Note: For those who’ve seen the individual videos already, here’s what’s new: Brand new introduction for the series, re-edited in quite a few places to improve quality (especially the first few videos when ya boi didn’t know how to keep a consistent aspect ratio) and to make it work as one continuous video, use of higher quality clips as well as additional joke edits, and the all-new ending credits sequence. See if you can spot all the changes! This should go without saying but a few things in here are now dated (GT Sophy, engine swaps, etc) but I still think it’s important to remember that at a certain point in time this was the exact situation for players in GT7 and overall my points are still relevant. I don’t know why I’m even mentioning this because I’ll still get comments about it anyway. Bruh.
Well, it's your fault that I've got maybe 50 550pp cars so I can do the High Speed Ring Clubman Cup + with as many different cars as possible. It's quite fun & I'm totally hooked... screw the legend cars (I've got most of them anyway) 😅
i love buying the most expensive car ingame while playing on low-medium graphics. Gives me a feeling of accomplishment and makes me proud that i've spent that time to get the car instead of going to work to buy a better computer. Or a real car instead of a bicycle.
I wouldn't actually mind being poor in a racing game if the game was actually realistic. But unfortunately these games are never realistic despite being "racing simulators".
I have no idea how they look at previous games and remove everything that was great and keep the trash and add the trash to the next game and say it’s the good old GT that everybody wants, at this point this is all about GT sport online with a few races tacked on, if all the tracks and cars have been made how hard would it really be to listen to us in the community and add a BUNCH of DIFFERENT championships for us to race with equal payouts so that the grind isn’t so damn boring doing the same 3 races over and over to gain 20million is the worst thing imaginable!! if my maths is correct it will take about 13hours of the same 30min race without breaks and finishing at the 30min mark earning the most per min of 825k to get 1 car that I can’t use in any event, what’s the point??? Seriously what is the point, it’s not like the cars add any value to my collectors club either as it caps at lv 50!!!! I have played all of the GT games including the spin off tourist trophy and unless it drastically changes via updates I won’t be returning to the franchise, the golden era of GT is sadly gone and dosent look like it’s coming back RIP GT
Speak for yourself? I got a version of every street gtr, a couple 180sx a few sileightys, a version of every z, two of the new z and love taking them to Mt panorama at the meeting spot and just blasting lap times with them
I hated this game. Even in vr. It’s utter shit. Dirt rally pisses all over gt7. I don’t know what makes me more annoyed, me hating the game or the fact that everyone else loves this game. Like how can anyone ever pick boring gt7 over the thrilling dirt rally? Sorry if I sound ignorant but gt7 is objectively BAD! Most of the game is licensing tests and silky chores.
That title could perfectly explain my feelings for forza. Its awful that two of the biggest competing franchises in this genre have both fallen to a similar state.
@@Mikauo_Xblade both. Horizon 1 was amazing but increasingly went further and further to the hypercasual market, compromising any depth. Personally, not a fan of where horizon decided to go, but it's where the audience was so I can't blame them, though there are still genuine problems that go beyond their target audience. Problem is that motorsport saw the success of horizon and tried to follow it. The hyper casual market isn't as interested in track racers. They sacrificed the depth of motorsport 4 and ignored their existing audience to appeal to one that didn't want them.
I don't think they've fallen to a similar state, their problems are different, and furthermore, the problems of Forza Motorsport - some of which they seem to be aware of, although it remains to be seen if they will be addressed - are not the same as the problems of Forza Horizon (personally, I didn't have any with FH4, which I thought was a big improvement on FH3, but I haven't touched FH5 yet).
The entire racing game genre is in the dark ages right now. There haven't been any groundbreaking racing games released in The last 5 years imo. Sim racing is the only thing with any passion behind it in the modern racing game landscape and I'm just not into sim racing as much as casual racing.
I think the way they ruined car collecting has gotta be my biggest complaint. It's like they concentrated way too much on car values and trying to replicate the real world car market, and completely forgot about why people enjoy collecting cars in games in the first place. We don't do it because we enjoy trying to collect a ton of virtual currency and spend it, we do it because we want to check out and drive a wide variety of cars. When lots of cars are basically locked behind unobtainable goals, it really ruins our ability to enjoy what the game could have to offer.
Ever since the algorithm showed me this channel, day after day i am amazed that you are not like, a 100k plus content creator. these are genuinely amazing videos
You ever considered the community is also the problem with constant complaints and never satisfied because they can't be patient, nothing good happens overnight or even in one year...... PD has listened by the way but it's impossible to please a community that doesn't even know what they want GT 7 to be,
@@truckercowboyed2638 What about bringing out a game that just works with the philosophy you told people you would? - Would be a first, I know, but still. Disappointing.
@@truckercowboyed2638 What universe do you live in where it’s acceptable for a $60, AAA game to take over a year’s worth of updates before it’s finally decent? And I’d argue a lot of people know exactly what they wanted GT7 to be, considering it was marketed as a return to the series’ roots. But to this day, it still doesn’t do a good job of that. The short and poorly designed single-player that doesn’t even hold a candle to GT3’s or GT4’s is one of the biggest examples.
The most baffling thing is that, they HAVE the tools to make this the best GT game ever! Adding a proper career mode is a start, and just imagine the endurance races with real time day/night cycle and weather changes.
Well...thx alot. You just cost me €100 because of this video. I'm 44 and i used to play gt1 to 4 every day for many many years when was about 20-25. Then marriage came and 2 children and i gave my ps2 away with all my games. I'm on some sort of nostalgia trip and came across this video and the longer i watched the more i realised that i miss those games. Maybe because i was a young man with a fun young life with such a possible amazing future ahead, but yeah... some of it was great, some of it wasn't. And now with some money in the bank i thought "why wouldn't i just buy a ps2 again and just imagine i'm 23 again?" So that is just what i did. Just a few minutes ago. I can't wait until it's delivered. You didn't really "cost" me anything. You gave me a window into the past and i get to relive a small bit of it. Thank you roflwaffle, great channel.
