I've got 40 years experience in all this mess-- in jungles, in gangland areas, and military all over-- and it doesn't matter HOW freakishly good you might be-- in a knife deal- you WILL GET CUT-- I've been in several involving a knife- and I survived and WON-- but YES I still got cut. I'm not talking legalities-- if that person has a knife- and you're empty hand- you are justified-- PERIOD. Forget the damn law-- you can get out of jail easier than you can get out of a 6ft. hole!!!

      Yes, but it has to be trained just as intensive as an athlete trains sports such as Boxing, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Fencing, la canne, kendo, arnis, kalinda, single-stick. The main thing is to gain experience by competing in stickfighting as many rule sets as possible along with fencing & boxing if you want to actually use these arts. When I learned it was with rolled newspapers, switches, spatula with flipflops stuck to it then bamboo which is less dense than rattan. It wasn't until I was in my 20s that I was training and completing with rattan. Train how you compete & fight.

    I liked that the grip is not on the wrist but on the hand itself. Focusing on the wrist, as mentioned, does not limit the rotation of the hand and therefore the knife can still cut you. This mistake is quite common in general teaching of self defense against knives when "instructors" only half learn the technique and think that's how they should teach it.
    I also liked the emphasis on mobility and hitting rather than just control. Those have always seemed underrated to me. That is, if you have the opponent under control and within reach, what stops you from attacking the face, the eyes, for example?
    Excellent video.

    Absolutely love this. It's not fancy. Evade, getting off the line, the stun, this is all solid information. When you see these fancy disarms or people charging in grappling, they're going to be in the ER if they're lucky enough to make it that far. Distance and timing and actually practice this ish. And most importantly carry an equalizer a gun or knife yourself, unarmed knife defense is a fast track to the cemetery.

    Love Sifu Danny Terrel! He is far and away the best instructor I've ever worked with. In his classes, he has such a keen sense for when he can turn a drill into a limit-testing, humbling moment. We were working some wrestling drills, a mount escape, I think. Sifu shut my escape down and simply put his hands on my throat--not an especially effective attack. But, at that point in my training, I wasn't able to respond to the visceral stress response and completely failed to defend myself. He knew he could (safely) present that test, going off the script, and gave me the chance to humble myself.
    To this day, I remember (with confidence) many ways to escape that (admittedly ineffective) attack. Collapsing the arms, levering one arm at the elbows...
    Such a knowledgeable teacher with an incredible eye for testing limits and facilitating breakthroughs.

    Very consistent to almost all who teach kali... run, escape or evade. Very true. Engaging only happens on very specific situation where one could not evade, run or escape. Even then, the next option is truly to get another weapon. And if all else fails, only then you apply the techniques in close combat.

    The reason grappling arts like wrestling or Jiu jitsu touch on knife defense( If it’s not the usual Jiu jitsu self defense ) is because people who willingly attack people with knives usually grab you. If that person knows how to grapple and you don’t, you’re not gonna create distance. That’s why they “fight the knife”. It’s not about where you wanna be with an armed person, it’s about where they put you. Create distance from any physical altercation, that’s self defense. Learn to fight, that’s combat sports.

And whatever happened to low kicks, a leg break will slow him down, but the knife welder can kick you while your trying to control the knife hand. Speed is everything, and lots of training. Here's something noone will tell you about real kali fights. Old kali masters always carry chili powder, pepper powder or even a small baggy of talcom powder in their pockets. If they have none, they always go for dirt to target the opponents eyes or at the least aim at the forehead area. my lolo (granpa) even told me, he bit his own lip to use his own blood to spray his opponents face. Then he picked a stone and threw it at his opponent.
    My point is this, kali is not all about techniques. Look at yout surrounding and make calculation to use it at some point to your advantage or as an exit point.

