There is another anime by the same studio that I just LOVE. It's called Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho [Beyond the Clouds, The Place Promised of Our Early Days]. I remember being so completely blown away by the animation as well as the touching story. But of course, another bit of a tear-jerker. Otherwise, the other anime romance that I really liked was from Rurouni Kenshin between Kenshin and Kaoru. From beginning to end, just pure dedication.

It is confirmed by the Makoto Shinkai that they got together, the couple also has a cameo in his other work. Community also made a theory that Mitsuha wanted to write 'I love you' as well. The way she started writing, the first stroke doesn't match the the way she writes hiragana for MI, but does for SU as in sukida (I love you). It was also confirmed by Shinkai that this is the case. The I love you on her hand didn't disappear, cause just like in after a dream when we wake up, we forget names, faces, situations, but we remember the feelings. Love is a feeling, that's why it stayed.

I still remember, when I watched this movie the first time I totally assumed that the price for them saving the town would be them not getting to get together again.
And I was actually okay with that idea for a moment (it seemed a fair trade in the bigger sheme of things and I'm usually a quite rational person)....but then the two of them started to go on about how they were always searching for something and how it made them basically constantly unhappy and they kept just missing each other. And I realized:
"No, no, I'm actually NOT okay with this! I NEED them to get back together!"
So when Taki finally turned around there at the end I was litteraly bawling my eyes out just out of sheer happiness!😭😭
This movie was the first one that made me truly cry (not just feel sad or tear up a little), it was the first time where I realized how relieving and cathartic it can be to just let loose and cry about a movie.
I've cried on many movies since then (out of happiness and out of sadness) but this one will always have a special place in my heart; not just because it is an absolute masterpiece on itself, but also because it was the movie that "thaught" me tor cry!

An interesting little fact about why Tessie acted the way he did when Mitsuha cut her hair, is that in Japanese culture, cutting your hair is a very huge deal. Cutting of hair has been a big part of their culture for a long time, for example, samurais used to cut off their top knot as a sign of them stepping down from their position. So when you cut your hair, its very much symbolism, which means an end to an era of someone's life, and the beginning of another. In Mitsuha's case, its her basically trying to move on from Taki.

Makes you wonder why even in western culture it kind of has become such a common idea, to imply a breakup to women cutting off their long hair?
I wonder since when this idea is even a thing...

    • @jamiea9047
      @jamiea9047 9 месяцев назад +1

@@tbakhalid4781 @ohnaminami @whitenoiseanimereacts I don't think this is the reason for the hair cut - Tessie makes the assumption that it is to do with a breakup, Sayaka says 'why do men always think that she scorns that men always make that assumption. I think the real reason is that Mitsuha usually uses her braid to tie her hair at the back, but she gives the braid to Taki in Tokyo so she no longer has the braid and decides to cut her hair short since she no longer has something (something meaningful to her) to tie it up with. Then when Taki gives her braid back to her she ties the braid over her head instead since her hair is now short.

It took them days to realize to figure it out that they were switching bodies because its like having a dream. You dont remember much of your dreams after several minutes you woke up right?😊

  • @zdiegi5493
    @zdiegi5493 Год назад +28

The "comet reveal" destroyed me twice when I watched it for the first time:
First, there was the emotional gut punch of realizing that the body switching had stopped because Mitsuha had literally died (and not because it was just a "magical comet" and once it was gone the switchingwould just have stopped because the magic was gone....which was 100% what I had assumed had been happening until that point😭).
And second, came the absolute mindfuck when it was revealed that the impact had happened 3 years ago (because not even for a SECOND did I think about the fact that there could have been ANY other aspect to the body switching than what we had been shown previously in the movie😮)

