Idk why you took the time to post this but I'll take the time to comment to it

I always respect Houser brothers for one thing. They don’t come out publicly and say that they started from the bottom and created GTA. They were clearly from privileged backgrounds and were well connected. They understood the effort their teams are putting into each game and took all the credit to the Rockstar name. That should be respected.
you dont get respect bc you do your job. sorry. that is literally the bare minimum
So you have a lot of respect for them for not publicly lying?
Being honest and grounded is arguably the bare minimum.
@@martinlutherkingjr.5582I mean, yeah
@@martinlutherkingjr.5582In this economy?
I used to work at T2/2K for a few years, there was always a friendly rivalry with our sister company Rockstar. It's awesome to see such an in depth documentary out about GTA and the companies that made it.
If only they weren't so greedy now. I mean have you seen how much they've been fucking up lately, they half assed the GTA trilogy, they won't stop milking GTA online and most of us are sick of GTA 5 now, RDR2 got abandoned even though it had so much potential for its online mode, and now I'm worried they're gonna milk GTA 6 once they make the online mode and then they'll get more greedy. I'm sorry man but Rockstar has become the very thing they made fun of and I hate it. You gotta at least admit they're not the same old rockstar anymore.
They aren't a sister company. Take 2 were the money men and they bought out Rockstar.
@@rogueraccoon1840 GTA 5 is still good games LOL throught & throught for me atleast. Honestly, I come to RDR 2 because of the singleplayer not online mode
@@rogueraccoon1840just wait until their loyal customers have to p2p for x amount of time. 🤑
@@rogueraccoon1840when will you people learn that gta online is the price for amazing games like gta 6
This is some quality content right here: one hour of pure gold and deep analysis of Grand Theft Auto. This is exactly what I was looking for
Vice City was my Rockstar Games peak. Love IV and appreciate the graphics of V, and I also grew up with San Andreas, but Vice City is my life. RIP Liotta
GTA V eventually added so many weird and wonderful aspects and items to the game over time, it makes me wonder where GTA VI can go; it has some MASSIVE shoes to fill.
GTA VI is going to be the game release to top all game releases.
Never thought I’d see something like this on this channel! Dude you make top tier videos on all subjects. Cannot wait to watch this
I think GTA V only has that big jump in sales because people like me that have bought gta 5 like 4 times on various consoles
Exactly, the numbers are inflated because it’s been sold to around 40m people 4 times so it doesn’t count in my opinion
That's underscores just how good the game is.
@lolly_bread kindof but it also might underscore that it took so long for them to release a new one and its all people had for a decade plus
@@BreadLobbynah cause if it sucked we wouldn’t buy it multiple times, we’d get bored. Same as Skyrim
@@thefirsttrillionaire2925 i dont think it sucks now okay
Fascinating and thorough, absolutely loved this deep dive, John; you're an incredible story-teller with perfect cadence, delivering with a clear, confident and auditorily pleasing voice; I could listen to you speak for hours. A small word of advice, take your time, remember to breathe. Thanks for this study, can't wait for next!
I dont know when i watched this long informative content on youtube in one go....amongst the top videos i ever watched
Chinatown Wars is so good. This guy said “don’t worry about it” 😂
finally smth worthy to watch, keep making bro, i love your content
Big amount of research went into this video for sure! Thanks!
Genious video. Almost all of us are gamers and we're interested to see the stories behind all of our favorite companies. This could turn into an exciting new series of videos. Appreciate the in depth research too, excellent work (I used to have an Amiga computer and I remember early DMA games with Psygnosis back when I was a kid)
10/10 for the research, production, and pacing! Keep it up John!
3:15 I told my uncle the same back when I was 7… He was so concerned & told my parents… but see what became of me now. After I served 10 years, I found out that life as a bank robber pays off at the end, after you get outta jail & recover the hidden money. The bad part is, my wife married my brother Max & they have two daughters now. Sometimes it‘s so weird to see em all together, but then again, I lived through so many cool things in life, met awesome people in jail & married some hot Model (now an OF model), while in jail. So I can‘t really complain about anything.
