    You’re overstating the Sony lowlight advantage. I have both cameras…The Sony advantage at 12,800 is real but people usually fail to mention that it has nasty performance between 3200 and that 12,800. The Panasonic at 6000 beats it.

    A few days ago, I used my Panasonic S5 with the Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 and the Panasonic 85mm 1.8 at an event which ended up being a low light event. I used autofocus and I did not experience any problems. I should also mention that I have eperience using the Panasonic focusing settings!

    Like you mentioned, depends on how you like your images to look and how you get there. For myself, micro jitters is my absolute enemy. Every time I see micro jitters in footage I’m just like “eh”. It’s the reason why I stayed away from any other camera besides Panasonic. But someone could say the same about AF.

  • @akyerit
    @akyerit 2 года назад +5

    So funny I’m in the entirely opposite camp. I left Sony for something more inspiring. The picture and ibis are way more important to me than autofocus. Plus the AF would still fail for me with my Sony anyways so I was never THAT impressed with it. My main issue with using autofocus is the lack of hands on control of where and how you want your focus. And add to that I think, ultimately I want to build a cinema glass kit. Which will consist of all manual glass anyway so… and my two biggest gripes with Sony were horrendous ibis (I tried using the gyro and wasn’t impressed and it wasn’t consistently reliable or good enough for me) and the image itself was always uninspiring, for lack of a better way to put it. It always lacked soul to me for some reason. That I always felt the need to heavily try to add in post lol! And it would seem that the s5 have those exact two things that my Sony lacked, which were absolute deal breakers for me. I always thought to myself, if only they had a gh5 type of camera, but full frame. And low and behold they actually made one. That’s even smalller than the gh5! Who cares about auto focus lol!! I did hear someone say that they were using their Sony for RUclips content, and their s5 for their professional gigs. That’s a good way to differentiate them, for me I guess

    It's funny being a panasonic fanboy, and seeing these videos sadly happen over and over lol. I remember being into M43 and seeing countless of my favs slowly leave it. Then I went full frame with the S5 and S1. And now everyone is leaving to Sony. I wish Panasonic was more aggressive with listening to consumers. I use BRAW for HDR specifically in Resolve w/ panasonic, so I'm sticking with it, but I genuinely am sad to see the company seemingly die in the market.

      I wish Panasonic would listen to their consumers too. I'm hopeful that they'll introduce phase detect autofocus to their future cameras because if they do, they'll be a serious force to be reckoned with. I have literally seen 4+ friends go from hearing my recommnedation of Panasonic, to then getting a Sony instead due to RUclips reviews all talking about AF. And lets face it, for the company to succeed, it needs the vlogger crowd, and almost all a vlogger needs is AF lol.

    Thanks Spencer! I have the Lumix S1, and I absolutely adore the image, V-Log is a joy to work with and the dynamic range and low light is insane, coming from GH5. I do miss the reliability of autofocus, but for 2000 USD, I got the camera + 24-105 lens, which is crazy good for me. Luckily rental prices for a7S III are pretty low, so in places where I need that level of autofocus, I guess I can just rent and use an a7S III. Thanks for your insight though, much appreciated :)

    I do not know if S5 is not enough for this type of work. I mean, I have my Fuji XT3 (I bought it for photography but now I am doing a lot of videos, so I am planning to buy a need equipment withe better video capabilities. With my Fuji I used AF a lot and I works ok, not awesome but not to bad, sometimes I have had the issue that AF start to hunt a lot, I dislike that. Since some months ago I have been trying Manual focus in my XT3 and I still use a Nikon D5100 and honestly I have taken the more clean crisp images in Manual focus, the image quality is better than using AF in my Fuji and D5100. I am convinced that Manual focus in S5 could be better option than AF in Sony because S5 have a lot of and better tools to exposure, to know how the image will be, beautiful image quality and cheaper than any Sony. If you check your videos in this channel, I prefer the videos you made with the S5 than this with A7sIII, the image quality with S5 is better for my taste. Anyway, I am not sure what I am going to buy, if s5 with Ninja V to easier Manual focus or A7IV and fight with color grading.

    In my book the S5 is better in low light because the a7s iii messes up the colours and white balance. Also the Sony colours are still not there. You can almost always tell because skin tones are still yellowish green . I sold the Sony for the S5 (and now S1). And the obnoxious stabilisation of the Sony.

    I'm debating between these cameras right now... but I'm still leaning towards the s5. A7sIII and FX3 still look to have too much in-camera sharpening which looks horrid and digital. @@burnerr yea, promists are great... but I really think it's the what the in-camera sharpening does to micro-contrast... it looks digital and the effect is still there, even with the filter (although the image does look a bit better). But after more research it looks like the FX3 can virtually turn off all sharpening and it looks very nice and organic. So I'm leaning towards the FX3 again.

    • @burnerr
      @burnerr 2 года назад

      @@Frontigenics ahh thats useful to know. I go back and forth between getting the gh6, fx3, a7iv, s5, and the new XH2S.
      Renting a RED or Arri is pretty dead cheap in LA though so it makes no sense to be an owner operator with an FX6 or even an FX3.
      Leaning more towards the XH2S due to the built in 10bit film emulations. Color grading is fun but sometimes its more efficient to give someone color ready footage on the spot.

    I just wanna mention some points:
    If you think that gyro is better IS (which in my opinion is very unpopular opinion since micro jitters don't disappear) that's a huge argument for the pocket 4k/6k at the price.
    If you think that high ISO is nice, you can max out the Panasonic S1 and S1H dual ISO to start at a higher point.
    The dynamic range of the Panasonic line up compared to the A7sIII is not large.
    For those reasons I just bought the S1 over the FX30/A7IV and spent the rest on lighting and an easyrig :))

  • @BensBreakdown

    Just bought the s5 after using the a7s3. A lot to do with budget. Always have access to the a7s3 as a good friend owns it. I will say if you have the cash and need 4k 120 or 4k 60 that have identical image quality to the 24fps the a7s is the obvious choice. However, the image quality on the s5 actually looks better even if you are shooting at 600 Mbps on the a7s3. The way the s5 encoded or renders the image looks less processed and over sharpened even if you turn the sharpness all the way down on the sony.
    I actually prefer the photos out of the a7s surprisingly but for video the s5 looks better to me. Probably subjective. I also had a lot of experience with HLG with the gh5 and got some very professional looking video out of that in Davinci resolve.
    All in all very happy with the s5! For the price it's the best hybrid you can buy.. if you want anything above m43.

    I just purchased an A7IV this week, and will be selling my S5 with lenses as well. My only issue with the S5 really just boils down to Auto Focus. Manually focusing every shot because you can’t rely on your camera to get it right makes me have to repeat many shots, and for event films is just not a very enjoyable experience. It also makes you look less confident in front of clients when you ask then to retake the just you just took. I hate Sony colors with a passion, but I’m going to try my best to figure out how to get a consistent grade as I mainly shooting in the Natural Profile, so it’ll be a real pain to get the colors right.
    If, and only if Panasonic decides to implement useable PDAF then I will switch back immediately, but I will unfortunately have to leave as my work is mainly run-and-gun, and good AF is a must.