  • @richardpabey8545

You know, I’m obsessed with this movie because it gives you A LOT to think about. One of the things I love the most about this movie is the analogies to real life it uses.
First, it uses the Asian myth of the “red string of fate” to play with the idea of destiny. It is portrayed with Mitsuha’s ribbon during the whole movie to show how Taki and Mitsuha are attached (destined) to be together through this ribbon.
Second: the time difference is an analogy to distances and difficulty of finding that person who is destined for you. Taki and Mitsuha went through time and back to finally be together. Just shows all the sacrifices you must do to find your soulmate.
And third and my favorite one, the main idea of them forgetting their names, not knowing their names, represents every day life and the idea of romance that’s in our heads. Technically speaking, we all know the person we are destined to be with. We know how we want them to be. We know that person will be funny, charming, chivalrous, hard working, smart, family person, adventurous, etc… we know the person who is destined for us.. we know who that person is… but we haven’t met them yet… and therefore, we are yet to know.. their name…

The director Makoto Shinkai is known for movies without happy endings. I was bloody scared they would not meet again.
The stairs they meet up at in the ending is a real place.
J.J Abrams production company Bad robot owns the rights to make a live action adaptation of Kimi No Na Wa.

It is hard to pick up on everything in this movie on just one viewing. Here are some of the points that might not be obvious. Yes, Mitsuha's father is the mayor which we learn when he said "Mitsuha, stand up straight!". Perhaps the most difficult part is keeping track of who is in each body during the bicycle ride to the shrine. It is Taki in Mitsuha's body remembering the meeting in Tokyo when Mitsuha gave Taki the ribbon. When Taki's body wakes up in the shrine, it is Mitsuha who says "I'm Taki again". Not only that, she also remembers seeing the comet when it killed her. It is Mitsuha coming back from the dead. That is why she says "at the moment, did I die?" But Taki's body is still in 2016, three years after the comet. When Taki-in-Mitsuha arrives, he/she is in 2013 on the day of the comet. But due to the power the the god Missubi, they can hear each other through time. The background with one lake or two is the clue as to which year they are in. You can see the background switch as the camera switches between Mitsuha-in-Taki and Taki-in-Mitsuha. You can tell they are switched by what name they call each other with. Then when Twilight begins, two things happen at once. One is that they each go back to their own bodies. The other is that Taki's body is transported through time to 2013 to be in the same time as Mitsuha and they can see each other. This is the only time in the whole story when physical time travel occurs. Then when Mitsuha heads back down from the crater rim she is now fully Mitsuha, but now with the knowledge she got from Taki. That is why Tessie asks her "That think is going to fall?" she says "I saw it with my own eyes." And she is right, because this version of Mitsuha's mind is a continuation of the mind that actually did see the comet fall and died. By the way, you mentioned it is October right now. If you follow the dates in the movie you will know that "5 years later" is October of 2021. Then we see snow, followed by cherry blossoms, so it is then spring of 2022 and that is when Taki and Mitsuha finally meet. The director, Makoto Shinkai, has also said that they get married a year later - 2023.

Most of the things I was gonna say Robert said below, but one thing that I notice every time I watch this movie (that I didn't notice the first time either) is that when Taki calls Mitsuha and she doesn't answer because the comet hit, when you cut back to Taki, it shows a clear view of the sky multiple times to emphasize that they are not in the same time, or you'd see the comet. It's a great detail shown way before the time difference is exposed.
I was also surprised the "I love you" on Mitsuha's hand didn't make you cry more. It gets me every time 😭

Although a little different, “Weathering with you” also follows two teenagers with some supernatural elements mixed in. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Not sure if you know this, but "The Garden of Words" (Kotonoha no Niwa) is loosely the first film in this series. Both Takao and Yukari make cameos in "your name.". Yukari is Mitsuha's teacher, and Takao's cameo is during the first time Taki thinks he sees Mitsuha - he crosses right in front of her before Taki sees the ribbon. Also, the restaurant that Taki works at is "Il giardino delle parole", which is "The Garden of Words" in Italian.