All trolls aside. I‘m a writer now & I love creating things. And damn I have some freakin cool bank robberies in my stories. When GTA4 came out on PC, I modded the hell outta this game & filmed, voiced & created my own Bank robbery. Still have an early version of that on my HDD. But I really did tell my uncle that I wanna become that, but what I really meant is that I want my fictional characters to do that instead xD I‘ve been working on my stories since I was a kid. Some of the main characters still got their names from when I‘ve created them in early 2000. It‘s been a long way for me & my characters. I changed the story like a 100 times now. To answer some of your thoughts: My stories are actually deep stories, not like the troll text above ✌🏾
Anyways, such a great documentary! Thank you for that. I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful day
Is there any way I can see the bank Robbery in ur hdd?
I’m so excited to watch this one. You deserve all your success John
Completely watched the full video
Great to have good content back on this channel
Keep it up🎉🎉
I'm always here for John Coogan marathon uploads.. Epic stuff
So, I walked about 5 miles listening to this video, not even watching it, and my mind was lost in it, conjuring up images of the old GTA games and how my entire childhood was wrapped up in it. And now I know the crazy story of quality obsessed brothers behind it.
The walk is usually intense as I use a weighted vest , but this one was a breeze.
Thanks John, this was emotional and nostalgic. Keep creating stuff like this.
One of the best long-form videos I have ever seen on RUclips.
This is very well made! I’ve watched a ton of these videos and I learned a lot from watching this. Very well made mate!
Such a great video with amazing quality. I hope it reaches a wider audience!
Absolutely fantastic documentary :) This channel has become one of the best on YT
Your best video to date! Research and craft shows!! Well done.
This was awesome! I think your best video yet. Good job bro!
Love you branching out, hope the video picks up some traction!
Massive video! I watched the whole thing. Looking forward to more videos like this
You have such a good channel. Straight gold John, keep it up
John! This is so awesome! I turned this video into RUclips short clips & wrote a newsletter issue on it, sent you an email about it. I literally love all of your content :))
I've been saying for a long time that nowadays the line between reality and GTA-style social satire is indistinguishable. I'm honestly shocked to read that 2018 Dan Houser quote again. Man is incredibly smart, he saw it coming. I mean, *imagine* that you spend 15 years writing some of the most outrageous shit you can think of and then you watch reality slowly bend itself to become what you wrote. What a time to be alive...
My favorite youtuber with my favorite game! Love it already :))
I really appreciate how you deep dived into this one.
Great movie! Brings many memories. Born 92. It was cool to see how these titles grew behind the curtain and how these companies grew. Great job!!
one hour, ten minutes and four seconds, okay let me watch quality content.
Great video John! Amazing storytelling. I learned so much about R* and T2.
Exceptional documentary. Rockstar definitely had an impactful part of my early life. When GTA3 released, it was so mesmerizing and intriguing to me, I played it at 5-20fps avg on a business gateway computer. I finished the game later on with a gaming pc.
Unbelievably thoroughly done. Super good. Awesome polo BTW, drop a link to it if possible
Very well made video this is the type of content I love from your channel
Bro I listened to this on Spotify. Now there’s a video for it. Yess!
I’ve been playing GTA since 3 came out. Needless to say, that game set the standard for what games strive for today. Over 20 years later and GTA continues to exceed fans expectations. They listen to their fans, and continue to push the envelope. It’s been over 11 years since GTA V and that game is still amazing. Can’t wait for GTA VI, I have 0 doubt that Rockstar will deliver and continue to exceed expectations
2:40 Newcastle, not London. Carter works in London, but the film takes place in the Newcastle/Gateshead area as Carter travels there for his brother's burial and to find his killers.
So incredibly inspiring. Both the Houser brothers and Benzies and everyone else who was at the core of Rockstar during those years. I wonder if the opportunity to create similar magic is still there at this moment in time, because Idk about how many others, but I'm sure as fuck inspired to take on similar creative endeavours, so a video like this is highly appreciated.
Amazing storytelling. I was engaged through the entire video, a rare thing these days!
Amazing content. Thank you a lot
your research is impeccable, love it!!!
This was very well done. Thank you.
OMG we're in for a treat! But more than 1h; i'll keep it in my "watch later" list. This will gain views in the long run! Cheers!
The most underrated RUclips channel.
Something really different from other CC's loved it!
love your content bro, keep it up, you´ll be huge
It’s rare I watch an entire hour RUclips video and listen to every word
Great video I appreciate the effort you put into this
Awesome video. Thorough, engaging, well-informed.
just listened to your Strauss Zelnick episode yesterday so this is perfect timing-let's go Coogan
Bro i love your videos. we need more videos so upload every week
Love this channel!
