This movie is a bit complex but to understand Taki and Mitsuha were not only switching bodies, but their consciences were also traveling through time. While the movie presents Taki and Mitsuha's days in each other's bodies, Taki himself would only experience the switch three years after Mitsuha. The reason Mitsuha is alive is because Mitsuha lived in 2013, before she died. That changed when Taki drank the sake that contained half of her soul. Suddenly, she revived in 2013, causing a butterfly effect.

Just to clear it up a bit, when Mitsuha met him on the Tokyo train he didn’t know her because he doesn’t “meet” her for 3 more years 😬 One of my favorite movies of all time. You should also react to A Silent Voice 😢
Some of the locations that appear in this anime actually exist. The stairs where the two characters meet at the end are located in Shinjuku and have become a pilgrimage spot.

Taki (who usually refers to himself with the informal masculine "ore") would appear to be acting very strange if he came in saying "watashi" (feminine) or "watakushi" (formal) to his close friends. They had to keep glaring until he got it right! 🤣
Japanese have different pronouns for men and women, essentially baking gender differences into the language. When Taki and Mitsuha switch bodies, ya can really hear which is which thru the words they use. 🤔

It's fortunate that Taki wrote _"I love you"_ instead of his name on Mitsuha's hand. Since memories are erased as consequence of the body-switching process (per Mitsuha’s grandma), his name would have been erased too. 2 supernatural occurrences are explained (Kataware-doki and Musubi), but a 3rd wasn't (Tsukiyomi - god of the moon). Tsukiyomi protects love. Feelings are not like memories. You can have strong feelings because of a dream, even if you forgot what the dream was about. Throughout the movie, the Moon was always there. If Taki had wrote his name, it would had been erased. But since it's his love, it stayed on her hand - and she remembers that feeling, even when she doesn't remember his name 🤔
BTW, Hollywood is remaking the movie with the support of the creator Makoto Shinkai - he wants to see Hollywood's live-action take on it 😀

The places in the show especially in Tokyo are actual places you can visit. The stairs where it ends is especially visited by fans.
Here to explain the "I love you" instead of his name. As they said before, when you enter in "the other world", you have to leave behind the thing you cherish the most. As for taki and mitsuha, their respective names. The "I love you" didn't get cancelled bc love things are proteced by the moon god. Same explanation for the cellphone notes and the town's name. A little tricky to understand to us which don't know japanese religion and culture
The cool thing is that many of the locations in this are exact replicas of real places in Japan. If you Google it you can find comparison shots of the anime and the real place.
should consider watching "5 centimeter per second" and after that "garden of words". both are from thr same director prior movies. both have some hidden little extras in your name. imho garden of words is even slightly better than your name only that its much shorter with only a runtime of 45-50 minutes.