This is because in Japanese mythology messages of love are protected by the moon goddess, so i love you stayed on her palm. Which is a very cute detail ))

A little explanation: Mitsuha's family devoted their lives to the shrine and tradition in Itomori but for generations it was unknown about the reason of the tradition because of the fire disaster grandma mentioned. The point of keeping the ritual and shrine is to prevent the demise of the people of Itomori, the shrine have a picture of the tiamat comet meaning it's already been put in a prophecy. The body swap is the gift of the god for Mitsuha's family and by extent people of Itomori for still keeping the tradition even when it's lost the meaning. Mitsuha's soul was sent to the future asking to help and where do soul attach? To the body of their soulmate of course! Mitsuha's soul asking for help from Taki in an indirect way. So I believe Taki and Mitsuha were always destined to meet because they're soulmates. The same thing probably happens with Mitsuha's mom and dad, and Mitsuha's Grandma and grandpa but they forget most of it because the danger was far away in the future, that's why Mitsuha's dad knew there's different person inside Mitsuha when she grabbed his neck, and Grandma also told that she have similar dream when she's young. Plus the I love You scene is particularly powerful since people don't remember others from what somebody said or do, but by how that person make them feel, that's why Mitsuha can keep going on and convince her mayor dad to evacuate.

(Sorry in advance for the long post) I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but at the beginning, the slicing of the tomato signifies that it's the next day, where Mitsuha was back in her body. I was very confused the first time I watched it too!
Something that the director/creator Makoto Shinkai confirmed later, was that after Taki wrote "I love you" (すきだ - sukida) on Mitsuha's hand, she was actually going to write "I love you" as well... you can tell because Hiragana (one of the Japanese alphabets) have specific stroke orders for characters - Mitsuha writes her "mi" with a curving downward stroke (we see that earlier in the film when she writes it on Taki's hand during her first time in his body), whereas she started a stroke from left to right, which is the first stroke of "su" for "sukida".
If you ever rewatch it, you'll notice that Tsukasa and Okudera both are wearing rings at the end. With Tsukasa it was when they were giving Taki crap for his suit in the cafe.
There's a physiological response that some people get with music in movies called "frisson" - one way it comes out is via "goosebumps"... there's a video about frisson on YT that I'd highly recommend by KindaNeet. Directors intentionally attempt to draw out those feelings that cause frisson because it's such a powerful feeling.
I'm so glad you liked it, because this anime changed my life. It got me into drawing art again, and making it my career.

I went on a trip to Tokyo last year and took some photos of some of the real life places from the movie. It is amazing how close they got to the real thing. If you have a social where I can post the pictures I'd be happy to share them.
Love this move and I'm glad to see other people enjoying it. Like I said above, the scenes in Tokyo are spot on accurate and, from what I've heard, the area in Nagano that Mitsuha's town is based off of looks pretty close to the movie as well. The small towns and countryside here in Japan are amazingly beautiful and they are some of my favorite places to visit.

This movie is a masterpiece. The director is kinda considered the modern Miyazaki. The concept of body swapping was a cool hook but the time twist was awesome. It's a movie that really does move you emotionally and I still cry even when watching reactions to it. I don't think it moves slow at all. You're just following the characters in their lives and then it ramps up when they have to save the town. Not only were her friends in the end there after they saved the town, MItsuha's sister was in a shot with her in a school classroom, 5 years older. The spagetti arms of Mitstuha is actually very "girly", if they aren't used to sports and running, IMO. Guessing someone else probably posted about messages of love not disappearing. They did call out the mayor as being her dad in the beginning of the movie when he was campaigning and called her out to stand up straight. Then they had the flashback with her story and dad leaving and going into politics, leaving the grandmother to raise them.
Japan is a very interesting culture steep in tradition and legends. I think that's why their stories are so rich, because they can pull from those ancient stories and put a twist on them. Excellent reaction. You didn't cry as much, but that's okay. I'll have to check out the rest of your channel.

