It's funny how false 3DR decided to diminish ZlimBratSki of everyone, but not Gman or even Civvie. I mean, those two has 1.2 million subscribers combined, they weren't willing to alienate probably 99% of their target audience, which says a lot about their lack of ethics and guts.
I disagree. I think if DNF had originally been released like this back when it was supposed to come out, it would've been met with critical acclaim. Yes, even with the bugs.
DNF is fine as a game. I'd rather play DNF than some of the utter trash we've gotten recently I'll tell you that much. And even with as many problems as Phantom Fury has, it's "not as bad" as DNF in that regard, though again I rather enjoyed DNF, so meh lol
Most level-headed review I've seen for this game. I'll definitely keep it in my wishlist if the devs actually manage to fix all the glaring bugs. Seems like a decent game to play if purchased on sale.
I know you're a super nice guy with rarely anything negative to say and/or are super respectful when you say it... HOWEVER, the truth is 3D Realms is cancer. I recall bringing up some criticism of their games in the past on Steam and were met with devs who were outright toxic in their response. The publisher has also grossly mismanaged multiple projects, exploited their customers with big box preorders, and just generally released crappy game after crappy game. So colour me not surprised with what's happening with this latest trainwreck.
@@michaeljedlowski4227honestly I think it's just okay too. It kinda just feels like a build engine game that'd you forget about. I'm glad 3d realms are around but, eh. I hope they take the money from this to make something good.
Hey! I appreciate your balanced approach to the review. Though Ion Fury was so good, it makes sense many people would be let down by Phantom Fury, including me. Nevermind the social media shitstorm
It's not a great game, but not as bad as many people are claiming. Buggy for sure, I lost all arm and suit upgrades after the horrible mini submarine level :/
Eyyy a shoutout to my man Zlim! Love to see it, though wish it wasn't in this context. Thanks for deciding to do a the review regardless, giving Zlim some love and addressing what happened in the best way possible, couldn't agree more. Terrible stuff from 3DR/SGI.
I kinda hate the driving sections. For example, i dont get why cars accelerate faster in reverse and overall seem faster in reverse. Or is it just me? I find driving forward very unsatisfying.
Damn. I remember playing a game that has that kind of driving quirk too. Not the "big rigs style" of uncapped top speed in reverse, but it has the quirk where, reversing is not beholden to the physics that driving forward does. Stronger acceleration and torque, nonexistent physics and collission, and full tire grip, meaning, you can literally reverse out of a bad situation, like getting stuck on a ditch or in between vehicles, and it's very much viable to use cars to climb mountains; just drive up trunk-first.
Shelly seems to have a curse to always ignite needless drama whenever one of her games launches. At least 2 out of 3 now. That aside, I've been liking PF so far, it's fun! IF sure is much better, but IF is better than pretty much most other retro/boomer shooters.
I think the studio needs to go back to basics and do something like ion fury vs duke nukem with ideas taken from alien Armageddon duke mod! That would be awesome to see
Favorite Boomer shooter channels? Civie 11, Icarus Lives, and yours. I haven't gotten this yet. It is on my wishlist, but I'm going to wait for patches and a sale.
Found this review via google, as I had no idea where was a sequel to Ion Fury (which I am currently playing on Deck and am in love with it). Given that I grew up on these games and have seen the absolute jank in early FPS games, I'm pretty sure I can handle a few crappy AI bugs in a game trying to replicate an era that had its fair share of wonky AI. Gunplay looks fun and honestly, I really like Shelly. Might wait for a sale before I grab it though. Thanks for the middle-ground review.
Thank you for the review (it's nice to see you enjoyed it despite its flaws) and for that great intro. I agree; even if the reviews were harsh, the developers and people behind this product should understand where those negative opinions came from and try to improve with their next title.
Man the franchise itself seems so jumbled. Bombshell was isometric like those old Nukem games, Ion Fury was a 90s throwback (and a prequel), and now this one is another retro shooter but not too retro to not have dazzling effects. I think it would be hard for a newcomer to get into this and not go "so where is this all going?"
