You missed out on some important stuff about VR. The Index is not Valve's first work on VR headsets. They actually teamed up with Oculus in early 2014, long before it was bought by Facebook/Meta. They also worked with HTC and created the HTC Vive with them, with demonstrations with prototypes going back to 2014 as well. Valve is one of the pioneers of modern VR headsets.

There is a conjecture that PC Games have influenced the PC market most, both when it comes to the Operation System of choice and when it comes to the insane improvement of hardware in such a very short time. So, with making SteamOS and brining it preinstalled on gaming devices, Gabe is also forcing the gaming market to port their games to linux (or at least work well with proton). Since SteamOS is free, Desktop Gaming PCs with SteamOS preinstalled will have a competitive advantage over Windows PCs. They will both be cheaper (as we're seeing with the Lenovo Legion Go 2) and possibly be faster (as we've seen with some Benchmarks with certain GPUs). At some point (I think before 2030) we'll see a bigger shift in the OS market, leading to many companies (like Adobe) releasing Linux versions of their software in order to not lose that section of the market just because their software doesn't run on linux. So, my guess for Half-Life 3 (HL Alyx 2?) is that's it's going to be a Linux exclusive. It'll run on Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go 2, and the release may even be coordinated with the release of SteamOS 3.0 and some manufacturers offering Desktiop PCs with SteamOS preinstalled.

Recent games that they have made are scientific experiments. Not every project is successful but since steam is making so much money, the money isn't an issue, they are doing it for science.
how do you ony have 700 subs????? your editigns great dude??? AND you went through the effort of adding chapters and subtitles??? your are so underrated???
To think, 13 years ago, and I quote from wikipedia: Valve has indicated displeasure with the approaches that both Microsoft and Apple are taking with their respective operating systems, limiting what applications could be run, and upon the release of Windows 8 in 2012, Valve's CEO Gabe Newell called it "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space", and discussed the possibility of promoting the open-source operating system Linux that would maintain "the openness of the platform". And it's bloody working! In a couple of days it'll be a year since I switched to Linux from Windows 10, and there hasn't been a game I haven't gotten to run one way or the other, and that's the only downside: sometimes you need to approach problems differently to get something working. Mod managers for example aren't always the easiest to get working as intended.
10:35 The thing is, Steam doesn't usually get that money at all. They give all that 15% market fee to the publishers (the ones you see when checking a steam page for a game). Although yes, in games like CS2 or TF2 they get that 15% cut since they ARE the developers, in any other game that wasn't developed or published by them, the cut goes straight to the publishers. For indie devs and other dev studios that self-publish their own games through steam, it can help them fund more content, and since even steam cards have that cut, it's kind of a brilliant marketing strategy, because if the game gets enough funding and the dev team of that game makes more content: More content = New sales New sales = More Money for Steam and the game publishers More Money = More Funds And More funds = More content And the cycle repeats on and on. The only catch is that the game DOES need popularity and sales in order to make the cycle repeat. But that's just another way Valve makes it up for devs that use Steam.
Well, when Gaben used Windows 8 he saw the downfall coming, so Valve started to develop SteamOS and the Steam Machines... All lead to the Steam Deck and that is leading to an overall better gamin experience on Linux (system SteamOS is based on). I'm very interested in Lenovo's next handheld console with SteamOS, the first of many.
gabe also brought gaming to linux it initially sort of failed game companies were porting games slowely. this was in the era of the steam machines. dont get me wrong there were a lot of gaming possible at that time on linux. years went by and linux gaming were sort of in a standstill until a guy made DXVK to play Nier Automata on linux which caught gabes attention. it spawned Proton which revolutionized linux gaming and made it viable. then the result of all of this was the steam deck. in the future valve + linux i believe might mean a standalone steam VR headset where you can play full pc vr. Really great video, just wanted to add more details :D
the advances that happened due to proton also goes far beyond the proton compat layer as well. they sorted out several quirks in different areas via helping third parties. the proton compat layer really is a beautiful thing since it means pc games isnt dependent on 1 OS brand.
if anyones seen the movie the Founder I think it strikes some similarities to gabes strategy. He would rather own the land the burger is cooked vs making the burger for other people. A really simple concept but very hard to execute.
when Gabe made Steam Deck, he listened to the problems of every gamer and put them on Steam Deck. For example you can put games on Micro SD. You don't need to download games for Steam Deck if you have it on your computer, just connect it with the same connection on your PC and the games from your PC will be transferred to your Steam Deck. You can do Upgrade storage and get permission from Steam itself. You can do Custom Rom OS Steam Deck like whatever you want. he is not like a game businessman but a gamer who becomes a businessman, he listens to all complaints and fixes complaints from gamers that they have felt so far
If you listen to the developer commentary on the Half Life games, you'll come to understand that the Portal games were self-deprecating humor about valve's office. These people made a literal botnet supercomputer hivemind out of their entire office just to render raytraced lighting in the year 2000 so they could bake it into HL2.
correction, Half-life didnt pioneer single player with heavy emphasis on story, that title belong to metalgear solid and it was even released before half life. however half life pioneered first person survival story driven game where the player is the character
from what I understand, Gabe's investment into neural network technology is the sort of thing that would let you use a mouse and keyboard setup by thinking you're using a mouse and keyboard without needing a mouse or even hands
Not really sure how I should feel about his brain computer interaction... It might sound interesting but I wouldn't like to have permanent injury from a bug or someone who hacked my pc. I guess if it ever comes out, it'll be a very niche and probably won't survive. I would be surprised if there would be no health risk.