1200 years before: Comet Tiamat is passing by earth and splitting while 2 parts hit near Itomori village. The larger one creates a hole, which would fill up with water and create Itomori lake. A smaller one hits a nearby mountain top and creates the place for the later to be found shrine.
Inbetween the local residents form Itomori village and the Miyamizu shinto priest family founds the vessel for their local deity in the nerby crater to honor the creation of their lake and village. The origins were painted on the inside of the cave, where they would worship their past.
200 years before: A fire sparks in the bathroom of a local resident named Mayugoru. The fire spreads over the village and also the local shrine, where the scrolls of the rituals where stored. The rituals and their meanings are destroyed at this incident and the Miyamizu family keeps continuing their traditions and rituals without knowing their true meaning.
    ...
Miyamizu Hitaba (Mitsuhas grandma) is having dreams of a stranger in her youth, but loses all of her memories. She never finds her "soulmate", but keeps going on passing the family traditions to her later born daughter Miyamizu Futaba.
Futaba is having strange dreams in her youth. One is a reoccuring nightmare of Itomori getting destroyed by a comet. Also she seems to switch bodies with an unknown stranger. A few years later she meets a young man from Tokyo, which she would fall in love "on first sight" and marry. She would later tell him about her reoccuring nightmare and that she knew she would marry him, when she first saw him, because she felt she knew him for her whole life.
Futaba would have two children: Mitsuha and Yotsuha. Some years later she will die to an unkown illness. Her husband never copes with the loss and leaves the shrine he is supposed to lead, because he was in love with futaba, not the shrine. The two girls stay with her grandmother, who would pass the Miyamizu shrine traditions on them.
September 2013: Mitsuha is having strange dreams in which she would live the live of a young boy named Taki, who lives in the city area of Tokyo. For a few weeks they keep switching their bodies while sleeping and living the other ones live.
October 2013: The day before the comet is getting at his closest to earth Mitsuha is visiting Tokyo and finds Taki in person, which does not recognize her. She is giving him her braided cords. When she gets back home, she asks her grandma to cut her hair.
The next day comet Tiamat is passing earth again and another part is splitting, which hits Itomori village which leads to its total destruction.
September 2016: Taki is having strange dreams in which he is living the daily life of a girl named Mitsuha, which lives in the rural area in the town of Itomori. For a few weeks he is switching places with her in his sleep. After a few weeks the switching suddenly stops and does not occur anymore. Taki is despereate to find Mitsuha and starts looking for a way.
November 2016: Taki has recreated a few pictures of Itomori town from his very blurred memory. He takes his notes and starts a one-day-trip to the rural area to find the city.
He learns, that the city was destroyed in the comet incident three years ago. The next day he is visiting the vessel of the local deity. He wakes up the next day without knowing, why he was there in the first place and returns to Tokyo.
Summer 2021: Taki has finished school and is looking for a job. He still has the feeling something is missing in his life and he keeps searching for something or someone.
December 2021: Taki expieriences a moment, where he would meet a women on a footbridge, but he feels weird asking a stranger out, so he just keeps going by.
April 2022: Taki sees a women on a bypassing train and feels, she is the one he is searching for. The next stop he is leaving the train and running to find her. They meet a few streets away and pass by. Taki finally asks her for her name.

      A few things aside:
      - The reason Taki and Mitsuha are forgetting their time in the other ones body is because "dreams are fading, after you wake up". It's part of the construct of time keeping itself safe, so they would forget each other.
      - The same things happened to other female members of the Miyamizu family in the past, accompanied with reoccuring nightmares of the town getting destroyed by a comet. Mitsuhas mother actually also found her "soulmate" years after her "dream time" and married him. When she met Mitsuhas father she had the same "feeling" of knowing that person, but doesnt know why, like Mitsuha and Taki, when they meet at the stairs.
      - The notes on Takis phone are disappearing for the same reason. They are a proof for time being distorted and therefor may not exist.
      - The ritual performed by Mitsuha and Yotsuha in the beginning is actually telling the story of the comet splitting and crashing on earth to create Itomori lake 1200 years ago. But because all of the rituals meaning was lost in the big fire of Mayugoru, noone knows that anymore.