Great review, and an even better, and powerful, opening statement. I barely have time to watch reviews and play games, let alone pay attention to adjacent drama that goes along with it... but unfortunately I got sucked in a bit a did pay attention this time. I have been watching you and Zlim for a couple years now and you two are very responsible for reigniting my love for 3d shooters. And even though I have interacted a lot with Zlim and not with you, its nice to know that the other creator I gravitated toward is a solid dude too. All that being said... I'll keep my eye on this game for the next several months and hope it gets some improvements/updates as it is right up my alley. If that point comes, I will jump on it. Thanks!
Civvie, Trav & Zlim are cool. I don't always agree with their opinions but they show that actually care & they take no pleasure in giving out bad reviews. As for the game itself, this is the most fair review I've seen. It's a 6 outta ten, could've been much more but Slipgate management gotta Slipgate. Still better than fucking Graven tho.
I mean you can talk about whatever you want on private discord, lets stop trying to monitor everyones opinion. People are allowed to vent does not need to constructive not respectful because it was private
Thank you so much for not being part of the cringe drama. It seems it also kinda hurt you, but you made an excellent balanced review. Thats respect. I think developers must adequately accept unconstructive criticism, but so do RUclipsrs. I want a normal review from a RUclipsr, and not a weapon to punish people who offend him or his colleagues. The fact that part of the community began to pretend like It's a new 'Hunt Down the Freeman' is super cringe imo (played it on release, guilty pleasure and it's nice).
02:38 - It's a thing about 3DRealms that, long have raised my eyebrow towards them. With this recent debacle, to vacuum up so much ip in such a short time, that it shot them in the foot when the bills come due, and it turns out, they can't decently fund half of them(very salty at them dropping Core Decay, and is currently very nervous about Tempest Rising)...it REALLY feels like 3DRealms attempted(and failed) to "speedrun" the success and prestige of the likes of New Blood Interactive and Nightdive Studios. Utterly missing the big point that, the success of those two came from their patience on building up their catalogues. I am genuinely baffled on what the HECK just happened. Cultic, Ion Fury, Ghostrunner...then, like a flip of a switch; Graven, Wrath, Phantom Fury. These recent three are not terrible games. But they are incredibly lackluster. What's frustrating about those recent games is that, each of them were so damn CLOSE to being another very good batch of titles into the retro-FPS roster, but but really feels like they've been rushed out the door. And let's not forget the Kingpin Remaster by the way...
Thx for the review, Kirk.Sad to see Slipgate deliver another Title with major technical issues, and after what 3DReals pulled off with Zlimbratskis hands-on with the demo, I think, that i´ll be passing on this one ... at least until it plops up for a Quid or two on Fanatical. And well, let´s say, that from now on, I´ll be thinking twice about whether I buy a 3DRealms Game at release or not...
Wrath and Graven are on my wishlist since a while ( as I prefered to go for games like Cultic before ), I'm interested by Phantom Fury since the day it was announced, as I liked the atmosphere from Ion Fury, but didn't enjoy to play it so much. Simple 3D is more enjoyable to me than complex 2D / complex 3D. More relaxing. I'm going to do like for Cyberpunk: wait for patches. And I'm sure AI problems could be solved, like vehicular sections. They might also add different enemies ? The arsenal looks dope. About the easiness, it means I might try another difficulty than normal this time 😂The thing that pleases me is the fact it's inspired by Half-Life, but more action oriented. I'm not a fan of enemies right now, like I wasn't for Half-Life's ones...If they can make enemies sneaky it could be fun. Like connecting them with a radio, and if one sees you, other ones would know, like in some Metal Gear's games.
Was glad to see you shout out ZlimBratSki. That guy puts in work and has made me aware of some great looking games that I haven't seen covered elsewhere and might not have found otherwise. Appreciate your thoughts on this one - I had high hopes for it and was a little deflated after seeing the early criticism for it because I wanted it to be excellent. I'm happy to hear that they worked on the shooting; it does look a bit more impactful in your footage than the earlier footage I'd seen. Looks like they've already issued the first patch, too, and although I'm glad to see bugs being squashed I really do hope they fix this one up right because Ion Fury really deserves a quality sequel. Love the attention to interactivity in this game but the bones need to be solid, boys! Prodeus doesn't have much you can interact with in comparison, but the shooting in that game is ohhh so satisfying.
