I always respect Houser brothers for one thing. They don’t come out publicly and say that they started from the bottom and created GTA. They were clearly from privileged backgrounds and were well connected. They understood the effort their teams are putting into each game and took all the credit to the Rockstar name. That should be respected.

So, I walked about 5 miles listening to this video, not even watching it, and my mind was lost in it, conjuring up images of the old GTA games and how my entire childhood was wrapped up in it. And now I know the crazy story of quality obsessed brothers behind it.

They listen to their fans, and continue to push the envelope. It’s been over 11 years since GTA V and that game is still amazing. 3:15 I told my uncle the same back when I was 7… He was so concerned & told my parents… but see what became of me now. After I served 10 years, I found out that life as a bank robber pays off at the end, after you get outta jail & recover the hidden money. The bad part is, my wife married my brother Max & they have two daughters now. Sometimes it‘s so weird to see em all together, but then again, I lived through so many cool things in life, met awesome people in jail & married some hot Model (now an OF model), while in jail. So I can‘t really complain about anything.
All trolls aside. I‘m a writer now & I love creating things. And damn I have some freakin cool bank robberies in my stories. When GTA4 came out on PC, I modded the hell outta this game & filmed, voiced & created my own Bank robbery. Still have an early version of that on my HDD. But I really did tell my uncle that I wanna become that, but what I really meant is that I want my fictional characters to do that instead xD I‘ve been working on my stories since I was a kid. Some of the main characters still got their names from when I‘ve created them in early 2000. It‘s been a long way for me & my characters. I changed the story like a 100 times now. To answer some of your thoughts: My stories are actually deep stories, not like the troll text above ✌🏾
Anyways, such a great documentary! Thank you for that. I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful day

Same story with NO MAN’S SKY and LAST OF US PART 2 People commonly think those were disastrous launches, but they were all financially successful.
Fun Fact: THE LAST OF PART 2 actually sold even better due to all the controversy surrounding it. It’s speculated that all the noice attracted the attention of casuals outside the fan base who would of normally ignored it.

The ESRB is NOT "the government." It's a self-imposed industry rating board. It's literally the private gaming companies themselves rating their own industry, a result of moral panic about video games and other media in the 90s. At least as far as the ESRBs actions within the gaming industry. Essentially they had to self-regulate, or the govt was gonna come down hard. And they aren't some ultimate deciders of whether a game is allowed to be sold, definitely not these days. Anyone could release an unrated game if they wanted to. It varies by country but there's ZERO requirement that your game HAS to get passed by the ESRB.
Makes me wonder how much other info was wrong lol.

Thanks for the history lesson and I’m sure for time sake you didn’t expand on the RP aspect of GTA online but I think it deserves a little more than a foot note. GTA RP is the reason for the intake in sales when it was starting to decline in 2020. With RP fans and none fans alike now enjoy a second life outside of their normal existence, RP has made a whole new aspect time GTA that was once thought about in the original concept for gta. You get to become a police officer! A Medic. A nurse. A mechanic. And the list goes on! Perhaps if you haven’t already, do a video and deep dive into the world of RP!?

DJ Pooh was brought on to help write the story of San Andreas. By this point they had help. Which paid off big time. IV also had help I believe. V for sure. Their team has grown beyond the brothers. Well, Dan leaving was definitely a huge loss and avoidable imo. But not really. Money was always gonna triumph.

Great overview. Just one correction-the ESRB isn't a government agency. It's a voluntary non-profit organization and system that game developers and publishers choose to take part in. It's sort of like the MPAA for movies. It was established in 1994 as a response to congressional hearings in the US that questioned the violence in games like Mortal Kombat, Nighttrap, and DOOM. While it is completely voluntary most publishers in the US, Canada, and Mexico submit their games to its ratings process. It's considered one of the most reliable self-regulatory non-profit orgs by the USA's Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

I think part of the franchise success on the 5 is: children who played and couldn't afford the game now can and will since they're adults.
as for mobile: it's a competitive market .. they kinda will have to release a GTA for mobile with all the S+ tier game stats and a gatcha mechanics if they want to compete now, ofc being playable on phones, consoles and pc is a must. Gatcha with realistic graphics are possible on phones, it's kinda like what they already have but free to download

i am old, just a few years younger than the boys who made the first GTA game "Race & Chace" and i have played all of their games even bought GTA: London. and i still remember then GTA III launched and how we installed a MOD so we could play multiplayer. but it was little more than 1 second out of sync. the netcode from the mod was not good. but still super fun. cuz that what we all talked about in GTA III that we wanted multiplayer then we played PC games in my parents basement, the old school LAN Party´s. But i can say, sense GTA III i play the GTA Games for the story, i want to know and experience the story, same with Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2, i love the stories and the GTA Radio listening to the crazy radio talk and radio talkshows. in Vice City i did put in MP3 files in a radio folder that did become a separate radio channel. The GTA Online stuff i dont care about, not at all. i just want to play the storyline but i never rush the story line, i always wander off on my own quests and do side quests. the story is always so good i dont want to spoil the story by rushing it through. and the last GTA-V was really cool then you could play more than one character!

So incredibly inspiring. Both the Houser brothers and Benzies and everyone else who was at the core of Rockstar during those years. I wonder if the opportunity to create similar magic is still there at this moment in time, because Idk about how many others, but I'm sure as fuck inspired to take on similar creative endeavours, so a video like this is highly appreciated.

For people that've been following R* carefully like myself - the company has a lot to prove with GTA 6. IV was my favorite GTA after San Andreas (GTA 2 was my first PS1 game in 1999) and really every title they've been a part of has a special place in my heart. 6 will be the first big title without Dan, Lazlow, Leslie Benzies, and a few other big names in the company. Even RDR2 still involved all those creatives and it was also pretty much done with development when the stories about R* workplace culture helped spur the gaming industry to try and balance the crunch culture. So they're missing key people including script writers, the radio creative director, a lead programmer, etc. They have to appease both militant political ideologies and sensibilities, come up with an online game loop that at least somewhat bucks the standard fare of GTA 5s online to keep long-term interest, write the 1st compelling female lead in the largest franchise in gaming history... This is a huge task and it's understandable why it has taken so much time. The game will not live up to everyone's hype, but will it be successful enough creatively to keep people's faith in the series?