As you said you still have a lot of questions in your head, I feel this is a good opportunity to write my own understanding of the plot, after watching and reading about this fantastic anime several times. Maybe this will answer some of your questions, and even if not, it's also just fun to write and by doing so, I'm forced to think about it more deeply than before!
Maybe it's a good approach to explain the story once from Taki's and once from Mitsuha's POV. Also, there are two timelines, the main difference being that in TL1, Mitsuha and and 500 others die by the comet disaster (it hurts to write that!), while in TL2, everyone is saved. As I understand it, TL2 overwrites TL1 completely, so TL2 is the one and only reality (yes!!) :D
*Taki's timeline*
His story starts in 2013, where 14-yo Taki meets an unknown girl in a train. She seems to know him, but he has no idea who she is, he sees just a "weird girl" who desperately tries to catch his attention. When he asks her for her name, she gives him her ribbon which he then keeps as a talisman for the next 3 years. The next day, Taki witnesses the beautiful meteor shower that everyone has been talking about for weeks. However, the meteor causes a big catastrophe - it crashes in a village and kills 500+ people. Taki has no idea that the "weird girl" is one of the victims.
Three years pass, and 17-yo Taki has forgotten the name of the girl, as well as the meteor crash. He only remembers that someone gave him the ribbon "a long time ago", and he feels he wants to keep it. One day, he wakes up in a girl's body and experiences a day as her. At first he thinks he's dreaming, but soon he notes that the body switches are real and happen randomly several times a week. He doesn't recognize the girl from the train as his switching partner, even after learning that her name is Mitsuha, because that train meeting was just a short moment in his life and he has forgotten about the circumstances. What he also doesn't know at first is that when he is Mitsuha, he is the Mitsuha from 2013, three years in the past, while the Mitsuha from his time (2016) is dead. This is also the reason why he can't phone her although trying several times.
When the body switches suddenly stop, Taki realizes he has started to fall for Mitsuha, and decides to go and find her in his time. With some help, he finally finds out the devastating truth - a comet has crashed Mitsuha's village Itomori and killed her and 500 others three years ago (2013). But Taki doesn't give up. He remembers that one time when he was Mitsuha, he brought her sake into a cave, and he also learned from her grandma that by drinking the sake, it might be possible to reconnect with Mitsuha. So he finds the cave which was outside the comet's damage zone, and drinks Mitsuha's sake, in desperate hope to get into her body just one more time.
And it works - Taki wakes up in Mitsuha's body on the day of the incident. (She has cut her hair, for the reason see Mitsuha's timeline.) This is also where timeline 2 starts, while all of the previous has been TL1. (In TL1, Mitsuha had been herself on that day - see below in Mitsuha's timeline). Taki realizes that the body switches have been a warning system developped genetically by the women of the Miyamizu family - after the last comet strike 1200 years ago, the Miyamizu women developped the ability to swap bodies with people in the future, with the purpose of being warned by someone from the future before the next strike happens. And Taki is exactly that person from the future! He wants to warn everyone, but realizes no one would believe him/her such a mad story - except for Mitsuha's best friends, Teshi and Saya. The three of them work out an evacuation plan based on a self-created bomb explosion which would frighten the people enough to convince them to leave Itomori. Still, he feels that the odds would be better if the real Mitsuha was there, and that's when he realizes that if he is in Mitsuha's body, then she should also be in his body, which is still in the cave near the village where he drank the sake.
So he hurries to the cave, and in this moment, when his desire for Mitsuha is at the highest, this is when Mitsuha's body trusts him with her memories about the day in 2013 when they met in the train - her desperation, her hope that he would be happy to see her, and her desire to meet him. Overwhelmed by experiencing Mitsuha's feelings, he cries her name - and gets an answer. He has reached the area around the cave, and they're both very close to each other in space - yet in time they're still three years apart (he is in her body in 2013, she is in his body in 2016). But as a happy coincidence, it becomes twilight, the time when the worlds intertwine (or in this case, the timelines). Taki, back in his own body, meets Mitsuha for the second time (and this whole scene is so cuuuuuuute
*Mitsuha's timeline*
Her story also starts in 2013, but a few weeks earlier than Taki's story. Mitsuha is bored by her life and wishes no more than being a handsome boy in Tokyo. And one day, she is! Like Taki, she thinks she is dreaming at first, but the more body switches follow, the more it becomes clear that everything is real. She enjoys being him, although it's not always easy, and she organizes a date for him with his crush, while he helps her being more popular and self-confident in the view of her classmates.
After a few weeks, she decides to go to Tokyo to meet the boy whose name is Taki. On her way there, she starts to realize her feelings for him, and although she doesn't know exactly where to find him, she's lucky to find him randomly in a train. However, the meeing becomes disastrous for her - she was so sure that he would surely recognize her as the girl who switched bodies with him, but sadly, he doesn't. Mitsuha also does not know that the Taki she swaps bodies with lives three years in the future, while the Taki of her timeline hasn't experienced any body switches yet. In a desperate attempt to establish a connection between them, she gives him her ribbon before returning to Itomori and cutting her hear because she's love-sick.
The next day, the comet reaches its closest position to Earth, and Mitsuha and her friends watch it together. But suddenly, the comet splits apart and crashes on Itomori, killing them and many others in an inferno.
The next thing Mitsuha experiences is that she wakes up in a cave in Taki's body (the start of TL2). At first, she doesn't remember what had happened, and she wonders why Taki has come here. But as she leaves the cave, she sees her whole village destroyed and now she also remembers her own death (which must ba an incredibly awkward feeling! ) It's when her desperation and loneliness is at the highest when she suddenly hears her own voice crying her name, and she immediately knows it's Taki in her body. This voice, breaking the unbearable silence in this moment, must have been the pure hope in Mitsuha's ears, and now (at the latest) she definitely falls for him. Luckily, it's about to become Twilight so they can meet despite the time gap. Back in her body, she learns from him about the evacuation plan he made with Teshi and Saya,
After twilight, she's back in her time and on her own to complete the mission Taki had started. Without the ribbon connection, she starts to forget Taki, but in a decisive moment when she falls and is nearly unconscious, his voice appears in her mind and she remembers that he wrote his name on her hand. But when she opens her hand with her last power, she finds that he wrote "I love you" instead. When she realizes that she's in love with someone, it fills her with new energy and makes her determined to survive. (Quote from the novel: "I know what's going on. I'm in love. And that's why I'll survive. No matter if a star falls from the sky, I will survive!") She manages to convice her father to evacuate the village just in time before the comet destroys the towm, so that TL2 overwrites TL1. (I find it very important to emphasize that - TL1 is overwritten! I don't want Mitsuha to be dead in any alternate universe!!