Eh, not to dunk on you, but nowadays we play GT4 on the PC thanks to PS2 emulators having becoming really good. I did own a PS and a PS2 and had all of the GT games since the first, but with emulators you can even play with modernised graphics and there are game modifications that add more content and fix certain issues, something you can't do on a PS2.
Especially the point towards the end about Kaz wanting to add suvs to the game rings true to me. I remember when in one update to GT Sport a Ford F150 Raptor was added and the damn thing would start appearing in races among proper sports cars and just keeping up with them. That completely broke my immersion.
Rally in Gran Turismo was always a joke ever since GT 3. I mean seriously, CIRCUIT tracks for rally races?? Even better: Those rally tracks even got PIT STOPS for some reason 😂 Don't even get me started on the lack of damage for those cars because the danger of getting your rally car damaged and beyond being able to repair it for the next stage is all that Rally is about... That just tells me that they don't even know what rally is to begin with or they just don't give a fuck about it either way.
the ford f150 atleast has a purpose, it could be used in the f150 raptor survival event and it was a decent dirt car there are only 2 SUVs i can imagine aking any sense in GT are the ford bronco and the jeep wrangler, maybe just maybe the AMG G-Wagon
Everyone at Polyphony & those at Sony involved with GT7 game development should be forced to sit & watch this & then explain WHAT HAPPENED! Hats off to you my friend for this & all your great videos
@@noahletwinski6955 When you think about it, these comments, especially yours, could be a great meme video for Rolfwaffle to create, you know, show some people sitting around a table then cut to Kaz, then Gordon Ramsey, etc etc
I can't imagine someone involved in the team or someone who knows the team hasn't seen the video with 600K views titled Gran Turismo. I haven't personally bought the game, but was a huge fan of GT3 and GT4. Given the restrictions I've seen here, I won't be buying it.
They won't give a shit even if they watch this video because unfortunately all they care about is money and people will buy these games no matter what.
The most infuriating thing is that a lot of these issues are prevalent for no literal reason. They don't even make sense in the context of realism OR being catered to multiplayer.
It's because he's Japanese and we know what happened to Japan in the street and unfortunately what makes them is arrogant. They don't care and I do things their own way. They don't listen to anyone because they don't trust anyone and when you don't trust other people you will do things your way, no matter how faulty it is. It is in their culture.
@@nevvanclarke9225 Because the other major Japanese auteur in the gaming industry on the same tier as Kaz.. is none other than Hideo Kojima. The only fact that seperates them in their current stage now is that at least Polyphony or Sony don't have any major drama with Kaz yet.
@@MikoyanGurevichMiG21This may be happening as soon as GT8 is released and fails commercially because it repeats the same mistakes of GT7. The only reason why the suits maintains good relationship with these producers is because they can make a product that is very lucrative for them. And while MGSV didn't flopped commercially, it was still not good and successful as the other main releases on the Metal Gear franchise(specially MGS 3).
@@pedinhuh16 I feel your pain, seems the "lucky" #7 games were not great for Forza Or GT. I'm Just glad our #8 is finally here and so worth the wait...
About the AI, If I remember correctly Kaz actually wanted to ditch single player for a long time. I believe Sony forces them to have something otherwise noone would buy it, and at best PD half-asses it, and at worst they actively sabotage it. The artificial pace slowing clock is a hint I believe. Like, you programmed it to be better than this, why would you deliberately rubberband it to go slower and extend the grid to make it at best underwhelming and at worst encouraging you to turn your Gr. 3 to a lawnmower.
PS: This would also explain the whole mess the career structure is now, it's not like PD couldn't design a better one, they either don't care or they are sabotaging it directly, and by stating in the marketing "GT IS BACK" probably they want to alienate newer customers to the concept and sweep a career mode under the rug. I know, it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I can't shake off this thought.
Yes he wants SP gone. That's work . He wants a " make your own fun " tech showcase that looks " like the real thing " when viewed over the shoulder by those who don't play games but have deep pockets and real supercars and super licenses.
@@marcusclarkson2657 I think Kaz suffers from what I call the Nomura syndrome, he has a lot of ambitions and great ideas but definitely needs someone to keep him in check and with feet on the ground
@@RobertoFornaro Reminder that Nomura wanted to turn Final Fantasy XV into a musical, years into development, after he went to see the Les Miserables movie. 🤣
This series has been incredible. Your critique on Gran Turismo 7 highlights my gripes on modern racing games as a whole; they always have one downside that ruins the game for me. It is honestly so depressing to see AAA developers in the racing genre to not even try to make a good racing game anymore. It's just "pHySiCs AnD gRaPhIcS" and that's it. This is insulting. Ever since I played Gran Turismo 4 when I was 8-years-old, it capture me into the world of cars and video games. Learning different car brands and their nationality, how cars work and how to drive them. It all return back to Gran Turismo 4. If it wasn't for GT4, I wouldn't be playing video games right now, but seeing the industry and their communities nowadays, I'm not even sure I would want to continue playing games. ==OFFTOPIC== I've always dreamt of making my own racing game; one that combines many features from many fan favourites into one package. I've been debating that if I can do this, but after seeing the state of the racing genre, I figure I might as well as do it now. Yours, Raycevick's, Kacey's and Ultra Violet's critiques on modern racing games motivates me to try out this project. I know it will be a daunting task, but I will try to make this dream a reality. Even if it takes me months, years or even a decade, I will finish my dream game. --Sorry if this comes off as cringy--
i too am a long time fan of gt4 and play it emulated when i get that itch. and I honestly belive that you can do it, it will take time and patince but i feel if you do like a gofundme or a kickstarter and advertise it you can make bank on your passion. because realisticly you have other things going on behind the scenes no one knows aside from you, but it would be a good thing to start on which engine you wanna use for the project then either get premade textures or make your own from scratch
@nynameisnyan20 Thank you so much for the reply. As for the game, my main issue is the physics model. I have been debating whenever to make one from scratch or use one that is premade. I'm not planning to make a simulator since we already have many of those; more like an arcade circuit racer similar to Race Driver: GRID. Besides the physics, most of the concepts are ready so I'm ready for development, except for the story (Yes, my game will have a story mode. A bit too ambitious, but doable).
