control and fight more effectively
“People laughed at him!” He says while pushing back tears from laughing at him for the past ten minutes.
It was probably Mike telling how the story went down to the lads in the Station.
Probably trying to make it as funny as possible.
Eric was an awesome co-star in this one!
Yeah, he was. Dudes fuckin' hilarious and expressive.
No he's the main character
More Eric please! Funny guy. Also, as a cop, I like how you broke down your incident. Well said/explained. Cops are hammers and not all things can be fixed with a hammer. ALL depts. would love to incorporate more training dealing with mental health calls, but they don't have the time or money. Sad but true. REAL training takes lots of time and money that agencies don't have. also, if they (LEO's) are training, who is out patrolling? ALL depts. are super shot handed. Thanks for the video.
Dispatcher here, I thought the agency issued something to reverse 14 years of bad parenting and whatever psychiatric cocktail they put them on instead of addressing it.
I remember the time i tried to call a radio silence for the 16 year old 6'5 autistic kid with a pole saw and they just cleared it instantly like "ppft we can handle the 16 year old" before coming back 2 seconds later a little more amped realizing the reality of the 6'5 chainsaw barbarian
Mike took the Tavern Brawler Feat i see. Adds proficiency bonus to the attack rolls made with improvised weapons.
and salami.
@@natedebate6259lol why salami?
Sometimes charcuterie happens.
Because i am THE master of salami based self defense... In baldurs gate 3@@JBirdBobbyJ
Does Mike get advantage on attack rolls against minors? lol
"You need some furniture, and a friend"
Priceless.
I would not have expected the advice to be "Be more like jackie chan" but I like that it is.
Thanks Mike for posting this. I work as a nurse, mostly in psych facilities. At times, we have aggressive patients. I frequently instruct other staff on appropriate handlings where we attempt to minimize harm to patient and staff. Always seeking help (ie additional people) is the number 1 rule. Similar to the situations you describe, we have used a bed mattress to create space, pin the aggressor against the wall, and slowly wrap them up (in said mattress) - while disarming them (/medicating them). Truth to your recommendations of using found furniture.
Bonus tip: socks for scratchers. Putting socks on the staff hands, to then 'shake hands' style with the aggressor, and transfer the socks on their sharp nails.
Looking forward to your upcoming vids, please keep posting. Thank you!
Ps: Eric, cool flip!!!
I've worked in similar settings and can confirm. I had a good laugh at Mike's opening question because this is a real problem I've had to worry about. Like you said, getting a team together is key. We were usually lucky to have actual plexiglass shields available to immobilize people and protect against improvised weapons/bodily fluids until they could be restrained with a "strong sheet", pinel restraints, chemical restraints, etc. The other big thing, and Mike touched on this with the rookie and him trying to throw the person in opposite directions, is communication and planning, ideally beforehand, or at least as soon as you can immobilize them. Figuring out where you're going to try and immobilize them, who is doing what, what restraints you want to transition to, etc can all save problems, but it just depends on how much time you have before you have to act.
My mom was a psych nurse for most of my life. Stopped roughhousing with her in my teens because she fought so smart and dirty. Same with friends that I had over. She had one trick where she'd act like she was reaching to snag someone's nuts if they were trying to grapple with her.
Sounds like an exciting and terrifying career.
Thank you for being there. Someone has to do it, and you stepped up to the plate. Not all heroes wear capes.❤
Lol thank you for making this video. I was the guy who sent the message, I was really amped up at the time cuz i commented the next day it happened.
My co worker (victim) survived but do to head trauma will be at risk for seizures for a while if not forever. And had staples across his chest and face.
The attacker is now surprisingly out on bond/bail whatever awaiting trial. No guns a loud at my work but we do have the WWE chairs lol.
Once again thanks for the video.
A chair and a friend is actually usable advice too
@@malkomalkavian it is good advice, I'm glad he said not to grapple, this took place about 30 minutes after i left the locker room, if I was there my instinct would be grapple being a bjj/wrestler. I have a feeling I would have took serious damage too.
@@mtnman8876yeah man, if you went straight in there, it might have gotten pretty ugly, especially with your arms or neck exposed to that box cutter. Even pinning the guy to a wall with a chair you still had to deal with the pipe as well and get bashed with it. It's tough
Your coworker made a tough choice between seizures and finding a different job.
Entering a victim disarmament zone always carries a significant risk.
@that1guy487 you can always find a other job - you only have one life. Do what will will bring you home to your family. Those stupid work policies (which many times DO NOT carry the force of law) will get people hurt by making them.mostly defenseless.