Appreciate your take on the discourse that went down, as the days pass I regret keeping HyperVerse silent on it when we perhaps should have covered it as an impartial media outlet, but at the time it just felt like I was would have been gossiping about friends and made me feel.....icky. Fantastic review too Kirk ❤🎉❤
Im dissapointed that the game apparently isnt as great as we were hoping. Controversially while i do like retro shooters like doom and duke 3d I seem to enjoy games based off halo, half life, other early 2000s fps and doom eternal more. Its a shame we dont have as many quality games in this subgenre compared to the 90s doom and quake style games.
My major pet peeve with FPS games is when it is fast paced and you have to do a lot of backing up[ and you keep getting stuck on the damn enviroment and it causes you to get done in and this was terrible for that. Fun game but very irritating at times and quite clunky unlike the first game and feels a tad rushed but still a good game.
the running fov effect killed it for me. Got Motion sickness. Even if they implement, that I can deactivate that effect in the future I get instant sickness only from seeing the footage. Can't even watch your video sorry :(
The usual hypocrisy and crap from the boomer shooter crowd, the only good shooters are original DOOM and DOOM clones and that Half-Life ruined the genre and anything inspired by it is bad. When the reality is that boomer shooters are complete drivel, just mazes filled with braindead hordes, keycard hunts, and running in circles for hours trying to find x amount of obnoxiously placed secrets. I'll take games more like Half-Life, Tron 2.0, F.E.A.R., DOOM 3, Far Cry 1, Elite Force, Halo, NOLF, etc, over og DOOM clones any day of the week.
My favourite crater is the one in South Africa, the world’s biggest but no crater on earth can hold a candle to all the craters on the moon! (Why are we shouting out our favourite craters?)
I'm playing now and my largest gripe is the enemies. They're pretty boring. Mostly just guys with guns. I wanna fight aliens or monsters or robots or something badass. Not man with gun.
I don't appreciate you calling out Zlimbratski. He's Swedish and bald. None of us in his community like him anymore, as he's gotten big enough that he ignores all of us in his stream chats and tells us he hates us for requesting games all the time so he has content to post. Plus, he smells like salted licorice and pastries. Obviously, I'm joking lol Zlim is awesome. Been a subscriber since he has about 280 subscribers, so it's awesome to see his channel grow like Kirk's here. The whole thing with 3D Realms and Slipgate and the leaked Discord chats, I mean what can you say to that? Just, well not very professional let's put nicely. Zlim is always so positive and obviously has a good time playing games and interacting with us - not to mention he is VERY rarely negative in his reviews of games even when the rest of us would be much more negative. The fact he specifically got "called out" so to speak like that, it is what it is but it's very disappointing coming from a popular indie shooter publisher and a company that doesn't have the best track record with games lately.
Excellent review as always but I’ll say this…I would rather purchase and play a game like this with its flaws instead of wasting money and time on most “triple A” games that are released these days. These smaller developers don’t have to release perfection every single time to catch my attention because I,like a lot of others love these games!Long live the boomer shooters!
Come on now, 3DR and SI have done this time and time again. This is midsized corporate complacency larping as aw-shucks indie limitation of resources. If you like this game, more power to you, but they are hardly the underdog here.
The level design is one of the worst ive seen in games in general in recent years. thats why no patches will help this game. and no review mentioned one thing - in the 10 hour campaign there are 12 enemies, including two tank encounters, stationary turrets and one soldier with 3 different types of armor counted as three.
This game looks pretty fun in a "flawed but enjoyable" sort of way. The only problem is that it has to live up to Iron Fury but I'll look at this own it's merits, comparing games to only stuff in it's franchise is dumb dogmatic bullshit anyway, I am willing to most who do this probably play the same games over and over and then angry when you give their favorite game criticism.
If wonder if Capstone was around these days, would people also cry about evil youtubers shitting on their trying-ever-so-hard underdog? I am so angry at this company, and all the second-hand goodwill they abuse. Shit like this can and will tank a whole subgenre of games.
