  • I bought this snow blower off of facebook marketplace. The price seemed too good to be true. Was it, or are there hidden problems? This was a hand-me-down, he got from his father, so he paid $0 for it.

    Excellent work on articulating the maintenance you performed and great quality video ! I have the same machine under the True Value Hardware brand (Snow Chief) manufactured by Noma in 1984. Only difference is the control handles, otherwise identical. NO everyone, I don't have the manual ! I don't believe one exists on the planet ! Have a parts schematic but the numbers can rarely be cross referenced. Most parts are available but it takes research and effort to identify the correct ones. These machines were made by Murray as I understand under multiple brands including Craftsman, Canadiana, Noma, Atlas and several others. They were produced through the mid 2000's. Murray is the best brand to cross when looking up parts. Mine was given to me free 12 years ago in pretty good shape. Didn't do a damn thing except carb adjustments and maybe some fresh 10W30 since. Almost panicked when I saw what I should do in this video lol (I know better). Still have work planned, will get 'er done. Long winded, I could write 4 more paragraphs. Point is they're pretty good and I don't like the modern 1200 dollar, plastic transmission imported alternative. Again, great video !

      Glad to help. The best thing you showed was greasing the bearing and shimming it with the coin. Not many know of that fitting. Swells the joint like a tie rod/ball joint on a car. The most common parts on the Noma 8 hp Tecumseh engine/pulley parts are easy to find. Closest parts lookup for the Noma are under Murray 627804x6a or 627804x6b. Buyer discretion advised...

      @@TheFixitShed Obviously proper lubrication is essential. I have acquired a couple of grease guns and make sure to change the oil when needed. Also put some grease on the axle shafts to keep the wheels from getting rusted in place. Toro and Ariens make rugged machines too but you have to take care of them. New ones are expensive!

    Nice video. I’d suggest pulling the wheels and coating the axles with anti seize. If you operate around salt and they seize on... Also the augers- make sure the augers have some play on the shaft, and that the proper shear pins are in place. Get some spray (lithium or whatever) in there. If someone replaced a shear pin with a grade 8 bolt, or if the augers seized to the shaft and you hit something- breaking that front gear box may total the machine.

      Unfortunately the parts appear to be getting hard to come by. You can find common parts, such as shear pins, cables, belts, etc., but a transmission part could be tough. I would check ebay, or try to find a junk one that someone is parting out. Sorry, I am not much help there.

  • @l337pwnage
    @l337pwnage 3 года назад

    where I'm at, you're lucky to get a rusty pile of junk for $100, lol.
    One should always check the gearbox, at least on a machine you just got. I gave up keeping oil in my old Ariens(I think the stock lube is actually a kind of oil/grease mix), so I just pumped it full of grease. It's not like is a high speed precision gearbox.
    Older machines didn't have brakes, but I think I see something on the top that might be one. Either way, it's not fully disengaging.
    I had a brand new Ariens that did that. The belt guide was bent incorrectly causing the belt to grab sometimes. Because the blower had a brake, it made one helluva loud "bang" when it happened. Took me a while to track down the problem.
    The wheel is actually the oil guide for draining, you just gotta put the wheel in the pan. ;p
    I couldn't tell on that machine, but, usually, when there is a "freewheel" pin position, there is a second hole further in for "lock" so you don't have to pull the wheel out.
    Looks like a nice machine.

      Thanks for the insight. Yeah, I really believed there was going to be something wrong with it when I saw the price, but I guess it was just someone not realizing the value of what they had. I have to take a look at the brake, hopefully soon....

      The 10Hp has been replaced with a newer 6.5 Hp and it seems to be able to handle the weight and the auger.
      I did take notice the brakes for the auger is not working as well, and it is a bit sluggish in reverse and moving forwards in 1st gear.
      The rest seem to be working just fine.

    Great video. I just picked one up, also from Facebook Marketplace. This is my 1st blower. Quick question? When I was moving it, the tires were hard to spin as if they were in gear. Is there a gear the machine should be on when moving it around without the motor running?

    • @TheFixitShed
      @TheFixitShed  2 года назад

      The gears shouldn't matter. As long as you aren't holding down the drive lever, the rubber drive wheel should not be in contact with the friction disc. I would take the panel off the bottom and make sure the rubber wheel and disc are not in contact, and also check the chain. If that is rusted up, it could cause a lot of resistance.

      @@TheFixitShed I don't recommend using starting fluid on these small engines. Most often when they don't start with the choke engaged there is some other problem with the carburetor or fuel delivery. My landlord had me using it on his old Toro snowblower that had a lawn mower carburetor (no choke) installed by a neighbor because the original one leaked fuel. I wound up fixing it (bad needle and seat) and restoring the machine back to stock and it now starts on the first pull every time (no electric start). Good video shows how to grease that zerk fitting under the friction plate most owners wouldn't know it is there. That one hand lock piece is a pain in the butt on my machine it was jamming the wheel drive engaged at times. I removed it temporarily and have a new one on order (not cheap).