Loved the way Eric's face lit up when Mike handed him the spoon and spatula.
"I'm not a monster, I don't want to suplex him on a LEGO". I think that would be "cruel and unusual punishment". :D
I love how Mike's doing the sponsor thing and Eric is in the background doing full send with the spatula spoon florentine.
I vote for Eric being in every vid he’s absolutely hilarious in the background…get him a raise or train him for free something. He’s a legend in the making💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Please, please have Eric on more often 😂 I love him swinging around the spatula and spoon in the background,😂
Just had that spoon stashed for half the video? 😂 Those ARE some sweet sweat pants!
pretty smart. with a few good principles:
1. know when to release and change.
2. using objects.
3. position before submission
Icy Mike: "You don't go melee weapon to Melee weapon..."
Also Icy Mike: "Grab the greatclub to defeat the dualwielder"
even without the opponent holding any weapon, i think it's still good to use chair or other furniture as a good defense tool.
Eric is brilliant in the background as well. More Eric
Hard to find another RUclips channel with as much entertainment, humor, and very practical advice. Keep it up Mike!
mike didnt mention that it was the cold steel tactical camp spatula
As someone who does martial arts with weapons, this was on point, people think that bigger or more weapons are better, no, just an something with good reach can do wonders against a dual wielder, better if it can trap them , and combined with not letting him adapt, you have it on a silver platter
Totally agreed. I have a lot of experience with grabs and joint locks, and for me, the other guy having a weapon is actually an advantage for me with the same results that Mike showed in the video when he trapped his partner up, who was still concentrating on his weapons.
The last line of the video = gold
So glad you addressed improvised weapons (ie furniture and kitchen utensils), they're so underrated. People tend to forget that less-than-lethal options can still injure and hurt like crap. Y'all never banged your foot against a door or your leg against furniture before?
After watching this video, I'm actively training to be a coffee table ninja! Ain't nobody ready for a coffee table ninja.
5 stars for Eric's performance, start to finish! And 5 stars for Mike's outro line. 😂
Mike perfectly demonstrated a principle we often practice in historical swordsmanship. Reach advantages can be overcome by being very close or very far. He used the chair and headboard as a shield to pin the dual wielder and safely repositioned to grappling distance.
Genuinely, this might be my favorite video you put out. Super helpful 🙏
Eric is the best. More Eric! Good vid, too! Good topic, well done.
What an amazing closing line! Perfect!
SPOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!!
The amount of pride oozing out of that last couple seconds XD
I went and bought 1 pair of joggers and the retention belt! Thanks Icy! I had never heard of them!
Eric in the back is hilarious.😂😂👏
Another great video. Eric's antics during the ad were great and was yet another way to prevent me from fast forwarding.
Buddy cop movie with Eric and Mike would be Gold!
Lmao, Eric is so funny! I love his energy and little improv scenes with his improv weapons. Cool dude 😁
The fun factor of this one was off the charts :) Educative and useful as always, but man... this guy knew how to entertain us from the background :)
All right, I got to own it. I thought this was going to be one of your goofier videos and I wasn't going to get much out of it.
It was one of your goofiest videos, and I'm definitely going to pass this on to my FTOs.
Nicely done man. Thanks.
Eric's reverse grip anime poses were spot on _and_ hilarious. Seems like he's got some comic con experience under his belt 🤣
Eric in the background had me rolling 🤣 😂 💀
I'm glad you're back posting again.
NGL, I thought something might have happened to you.
Mike using superior fight knowledge to gain (bed)frame advantage and set up takedowns, nice!
During the sponsor part, you could have filmed the guy with the spoon and spatula. He looked like a ninja!! Lolol
Transition from dropping the box to the kick was slick yo. 😎
A tonnnn of good one-liners in this one💯🔥😂
Love seeming my boxcutter in the video. Glad to see you posting again, my friend.
Eric is a deadset legend!
Gambler reference at the end was on point! Kenny Rogers approves!
The education and entertainment are on point. Started off serious, did not expect to hear "he was posed up like a ninja turtle" or "I'm not a monster I'm not gonna suplex him on a lego" but still learned something in the end LMAO
I feel bad for the rookie, "Dude who got whacked with a spatula" must've been his reputation for WEEKS
War stories Mike is best Mike :D
AND now that song is in my head. thanks.
On the bright side, it's not a bad song to have stuck in your head.
The robusticity on those tactical sweatpants is 👌
Brilliant last line
That's one way to keep people from skipping the ad read
I'm wearing the Arrowhead joggers with my S&W Bodyguard .38 in a hip carry right now. I sometimes even carry my Walther PPQ Q5 Match in the same configuration in these pants. I only barely notice that it's there and it doesn't get in the way of drawing. It also makes reholstering easy because the belt, while a little stretchy, holds strong vertically.