You and the creator of the video should try to create a GT mode inside beamNG, most of the tracks and models are already there, you guys could invite other modders to help and make a GT 4/5 hybrid in there, call it GT-something. It would be really nice!
GT4 is my favorite. So much awesome content all throughout. The challenges, license tests, coffee breaks, endurance races, special events, manufacturer specific races, and the beginner and expert leagues. There’s unique parts with the tuner specific brands, including full models, so many cool cars, great physics, and full fledged tuning. It’s just the best!
Same, it has the best career mode for SP, events are just like it's predecessors and therefore fun and encouraging you to experiment with lots of cars, enough variety to keep you hooked in and top notch gameplay. It has a few downsides like not letting you use concept cars in most events was an L decision (though I wouldn't make the trade GT5 did where you could use those cars like any other, but had that awful leveling system). And now there are mods for it, and near perfect emulation options, so GT4 will likely have many more years of life injected thanks to the series' dedicated community.
nice to see the full compilation of all the videos together its one of the only good series that i've followed in a long time, looking forward to see whats coming next
GT7 feels like it was designed by someone with Alzheimers who kinda sorta remembers (or at least thinks he remembers) the originals, but actually remembers nothing. It surely doesn't help that Kaz looks the part too.
I dont have an internet connection, just mobile data, and when I finally scrounged together enough money to buy GT7and i popped it in so excited to finally play. I was so confused and pissed that I couldn’t play the game, only a music mini game that isn’t even worth 5 dollars. I dont know why its like this but you shouldn’t need to have an internet connection to play a single player game. That makes no sense and is extremely stupid.
The world of single player in GT7 looks like the world of some random royal prince that wants to race and all of its subjects hes racing with wants him to win at all cost.
Predetermined roulette tickets are very clever, because this way you can’t just reload a savefile till you get what you want Although what it is predetermined to pick should be more random than 2% for a car
Unbelievably great video about GT7 I have similar back story growing up liking cars due to GT3/4 and GT7 does feel so detached from what made Gran Turismo so special :(
How to fix Gran Turismo 7 (and how it should have been launched). Take what there already is, add a few more high credit races, give you more freedom with the opening car choice, and change the single player. The game should have had standard championships like those in the previous GT games, and add the menu books as an additional side objective that you can do if you want an easier time, or are just learning how GT works. The dealerships should change the old way, after each event, and the cars should have a standard price. They should not ever reach up to 20,000,000, it's ridiculous, and any cars that are incredibly expensive should have their own races.
And also fix car invitation rewards to make them easier to obtain by certain collector level and not rely on gacha roulette RNG, or just remove the car invite mechanics at all, it gets repetitive when you have to wait another day and grind 26.8 miles per hour every day and you still don't get an invitation. I keep getting the same brand invites on cars I've already obtained like Bugatti and Pagani. I wanted a Porsche and Ferrari but never got one. Especially we noticed after recent new car updates monthly the devs knew they never wanted to add another Invitation-only car because it was not well received by fans. Even the latest update finally gave us the option to purchase engine swaps and ultimate parts (though you need to reach a certain collector level) rather than relying on gacha roulette RNG's which is pretty stupid honestly
@@RokkumanZero23 I keep getting Citroen and Ferrari invitations, and I already have all of the Ferraris and the single Citroen you can buy. I just want the Porsche.
yes, this is the ultimate breakdown video of Gran Turismo 7. Many sincere thanks for this from me. Eternally grateful for the GT game series and for this channel.
The Clubman Cup are what the AI and races in solo should be... - They are the ONLY races that offer a real potential challenge. (I won them all first try except the Mini, and each one had me really working to nail my laps and passes)
Clubman Cup + is my favorite, I can't wait until all of the AI is replaced with all Sophy & that would be totally amazing... I figured out how to make her mad & she's a typical woman 👩 😂😂😂
without watching the video yet... I thought this game wasn't 100% it, but i played it and had about 17.5M credits, so i could buy the cars that would come with an update. My 15 year old son decided it would be a great idea to spend all those credits on clapped out AMG's, Golfs and other stupid cars. I ended up with 15.154 credits left. and now, it is so incredible hard to get some money back it is no fun at all... The game is about driving unachievable dream cars, which you just can't achieve in-game either.
I should get money for my dad lmao, it's so long and boring to get money just to run the same race over and over he doesn't buy any EXPENSIVE cars but I see why it takes forever!
@@mfbigboy5933 I grew up with GT1,2 and 3. By the time 4 came out I didn’t game as much but I played all of ‘em. There are just not enough fun events to do with them that are worthwhile.
I love the gran turismo series. You were right about some of the points in the video about wanting to be wrong about the future of GT - wanting to be proven wrong etc. The recent change in allowing Engine swaps and the ultimate tuning shop is a small grain of change that reduces the toxicity of the spins and makes the game better. It’s a heavy dose of copium but I do think PD just might have realised the colossal direction change required, at the very least they know they can’t do this again. Great Video so far! Love the long form content!