12:19 you can play HL Alyx on any SteamVR compatible headset, e.g. a quest 2 using a "link" cable with a pc
To think, 13 years ago, and I quote from wikipedia:
Valve has indicated displeasure with the approaches that both Microsoft and Apple are taking with their respective operating systems, limiting what applications could be run, and upon the release of Windows 8 in 2012, Valve's CEO Gabe Newell called it "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space", and discussed the possibility of promoting the open-source operating system Linux that would maintain "the openness of the platform".
And it's bloody working! In a couple of days it'll be a year since I switched to Linux from Windows 10, and there hasn't been a game I haven't gotten to run one way or the other, and that's the only downside: sometimes you need to approach problems differently to get something working. Mod managers for example aren't always the easiest to get working as intended.
very high quality videos for such low subscribers, get this man to 100k! atleast!!
I like the quality of the video

The thing is, Steam doesn't usually get that money at all. They give all that 15% market fee to the publishers (the ones you see when checking a steam page for a game). Although yes, in games like CS2 or TF2 they get that 15% cut since they ARE the developers, in any other game that wasn't developed or published by them, the cut goes straight to the publishers.
For indie devs and other dev studios that self-publish their own games through steam, it can help them fund more content, and since even steam cards have that cut, it's kind of a brilliant marketing strategy, because if the game gets enough funding and the dev team of that game makes more content:
More content = New sales
New sales = More Money for Steam and the game publishers
More Money = More Funds
And More funds = More content
And the cycle repeats on and on. The only catch is that the game DOES need popularity and sales in order to make the cycle repeat. But that's just another way Valve makes it up for devs that use Steam.
Holy yapping I did
Only 845 subscribers is absolutely criminal for these kinds of channels.
1:45 because as a father he has to take care of his son
Well, when Gaben used Windows 8 he saw the downfall coming, so Valve started to develop SteamOS and the Steam Machines... All lead to the Steam Deck and that is leading to an overall better gamin experience on Linux (system SteamOS is based on).
I'm very interested in Lenovo's next handheld console with SteamOS, the first of many.
16:48 "and in my opinion, an underrated one" lol come on. I love gabe but the internet dickrides him so hard, it's impossible to call him underrated.
Very well made video!
gabe also brought gaming to linux it initially sort of failed game companies were porting games slowely. this was in the era of the steam machines.
dont get me wrong there were a lot of gaming possible at that time on linux.
years went by and linux gaming were sort of in a standstill until a guy made DXVK to play Nier Automata on linux which caught gabes attention. it spawned Proton which revolutionized linux gaming and made it viable.
then the result of all of this was the steam deck.
in the future valve + linux i believe might mean a standalone steam VR headset where you can play full pc vr.
The fact gabe spends his current free time fantasising about sword art online. wild...
Don’t forget about steam is potentially becoming a desktop image to replace windows.
if anyones seen the movie the Founder I think it strikes some similarities to gabes strategy.
Cant wait to get ads beamed directly into my brain
the editing on this goes hard
Gabe's Brain Computer Interface is the equivalent of "my goals are beyond your understanding".
been thinking about gabe a lot lately... hes such a sweetheart...
wow this is a really good vid, i'm shocked by how little views this has
Great video!
Gabe really said: "Let's go gambling!"
3:28
TF1 was a mod for a different game, Quake
7:56
TF2 was made in 2007 not 2009
alas, a new independent channel rises, and shines, as people enjoy it's content
rise and shine, new channel.
*Rise and Shine*
correction, Half-life didnt pioneer single player with heavy emphasis on story, that title belong to metalgear solid and it was even released before half life. however half life pioneered first person survival story driven game where the player is the character
from what I understand, Gabe's investment into neural network technology is the sort of thing that would let you use a mouse and keyboard setup by thinking you're using a mouse and keyboard without needing a mouse or even hands
Gaben is going to take over peoples minds like Plankton in the SpongeBob Movie
only ~700 views is criminal
Gabe Newell be like
"Im limited by the technology of my time"
Enjoyed this video
Awesome Video
Not really sure how I should feel about his brain computer interaction... It might sound interesting but I wouldn't like to have permanent injury from a bug or someone who hacked my pc.
I guess if it ever comes out, it'll be a very niche and probably won't survive. I would be surprised if there would be no health risk.
I hope Gabe become more slim and healthy again like his prime form when working at Microsoft.