Not Capstone but this reminds me of Rex Blade: The Apocalypse. The dev wanted to spend 12-18 months making the game good with some advanced features, but was instead only given 45 days for the alpha alone.
I’m not sure on the specifics of what went down with the drama surrounding this game, but I will say I understand devs getting upset at the amount of criticism constantly being thrown their way by fans/reviewers for decisions not made by the devs themselves but instead made by their project managers/publishers. Especially over at 3DR, the comment sections under most of their trailers are super negative and not at all constructive from what I’ve seen. I feel like that must take a toll on the developers moral. I’m sure if it were up to the devs they would delay these games until the bugs/issues were ironed out instead of rushing them out the door then crunching to fix bugs in forthcoming patches. Feels kinda similar to what happened with cyberpunk. That being said there are some valid criticisms to be made here.
Game looks ok, i dont get whats so egregious about it. Mcmuscles put out a video that literally shows him having fun for 30 mins, says "hey its ok", and all of the comments were basically saying what a dumpster fire it was. Like they had watched a different video or something
Game setting, design, graphics and mechanics set up to play like late-90s / early-00s FPS shooter by intention; criticized for playing like and looking like an late-90s / early-00s FPS shooter... I don't have a dog in this fight (watched the vid' from 4:00 to 8:50), I haven't even played the game-- and only mildly curious about it, but not really any more though, but I have to say--criticisms like I alluded to in the first sentence of this post is exactly why more and more I've just been giving up on YT reviews.
When was the last time you spoke crap about any game? Never but that is your style. O0n the other hand 3D Realms is just a name that used to stand for great games and that is it, a company that has a name but nothing behind it.
@@mattc7420 He is allowed to have all the opinions in the world, but saying "people just like to talk bad about everything" when almost all the FPS shills dislike this game is more than a little dishonest. Or pray tell, was Civvie paid off by Big Zortch, and then shat on PF because 3DR failed to pay the protection money? If you like the game, that is one thing, but this amount of copium is just sad.
@@mattc7420 Oh no, 3DR ARE blatantly homophobic and transphobic. I know that... but Ion Fury was so damn good, I ignored it. This game isn't good enough for me to overlook their unprofessionalism. I'm hoping someone will mod it or fan patch the problems and make the game just a little better
It's funny how false 3DR decided to diminish ZlimBratSki of everyone, but not Gman or even Civvie. I mean, those two has 1.2 million subscribers combined, they weren't willing to alienate probably 99% of their target audience, which says a lot about their lack of ethics and guts.
They just released another failed Duke Nukem Forever version
I disagree. I think if DNF had originally been released like this back when it was supposed to come out, it would've been met with critical acclaim. Yes, even with the bugs.
@@ershnuffbut it ... wasn't released ... hence failure ...
News: Reviewer thinks Phantom Fury is "Just OK"
Best score yet!
What did you think of the first one? I played it twice and I still don't know how I feel about it....
@@michaeljedlowski4227 IDK, I never played it.
LMAO the Big Rigs school of vehicle handling
I always loved your reviews for a more nuanced view.
Shelly seems to have a curse to always ignite needless drama whenever one of her games launches. At least 2 out of 3 now.
That aside, I've been liking PF so far, it's fun! IF sure is much better, but IF is better than pretty much most other retro/boomer shooters.
No she’s is absolutely 3/3. Bombshell was a disaster and Fred Schreiber is a con artist
"Frame rate like a chugging slide show" is an instant all-time favorite for me.
I feel bad knowing that Phantom Fury ended up like Duke Nukem: Forever. :/
Duke Nukem Forever is a good game compared to Phantom Fury.
LoL not remotely
I think the studio needs to go back to basics and do something like ion fury vs duke nukem with ideas taken from alien Armageddon duke mod! That would be awesome to see
0:58 until 4:00 = 100% pure truth that everyone needs to hear.
Favorite Boomer shooter channels? Civie 11, Icarus Lives, and yours.
I haven't gotten this yet. It is on my wishlist, but I'm going to wait for patches and a sale.