Vice City will always be my favorite. I played it with my cousin every day after school for hours. RIP homie. It's the last version that I ever played.
Coogan never misses, what a rabbit hole.
We got to understand the business model before we got GTA VI
I genuinely always wanted to watch a video like this
New subs i love the documentary and how you talk and the body language is perfect 10/10
Your video is well researched. Definitely getting a like
Great video! Would love to see you do a video on Jim Simons Renaissance fund
I really enjoyed this video thank you for making it keep it up.
Correction: Cyberpunk’s launch was not disastrous that resulted in it being considered a failure. There was just mass controversy and backlash. The game at launch was a financial success and was immediately profitable even after they allowed refunds for all console sales.
Same story with NO MAN’S SKY and LAST OF US PART 2 People commonly think those were disastrous launches, but they were all financially successful.
Fun Fact: THE LAST OF PART 2 actually sold even better due to all the controversy surrounding it. It’s speculated that all the noice attracted the attention of casuals outside the fan base who would of normally ignored it.
youre one of the best storytellers of all times!❤
Nice! Still remember me and my cousin playing gta 1 & 2 frenetically!
This inspired the hell out of me! 🤯 Thanks John🙌
GOD MODE channel. The accurate is impeccable!
Still remember that first time playing GTA Vice City right after high school. 18 and going what in the hell is this! The soundtrack, stories, missions, been hooked ever since
Great video. I clicked with a "I probably know this, but I'll watch/listen anyway" attitude. Glad I clicked because I was wrong and there was a LOT I didn't know.
Love your commentary
very well researched video! ty
Now *this* was a great video!
Incredible video! Little correction, the Ferrari in Vice City was based off the Testarossa
Body Harvest wasn’t cancelled. It released. Just not with the launch promotion expected.
Race’n’Chase was never multiplayer.
This guy didn't do research for this video, he just read some wikipedia short descriptions and a dozen of articles, he didnt make the effort to understand the topic, fuck, i think this video's script was generated by chatGPT
@@eunaoseibrother467 For real. Folks are in here in the comments gushing over how researched things were when there are significant factual errors.

I have to say I'm very impressed with how the video is constructed, and your knowledge of video game business history! Did you just do research on your own? Do you come from, or work for the industry?
Great video! I’m really impressed you included sign language for deaf viewers
The Bertelsmann CEO later went to jail for embezzlement and is overall an idiot.
Good Video John.
Now this video is different from the previous one
This was awesome interesting. Thank you!
Wow, such incredible research. Do you have notes or a book recommendation? I tried taking notes but youre soo thorough in your research.
Great video!
Please do a similar video breaking down A24. This is incredible.
Awesome vid. May be interested in checking out FromSoft Hidetaka Miyazaki next. Miyazaki's Wikipedia article is unbelievable, dude made such an awesome game they just put him in charge of the company.
Well done Sir, you produce great stuff and are a natural presenter. I’d love to see your spin on Cyberpunk, I know it’s been done to death but I’d love to see something focusing on how CDPR changed due to the disastrous launch and the subsequent backlash.
Especially the staff dealt with the backlash and how the company changed its structure to ensure - and give reassurance to us fans - that’ll never happen again
always wondered exactly why gta was so insanely popular, thanks so much!
I really enjoyed your video, very thorough and the clips bring it all together. I’m sure you spent a lot of time creating this… I also really like the background music you chose. What’s the song at 50:00 called? Is it one of the free RUclips samples that are copyright free or something else? Also… I love Soylent!
Very well done video.
What I like the most about the creators of GTA is that they already imagined the game being a movie that you’d take part in it. However technology was not there yet. This is 1997. Fast forward to 2015 and you have the masterpiece GTA is.
Great video. Watched in 1 sitting. Thank you Rockstar
We're a fan of this channel
when I was a kid, my dad got me and my little brother a playstation. it was the grey one with the pop up cd tray and all the discs were black plastic, not metallic. I remember that topdown map, it was the version I grew up playing. I believe I was on that first gen around when 5 released, and I was like,,, 10-13 at the time. I only just got into 5 around 2 years ago, its insane how much I didnt there was to these games as my prior context was as a thoughtless child running around the map haha. its like I'm learning about an event I didn't know I experienced.
thank you for compiling all the history and "lore" lol of the GTA series into one video. it was very nice to watch while studying, and genuinely v interesting : )
Love your content ❤
