"HEAT" is an absolute CLASSIC. It's perhaps one of the best crime/action dramas in cinema history. The fact that it was 3 hours long allowed the storyline to breathe and to fully develop the characters. The street shoot-out scene alone was one of the most intense scenes ever shot to date. There was a similar scene in the 1998 film, "Ronin" which also starred Robert DeNiro. That one is worth a watch too. It recently got a new 4K remaster so it looks pretty good now.

The reason the shootout scene looks so realistic is because they had a former SAS member training the actors in shooting, moving and reloading drills. They preformed so well on scene that military and law enforcement agencies have used the scenes from this movie to help training recruits in shooting tactics.

I always appreciate accuracy with shootouts/firearms in movies. Also the characters "methods" in this movie for the shootout scene were later emulated in real life with the North Hollywood Bank Robbery. The real life video footage from that shows just how realistic the movie was.

Really cool that you're watching this. By coincidence, I actually got to go to a screening of Heat a few days ago, where Michael Mann was doing a Q&A. I don't want to be overly long, but a couple of things he said that stood out to me:
    - Mann said he definitely wrote the screenplay so the audience gets an emotional connection, and when you are with each character you want them to win and you are 100% invested in both -- so you do find yourself rooting for the "bad guys."
    - Mann wrote whole biographies of the characters, down to being able to tell us (off the top of his head) where Vincent Hanna was born and went to school, and how Neil McCauley's upbringing led him not to care about himself, which made him useful as a criminal. Mann and de Niro knew the whole life path of de Niro's character that led him to the present time of the film.
    - The diner scene was unrehearsed! He just knew he had two powerhouse actors and that the two of them would be in the moment. The camera setup was very simple. Really smart that he knew to let the actors work and not take attention away from the dialogue.

28:24, You are right not everyone could make that shot. Earlier in the movie when John Voight's character Nate was telling McCauley about Hanna's life, he told him two interesting things about him beyond him being a cop with a law degree. Hanna is a former Marine and a graduate of their Sniper School.
Also if you notice, Hanna's rifle is built with a shorter barrel for maneuvering in tight places or exiting cars quickly. Hanna has obviously kept up his sniper school drills.

    • @paulhewes7333
      @paulhewes7333 6 месяцев назад +7

this is an often overlooked aspect of Vincent Hanna's character. Hanna was a professional gunfighter, who had access to firing ranges and trainers and all of it was 100% legal. Neil was a good gun fighter, but he was on the outside of the law, and he was a thief first. A straight up fight between the two was always going to go to Vincent. Always.

The director hired 2 former SAS operators as advisers to train the actors in weapons, tactics, etc. Mick Gould and ‘Andy McNab’.
‘Andy McNab’ is actually a kinda famous guy from a failed mission in the 91 Gulf War. There’s been a couple books & movies about it. “Bravo Two Zero” is McNab’s story. The incident was kinda like a “Lone Survivor” moment for the UK.

Thank you for picking this classic. Its so good. It has probably one of if not the greatest shoot-out in film history, the bank heist. They used real guns with blanks, thats why the shooting "feels" so real. Plus they had microphones everywhere to try and pick up as many of the sound as possible, absolutely unreal chase to try and get it as authentic as possible.
What I also like is how the movie isn't rushing the plot. It takes its time with the characters and the story, gives it time to breathe. The bit where they sit and chat is so great, two iconic legendary actors just talking. So awesome.
Also I love how you pick up on the feeling of the movie, great reaction.

This is a great movie, so true to form. It is so realistic, what a life of a criminal of this kind is like and the life of the detective that hunts them, absolutely brilliant. The reason you wanted them to get away with things even though they are criminals is because you got captivated by their characters, the personality, the suffering of their romantic lives, these are real human beings and so you get caught up in it. I felt the same. I really hoped that the guy played by Val Kilmer got back with his wife and child at some stage, he is the only one who survived.

The shootout sequence following the bank robbery inspired a real life event in which two men armed themselves to the teeth and robbed a bank in Los Angeles. The police were so overmatched that they went into a civilian gun shop and took everything they needed. One robber was shot, and the other killed himself. Amazingly, no police officers were injured.
The scene in the diner with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro was the very first time the two actors shared a scene together. They've starred together in movies in the past, including The Godfather, but they never acted off one another. They would later film another movie, Righteous Kill, in which they shared a scene for the second time.

@1:30 LAFD = Los Angeles Fire Department.
@7:30 I think he also had some kind of contractor's license that allowed him to purchase the explosives as well. If it was actually that easy to get explosives in 1995, I guarantee it has changed dramatically since 9/11 in the US.
@9:30 Pretty sure that guy is running pitbull fighting, horrible... and that is not a dog shelter.
One of my favorite films of all time. That coffee conversation and the finish are both just epic when you combine them. Thanks for a great reaction!

6:45 you can get permits to make and buy pretty much any explosive but it’s hard and expensive af but the only type of explosive you can just buy with only a drivers license is sold as a exploding target designed to be shot with a gun and you can only do that because it’s technically not an explosive until you mix the 2 ingredients that come in the package together but it’s literally just adding aluminum powder to A-N fertilizer (the A-N can be other things but basically same concept) both of which are easily attainable without a drivers license but that explosive can’t be used to make a shaped charge because the detonation velocity is very low compared to the very high detonation velocity of the explosives that are typically used for that stuff and which I won’t name but many of them or at least variants/alternatives to them are fairly easy to make so in reality that whole line from the movie should’ve been replaced with “it’s P*T* a homemade explosive, these guys know what they’re doing, let’s check sales records for high concentration _____ acid and _____ plasticizer” or something like that

@27:30 That is my only problem with this movie. The scene, the story, the characters are amazing. What is beyond belief of what I can expect is an all out fire-fight in public, sacrificing innocents and police, over bags of money. I guess it is a story about egos on both sides but, as a cult classic, I fear the rogue police to take away from this their hero status of 'winning' at all costs. Let them get away for now, you have them; observe and follow, don't chase; pick them off one by one. It is how they end up doing it anyway for half of them.

This movie is pre-911. The explosives and airports are more tight surveillance and security. There's also more cooperation. Vincent Hanna could actually more eyes from other jurisdictions on Neil McCauley. Neil would've gotten more Heat if not even before with the Confidential Informant getting more money and considerate attention. It was strange the guy was a CI who needed to confronted for information. Even pre-911 it was a weird exchange.

The guy who shot the first guard was a stupid jerk and a liability, he turned a well-planned, clean heist into a capital crime! Worst of all, he would've flipped instantly to save himself from the needle.

11:07 sadly there’s people that do this in real life. They’ll blackmail an employee who’s on parole for a cut of their paycheck with the threat to lie to their parole officer cause a lot of times no one will believe the con being innocent of that. And if the con is a female the boss will add in she gives him special favors if you know what I mean. It sucks for the con who is just trying to go straight and stay outta jail