Good video! That was some excellent practical advice to a situation I never hope to encounter or ever even thought about- smoosh method is great!
Man I've been wondering about the headboard incident ever since you mentioned it in the pistol whipping video, I wasn't expecting it to get immediately overshadowed by spatula-induced lacerations during the very same incident lmao
I like your war story videos. You seem like you were a good cop. Always thinking about how to solve problems.
Epic ending.
furniture as a weapon. sounds like a good tool to have available.
Eric added a ton to this video. Awesome
This reminds me of a time working in healthcare, where a delirious patient (70+ lady, 5 foot nothing tall) had got hold of the top part of an IV stand and had smashed a hole in wire reinforced window. We couldn’t really allow her to continue, but this was a time before we had security. The location was a corridor, wide enough to swing the 3foot metal bar. Our solution was for a colleague and I to rush her, one going high and the other low and to hug her, reducing her ability to swing and to ultimately remove the IV pole from the equation. It worked, no one got hurt, especially the patient and eventually she calmed down
In DSP training for dealing with an armed EDP, they teach a pretty standard couch cushion stuff against wild swinging weapons or edged weapons. Testing it out with some kicking shields against a simulated knife it actually works pretty well, especially with two on one.
Great self defense tips, great presentation. I love your videos Mike. Eric in the back during the sponsor spot was priceless.
I think weapons of opportunity aren't talked about enough, even in self defense schools. A chair is a great tool. Gives you distance, it has 4 different legs they have to deal with (as you said, they'll hurt themselves trying to attack). It's enough of a tactical problem that it opens them up for you to transition to something else and get in their ooda loop.
Eric was enjoying himself way too much. xD
Background entertainment during the ad. Five Stars.
I watched a documentary in which a giant turtle used 3 pointed daggers to pin the assailant's hands to a wall and disarm him. It was very effective.
This was super insightful. Thank you.
Eric is a legend. Without words he adds to the story.
Eric is having fun🤣🤣
eric straight cookin in the back mad based lmao
metal spatula combat just reminds me of the flat shoves used in WW1 trench fighting.
Reminds me of the time when I was a teen at my friend's house and his autistic brother was threatening us with a knife. I grabbed a baking pan as a shield and got the knife out of his hand while my friend called 911
the 1st lesson in self defense, never hit anyone with your fist, when you can hit them w something within reach.
word
Mike is so damn good. Love the commentary. Love the banter. Love all of it.
You definitely know how to make a sponsorship announcement entertaining ! I don't care about carrying weapons, I want your friend's ninja skills ! 😂
Beautiful ending 👏 👏 👏
I love this channel so much
I think this is why law enforcement in other cultures have used variants of the man-catcher weapon. It allows you to stuff an assailant wielding a melee weapon in a way that's similar to what's been shown in this video.
Ha love this channel. Great stuff. Keep it up
Mike has been playing a LOT of Baldur's Gate, I can tell.
This is the single best Icey Mike video ever created.
Excellent video, any kind of shield beats a melee weapon. The folding chair is way under rated lol. Long poles work well in open areas too.
One of the most entertaining episodes so far
Basically use a weapon with greater reach to your advantage. A broomstick would make a good spear in that case too, but any kind of furniture should be able to outreach a knife or spatula.
I just want to say Eric made the entire thing 10x more entertaining
Thanks man
Quote of a lifetime ‘I’m not a monster, I’m not gonna suplex homeboy on some Lego.’ 😂😂
eric bringing great vibes 🏝️
Watching Mike bust out the chair against the dual weapons has convinced me even further that we need to show this man some Yakuza clips.
You know, the bench was a pretty common southern kung fu weapon
Hi, Mike! I love watching your videos on combat sports and self-defense because of how you test those theories/techniques and you make really good points about them. Your "no-nonsense" approach is amazing, and I really appreciate you making these videos.
I have a question regarding items for self-defense. What do you think of combat boots or safety boots with a steel toe cap and kevlar midsole for self-defense? Would the added protection and weight make it a great self-defense aid? Assuming the person trains in combat sports like kickboxing or Muay Thai and would like to add a bit of oomph & safety to his kicks in street self-defense situations. Since combat boots are readily available to civilians and are perfectly legal even in countries where weapons are banned, would they be a viable self-defense option?
Could you perhaps provide some insight on that? If possible, maybe you could even consider making this a topic in your upcoming videos.