I still don't think they realize it. I think the hubris is strong, and they don't hold the players in any sort of high regard. They tricked us in the beginning and personally I don't like to be bamboozled like that and it ain't been made up for yet. Have owned every console GT and this one is a farce.
If they could fix the economy I'd be pretty happy with the game tbh but they make you grind for hours which kills the little bit of happenisnes you can have during driving but also where all the cars at?

I think all players/buyers of games should not buy a game until a trusted youtuber either does a review or streams live game play, and approves of the game as recommend purchase. I know that when GT8 or sport2 comes out. I will be watching with great anticipation your review on it before buying it.
3:12:30 "I think a game which functions as a virtual car museum, is probably what they're aiming for. So why not lean into that more?" That got me thinking. Instead of it being some random cafe the player is taking pretty pictures of cars for. (At the expense of their own wallet, no less.) What if the game framed the player as the co-owner of an automotive museum? (Alongside a character who helps to guide new players.) And you race for the sake of promoting the museum. And instead of the linear menu books that straight up give you the cars needed by just playing specific events tied to them. All to just take a picture of them... The museum would of course want cars to put up on display. And so like the menu books, you'd have a set of cars to get ahold of. Except you would have multiple of these sets available at any given time, and how you acquire the needed cars is up to you. Wether that is buying them from a dealer, winning them as a price car, or even going to an auction for rare cars. Some of these sets could also just have requirements that the cars have to fulfill, instead of specific cars. Such as "4 modern hot hatches" or "2 hyper cars". And as you complete these sets, the museum "levels up", and gives you access to new sets to complete for the museum. As well as extra rewards, such as money, a price car, etc. And completing a lot of sets that involve specific manufacturers, could also be how you unlock their invites. If one were to have that mechanic in the game still. One could even have a set with no restrictions, were a player can show off some of their cars to other players when they look at one's profile/museum. Then near the end of the campaign, there could even be a large championship that would be held by the museum. Like a final challenge! I think this would be a lot more fun and engaging for the players. Since they would have a ton more choice about how to go through the game's campaign. And without changing that whole "virtual car museum" idea that GT's director seemed so focused on for GT7. Because the game would straight up be about a car museum, and how that affects the reason for the player to go through the game's various races. This of course doesn't touch the ai, the fact a lot of cars are pointless within the game, the lack of event variety. But when it comes to the campaign's basis, this honestly sounds much more interesting and fun, than just grinding through menu books and watching cutscenes were character's I don't care about ramble on and on about history... Also I have never played any GT before. I used to be much more of a Forza player, but then FH4 happened... But I still hope these ideas of mine still sound interesting to the GT community.
I ONLY KNOW WHAT I'VE BEEN WORKING FOR ANOTHER YOU SO I COULD LOVE YOU MORE I REALLY THOUGHT THAT I COULD TAKE YOU THERE BUT MY EXPERIMENT'S NOT GETTING US ANYWHERE
I honestly don't feel like any new racing games can offer me anything I don't already have with my 30+yr library. After FM4 and GT5 it's just kind of been like... what else do we really need? And what can any new racing game really offer us that's not already been done and done very well? That's the problem. At a certain point, we've simulated everything about as well as we can, and only a huge paradigm shift in simulation or immersion will ever give be able to give us that utterly reliable experience of fun that we looked forward to experiencing every day. Remember that? Coming home from work or school and firing up the 360 or PS3 and just knowing you were about to do nothing but enjoy a damn good time? It's sad, but it's true. It's never gonna be the same again, boys. We're never getting those days back.
God yes... a 3hr video vindicating my thoughts on GT7 while I play GT6 Spec II :) You should try it, it's GT6 with seasonals, GT4 missions, and a ton of events from the older games added. So much I feel like its enough entertainment until PD pulls their finger out and starts listening
I've watched this video multiple times and I come back to it once again. I've beaten every race in the entire game, and after running hundreds of hours of AFK races with the Honda Beat on Daytona to grind for credits, I have reached 94% completion on the car roster. All I'm missing is a few used and legendary cars and two invite-only cars: the Veyron and the Huayra. Up until this week, I had obtained 2 Lamborghini invites, 2 Aston Martin invites, 2 Ferrari invites and 1 Citroen invite. I had also pulled 4 Venenos and 3 Chirons straight from the roulette. But despite having EACH of them appear 5 times in the roulette, I had not pulled a single Bugatti or Pagani invite. On Saturday, I pulled a Porsche invite. Despite not ever pulling another Porsche invite before, the Carrera was the car I got for beating menu book #39, so it was worthless to me. On Monday, I pulled my third Aston Martin invite. And a couple of minutes ago, I pulled my third Lamborgini invite. So, to sum up: *THREE* Lamborgini invites, *THREE* Aston Martin invites, *TWO* Ferrari invites. *FOUR* Veneno pulls from the roulette, *THREE* Chiron pulls from the roulette. *ZERO* Bugatti invites, *ZERO* Pagani invites. *ZERO* Veyron pulls from the roulette, *ZERO* Huyara pulls from the roulette. ................................................................................................................................................... I have been playing Gran Turismo for 20 years. Polyphony will never see another penny from me. I am done. Edit: Believe it or not, I got ANOTHER PORSCHE INVITE, 48 hours after making this comment. If it didn't have any resale value, I'd break the CD in half, but I'll trade it in for something that isn't complete ass. What a colossal waste of time.