    • @Sanktstefan
      @Sanktstefan Год назад +1

      - Taki knows, that writing down his name on Mitsuhas palm would not work because it would either vanish (as other messages they left) or Mizuha would not know, what the name is supposed to mean. Again time protecting itself. BUT as told by japanese folklore all true messages of love are protected by the moon god, so they would not be affected by that. By writing "I love you" he is leaving her the only message he can, to help and motivate her.
      - Mitsuha does also not try to write her name on his palm. When she finishes the day we first see her in Taki's body she is leaving her name and writing it with a downward loop at the start... But when she is starting to write on Takis palm while in "kataware" - the twilight - she starts with a horizontal line... Exactly the same way Taki did for the "I love you".
      - Mitsuha is able to convince her father of evacuating the town because when she enters his office she reminds him of his beloved wife and he remembers her telling him about her reoccuring nightmare of the town getting destroyed by the comet.
      - The reason Taki and Mitsuha are forgetting the other ones name after their meeting in Kataware is because of the "sacrifice". Remember, that place is the underworld and as Mitsuhas grandma explained in order to leave you have to sacrifice, what is the most important thing to you. For both Taki and Mitsuha after leaving that place, that is the identity of each other... They forget because they are the most important thing to each other.
      - In 2021 we see Okudera is married, when she is with Taki. She actually married Tsukasa, Takis friend and classmate. They became a couple after their trip to Itomori, where Taki ditched them at the inn and they returned to Tokyo on their own.
      - After meeting in April 2022 Mitsuha and Taki also get married later on (in 2024). They have a guest appearance in the movie "Weathering with you" by the same director, which is playing in the same universe.

The dance that Mitsuha and her sister Yotsuha perform in the ceremony was actually choreographed by some modern Kabuki dancers hired by the creator expressly for the film. The dance actually tells the story of the comet, how it breaks up, and has done so in the past and will do so again. In the story that meaning was lost, but apparently people who know kabuki who watched the film knew what was was going to happen. If you notice the town was built in a crater, and the "underworld" was also a crater, which had been formed a previous time 1200 years earlier when the comet came by and a piece broke off. Rewatch it and you'll pick up other threads especially if you pay close attention to everything they say. Shinkai is master at hints in his visuals, like seeing Mitsuha's friends and sister in Tokyo at the end but only in passing, but he is also a wordsmith, and the translators did a great job of making sure the English caught the clues from Japanese. This film should go down as one of the all-time greats.

As an individual that’s bilingual in English in Japanese, let me explain 12:42-12:50 for you in depth!
She as Taki said “Watashi” in a casual situation. That’s a very feminine term to use _casually,_ and I highlight that because men will use Watashi formally. Then, she jumped to an even stranger term for a teenager to use, “Watakushi” which is typically used by older or more experienced individuals, *NOT* a teen boy talking to his buddies. She realizes this from their expression and jumps to “Boku,” which is a moderately masculine term for self. This wouldn’t be wrong, if not for Taki himself. Taki isn’t really polite and boku is used in casual situations where someone is being a little more uptight or polite. Finally, she jumps to “Ore” which is much more fitting for a loud-mouthed, impulsive teen boy like Taki talking with his buds.

One thing I don't think enough people talk about is how uniquely Japanese this movie is. The issue of tradition vs modernization is a very big part of the Japanese discourse, and natural disasters as well are unfortunately quite a common occurrence in Japanese history and tie into a lot of the folklore. Obviously art is up to interpretation, but to me this movie seems like a heartwarming message of cultural solidarity across generations, genders, and more - a message that the bonds between people and places are stronger than their differences and stronger than whatever catastrophes may come their way.