    Good video, and lots of good common sense information. My only added information would be utilize what's in your environment to not only create and maintain distance, but also create obstacles and barriers helping you maintain distance; or see what is available to turn into an improvised combative tool, that would allow you to damage their arms (thus they lose the ability to hold and utilize the weapon), their legs (thus they lose the ability to close distance), and of course their head (thus by becoming unconscious or at least disoriented (thus they lose the ability to continue the attack fully, or at least continue the attack effectively). Hence giving you increased chances to get away.

In all honesty, Jiujitsu is good in 1 on 1 but you can grapple 2 to 3 opponents all at the same time, and I think having a martial arts like Kali can actually be effective in multiple attackers, then again use kali not the traditional arts but try to incorporate different styles that is more pragmatic rather than looking fancy.

In confined spaces like trains, small cafes etc I feel like some of the kali training can be useful but *what are some basic training movements that are essential to knife defense?* I feel like a video on specific drills or movements would be interesting to see.

      footwork is very stressed atleast in coach danny's classes so that might help in that situation

    • @strystyl
      @strystyl Год назад +2

      @@daddiskrub I did notice that. There was a huge focus on getting out of the way of the attacker

      @daddiskrub Год назад

      @@strystyl yes it is extremely important and helps with more than just excaping

    What happens if the attacker is physically bigger and stronger than you are and they have a knife out? Also you don't have the opportunity to escape and you can only fight back. What then?

    • @35nanz
      @35nanz Год назад

      The answer is, just get ready to die. At least you die fighting rather than dying as a victim. hehe!

      Then fight back. Fight dirty. go for the balls, bust the knee cap, gouge out the eyes, whatever. grab a rock or something. Hahaha. That's the only choice I have.

    Here is a slightly different question. Do you think the mentality of "self defense" is wrong? So much of what is taught as self defense is a reactive mentality. "if the opponent does this then you do this" kind of choreography almost. Is it not better just to learn to fight and the combatives that go along with the mentality you develop from knowing how to fight?
    My interest (because so few people train it) is the unorthodox techniques with the pikal blade indexing. I understand why the orthodox techniques are always shown but as someone who has trained in that pikal style, I wonder how these techniques would need to be altered to compensate to combat someone who uses that style. Also his methods and understanding are brilliant and you are really good at interviewing and giving people room to demonstrate, so kudos to you.

    Fantastic artist and teacher. it would be a dream to have all of the great sensei's come around show proper defense for everyone to see. Having sensei fong spar with this guy would be so good for learning in all fronts. Thanks Kevin! You and Jeff chan should set something up like this. Both of you are legends in teaching us and showing us valuable info to improve ourselves.

    Simple, usted trate aprender todo lo que pueda referente a este asunto de usar cuchillos y defenderse contra ataques de cuchillos, la realidad es que uno no sabe a que hora, lugar y en que condiciones lo van atacar con un cuchillo si es que es con cuchillo, un arma de fuego, un palo, una botella o con cualquier objeto, la verdad es que un ataque con un cuchillo existe la posibilidad de un 95% que lo puedan cortar o sea que usted debe pensar y tratar de convertir el 5% que le queda de no ser cortado en una probabilidad de un 95% de no ser cortado, amigos a la hora de la verdad, es muy fácil decirlo que hacerlo, nunca se limite a un solo sistema o arte marcial, recuerde no se trata de que es lo mejor, se trata de que es lo mas efectivo y funcional posible para tratar de sobrevivir a un ataque de cuchillo. Porque se trata de sobrevivir, no se trata de que aquello es mejor o o es mejor esto otro, usted entrene con conciencia y con lo que favorece y lo que tiene en contra cuando usted aprenda técnicas de defensa contra cuchillos así de simple. Nadie es Superman, si tiene la oportunidad de sacar un objeto sea le que sea para defenderse de un atacante con un cuchillo, pués hágalo es su vida la que está de por medio, no se ponga a usar solo las manos por querer demostrar que sabe, esto se trata de sobrevivir como sea y llegar a su casa o al hospital lo mas sano posible pero vivo para seguir con su vida otro día mas.