I grew up on GT5 then moved to GT6 when I was collecting ps3 games years later then moved on to sport and my experience was amazing, GT7 feels like a mental flashbang to all of those memories and feels like logging on to work after I’ve gotten done with my actual job for the day
Oh my god, as someone who has played Gran Turismo their entire lives and played a ton of each of the games, this whole video perfectly encapsulates all of the issues (and more) that Gran Turismo today suffers from and exactly how I feel about it and how frustrated I am. You even thought of the same ideas I’ve had for solving the issues and more, this is an amazing video. I don’t understand what is going through Polyphony heads because it honestly just seems like they forgot how to make a game that’s fun and engaging since Sport, and as well as the issues like AI that have plagued the series for like 15 years now
when you discussed the feeling of your first gt car, I felt that. I just started playing gt2. picked a Toyota Celica. I just know that car is gonna be special to me forever
I don't know why, but most fun in multiplayer for me were shuffle races from GT5. God, I miss them so much, so many random cars to drive, total chaos in lobbies, so much fun, unlike the "real-life racing" that is Sports mode. I miss that kind of fun modes in racing games overall.
The invitation to buy a car "reward" is such bullshit. You get excited to see what car the purple envelope icon is for, then you get there and you just have to buy it anyway. It's completely stupid.
Microtransactions Son! If you don't see the connection between grind and the ability to skip it by buying credits with real money, then you have nothing to complain about the game's design.
@hellomadet while I agree with you that people will want to skip the grind, but more reasonable people will ask 'what's the point in the game if I just do that?' And that's where they really should have asked "why?"
You've gained a subscriber, this is an exceptionally well thought out and well made video. You've captured everything wrong with GT7 (and there's a lot) and also captured things I knew were bad but couldn't quite put my finger on or articulate. It's just a shame it will all fall on deaf ears and Polyphony will do absolutely nothing to look after its loyal fans.
They coulda done a few things that woulda been cool with some of the GT7 changes: - Add a special bonus questionaire to gain a credit bonus that race where the info is found in Cafe or something... but knowledge without application doesn't do much. - There is a TON of GT staple races that don't exist even after a year on the market in GT7. - Sport Mode I think should have to be unlocked, but it could have been unlocked differently with more thought. (Sportsmanship Test Races, open up Race A/B/C seperately with license. etc/etc) - The AI in solo mode is horrifying, as is the fact there is no Qual, no standing starts... - There is a TON of inconsistancies in the livery editor and custom parts, from defaulting your interior color based on paint change(new NSX in red), to 2 piece wheels that get fully painted as 1 unit, when in every other GT that wheel was clearly a polished lip even after altering color...buying the paints is a pain, because there is no filters, and finally wtf with carbon fiber.... serious. That's heinous that once you try to add carbon... no more special colors. You cannot make decal metallic. And there is no individual texture per decal... instead it decides that ALL your decals are that texture once changed. The windsheild banners are often not using the entire space and cut you off.
This is a fascinating and very well considered/executed critique of GT7 by a fellow Brit. It's a game I bounced off because the career mode café talking heads part you get dropped into is so baffling and to be honest, kinda boring. Bad game design and it pulls down the amazing visuals, sound design and gameplay. If I like a car and want to read up on it, I can do that when I'm not gaming. Having to click through lots of Wikipedia summation waffle rather than drive the thing, that happens far too often. It's a video game, not an automotive history documentary. GT6 is still my favourite, honorable mention for GT4 as well obviously. GT Sport I hated a few years after release, but now at end of life where all the single player stuff finally works offline like it should have from day one, it's actually pretty decent and almost up there with GT6. That's one of the problems though isn't it - it takes years of patching to get the last GT games anywhere near the old ones which were already well sussed career wise, off of the disc. It's part of the rot of always on Internet based modern game design thinking - release an unfinished product and patch it later. That being the case I'd rather wait until it's finished i.e. no more patches, even if it takes years.
I think I could blame microtransaction focusing on just about every complaint you and I have with GT7. Also this is a fantastic video. "Well said", as it were.
Right. The entire game is made to frustrate us into breaking down for MTs. Everything about it from upgrade costs, to car prices, to race lengths, to invitations, to roulette tickets and every nook and cranny in between. All to get you to " top up ".
That's exactly how I see it too. I'm surprised that @Roflwaffle16 dismisses that even after saying that it's a strong argument. My conspiracy theory is that they initially wanted to charge real money for roulette spins, but had to pivot due to regulatory push-back regarding gambling in video games. I don't have any proof, but it succinctly justifies all these anti-fun design decisions. Look at how they nerfed race payouts after the post-launch outcry. Did they do something similar with the roulette and invitation system? Idk how this can be so mismanaged. F*ck Kaz for being in charge of this franchise. It is a fantastic video.
Another use for Sophie could be to have a racing team where you meed to train up the teammates then they race using Sophie in large grids with you across tournaments.
Amazing work ! 🎯 Now doing a GT4 playtrough and GT7 is a vacuous shell of its former self (just like 6 and Sport). I think it's not only racing games, past 10 years everything in gaming is dumbed down, made fool proof with retardated HUD's and objective markers removing any sense of independent exploration and accomplishment, all aiming to appeal to the most common denominator thereby appealing to noone. And to draw that even broader, it's not only racing games or games in general, it's just also society as a whole, dumbed down, looking for a challenge is a vice nowadays.
The current state of their online lobbies is so woefully disappointing; I went from racing online in leagues, sport mode, and random lobbies with friends using a 300mbps plan via a wifi extender throughout GT Sport’s lifespan to experiencing the most jittery, unstable garbage while being wired directly to a third-party router connected to a modem that currently supports a 1GB plan. I’ve been playing this series online since GT5 and have never had a such longstanding instability issues like I do now; such a bummer. For some perspective, I’ve always lived in Los Angeles county so it’s not like I’m out in the middle of nowhere trying to finagle some 50 mbps connection from the local watering hole. I’m so, so disappointed by this.
