As a Judoka that trains in Kudo (Japanese MMA with gi) I really appreciate this video, thanks! A note - the arm spin is also a takedown in Judo, called Ude Gaeshi 腕返し (not a throw that can score in competition, due to the twisting of the arm, but a long-recognised takedown to newaza).
Most grappling arts have a name for pretty much any takedown the difference is the emphasis each art places on them. Which judo doesnt emphasis that takedown which is reflected in the lack of points
@@vittocrazi : It shouldn’t, because of the arm twist. It is just like Sumi Gaeshi with an Ude Garami applied, or a Kote Gaeshi - a referee who understands the Judo and the rules should not score that.
@@craigcrissman4651 : I see your point. It is funny that in Judo there are scoring throws that don’t have names, yet this and some other non-scoring takedowns do have.
Ah, one of my specialties and I was hoping and waiting for Jeff to cover this. The great thing about Judo is that it holds a similar vertical base and guard as striking so it's really easy to make the transition and go back and forth. I love wrestling shoots and takedowns as well but I will be the first to say that even with speed like Jeff's as you can see in this video, the transition is obvious and telegraphed and you essentially give up the opportunity to strike to do it. I do like, though, how Jeff actually uses his wrestling shoot to set up his Judo throws. 2:12: This throw is called the Harai Goshi aka the sweeping hip throw. However, Jeff uses a headlock grip to execute it. A pure headlock throw in Judo is called the Koshi Guruma aka the hip wheel throw. So this is essentially a nice combination throw of both. 3:16 If you look carefully here you will see Jeff let the headlock go and wrap his arm first around his opponent's left arm and then down to the ground itself for leverage as he essentially throws himself down to completely the throw on his opponent. This is called the Soto Makikomi aka wraparound throw and is considered a sacrifice throw because you're taking yourself down to take the opponent down. Again, he adds in the Harai Goshi hip sweep with his leg to it, making it into another nice combination throw. 6:14 Classy and educational to show the failed attempts. Like every martial art, nothing is 100% guaranteed just because the techniques are cool. Remember, the opponent has a say in the fight as well. 6:23 And speaking of opponents having their say -- Okay, this was awesome! Huge props to your opponent who not only blocks your Ogoshi hip throw but expertly reverses it into a Kata-Guruma aka the wrestler's Fireman's Carry over the shoulders throw. He does it really cleanly and smoothly, too. Don't know if his background is wrestling or Judo but it was perfectly executed and please pass on my kudos to him, Jeff. Incidentally, the Kata Guruma was my personal favorite throw in Judo before the idiots running the International Judo Federation banned it from both competition and curriculums around the world. Why? Because it actually had too high of a success rate and was making Judo look more like wrestling on TV replay highlights to them. Seriously. One of the single most successful moves in Judo by actual measured percentage rate in worldwide competition was permanently banned because it actually worked like it was supposed to. Gotta love martial arts politics. 7:10 This style of Uchimata is nicknamed the "Can Can" Uchimata as somebody thought it resembled a can-can dancers step. Another tip to go with this: use your free hand to block the opponent's one standing leg so they can't jump with you. They're sure to rotate and go over then. You're essentially sweeping their hip like in the first throw but using your hand instead of your leg which is already occupied picking up their other leg. Beautiful stuff and great video. Thanks for posting, Jeff.
Great stuff, kudos from a fellow judoka and Kata-Guruma enthusiast! I'd add that the Uchimata is also a amazing counter to single legs and outside trips
The one where he goes backwards as a counter is called tani otoshi, another judo throw. One that I am quite fond of as it is a strong counter to a lot of throws.
By far one of my favorite martial arts channels. You always give a great explanation and actually show yourself using it in live sparring. As well as some failed attempts. Love it!
Great video! I'd add that the Uchimata is also a amazing counter to single legs and outside trips I'd love to see a video on judo leg sweeps/trips (Ashi Waza). They are brutally effective and, unfortunately may I add, very underutilized in MMA
The absolute best form factor video. Starting position, setup, execution, real sparring demonstration. So many videos just show the execution and nothing else, sometimes starting position. Cannot express how much I appreciate the sparring footage.
Training your neck also reduces the risk/severity of concussions by slowing down the snapping of the neck and the coup/countercoup trauma of the brain (can also help you not get knocked out!).
The "Head and Arm" throw is a Harai Goshi, which translates to "sweeping hip throw", i.e. throwing over the hip with your leg sweeping/kicking back. The "O Goshi" translates to "major hip throw". The "Arm Spin" throw is a bit like a mutated Seoi Nage ("shoulder throw").

I have been studying this video for a while now, these really play into my style. I was also impressed by the guy who stopped your attempt and went right into a firemans carry at 6:25... slick
Just a personal observation and something that works for me in MMA sparring: The first throw you showed (harai goshi) is very common at high levels including UFC highlights, but I noticed it's almost always done while keeping the overhook on the NEAR side of the throw, and other hand holding their elbow or wrist, instead of switching to head and arm (e.g. the arm that would've gone around the head, would instead just stay on the overhook). Clearly you've shown it's also doable with head-arm grip, but maybe you can try it with keeping the overhook and see if you like it. For example, if you were to hang out in 3:50, your partner would be in the optimal position to do this harai goshi technique against you
The O - Goshi throw utilizes a similiar throwing technique as done in the bunkai kata of Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate, Saifa. By using the hip as a pivot point for throwing the opponent over. Thank you MMAShredded.

@@gladiumcaeli Ohh thank you so much. I will watch those fights ;)).
Beautiful O guruma demonstrations, one of them looks like a high harai makikomi tho
Dakikubi harai makikomi is throw 1. With how your legs were in relation to your hips, it was technically dakikubi o guruma makikomi. Great choices.
Your O Goshi throws are fantastic
thanks man!!
Best fight/ martial arts channel on RUclips. Bar none. Would love to see him do some knife/ gun sparring like in WPS ( warrior poet society)
It'd be cool to see that stuff from a high level martial artist as opposed to a military gun fighter.
haha I have no experience with knives but id love to learn one day!
The first is Koshi Guruma in judo.
Randy doing the wall kick to avoid the throw was hilariois
hahahah!
Love you skills Jeff!
thanks man!!