There was a Japanese show that reflected on this movie sometime after its release as they noticed its popularity among the older generation keeping it in the movie charts (despite the film being marketed to young adults/teens). They invited some older generation folks to a special screening and placed cameras in the movie theatre towards the audience, then interviewed the people afterwards. Needless to say, many of the old folks were in tears, and noted that the "red string of fate" which is prevalent in Eastern oriental cultures was something they experienced in their own lives - like an invisible bond - some people said they met their spouse/soul mate or found something they were looking for.

In my mind, the town's Kami was working very very hard to save its people.
I like to think it was 'cheating' very hard to manipulate those threads of fate.

Every single person I have seen watch this forgot that the very first scene, in the opening credits, has them both as adults in Tokyo thinking about how their is something missing from their lives.

Did you get the version where they didn’t show that he wrote “I love you” instead of his name?
I can’t believe you wouldn’t have reacted to that if you saw it.

Also, when you saw Miss Okudara with his friend, you asked if they were going to get together, and according to the person who made it, yes they did.

I also do t think they were taunting the audience with them not meeting - I think they were trying to show that the universe was trying to bring them together, but as they didn’t remember each other, weren’t willing to take that leap of faith to say “hey, don’t I know you from somewhere” until eventually, they just said “I can’t take it any more, I have to know why she seems to be a part of me”

when "she" woke up at the start it was him but the scene shifts direclty into her being her again the next day. for people watching this the first time can go unnoticed as the shift is very fluid.

I'm a few days late to the party, but I'm glad I caught it relatively early. This is my second favorite all-time film, but tops in watching reactions. You're a pretty solid reactor, so this was a great watch for me.
You asked for some trivia. So, here's some trivia.
--Your Name was the highest grossing feature in Japan for 2016. Not highest grossing anime feature, not highest grossing domestic feature, it was STRAIGHT UP THE NUMERO UNO FLICK in Japan, making more than twice the revenues of the #2 film.
--Shinkai is a known perfectionist, and as such, he was still quite annoyed by his perceived shortcomings in the final product. When all of the major publications, both domestic and foreign, showered Your Name with unrelenting praise, he basically threw a tantrum and told the media to stop saying that the movie was good.
--All of the locations shown in Tokyo actually exist, and the staircase with the red railing where Mitsuha and Taki finally meet is now a fairly famous tourist spot, as fans from all over the world make it a point to visit it when in Tokyo.
--There are TONS of hints and giveaways sprinkled throughout the first half of the film that are easily missed on first viewing. When you back and watch a second/third/ninety-seventh time, you start to catch them all...things like Taki having a 2016 iPhone and Mitsuha having the 2012 model...consistent indicators of the switch like Taki walking pigeon-toed when Mitsuha is in him, or Mitsuha never wearing a bra or braids when Taki is in her...
--The restaurant name you were trying to catch, in Italian? Translated to English, "The Garden of Words." Little inside Easter egg, as "The Garden of Words" is Shinkai's 2013 animated feature. A much more prominent Easter egg pops up in Weathering With You, as both Taki and Mitsuha have minor guest roles, with Mitsuha's appearance being several hours before she meets Taki in Your Name.
Okay, this comment is now stupid long. Looking forward to more from ya!

This is such a good movie, and lovely to watch reactions to. Its beautifully put together, with everything building on top of each other. It just takes a while to find the right angle.
For example, Tessie mentions the lake is probably also a comet impact. So is the Shrine, it even has drawings of a splitting comet on its ceiling.
Mitsuha's grandma talks about Musubi, which also describes what's happening to her and Taki. She tells Mitsuha (or Taki?) that she has memories of switching places, or perhaps just dreaming of doing so. She mentions the big fire long ago, when the meaning behind the Miyazaki rituals was lost. Rituals like the braided cords (which represent time, but here also act to remind Taki of the shrine). The leaving of 'half your soul' at the shrine, as Sake. Which Taki drinks to meet/switch with his soulmate again. The secret meaning to the rituals is that they will help Taki do the last switch, which is what gives Mitsuha the strength to confront her father and save the village. It is amazing....