You're a phenomenal content creator. This was a fantastic series. We can only hope this isn't the end of GT as we used to know it. Until then I'll keep playing what made the series so great.
The thing I hate the most is the removal of Quick Arcade. I really just want a game to race versus someone who’s at my house. Any car. Any road. Any time..
1:53:08 "Ambient music doesn't work well in a racing game." *cries in NFS Undercover garage soundtrack* (aka one of the few good things about that game)
Great video! I agree with pretty much everything you've said. The visuals in GT7 are absolutely stunning and PSVR2 is an amazing experience, but how the single player was so messed up is absolutely beyond me. I still play GT4 regularly, because it's just so much more enjoyable.
GT4, for me, just has this sense of progression and collection that I've never felt in other games. Sure I might be grinding for money, but I'm also making progress while I grind. I'm building a connection to the cars I'm using. I'm seeing that percentage complete number slowly going up with every race and I feel like while I'm in for a long ride, it's going to be a lot of fun. I feel accomplished with every single race and upgrade. It's almost like an RPG. Maybe that's why I enjoy the Import Tuner Challenge game (and it's predecessors) as much as I do. The single player is a story. Not in the traditional sense, but in that you're making your own story. You and your car are embarking on this epic journey together. Racing games now days have lost their soul.
For me, the series peaked at 3, and it was a bumpy road afterwards. Some highs, some lows. GT3 is my favorite racing game of all time, and for good reason.
I feel the big thing that would fix a lot of problems would to bring back the manufacturer events. It felt cool to discover a certain brand and it's model and get THAT old, rare and unpurchasable car. It gives value to these random cars you win
1:00:07 - I DID play Forza Horizon 1 and it was structured in terms of the races (C-class vehicles from the US, for instance). I don’t think FH was meant to be a structured racing game like Project Cars or Forza Motorsport. It’s meant to be more relaxed and open and the racing is meant to be a part of the experience, not the whole thing.
I hope Assetto Corsa make a GT rival. They probably had the budget, as the original is one of the most popular games on steam, and they seem to know what the community wants (we'll see if AC2 can be easily moddable, by the way their talking it seems so) and the base they have currently is very good. All they would essentialy have to do is look at Gran Turismo 4 and tweak it around so it is more up to date and unique. Plus, the game would be availble on PC, XBox and Playstation, so eveyone would be able to play it.
I'm afraid it's not as simple as that. I have huge nostalgia for Gt4, but as a game I think it's severely flawed. Were kunos able and willing to make a gt competitor, they should take inspiration from a lot of other places as well, specifically codemasters. Like in grid autosport, if you weren't able to win every time, the game would start expecting you to just do well in the midfield, which is a much more interesting place to be than the front of the pack. 1nsane(I know, made by invictus, published by codies) had so many wacky game modes and maps that would be impossible to do in real life but still were tons of fun as a kid. F1 2021 gave you goals during practice sessions that would (in theory) better prepare you for the race and give you development bonuses for the team. And the seemingly hardest part, having decent AI is already close to completion, because AI in ACC, while hardly perfect, is still some of the better I've seen in a sim
@@bartekkko Yeah I agree. I said just straight up copy GT4 because it would be miles better than any of the offerings we have had in the last 5 years. To take inspiration from more old racing games, what about the snow from project cars 2? Whilst maybe not the most realistic, it was a fun and unique feature, as you could take an LMP1 car for a spin (figuratively and literally) in the snow. The whole team building idea from GRID and F1 2021 is also pretty intriguing. I never played GRID, but I did play a bit of F1 2021. I thought it was a pretty well implemented feature, and with the abilities to branch out to other categories of racing, it would be a good game mode. Whilst B-Spec mode imo is pretty boring, since it's more of a managment mode (although it was pretty fun as a kid because me and a friend just set the drivers out to be as aggresive as a polar bear on LSD), combined with the team mode, it allows you to train the drivers up to become the best. If I remember correctly Forza Motorsport 1 had a similar feature, but you actually trained the AI by driving yourself. Kind of like a Chat GPT driver, where it regurgetates information from your driving. The special events from Gran Turismo 5 were also pretty fun. One time you got NASCAR training from Jeff Gordon (ok AC doesn't have the budget to do that), I remember a race on Tuscan roads in a yellow Murcielago and it was so dark you had to turn the blue racing line on to just see where the track went.
I absolutely love listening to these videos while working on my car. You should look into starting a podcast if you dont have one already. You have a great voice, incredible pacing and pronunciation, as well as just having interesting topics and good points to listen to. As well as including jokes makes this video so enjoyable.
7 was terrible. Lots of menus interrupting the game, driving is too slow and heavy, circuits are all green, no urban or distinctive, cars are too expensive, game modes are inexistent, the game is not even fun. Nice graphics ok but zombie driving is not for me
In my opinion Forza Motorsport 4 had the perfect balance of fun and prestige. The cars were celebrated beautifully but still came across as epic, rather than pretentious. Same goes for the music. The campaign, while not quite as deep as previous entries, was well paced and offered engine AND drivetrain swaps. Nothing was locked behind a weird wall and cars and money was constantly thrown at you.
@@sdsdecoyGran Turismo 6 in my opinion is the last good GRAN TURISMO. The overall game depth is still there and also brought back all 34 Missions from GT4 in GT6 SPEC II MOD.
Like your video mate, havnt cared for gt in many years but the passion with which you speak about it is endearing. Good to see more young people making videos on games who seem to understand the basic design choices that make a good game. Listened in the background while I blasted around on free roam in AC
I found it so frustrating to be handed cars hand over fist, and never being able to drive any one car for very long, because after two races it wouldn't be viable for the next set of races. I got absolutely no sense of progression from this game. You said it best when you likened it to an extended tutorial. That's all it was, and then when it was all over, it didn't seem like there was anything left to do. I love Sport mode, but I want a compelling single player too.
