Tip on your double leg, stop going/diving head first rather keep your hips under you and under them too; keep your head up, don't look at the ground but rather have the underside of your chin parallel to the mat. Do those while maintaining good grappling principles (close space, timing, set ups, etc.) and your shots will improve dramatically. It also looks like you are closing your eyes on impact and tensing up, relax and keep you eyes open my dude. Best of luck!
I love the fact that you not only show the success in the take downs but the failed ones too. Cause let's be real shit happens and a fighter has to adapt. As always great video.
Nice! I love takedowns off of strikes or while being defensive from strikes. I suck when it comes to bjj where we only do takedowns without strikes. I need that set up lol. Your takedowns are lightning fast and smooth. I've tried to develop my takedowns after yours. 👍👍
I appreciate you showing your partners scoring against you too. It shows that you're only human and not some unstoppable martial arts monster like Steven Segal in his movies.
Could you do the defense against these timed takedowns in your next vid? I've been practicing my takedowns lately and I think I'm getting a lot better.
I like the RVCA shorts of your demo partner bro, wanting to buy one!hehehe.. Watch the whole vid and I’ve seen how effective the takedown is even in a much larger opponent (1:40, 2:49, and 4:00 minutes) Thank you bro for taking time to create this kind of content for your viewers. Kudos Brother! ✊
The successful moves are really nice, but I also appreciate the failed attempts. It shows what else could happen if things don't go as planned. Great video, man!
Love your vids man, great stuff. Quick note, a lot of your takedowns you're getting into the habit of dropping your shoulders below your hip, make a more conscious effort to propel your body into them rather than just your shoulders. Granted old vid now, and I know how hard it is to execute these well mid fight, but it's all about dropping your hips and driving with your legs and slaming their hip with your body/shoulder. 1:43 was a perfect example, even if he weighted 50lbs more then you he would have gone down.
Amazing video Jeff! I am learning more wrestling in BJJ, so this a lot of this still applies. I plan on using it. Also, what’s up with the guy at 2:50? He seems like he is throwing bombs in the sparring session!
For Jeff to be a stand up fighter he has a lot of informative videos on wrestling take downs for mma. Matter of fact in my takedown research on today I've received more info from his channel than any other.
Nice video! I am wondering, I've always been told to never shoot for the opponents back leg because of the risk of rear uppercut and kneeing, however, I see you shoot almost exclusively for the back leg, is there a good reason for it other than you're a southpaw?
@@MMAShredded please do! Also I'm right handed so my traditional wrestling stance is right foot infront. My striking is orthodox so my left foot is infront for striking/mma. It makes things tougher to shoot when striking
I have told you before, I have never professionally been taught grappling other than muay thai So, I find this really helpful. I do wonder though, how useful it would be on the street for two reasons. 1) because of multiple other people trying to kick you in the head, 2) it looks like you are really committing to that charge in like a proper bull, what if you land badly on a pavement or an uneven concrete surface?. For me as a novice would be way risky. But that is why I would get beat by someone who can and would, lol. Respect bro and thanks for sharing your skills and wisdom.
no prob thanks. Takedowns and MMA are definitely diff than on the streets. There are too many different factors. But if its 1 on 1 than you can bet it is effective!
Doing it off throwing a high kick or mixing it in with a dipping jab are good set ups as well. Or when u feint a leg kick and they go on one foot to check
Jeff I didn't know you could drill takedowns with boxing gloves? How many oz are those you guys are using? And which grappler(s)/wrestler should one study for mma? And that takedown at the beginning is awesome man. I literally slowed down the video to study it's mechanics, it's not your typical double leg. I'd like to know why is the opponent dropped on the side of the rear leg? Looking at it, it looks intuitive to drop on lead leg side. An explanation will be appreciated
Hey bro! It is definitely harder to score a takedown with boxing gloves, but we wear boxing gloves sometimes just so we can hit a littleeee harder with the striking. I think George St Pierre is one of the best guys to study for MMA. As for the takedown, it is a variation of the double leg, known as a head on the inside double leg. It is a combination of a knee tap / double leg. I find it is much more explosive and fast but it can leave you open for a guillotine if you are too slow with it. I drop my knee on the far side because I can avoid shooting into their guard, whereas if I drop by the lead leg, there is a higher chance that I fall into their guard.
Hi Jeff great video. Thank you. Would you mind breaking down the actual takedown technique at some point. I am sure you have a long list you want to do...🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I'm always impressed by this kind of technics (I've only done french boxing which has no take down) as it always seems so risky. I mean I always expect the opponent to raise a knee and and kill the attacker instantly. How can it does not happen more often ? not even by accident ? Especially against a shelled up opponent, ore, even worse, against a kicking opponent.
it definitely is possible to eat a knee in the head when shooting for a takedown (Yoel Romero has successfully done it, and most recently Masvidal vs Ben Askren) but its also a lot harder than you think to time it. If your opponent is good at setting up the takedown, sometimes you just dont know when they will shoot for it!
Jeff, I have a question: most historical and very old wrestling styles that were used in an environment of serious fighting (Sumo, Bökh, Shuai Jiao, medieval German wrestling, etc.) are all about good balance and standing while the opponent drops. The benefits are clearly visible when we look at Pride FC rules: a downed opponent can be attack with kicks without getting oneself into too much danger. In all existing MMA rulesets this is not allowed, you have to go with your opponent. So what is the actual tactical benefit of a takedown if you cannot really take advantage of the original idea of a throw?
if you take your opponent down, you get points and you continue to gain points by staying on top. You can also do a lot of damage without kicking or kneeing them in the face (punches and elbows)
Hi Jeff, good video.! :) I am really weak on the shooting due to age, judo, & aikido injuries. Are there any simply drills without a partner I could do that would make easier for me to shoot and strengthen the skill?..deep bow.:)
Hey Mark! The only thing I can think of without a partner is to simply drill the double leg shot. Simply change levels/squat down and take a big step forward with your lead leg as you visualize grabbing the legs and running forward. Or you can drop to your knee, sweep your back leg forward to stand up and continue running forward!
Who says grappling is not pretty? There is nothing more beautiful in a fight than a perfect level change to shot. Have you come across any health effects, from yourself or training partners, from excessive dumping onto butts? I had a couple injuries from wrestling but not much of any in judo from the way we send each other onto the mats.
great topic to cover! just wondering, why do the COLUMNS in the middle of the mat-area not have PADDING? you could kill people if you do a takedown and their head hits that concrete pillar.
So that's why they were able to land takedowns because of these strats, especially CHAMP KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV. Thanks again for this vid chan. I rarely get to see you block. Can I suggest a video about blocking or best tips for defense whether from takedowns or combo punches. It would be really helpful. Keep safe and have a nice day!
Jeff when you shoot for the take down after he throws the leg kick. You said it's risky because a knee might be coming instead. But how about you just place your head on the opposite side instead when shooting for the takedown. And you should be able to get it since he's already on one leg and your body weight as you shoot should be enough to knock him off balance. What do you think 🤔. P.s I study alot and am just saying because I don't want to see you get hurt in a real fight doing that.
