    Now you only need:
    - Some ultrasound emitters to control the flame shape, especially to create an endpoint that does not look like a flame
    - A solid retractable core that withstands the temperatures, so the blades can actually clash with each other (and not just pass through).

I thought about it and that's a great idea. They don't need the core to be as thick as the saber since it's not for appearances, the flame/plasma around it will do that. It needs to be completely heat resistant (apparently tungsten is the best for that, though I don't know if that's an option) and tough enough to clash with things.

Or a metal blade with electromagnetic wave emitters (for example, UHF), those destabilize the crystal cells of hard materials (with resonance) on the blade's way, and ionize the air to create a plasma coating around the blade, which is held in the magnetic field. In Star Wars Legends Lore, way before the Skywalker Saga (like 10.000 years before Galactic Empire) the very first lightsabers actually looked like this and worked like Hacksmiths version. Jedi Knights had a PowerCell attached to their belts. The lightsaber was then connected with a powercable to the powercell on the Belt. Later the kyber crystal which gives power to the lightsaber was redsigned and added to the hilt itself. Thats the lightsaber we know from the movies.

I can see where this is going, more propellant to send the plasma to the general saber length, only problem is thermal dynamics won't allow you to do this safely. I think the hilt would catch fire/melt and you would use up fuel pretty fast. It shows me that a real working lightsaber with a magnetic field, proper heat and a strong enough power source is not within the realms of physics as we know it.

They should do this with the lightsaber: have it surround light metal with a high melting point to get the same slice and still get that “physical” element that lightsabers have when they clash, the metal could possibly raise in a column system similar to those cheap plastic “lightsabers” you find at Walmart, with the flame/laser rising around it & with it, just an idea.