One manly tear to me eye. I started on gt4, and peaked on GT with GT5, and after that I got a pc, full wim, and now have multiple real cars. Shame what the game has turned into, but thanks for the memories.
Lack of career Poor A.I Need more tracks (Silverstone, long beach, Singapore etc) No bonnet view Mediocre and small car packs Boring racing Grinding for money Fixed roulette prizes Also needs real dust, dirt, rain effects that appear on the car, track and windscreen.
I own all the main games from when they were available in their respective day. I don't remember the game being available (in the uk) in 1997.. my memory says May 1998. My time playing gt7 is about as long as i can take watching this video, 10 to 15 mins (it's sunny outside rn) lol. However, unlike gt7, i will be back soon, popping in and out, as and when i have time. I really appreciate your reviews greatly but 3 and a half hours, man alive 😂 ✌
I think my favourite thing about the GT Critique series is how Waffle starts off optimistic about how the game can change and then just slowly becomes more and more cynical as it goes on.
So much of this video perfectly explains what I appreciate and dislike immensely with GT7. Thank you for all your hard work putting this all together. 🏆
yourr commentary about the sacrifice for teh sake of diminishing returns of photorealism are spot on as to why thanks to the cartoon shader in assetto cora's content manager i modded my assetto corsa to look like a hybrid between Automodelista and GT Legends , just slap on the a rightly graded pp filter and it looks gorgeous!
Note:
For those who’ve seen the individual videos already, here’s what’s new: Brand new introduction for the series, re-edited in quite a few places to improve quality (especially the first few videos when ya boi didn’t know how to keep a consistent aspect ratio) and to make it work as one continuous video, use of higher quality clips as well as additional joke edits, and the all-new ending credits sequence.
Bruh.
Thank you for putting the effort in, not just on this series, but on improving your craft. If only Polyphony would do the same.
Bro created an entire saga
Respect
Well, it's your fault that I've got maybe 50 550pp cars so I can do the High Speed Ring Clubman Cup + with as many different cars as possible. It's quite fun & I'm totally hooked... screw the legend cars (I've got most of them anyway) 😅
An idea for either an upcoming video or 2 videos would be
1. The penalty system
2. BOP.. or should I say, Polyphony's fantasy spin on it...
LOL 😂
GT Sophy hasn't solved anything. It's just particular races each week that have it. The actual game AI is still equally trash.
I love realistic economies in games so i can experience being poor not only in real life but in my empty game too
i love buying the most expensive car ingame while playing on low-medium graphics. Gives me a feeling of accomplishment and makes me proud that i've spent that time to get the car instead of going to work to buy a better computer. Or a real car instead of a bicycle.
hahahahhaha
I wouldn't actually mind being poor in a racing game if the game was actually realistic. But unfortunately these games are never realistic despite being "racing simulators".
There is no better feeling, I can already taste burnt oil
if it was realistic in any way then it would actually be challenging and provide an entertaining sense of accomplishment
It's so incredibly confusing how they're able to make *everything* you do feel completely pointless
LOL they really did.

Its awful that two of the biggest competing franchises in this genre have both fallen to a similar state.
when you say forza do you mean motorsport? ive never played any forza and to me the horizon games look fun. Whats your opinion?
@@Mikauo_Xblade looks don't tell you the story. Previous forza games had a lot of features that are missing from modern installments.
Having to spend over 1 mill per collected level really makes me sad. Like bro, why do I have to be lvl 50 to do an engine swap?!

The short and poorly designed single-player that doesn’t even hold a candle to GT3’s or GT4’s is one of the biggest examples.
All this game needed was a proper fun career mode.
YES!!!! That’s all so many of us ask for. Give me a good story paired with missions.
The most baffling thing is that, they HAVE the tools to make this the best GT game ever! Adding a proper career mode is a start, and just imagine the endurance races with real time day/night cycle and weather changes.
they have 1 race in the whole game that does that, the 1 hr on spa, they 100% didnt care about single player.

Yep. Here after SIFAS closed down.
And now with some money in the bank i thought "why wouldn't i just buy a ps2 again and just imagine i'm 23 again?"
So that is just what i did.
Pickup trucks, MINIVANS!!???? SUVs... I can also do without drifting events and if they aren't going to flesh out rallying they need to drop it.
Rally in Gran Turismo was always a joke ever since GT 3.
I mean seriously, CIRCUIT tracks for rally races??
Even better: Those rally tracks even got PIT STOPS for some reason 😂
Don't even get me started on the lack of damage for those cars because the danger of getting your rally car damaged and beyond being able to repair it for the next stage is all that Rally is about...
That just tells me that they don't even know what rally is to begin with or they just don't give a fuck about it either way.
the ford f150 atleast has a purpose, it could be used in the f150 raptor survival event and it was a decent dirt car
there are only 2 SUVs i can imagine aking any sense in GT are the ford bronco and the jeep wrangler, maybe just maybe the AMG G-Wagon

==OFFTOPIC==
I've always dreamt of making my own racing game; one that combines many features from many fan favourites into one package.
@@nynameisnyan20GT1 to 4 are still legendary in 2023.

GT7 feels like it was designed by someone with Alzheimers who kinda sorta remembers (or at least thinks he remembers) the originals, but actually remembers nothing. It surely doesn't help that Kaz looks the part too.
It’s May 2024 and nothing really changed. This video will probably (and sadly) remain correct for the lifecycle of GT7.
Damn, I should have watched this before I bought my PS5 and GT7. I could have saved ~600€.

