Ippon Seoi, Harai Goshi, and Kata Guruma are my go to moves for no gi. Harai Goshi is particularly good. Smashing throw that lands you in side control.
I'd never go for Ippon Seoi Nage in mma fight. Lose the grip (way easier than in gi) and you lose your back. Ashi waza seems like a logical way to do it for majority of body locks situations.
Thanks! I'm very new to grappling and I'm trying to understand basic principles. What I learned is that "hooks" act as a defense (or offense) on that side. This just clicked for me.
Awesome video! I think this type of upper body throws are the best type of takedowns for bjj rulesets where guard pulling from standing is prohibited, because you don't risk submissions as much as with the shots and you end up in good top positions. I'd definitely reccomend thise to bjj practitioners who want to invest in takedowns
Always a safe bet to recommend some classic folkstyle moves- inside and outside trips, bearhug, and a hip toss or lat drop work wonders and have great landing positions
This is so cool I’m looking at this after I accident did a hiptoss in my first tournament two days ago definitely gonna learn more judo for my stand up
These are awesome throws. When you do the arm drag and place the arm in his armpit for kouchi gari setup, could you also do a seoi nage? When you clasp your hands for the koshi guruma setup, could you also do a harai goshi?
I personally like head and arm throw (forgive my filthy wrestling terminology) but an important thing for any big throw is posting with the arm as you land with them unless you’re throwing them and not intending to land on top I also like a pinch headlock throw which uses the leg to hook onto the opponent’s and using that to throw kind of like Hari gochi (forgive my use of terminology I’m still learning what I can) but I’d like to ask if you’ve met a veteran and how they used they’re technics in a bjj or mma situation and how I could use bjj/mma in the military martial arts
Great video! I could be wrong, but I think your demonstration of Kouchi Gari is closer to Kouchi Gake, because you're hooking the leg rather than sweeping it. Keep up the amazing content!
Great stuff Prof. Eli...just curious which school/gym are you are doing this demo in? I noticed a Wing Chun wooden dummy in the background which is obviously not common in any BJJ gym so I figured this must be some kind of Kung Fu/JKD/MMA type of place
Nice video! The koshi guruma tho is wrong as its a tai otoshi with an around the neck grip. You can do all sorts of throws with going around the neck (uchimata, harai goshi,...) but if you post your foot across uke its a tai otoshi
For ko uchi gari, try working on when your partner is doing a forward step toward you, and forget about your leg. Like all other technics it's in hara (forget the common English translation, the closest translation would be center of the body)not in the legs not in the arms etc they just follow. It's something felt so not easy to explain. Here is a video that illustrate this quite well, or you could look at videos from Hirano, or Igor Correa ruclips.net/video/FTb5bDrvmTA/видео.html
Coach which throws/takedowns is your go to against wrestlers? Also is the leg trips superior compared to single/double leg against heavier stronger opponents?
I know the question wasn't directed to me but, against wrestlers, i always try Uchi Mata if i have a chance. Kata Guruma, Harai Goshi and the leg trips will work in the other scenarios. And about your second question: yes, i do find leg trips superior to single and double leg attacks. Why? *Because you can always use the leg trips as setups for other takedowns if you fail. *if your opponent (who is stronger and heavier) sprawls, you will be in a very, very bad position, and you know, sprawling is something that almost every grappler knows, while there isn't any defensive move against leg trips that will leave you in such bad position. *there is also the fact that if they don't manage to sprawl on time, they can still defend the takedown with strenght alone.
Hey Eli I have a tough question? (at least I think it's tough) if a judo fighter with 8 years of judo experience and learned WRESTLING defense for one month had to fight a wrestler with 8 years of experience but only learned JUDO defense for one month who do you think would win? Also let's say they know 2 years of Muay Thai and this is MMA rules.
What’s your opinion on the wrestling version of kata guruma/fireman’s carry where you drop to both knees instead of collapsing to one hip? I’ve seen it taught both ways, but not sure which is more effective
The collapsing leg version is found in variations of both wrestling and judo, as is the double knee and even standing versions. I think both Judo and wrestling have several variations. I personally like the collapsing leg version, but that’s just personal preference. I think it depends on athletic attributes of the competitor.
I don't know the best fixes to this problem for BJJ, but for self defense many of these throws can be done turning to the OUTSIDE of the opponent. Many are illegal in Judo because you can break their arm on such throws....but perfect and better for self defense in my opinion.
@@mfp5585 that's cool. These are still jujitsu throws, not 'no gi judo'. Traditional jj rarely used clothing grips yet all the throws previously existed
Great stuff! Way to show that judo throws can still be performed with no Gi! 👌

Ippon Seoi, Harai Goshi, and Kata Guruma are my go to moves for no gi.
Harai Goshi is particularly good. Smashing throw that lands you in side control.
I pulled it out today in wrestling after defending a single leg atfer i got my leg free.
I'd never go for Ippon Seoi Nage in mma fight. Lose the grip (way easier than in gi) and you lose your back. Ashi waza seems like a logical way to do it for majority of body locks situations.
@@BobSaint Karo Parisyan and Rick Hawn had a lot of success with that throw. But your point is still valid about the risk.

You are the best man seriously! Can these throws work on larger opponents I assume that can? Thank you 4 sharing your knowledge u r awesome!
Thank you! And yes, they can all work on bigger people, but it’s just dependent on how sharp the timing and mechanics are in the execution.
Yes!
Very good technique but for a street fight ( or whatever IRL situation) , the good ole fashioned body lock is king.
Nice video! The koshi guruma tho is wrong as its a tai otoshi with an around the neck grip. You can do all sorts of throws with going around the neck (uchimata, harai goshi,...) but if you post your foot across uke its a tai otoshi
I went back and forth on whether to call it that or not, but I see your point about the post like Tai Otoshi
Problem is it takes a huge amount of drilling and randori to be to pull these off in competition and I've ever see a bjj school that does it.