It is not a follow up to ion fury its a follow up to bombshell basically different studio not the same as the one behind ion fury and aftershock
I have a good suggestion for a game review
Anger Foot review
Thanks for this video kirk. I still want to play this game it looks fun, just not at full price.
ZLIM RULES
Thank you so much for not being part of the cringe drama. It seems it also kinda hurt you, but you made an excellent balanced review. Thats respect.
I think developers must adequately accept unconstructive criticism, but so do RUclipsrs. I want a normal review from a RUclipsr, and not a weapon to punish people who offend him or his colleagues.
The fact that part of the community began to pretend like It's a new 'Hunt Down the Freeman' is super cringe imo (played it on release, guilty pleasure and it's nice).
On the other hand, if this super cringe makes 3DR not abandon the game, then maybe it’s worth it.
This game is awesome and not as a bad as the steam review says.
8,5 of 10 points
Hey, Kirk. With X-men '97 going on I suggest reviewing X-men:Ravages of Apocalypse.
Good suggestion! and oh my god that show is amazing.
So basically wait for it to go on sale
Thanks for the more balanced take on it! Had a feeling that some of the others might be exaggerating.
Definitely going to wait for The third patch before considering
Kirk, Civvie, and That Trav Guy are probably my favourite boom shoot tubers (I couldn't find a good way to open this comment)
The moral of the story is: don’t let people who take advantage of peoples hatred towards EA, be allowed to make a video game

I had a great time with Ion Fury , I’m hoping they fix this new Phantom Fury before it releases on consoles.
Sticking with Ion Fury/Aftershock. The exploding enemies in Phantom Fury aren't my idea of fun shooting/melee.
As if Ion is any better where they just stick 100 crab robots around every corner and on every ceiling
@@Spr1ggan87- Like the crab robots, reminds me of the little buggers in Powerslave.
Can't even watch your video sorry :(
There's camera shake option.

Another sick vid Kirk, love your work.
I wish the game was better because it looks great
The original design for the main girl was way hotter
Does it matter?
@@Moji55a of course it matters, what kind of question is that?
I dont know anything about the drama
The game looks so GODDAMN PRETTY, I love the "Old game graphics with modern enhancements" aesthetic. Too bad the reviews are so overwhelmingly bad
This game looks as I remember No One lives forever looking
My favourite crater is the one in South Africa, the world’s biggest but no crater on earth can hold a candle to all the craters on the moon!
(Why are we shouting out our favourite craters?)
Thanks for your opinion and review!
I'm playing now and my largest gripe is the enemies. They're pretty boring. Mostly just guys with guns. I wanna fight aliens or monsters or robots or something badass. Not man with gun.
It just looks so bland
Ion Fury is a bit frustrating to play and gunplay felt restrictive. Too bad phantom fury still falls short
I'm glad that so many good games are being made that it's not a choice between AAA or this anymore
Ion Fury was an excellent game. Not sure how we went from that to Phatom Fury which is at best 'generic shooter #827' territory.
I think PF's weapon roster is too boomer-shooter for it's HL almost-tactical-shooter pacing.
So basically it’s worth getting AFTER it’s patched. Of course typical modern devs. Fix an unfinished game after release.
they just can't make anything more than the faled duke forever, they keep making the same game
Slipshod Doesn'twork
The game is fine.
The devs are really unbalanced to "need to vent on discord" over criticism and the leaker is a douche to leak private conversations
I'll definitely skip it after all that stuff going on with Zlim. Maybe buy Aftershock, dunno yet.
Nice game
If wonder if Capstone was around these days, would people also cry about evil youtubers shitting on their trying-ever-so-hard underdog?
I am so angry at this company, and all the second-hand goodwill they abuse. Shit like this can and will tank a whole subgenre of games.
Not Capstone but this reminds me of Rex Blade: The Apocalypse. The dev wanted to spend 12-18 months making the game good with some advanced features, but was instead only given 45 days for the alpha alone.
It reminds me of YandereDev for some reason
After watching this I definitely want it. This is the style and type of game I grew up with. Need physical edition asap
still better than fafout seventy shejts
Yeahboy
This game sux so bad