I was so confused and pissed that I couldn’t play the game, only a music mini game that isn’t even worth 5 dollars. I dont know why its like this but you shouldn’t need to have an internet connection to play a single player game. That makes no sense and is extremely stupid.
You can't use a hotspot ?
The world of single player in GT7 looks like the world of some random royal prince that wants to race and all of its subjects hes racing with wants him to win at all cost.
Predetermined roulette tickets are very clever, because this way you can’t just reload a savefile till you get what you want
Although what it is predetermined to pick should be more random than 2% for a car
Unbelievably great video about GT7 I have similar back story growing up liking cars due to GT3/4 and GT7 does feel so detached from what made Gran Turismo so special :(
GT7 and Forza Motorsport 8 seemingly worked together on creating missteps. And this is the result.

Non of them where as boring as GT7 (even sport got some sort of proper career mode)
I have most of the cars that are relevant to me. 90’s and early 2000’s BMW’s and JDM icons, classic Le Mans racers and was steadily saving up for the mclaren F1.
Welcome to modern gaming
If they could fix the economy I'd be pretty happy with the game tbh but they make you grind for hours which kills the little bit of happenisnes you can have during driving but also where all the cars at?

3:12:30 "I think a game which functions as a virtual car museum, is probably what they're aiming for. So why not lean into that more?"
That got me thinking. Instead of it being some random cafe the player is taking pretty pictures of cars for. (At the expense of their own wallet, no less.)
What if the game framed the player as the co-owner of an automotive museum?

So, to sum up:
*THREE* Lamborgini invites, *THREE* Aston Martin invites, *TWO* Ferrari invites.

It looks like Kaz doesn't care about providing a compelling single player experience anymore. It's all about online and spectacle now.
I don’t understand what is going through Polyphony heads because it honestly just seems like they forgot how to make a game that’s fun and engaging since Sport, and as well as the issues like AI that have plagued the series for like 15 years now
The fact that a Video like this was necessary says it all :( great Work man, Hope GT finds back someday, to its better form
when you discussed the feeling of your first gt car, I felt that. I just started playing gt2. picked a Toyota Celica. I just know that car is gonna be special to me forever
i watched this 4 or 5 times now and my last playstation was the ps2 with gt4. Great video. great entertainment to have in the background for anything
Not even an hour into this it's utterly hilarious how GT7 is built
I don't know why, but most fun in multiplayer for me were shuffle races from GT5. God, I miss them so much, so many random cars to drive, total chaos in lobbies, so much fun, unlike the "real-life racing" that is Sports mode. I miss that kind of fun modes in racing games overall.
I did shuffle races every day. The cars were really balanced.
The invitation to buy a car "reward" is such bullshit. You get excited to see what car the purple envelope icon is for, then you get there and you just have to buy it anyway. It's completely stupid.
Suddenly i think that no one at Polyphony asked themselves during development of the game a simple question...: "Why?"
Microtransactions Son! If you don't see the connection between grind and the ability to skip it by buying credits with real money, then you have nothing to complain about the game's design.
i dont think they are allowed
@hellomadet while I agree with you that people will want to skip the grind, but more reasonable people will ask 'what's the point in the game if I just do that?' And that's where they really should have asked "why?"
You've gained a subscriber, this is an exceptionally well thought out and well made video. You've captured everything wrong with GT7 (and there's a lot) and also captured things I knew were bad but couldn't quite put my finger on or articulate. It's just a shame it will all fall on deaf ears and Polyphony will do absolutely nothing to look after its loyal fans.
They coulda done a few things that woulda been cool with some of the GT7 changes:
- Add a special bonus questionaire to gain a credit bonus that race where the info is found in Cafe or something... but knowledge without application doesn't do much.
- There is a TON of GT staple races that don't exist even after a year on the market in GT7.
- Sport Mode I think should have to be unlocked, but it could have been unlocked differently with more thought. (Sportsmanship Test Races, open up Race A/B/C seperately with license. etc/etc)
- The AI in solo mode is horrifying, as is the fact there is no Qual, no standing starts...
Great breakdown of GT 7 perfectly summed up my frustrations with it! It's sad seeing how many great single player centric games become so hollow.
ngl roflwaffle, think you just saved my life because if it wasnt for this... i would have never known what to make my homework about
great video, youre also just fun and very calming to listen to, thank you
Quite possibly the best videos I've ever seen about Gran Turismo. It's getting very hard to stay optimistic about the future of this series!
Just when we thought it's over, he came back again ❤
You're a phenomenal content creator. This was a fantastic series. We can only hope this isn't the end of GT as we used to know it. Until then I'll keep playing what made the series so great.
The thing I hate the most is the removal of Quick Arcade. I really just want a game to race versus someone who’s at my house. Any car. Any road. Any time..

"Ambient music doesn't work well in a racing game."
*cries in NFS Undercover garage soundtrack* (aka one of the few good things about that game)
and don't forget Static by Mick Gordon (Need for Speed World)
Great video! I agree with pretty much everything you've said. The visuals in GT7 are absolutely stunning and PSVR2 is an amazing experience, but how the single player was so messed up is absolutely beyond me. I still play GT4 regularly, because it's just so much more enjoyable.
GT2 and GT4 both share the GOAT title
Seen every video. Just watching the entire thing again for the watchtime so this guy can finally hit the algorhythm bingo
3 and a half hours absolutely OBLITERATING Polyphony

True but I like the new physics
I found it so frustrating to be handed cars hand over fist, and never being able to drive any one car for very long, because after two races it wouldn't be viable for the next set of races. I got absolutely no sense of progression from this game. You said it best when you likened it to an extended tutorial. That's all it was, and then when it was all over, it didn't seem like there was anything left to do. I love Sport mode, but I want a compelling single player too.
